Stocktaking with Lemming Planning starts now for next season, so here’s my personal view on who stays and who goes. The veterans Vitolo, Aitor, Suso, and Raul Camara have newly extended deals but Vitolo looks to have the least chance of more games under Etxeberria. I wouldn’t rule out Vitolo looking elsewhere or starting a youth coaching role here. Dani stays, but lets be bold and sell Carlos Abad and Jorge. Neither have progressed this term and maybe, like Cristo Gonzalez, they won’t fulfil their potential here, so best to get money for new players before both lose their value. In defence Luiz Perez will keep improving, Camille is worth keeping and with B teamer Nahuel knocking on the door, lets ditch Inaki please. Tayron and Montañes don’t add anything to the squad and should go. Acosta might take some holding on to, he is class, but Luis Milla has been a great investment. Alberto is rock steady, and there were rumours of January bids for him, I hope we can keep him. Logic says Malaga will want Alex Mula back for their second division adventure, I’d love us to splash some money to sign him. What about the injury prone players? Longo hinted at leaving if we didn’t go up, and do we want to possibly carry him for the opening of the season if he needs more recovery time from his recent op? Big thanks to Longo but I’d say goodbye.
And how do you solve a problem like Juan Villar? Set a target. He must play at least one full 90 minute game in our last five, if not, let him go. Malbasic flickered briefly but is not good enough, let’s unload him somewhere. Casadesus has shown his worth in our toughest part of the campaign, hopefully at 32 years old he will see us as his best option for next season. Regardless of whether we nail down Etxeberria or not, we need to replace Serrano as Sporting Director. We need new ideas and new sources for signings, and fit players! The only consolation with missing the play offs is we can plan earlier and not end up doing last minute panic shopping. All easier said than done, but let’s hope the club are at least considering these arguments already.

By and large, it’s a grim business being a supporter, a forlorn struggle between daydreams and despair. It would take a miracle now to make the play offs but as it is still mathematically possible, we keep going. Realistically however we are facing another season in the 2nd tier, but we do have a lot to look forward to. Well I say that but there are reasons to be optimistic and reasons to be concerned, one being the strength of the league next time. Of the three teams coming down from La Liga, Deportivo, Malaga and Las Palmas, it would be something if at least one of them did not bounce straight back, especially with the new founded parachute payments in Spanish football. Then we have the clubs that will not be promoted this time, all similar size rivals for Tenerife in Real Oviedo, Valladolid, Zaragoza, Cadiz etc, so it will be a more competitive league for sure. But we all enjoy a challenge, and I take you back to 2001 when believe it or not in the 2nd Division we had teams of the calibre of Atletico Madrid, Real Betis and Sevilla. The top three were promoted directly in those days and we gained a glorious promotion under the managment of Rafa Benitez, along with Betis and Sevilla with incredibly Atletico missing out that time. One thing however is that we should be concerned about will be the cutting of our budget for the 2018-19 campiagn, which is calculated by the league. We enjoyed a high budget this year thanks to last seasons success and the sale of Nano, but next time we are likely to be outside the top ten wage limit budgets. We just need to hope that a young Ayoze comes through the ranks to make the difference. Anway, enjoy today, the pressure is off, but Almeria are fighting for their lives so it should be good.

Such was the annoyance of us being denied an obvious penalty in last week’s defeat. Villar’s remonstration with the officials saw him receive a yellow card before he even got on the pitch. Being his fifth card, he will not be playing today. That after being injured for so long. The same fate for Camara the week before when he got a red from the bench and received a three match ban. Silly boys! A defeat last week for the B team, although they still remain top. Four points are needed at the moment. Mensajero and San Fernando who are placed second and third, play each other this weekend. A draw or loss for Mensajero, coupled with a B team victory would see us clinch the group 12 title. They will then go on to play another group winner in a two leg tie for promotion. If they lose they still have a chance in the secondary play off round. Still waiting for Etxeberria’s signature on the contract, but it did move a little closer this week when he cut his ties with Athletic. Eleven games, six wins, four losses and a draw is his current record. Scoring twenty four times and conceding 15 (ten in the last three games), you can’t say it hasn’t been entertaining since he arrived.
Round Up Last week’s defeat sees Rayo take top position, with Sporting and Huesca just two points behind. These are the only three teams who can realistically reach the two auto promotion places, as Numancia in fourth are seven points behind. As for the play off places, Oviedo have a slim chance, but their recent form has been going downhill. Granada said goodbye to another coach after six games that yielded just six points. A big disappointment for them, and it looks like they’ll be with us for another season, as will Osasuna, who were relegated with them last year. At the bottom Sevilla Atletico and Lorca were both relegated. Lorca can still get to Almeria’s total of 42 points, but as they lost both of the head to head games, would still remain below them. Cordoba and Barca B still have plenty to fight for as they can still mathematically save themselves. Having said that Barca B have lost the last six straight games, so look likely to take the drop. Dodgy for Cordoba too as they still have to play the top three in the last five games.

Tenerife Juvenil just miss out on champions cup final A 48th minute penalty was enough to see Atlético Madrid through to the final, at the expense of our U18 team. Under the charge of club legend Cristo Marrero, we had progressed to the semi final after a well deserved victory over Bilbao. The tournament was held at the Estadio Ciudad de Puertollano in Castile La Mancha. A great experience for the lads, and congratulations in order for reaching the top four in their category. Other players to progress from this category to the senior squad are Suso, Jorge Sáenz, Nano and of course Ayoze Pérez.
