From the President and Board Chair ✔Train and support the volunteers and staff who carry out the mission each day, and
Dear Friend, To paraphrase Lewis Carroll’s Cheshire Cat, “if you don’t know where you are going, any road will take you.” As a mission driven organization, the Animal Rescue League of Boston (ARL), like Alice, must have clarity about where it is going— and what we are trying to achieve for both animals and people. In the spring of 2016, after three years of analysis and discussion, ARL adopted a new strategic plan including an updated mission statement—to be an unwavering champion for animals—and, a vision for the future that aspires to: ✔Confront animal cruelty and neglect at its root cause, ✔Advocate for public policy and law to protect animals, ✔Bring veterinary and other services to local communities serving people and animals most in need, ✔Strive to keep animals out of shelters and in homes and habitats, ✔Provide high-quality animal care, ✔Pursue continuous improvement and measure impact,
2
✔Grow resources to reach more animals and people. Now, just two years since adoption of the strategic plan, we are excited to report the progress achieved to date. In the pages that follow you will read that in 2017 over 18,000 animals were served and new community-based programs were initiated including, the Community Cat Initiative and the Community Surgical Clinic. Additionally, nearly 3,000 animals were rescued from cruelty and neglect and over 300 animals, victims of overcrowded southern shelters or the ravages of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, were saved. On the opposite page you will find the names of our Board of Directors and Leadership Council. These individuals contribute their time, talents, and treasure to support ARL. We must give special thanks to our four retiring Board members: Lee, Barbara, Chuck, and Holly. Together they have contributed an amazing 58 years of service to ARL! Moving forward we welcome three new board members, Neal, Alisa, and Tim who bring exceptional talent to this mission. Our Annual Report also recognizes the many people, like you, who contribute to our progress; President’s Council members, the Champions Circle, corporate
and foundation partners and, the Anna Harris Smith Legacy Society, those who have included ARL in their estate plans. We are deeply grateful for all your support. ARL was founded 119 years ago by a social worker, Anna Harris Smith, who championed the humane treatment of animals. Moreover, she believed that by educating and bearing witness to the care of vulnerable animals, our collective humanity would be enhanced. Over a century later, we continue to be inspired by Anna’s spirit and insight as we travel forward with clarity and determination to achieve our mission and vision for the future.

Vision in Action In 2017, we helped 18,018 animals in need – together! Thanks to your support, ARL made huge strides in 2017 toward achieving our vision that animals are safe and healthy in the communities where they live. The following are just a few examples of what you made possible.
Confront
Meet
animal cruelty and neglect at its root causes
people and animals where they are — bringing veterinary and wellness services to those who need it most
✔ Investigated and rescued 2,966 animals involving: hoarding, farm animal neglect, kennel conditions, abandonment, domestic violence, and cruelty; 84 of these cases resulted in law enforcement prosecutions. ✔ Rescued 111 animals from 4 hoarding cases that required intensive veterinary care – all survived! ✔ Presented ARL’s “Unwavering Champion for Animals” award to Senator Mark Montigny and his staff for their work in the passage of “Too Hot for Spot” at Massachusetts Humane Lobby Day.
4
✔ Surpassed 50,000 spay/neuter surgeries on the Spay Waggin’ since its inception. ✔ Opened a Community Surgical Clinic on the Dedham campus operating every Tuesday and Thursday, and collaborated with the State Homeless Animal Fund to access subsidized vouchers. ✔ Launched Community Cat Initiative, in which we assessed 102 community cat colonies involving 622 cats; 78% of these cats were adopted, while 22% were returned to their colonies. ✔ Secured funding for a weekly low-cost Pet Wellness Clinic at the YMCA in Codman Square, Dorchester, as part of ARL’s Healthy Animals – Healthy Communities Initiative.

field-workers and the general public about animal care and protection
✔ Negotiated new partnerships to expand animal transports; 306 animals were transported to ARL from areas facing overpopulation, such as Puerto Rico, Florida, North Carolina, and Mississippi.
✔ Collaborated with The Cummings School
✔ Redesigned our adoption practices with , a conversationbased, application-free adoption process designed so that the needs of both the animal and the adopter are understood and compatible with one another.
✔ Supported 30 shelters across the country to evaluate 8,481 dogs using ARL’s online behavioral assessment tool Match-Up II.
✔ Recruited additional Rescue Services staff, including a full-time Community Dispatcher and two new Rescue Agents.
of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and Animal Folks to draft a manual for Massachusetts’ veterinarians about the protocols of identifying and reporting animal cruelty.
✔ Provided training for 150 Animal Control Officers on the new Tethering & Confinement Law regarding dogs left in vehicles during extreme hot or cold temperatures. ✔ Taught enrichment course at Codman Academy Charter Public School, allowing students to explore the link between the health of people and pets in the community.

Champions Circle The Champions Circle is a dedicated community of donors who support animals all year long with recurring monthly donations. Monthly giving is a convenient, affordable, and efficient way to provide help where it’s most needed.
Be a Champion All Year Long... $25 monthly can provide behavioral and enrichment training $50 monthly can provide food, shelter, and care $84
monthly can rescue an animal in distress, and earn you membership into ARL’s President’s Council
“I chose to support ARL on a monthly basis for three reasons; first, I wanted to be a dependable donor; second, I usually plan an amount per year that I would like to donate and monthly giving helps me reach my goal; third, and most importantly, is because I love animals and want to do as much as I can to help the ones in need”
