AQUATIC CENTER DEVELOPING A LANGUAGE In this exercise our professor tasked us to use a list of words that were given to create models that helped us in the design process. The first phase of this exercise was to work individually, creating different models using different sentences. It was time for the studio to partner up and create these forms with one another as a team. My partner and I decided what worked best between our individual models were the fluted parts of their form. We dawned the task to create models with the use to a subtractive process, this was new to me so we thought of different ways to create the model that would make the most sense and how we can apply this form into our future aquatic center design. CONEY ISLAND The project from here on out was to set the focus on the aquatic center that the teams of 2 were suppose to develop for the rest of the semester. The site of the project is set on Coney island, Brooklyn New York. After conducting a site visit the most prominent piece if information coming out of that trio was that the board walk was right against the site and it gave a lot of us the opportunity to use it to our advantage when thinking about design and circulation. By looking back at our pink foam models we looked at the strongest set of qualities and how they gave us the forms we intended to create. This outlook further advanced the discussion on how we should design the aquatic center, and what rules are going to be applied to our initial design and how to we iterate going forward. The program consists of two large pools, a competition pool and a training pool all with specific area of measurement. Other programs that had to be put into the project later on were the mechanical rooms, storage rooms, bathrooms, changing rooms, circulation areas, stands and offices. Going into the first step of design we had to think about how to make our pink foam models into massing models, that could fit two pools inside. We kept the language in our most successful models intact and brought it over into the first stages of the aquatic center.

SUBTRACTIVE PROCESS During the process of subtraction, we started to discover some gaps and openings that derived from this process made us understand our process more, and what we needed to carry forward into the aquatic center design. The concept of rib and remnant came from this process, we decided to make it a system with two rules of rib and remnant. The rib is what is what is left over from the subtractive process and the remnant is what the ribs are connected to, holding the whole model together.
6
ADDITIVE PROCESS After long discussions about our subtractive process, our goal as architects is to ultimately design a building that is going to be built with the additive process. This made us think how can we recreate the subtractive model to incorporate two pools with the additive process? It came to the conclusion that the ribs had to be cut out and manually put together with a construction based mind set. Where the important rooms and hallways will go, as well as the entrance.

KATSURA IMPERIAL VILLA HISTORY
KATSURA IMPERIAL VILLA Katsurachō, Kyoto, Japan 1615 -1663 A.D
In this studio we are introduced into analysis with in the structures and architecture of the past. I was assigned the Katusra Imperial Villa. The first part of the project was to work in groups and find the drawings for the Villa in books, and other media. Then we split after the group work and find a particular part of the villa that we find interesting and further Analyze those components architecturally.
BOUNDERIES IN NATURE “The wood-carver can fashion whatever he will. Yet his products are but toys of the moment, to be glanced at in jest, not fashioned according to any precept or law. When times change, the carver too will change his style and make new trifles to hit the fancy of the passing day. But there is another kind of artist, who sets more soberly about his work, striving to give real beauty to the things which men actually useand to give to them the shape which tradition has ordained. This maker of real things must not for a moment be confused with the maker of idle toys.” Murasaki Shikibu, The Tale of Genji

Housing projects are always a difficult task for architects and developers. But, throughout the years homelessness has gone up throughout the 5 boroughs to an all time high. As architects we can help design for a specific group of people in need and in school a project of this caliber is always helpful to set us students towards the right direction on terms of housing and afford-ability. In this studio our professor assigned two sites, we split the class in half. Half in Bed-sty in Brooklyn and the other half set in east Harlem. The projects were individual and each student followed all the FAR rules and regulations set in their site. The professor made the studio feel real with process and practicality.

Another important note is that each student chose a homeless user a specific type of homeless group. For example, drug abusers, homeless mothers, homeless immigrants etc. The user that I went with was homeless veterans. It started with research and based on the data I based by design on what I felt was best for homeless veterans. Including a program that is integrated into the housing structure. LIVING ROOM
