EQUEST’S MISSION TO PROVIDE THERAPY THROUGH EQUINE-ASSISTED SERVICES

In the heart of Texas, where horses have long been synonymous with the state’s identity, a groundbreaking industry is emerging. Equine-Assisted Services (EAS) are transforming lives, providing equine-facilitated activities, therapies, and counseling to children and adults with physical, cognitive, sensory, coping, and learning disabilities.

At the forefront of this booming sector is Equest. Founded in 1981, the 501(c)(3) North Texas-based nonprofit Equest stands as a pioneer in EAS, earning the distinction of being Texas’ first accredited center by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.) and one of the largest in the country today. Over the decades, Equest has solidified its reputation as a leader in the field, offering accredited instructor training courses and hosting PATH workshops. Its influence extends nationwide, providing guidance to individuals eager to learn how to establish similar therapeutic centers.

Among some of its innovative initiatives are the Hooves for Heroes program, which supports veterans in their journey toward healing, a literacy program designed for first graders in underserved communities, a youth crime prevention program in partnership with the Dallas Police Department, corporate team-building workshops, outreach efforts featuring miniature horses that bring joy to seniors in assisted living facilities, and more. With 34 therapy horses, a dedicated team of professionals, and 700 volunteers contributing 30,000 hours annually, Equest transforms lives for more than 2,000 individuals each year, setting the gold standard for equineassisted services nationwide.

Would you like to get involved with Equest? Here are some ways you can make an impact.

Volunteer

On January 18 and 25, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, Equest will be hosting Volunteer Training sessions. This training offers individuals the chance to engage in meaningful volunteer work, whether their passion lies in working with horses, engaging with children, or welcoming people into specialized care. Please note, volunteers aged 12 and 13 must be accompanied by a guardian. Interested individuals are required to complete the volunteer application to attend training: Equest.org/volunteer/.

Sponsor A Horse

For just $7,500, generous donors can sponsor one of Equest’s majestic horses for one year, providing essential care that covers everything from feed and veterinary care to farrier services and even chiropractic treatments. For those on a tighter budget, Equest offers a $600 supplement sponsorship (that’s only $50 per month) that ensures a therapy horse receives nutritional and dietary supplemental support necessary to stay healthy and happy year-round. In appreciation, sponsors will receive a personalized stall plate, a listing on the website, a certificate featuring their horse’s photo, and a shout-out on Equest’s social media. Horse sponsors at the $7,500 level will also enjoy a delightful photo session with their horse — because who wouldn’t want to show off their new four-legged friend?
