Who Are Ya?
Luis Milla
Living in the shadow of a famous father can’t be easy, especially when he has the same name. Luis Senior was a big star with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, and is now coach of the Indonesia Under 23 team. Our new signing is a 23 year old attacking midfielder who hasn’t played above Segunda B level, so a 500,000 euro four year deal to bring him to Santa Cruz could be seen as a gamble. His big claim to fame is his 25 metre cracker of a goal away to Real Madrid in this seasons’ Copa del Rey, check it out on You Tube. Born in Madrid, Luis played at youth level for Rayo Majadahonda (give me an M...that could take all night) and went on to play for Rayo Vallecano B and CD Guijelo. At Guijelo, Luis only played 5 games due to a bad injury. For 2016-17, Luis signed a four year deal for Alcorcon, but they loaned him to Fuenlabrada where he was a key player in getting them into the play offs. At the start of the 2017-18 season Luis Milla rescinded his contract with Alcorcon and committed himself to Fuenlabrada. This season they have been flying high and he was a big hero with the fans. It’s possible Fuenlabrada could win promotion into our division, but the play offs are a long drawn out nightmare as CD Tenerife can vouch. Luis is not a prolific scorer with only 11 goals in his senior career, but hopefully he will add pace and creativity to our engine room.
Name: Luis Milla Manzanares. DOB: 7 October 1984 (age 23). Place of Birth: Madrid. Shirt Number: 22. Position: Attacking Midfield. Previous Clubs: Alcorcon, Fuenlabrada.
ral as we were about recent performances (especially last week) and will El Gene therefore put in a real shift or if we go a goal down, with the crowd on their I think today will go one of two ways. Either the players will be as annoyed
backs, we could lose heavily. Hopefully the first option will be the one to shine through. We certainly need to get back to winning ways as a couple more defeats and we will need to look over our shoulders at the dreaded unthinkable relegation zone. Coach Martis’ days seem numbered, but in the stadium at least there have not been chants for his head due to the respect he has earned. So who may take over if Marti leaves? As most know the CD Tenerife B team are enjoying a fine season, currently leading the Tercera division. Their boss Mazhino is from La Laguna, who managed with great success local teams before being signed by CDT last summer. Promote him now? Plenty of fans say yes, but I am not so sure at this crucial time. In my view if the worst comes to the worst and we do need a new manager we should go for an experienced man to steady the ship until the end of this season, and make sure we get to safety. In the meantime Mazinho could be preparing for the 2018-19 season, getting to know the squad and knowing which youth players to bring with him. Great numbers last week by Armada Sur, wow, 158 strong. More than the 1% of the crowd we usually claim to be. It takes me back to when I struggled to fill my car in the 90s when we were La Liga regulars. I even recall one game against Valencia when I had to drive up alone and ended up writing my car off in an accident and did not make the game.

The B team seem unstoppable at the moment, with an away victory at Tenisca last Sunday. Looking at the clubs’ web site, they really aren’t very good at promoting the other teams. No web page dedicated to the B team at all, and just one round up news item showing the results of all the games. Even a fixture list would be something. Surely they deserve a bit more coverage than this. The Cabildo de Tenerife has approved the project to replace the pitch at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium at a cost of 890,000 euros. The works include replacement of the turf, as well as the renewal of the irrigation network and the pre-installation for communications and ‘LED advertising’. Last week saw the introduction of youngster Borja Llareno, who came on as a late substitute in last weeks forgettable game. Whilst it’s good to see our young players coming through the ranks, some of the crowd saw it as a Martí hoisting up the white flag as he replaced Juan Carlos with ten minutes to go. Borja is the second junior player to make an appearance this season, although a few others have been included in the squad.
Round Up A week can seem like a long time when your last performance has been such a disappointment. Just five points between us and the dreaded 19th place, even though we are in twelfth place (after Zaragozas’ win Friday). With only seven points from the last six games, we cannot afford to let things slip anymore than this. With three teams on 37 points now, it is getting harder and harder to imagine a top six position by the end of the season, and it all started so well. Oviedo continue their current good form, and as Cadiz lost at the weekend, the gap from third to second has been closed to two points. However, Oviedo play Lugo this weekend, who could skip over them with a win. Huesca just keep pressing on. Another small club with a stadium that only seats 5,500 people looking like they will be punching above their weight alongside the likes of Eibar, Girona and Leganes, who managed to knock Real Madrid out of the Copa del Rey midweek. Another minnow overtaking us and other ‘bigger’ clubs. Makes you wonder doesn’t it?

Serrano feels that one winter signing is enough At the press conference introducing Luis Milla last week, Serrano stated that he felt we had a well balanced squad and had no desperate need to make any further signings in the January window. Although they may pick up on any opportunities that may arise at the end of the month. There has been a welcome change in the signing of players this season, as there are fewer players taken on loan than in previous years. This does make sense as we seem to spend every summer practically rebuilding the squad.
