Who Are Ya?

Those distinctive yellow boots have brought Juan Carlos back for a second spell with us, and he has already won the MVP for August and September. Not particularly well remembered for his first spell with us in 2015, maybe because he was here for just six months, and played only nineteen games. Starting out with the youth team at home town club Deportivo La Coruña, he had four years with the B team, adding 28 goals in 115 games. There were the odd call ups to the seniors but he had to get his first senior goal while on a ten game loan to Huesca in 2013. Once back at Deportivo he showed his scoring touch with three senior goals and things were looking up. It all went a bit wrong though when he had a training bust up with Luisinho in April 2014. The absolute bounder slapped Juan Carlos in the face and not surprisingly, things were a bit strained after that. It simmered for nearly a year and then he broke his ties with Deportivo and joined us in the January transfer window of 2015. The next move was a bold one, off to Romania to play for CFR Cluj in their top league for a season and chipped in with 7 goals in 39 games. This summer a chance to come back to Santa Cruz suited both parties. Juan Carlos is still only 26 and is already showing his versatility. As well as creating chances for team mates, he is our top scorer when taking the Copa del Rey games into account. A good start to his two year deal here.

Juan Carlos

Name: Juan Carlos Real Ruiz. DOB: 15 March 1991 (age 26). Place of Birth: A Coruña, Spain. Shirt Number: 17. Position: Attacking midfielder. Previous Clubs: Deportivo La Coruña, Huesca, CFR Cluj.

This is a massive game today for Tenerife. I think most were pleased

the performance in the cup on Thursday and if we can keep that l with a r e n e momentum going we should give league leaders Osasuna a run for G El their money. Slowly but surely we are getting the main team back together after so many injuries, with Italian Samuele Longo crucially back in attack. We are spoilt for choice between the sticks with Dani and Carlos Abad, both top keepers. In fact wherever you look on the pitch we have strength in depth, but you feel the team have let us down on their travels recently. The very same players look very average, how can that be? I am not sure if a special charter flight for the team could be the answer. Journeys to away games can be complicated affairs involving sometimes two flights and a long coach trip. Ideas have surfaced before to fund a charter plane and fill the rest of the flight with fans but manager Pep Martí has been against this in the past. He says the players need to be focused and not be posing for photos all day, and I can see his point. Having said that if anyone ever goes to an away game you will not find a more down to earth bunch of players. At the team hotel they will come up to you and ask if you’re okay, have tickets sorted etc. Obviously you will need to be wearing a CDT top, not just a pair of budgie smugglers around the pool. Vamos Tete!

On the medical front, Villar is back in light training, but still under observation. There is no set time in which Camille and Montanes are due to return, as both injuries are severe. Longo and Jorge both took part in Thursdays’ cup tie. The B team added another victory after a one nil away win at Buzanada. However, they are just outside of the play off zone at the moment, even though their form has been pretty good. Won six, drawn four, lost one. There are still plenty of Armada Sur pink ‘Walk for life’ tee shirts available, priced at 10 euros each. See Chris on match days, or contact Bob and he can arrange for you to pick one up from his shop. There will be an announcement soon about the Xmas Raffle we are planning. Lots of prizes including team shirts, autographed memorabilia and other CDT related items. Unprecedented scenes on Thursday as the club struggled to get the floodlights working properly. Thankfully after a half hour delay, the game was up and running. A sense of overwhelming relief for El General, at the thought of giving out all those refunds.

Out of the four top places this week, three are occupied by last seasons’ relegated teams from the Primera, although only Granada registered a win. The top six clubs have only lost four games between them in the last five weeks. Our lack of wins (only one) in the same time, is what is keeping us out of the running. Numancia have found themselves just above us after last weeks’ loss at home to Granada. In fact our point against Granada is looking better considering their recent form. Sevilla B came very close to beating Zaragoza, but were pegged back for a draw which means they are still yet to win this season. We are their visitors next week, and unless they really surprise Barca B today, one would hope that we can help them continue this unenviable run of form. They are now losing touch with everybody. Fridays’ game between Zaragoza and Leonesa ended up as a goalless draw. The postponed game between Gimnastic and Barcelona B is still to be re-scheduled, so they both maintain a game in hand.

Youngsters impress in the Copa del Rey Pep Martí took the opportunity to give some of the younger players a run in the first leg of the cup tie against Espanyol. Eight of the starting eleven were aged 24 or under. Nahuel at left back gave a good account of himself, and he may be needed if anything happens to Iñaki during Camilles’ injury lay off. Brian Martín will be cursing himself after he missed the golden chance of the game. Carlos Abad made his third appearance of the season and kept another clean sheet. We would like to thank Zinadine Zidane for his nepotism at Real Madrid.
