Who Are Ya?

After a shaky first few games we are starting to see the best of our new 31 year old Argentinian centre back, a reassuring presence at the back and capable of adding a little extra menace up front at set pieces. Blimey, he even managed a cheeky back heel to score against Cordoba in the cup. Born in Rafaela in 1985, he worked his way through the youth system to play for Atletico Rafaela in Argentinas’ Second Division and soon became a regular fixture. Lucas got his big break with a move to Racing Club de Avellaneda in Argentinas’ Primera Division. A year after joining them he hit his first goal for the team, but don’t hold your breath to see them on a regular basis for us. First team chances dried up and Lucas went out on loan to Belgrano, and later New Chicago, both in the Second Division. Leaving Argentina to play abroad for the first time last season was a bold move for the defender but he settled well at Mallorca and played 41 games for them in a season where they narrowly avoided relegation. Maybe if they’d kept him for another year, they would still be in LaLiga 123. Pep Marti must have had good reports from his old club, and he was one of the first reinforcements to join us in the summer. If you’re looking for signs and omens, our promotion season to the Primera in 2008-09 featured another Argentinian centre back, Ezequiel Luna, what a fine player he was.

Lucas Aveldaño

Name: Lucas Elio Aveldaño. DOB: 19 July 1985 (age 32). Place of Birth: Rafaela, Argentina. Shirt Number: 19. Position: Centre back. Previous Clubs: Mallorca, Belgrano, New Chicago.

Times have changed for the better at CD Tenerife. Obviously no one

foresee if we can win promotion come June, or even win today. But l can a r e n e we are heading in the right direction. The Club led by President G El Concepción have received their fair share of stick over the years (some deserved), but the mentality has improved regarding public and fan club relations and marketing etc. The decision to not charge season ticket holders for our upcoming big cup match against Espanyol is welcome. Some clubs in the UK seem to want to strangle every last penny out of fans, even the money clubs. But here they really do appreciate our support. ‘We are in debt to our loyal fans’ they say. Very tough game today against high flying Numancia, but if we can keep the tempo of the first few home games I am confident of a good result. A few years ago three of us travelled to Soria, but it was closed. It was a good little break however and that brings me to another subject, away trips. Several of us have already booked the 4th or 5th November for the game against Sevilla. Apart from that a few others are looking at the second leg 4th round Cup tie against Espanyol in late November. Flight prices are cheap at present but be careful as game day or time has yet to be confirmed. I will keep everyone informed or check for information on the Facebook ‘Armada Sur Awaydays’ page. Vamos Tete!

Bryan Acosta will miss two more games this year, as Honduras progressed to the World Cup play off stages after a surprise away victory against Mexico. They will be playing Australia between November 6th and 14th, meaning he will miss the games against Sevilla Atletico and Cultural Leonesa. The next home league game against Osasuna is now confirmed for the Sunday 29th October, kick off 19.30. Bus leaves Toby Jug at 17.00 and Los Cristianos within about 10-15 minutes. Suso returned to the squad after his hefty (but deserved) five match ban. But with Villar returning from injury, he was left on the bench during the Oviedo game. The decision was justified as Villars’ superb volley rescued a point against a determined Oviedo side. Tenerife B suffered their first defeat of the season last weekend, unfortunately to Las Palmas C by one goal to nil. They still hold third place in the division. The Pio ‘c’ team are doing well, but as their b team is at the bottom of the third, they may have to suffer forced relegation at the end of the season if the Pio ‘b’ return to the fourth tier (fingers crossed).

The draw on Wednesday took us into the top six, but results from the Thursday night games dropped us back into eighth position. This time last week we were in tenth place. Sporting, Rayo and Zaragoza have improved their position by winning both of their last two games and Osasuna have now hit some real form with 16 points in the last six games. Cadiz have hit some bad form recently with only a single win in six, and Cultural Leonesa are steadily dropping after a promising start. Teams on the up are Zaragoza and Rayo who weren’t figuring in the earlier stages. Reus have only lost one game but have drawn six, which we know to our cost last year, can be the difference between a play off spot and automatic promotion. Sevilla have still to register a win and must realise this season will be a long one for them. Albacete and Gimnastic have both had a couple of wins recently but still remain in the drop zone. Alcorcons’ great start is now demolished, with four losses in a row taking them to just above the bottom four with only nine points.

Forward investment reflects on league and cup results By game ten last season many were calling for Pep Martis’ head as we were firmly planted in the drop zone with only eleven points. Scoring only seven goals and conceding eleven. The outlook this season so far is more encouraging with fourteen points from nine. The signings of Malbasic, Longo and Villar has given us that extra edge up front, resulting in thirteen goals from nine games. Add to that our tally in the cup, makes it twenty in eleven games. If they can hit the target more regularly away from home, the extra investment will hopefully turn out to have been worth it.
