Not fair, but Martí had to leave. Joseba Etxeberría named as new coach, ‘on loan!’ Three points between 11th and 19th. Let the dog fight commence. Winger Alex Mula joins on loan from Malaga.

Coach swap - How, when and why Pep's Up Side - Arrived having no coaching experience whatsoever, but inspired the squad to a record of 11 wins, 12 draws and 8 losses in the 2015-16 season. Went on to get us into the playoff final last season where we were within a goal of promotion. Pep's Down Side - Too loyal to some players, lack of left sided play, too defensive. Last seasons finale gave him a difficult act to follow, especially after losing key forwards. Clubs Down Side - Serrano summer signings had repetitive injuries and ludicrously long recovery times. Senior players didn't show the responsibility their years, and new improved contracts, demanded. Pep v The Players - The first media doubts about Pep were expressed in December but several leading players made a point of stating their backing in the press and on social media. The 1-3 Barcelona defeat told a different story, players simply didn’t play for him. With 22 players v one coach there is only ever one winner. Concepcion held firm in his support of Pep for two more games. Time To Go? - The 2-1 defeat at Granada meant one point from three games and a closed transfer window. Granada was a step back from the 0-0 Valladolid draw, players were hiding again and it didn’t look like getting better. Peps' fate was sealed.

Joseba Etxeberria - Conjure up a new coach in a week at this stage of the season? Unproven at this level but that bloke Rafa Benitez was unproven when he took over at CDT. Joseba, aged 40, has massive respect as a player with Athletic, and has coached at youth, Segunda b and as an assistant at senior level. You can’t help thinking that two years on, we are back where we started. But as before, you have to give the guy a chance. You just never know.

ral week. It is a shame that it came to this, but I am sure Pep Marti will go onto El Gene greater things in the future. New boss Joseba Etxeberria is a passionate As many expected, manager Marti was sacked at the beginning of the

Basque and enjoyed a successful career as a player. Since his retirement in 2010 he has been involved in the youth set up at Athletic Bilbao, coaching at the academy. The Athletic youth policy just simply has to work as remember they can only use Basque born players at the club. I am convinced that we potentially have a great new manager but my only slight concern is that he has not yet managed at professional level so will be able to handle the pressure? Anyway, a win will release a lot of pressure and help Etxeberria settle in. Today we welcome a desperate (yes, even more desperate than us) Cordoba side. Thankfully most of the injured Tenerife players are fit again with Italian Samuele Longo the most important returnee. Personally I am not worried about the dreaded "R" word. Okay, we are only one point off the drop zone, but if I had to stick my neck out I would predict a finish between 8th and 12th place on June 3rd. That is not to say I have given up completely on a play-off spot but we would need to win 4 or 5 on the trot to stand a chance. Anyway, rose tinted glasses aside my main aims for this season are for CDT to stay up, UD Las Palmas to come down and for CD Tenerife B to win promotion to the 2nd B. Amen.

Not forgetting that at the end of the January window we signed Alex Mula on loan from Malaga. Although having risen through the ranks at Malaga and scoring freely in the fourth tier, the jump to the first team this season seems to have been a bit premature. Here’s hoping he can make good use of his time with us, and give us the extra boost we need. Two draws in a row for the b team means that although they are still top of the table, San Fernando (with a game in hand) and Pio B are now snapping at their heels at just three points behind. Today (Sunday) sees them play a difficult away game at Lanzarote, whilst the Pios and San Fernando both have easier games. Tensions in the press conference on Monday, at the official announcement of Pep Martis’ departure. When confronted with a question about the culpability of sports director Serrano, Miguel Concepcion absolved him of any blame saying that the responsibility lies entirely with the coach once the players are signed. But when you fail to keep key players like Aaron Níguez and Germán Sánchez in the closed season, you have to take some responsibility in finding replacements that are of the same calibre.

Round Up It’s been a long time since you could say that the bottom is more interesting than the top, but with teams placed from eleventh to nineteenth having just three points separating them, Huescas’ unstoppable progress seems quite boring. Looking at the form table, Barcelona b and Albacete have staged a mini revival for themselves and unfortunately our current form is amongst the worst with just five points from six games. The teams placed from second to ninth should still fancy their chances of automatic promotion as the gap is now down to five points. Oviedos’ great form continues as does Valladolid, whose run probably looks better than it is due to most wins being against the bottom teams. Todays’ visitors Cordoba were Barca Bs’ latest victims and it is vital we take advantage. A win against them today could almost condemn them. But they made a lot of signings in the January window in hope of reviving their chances of survival, including Arsenal and Sevilla legend José Antonio Reyes, now aged 34.
