PATIENT TOWER ADDITION Highland Hospital - Rochester, NY Addition and renovation | Schematic design completed March 2019 HOLT Architects Role: Designer - Lead interior design vision and unit core layout | Assisted in exterior design vision | Assisted in code documentation

4

University of Rochester and Highland Hospital chose HOLT to help move from primarily semiprivate patient rooms for surgical recovery to private rooms. A vertical expansion was proposed to house the increase of rooms. We used evidence-based design to create a unit that will work well for both the staff and the patients by optimizing program location throughout the unit, pushing our patient room layout, and creating interactive elements and nodes for patients and their visitors that are reminiscient of the Highland neighborhood. I assisted in the project from concept design to construction documentation, working mostly on the interior layout and design.

Project Vision Statement – Provide an environment of care dedicated to quality and safety through a focus on standardization, facilitates good infection control practices and is sustainable.

“…staff felt fewer demands and less irritation during the “good” acoustics period. The incidence of re-hospitalization was higher for the bad acoustics group and was statistically significant at the three-month period. Patients treated during the good acoustics period considered the staff attitude to be much better than during the bad acoustics period.” -Influence of intensive coronary care acoustics on the quality of care and physiological state of patients. International Journal of Cardiology Provide sound absorbing materials, focused on areas where people gather, like Nurse Stations. Geometric ceiling tiles, wall tiles and art can be used in these locations to dampen noise and provide color, dimension and texture.

Include corridor markers and benchmarks “To best support care, environments must also draw patients out of their rooms, preventing isolation and promoting involvement with the greater patient community—a critical component of the rehab healing process.” - The Home Stretch: Designing Rehab Centers, Healthcare Design Magazine Markers and graphics to establish benchmarks and goals for orthopedic and bariatric patients activity.

Healthcare Quality Improve overall healthcare quality

Patient Safety Improve patient safety and quality of care

Patient Stress Reduce stress, improve quality of life and healing for patients and families

Staff Stress Reduce stress staff/fatigue, increase effectiveness in delivering care

NOREEN REALE FALCONE LIBRARY Le Moyne College - Syracuse, NY Phase II renovation | Construtction completed September 2018 HOLT Architects Role: Designer - Contributed to design of interior layout | Lead design of interior feature elements and exterior renovation studies | Completed construction documents

12 Plans & Interior Elevations: Revit

HOLT Architects was selected by Le Moyne College to design phase II of their main library’s renovation. The scope of the phase included the more popular stacks and their support spaces, computer clusters and IT support spaces, and the general library commons. We designed the project to take advatage of its interesting existing form in order to optimize natural light and views outward, creating an inviting library commons and engaging nodes throughout. I assisted with the design and documentation, from concept design through construction documentation and addenda.

This project is a renovation of the Moffett Center, which was previously the main gymnasium of Cortland Unviersity. But with a new sports complex in place, Cortland will use the Moffett Center to house several academic departments, from mathematics to Africana studies. HOLT Architects completed both phases of the renovation. I assisted in design development and construction documentation for the second phase.

MICRO CITY National V e t e r a n ’s Resource Complex In Collaboration with Yiwei Wu Syracuse, NY Spring 2016 | Prof. Larry Davis

24

The NVRC will be one of the most important new buildings on Syracuse University’s campus. Not only is it meant to be a welcoming and useful place for veteran’s and their families, but it is also the first building in the new campus Framework Plan, and thus will set the example for university buildings to come after it.

In response to this, we designed the parti of our NVRC to mimic the campus framework, which consists of bars of built, urban-esque areas, with connecting pathways throughout the campus. Not only does this create a modular design to be mimicked around the campus, but also creates urban-esque spaces within the project, that allow spacial separation, and yet allow visual connections throughout the project.

ECYCLING ON MANHATTAN’S WEST SIDE Saturated with educational institutions, populated by a diverse citizenry, and located nearby a generous public greenspace, the Lincoln Center neighborhood seems an unlikely setting for Manhattan’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF). With particular attention to recreation and particpation, the pairing of a library and parkscape with the MRF aims to rectify the usually unwelcome characteristics of such industrial operations. $

IDEA LAB & COMMUNITY CENTER Brooklyn, NY Spring 2014 | Prof. Bess Krietemeyer

42

Located on the Smith & 9th St. subway station in Brooklyn, this IDEA lab is designed to promote solutions for the pollution problem that has plagued this industrial part of Brooklyn for years. To include this mundane site in Brooklyn’s rising status, I have combined the lab with a community center, so it will be easy for those producing the ideas to share them with the community, and for the community to be part of the change. With large amounts of foot traffic from the center and the subway station, the site has the potential to bring life to industrial Brooklyn, and this proposal hopes to help the site reach its full potential.

METHOD MEDITATION AN EXPERIMENTAL DEMONSTRATION OF SYSTEMIZATION IN ARCHITECTURE

Thesis Project Fall 2016 - Spring 2017 | Prof. Joseph Godlewski

56 Pavilion Axons: Rhino, Illustrator

The place of psychology in architecture has always been a contentious topic. Though the physical environment has an effect on how occupants feel and behave, neither architects nor psychologists have been able to produce environments that can consistently create a desired effect. To address this situation, many architects, such as Christopher Alexander, have utilized methods similar to those of psychologists, consisting of patterns, graphs, and statistics. Though many great buildings have been designed using this systemization, others designed using the same systems have failed. This lack of consistency has been attributed to a lack of empirical evidence, current developmental methods, and even the personal biases of the architects themselves. Meanwhile, other artists and architects have used systemization to push the boundaries of their own design. In these cases, the effect the rules of the system have on the result is clear. And though the results are often far from the “perfect” design Alexander is searching for, the intent of the artist also remains clear. In this thesis, I have continued to test the legitimacy of systemization in architectural design by using a rigorous survey of potential users. My system is informed by previous experiments, yet also employs the critiques of these systems to inform the rules. It’s theorized the byproduct of this unlikely system should be the “perfect” space for calmness and relaxation. The system itself is designed based on the techniques and methods of Alexander. These are incorporated mainly in a series of components I have composed based on his fifteen fundamental principles of harmonious architecture. However, participants from outside the realm of architecture have provided the rules. They did so by choosing which of the designed components are best for calmness and relaxation via a series of surveys. I interpreted these survey results, and have designed a series of relaxation pavilions based on what the participants chose. I hypothesize these pavilions will not provide relaxation for all who enter them, nor “perfect” relaxation for anyone. However, these pavilions provide a forum to discuss order and systemization as a method to find “truth” in design. As a whole, the experiments reflect on the disciplinary expertise of architects and the role of user input in the design process.

INTO THE FOLD:

A FREEDOM BY DESIGN PROJECT Designed in collaboration with Jon Anthony and Tiffany Pau Proposal drawings in collaboration with Jake Copich, Jon Anthony, and Tiffany Pau Construction Drawings in collaboration with Jon Anthony, Tiffany Pau, Stephen Muir, and Russell Sheer Syracuse, NY Summer 2013 - Spring 2014 (End of Involvement) Into the Fold is an accessibility ramp for the Westminster Church in Syracuse. It was commissioned to provide accessibility for the members of its aging parish that are unable to climb the stairs that stood in front of all entrances to the sanctuary. To solve this, as well as the threat of falling icicles, we designed a ramp and awning. Also, to further stimulate the surrounding community, we incorporated space for outside worship and activities. Like all other Freedom by Design projects, Into the Fold was designed, pitched, drawn, budgeted, and built by members of the chapter.

Freedom By Design Syracuse AIAS Wrap

In order to alleviate these social problems, the design team propose a ramp for Westminster that wraps ARMAND DAMARI SKETCHES around the site, or "Wramp" for IN ORDER OF DEVELOPMENT 12. 20.13 short. The design intention was to create a safe space for the community by integrating seating and an outdoor barbeque space as well as to solve the technical issue of accessibility. The ramp, which extends for 24ft and rises 2 ft, is enclosed on the side by a wrapping structure that protects users from falling icicles, diverting gravitational force using its multiplanar shape. SPECTRUM HEALTH Spectrum Health - Grand Rapids, MI Summer 2016 During my summer at Spectrum Health, I had the opportunity to be part of a Facilities department that oversees the eight million square feet owned and used by the healthcare giant, which is still expanding at an incredible rate. Under the architects in the facilities dept., I assisted with drawing and planning for many of the personnel moves and renovations across the entire organization, and also went around the West Michigan region surveying many of the buildings of the newly acquired practices, so that the department would have record of the plans and site. It was also my responsibility to add all these changes and additions to ProLease for the department. In addition, I also was asked to help the organization’s push for more evidence-based design across its facilities, to make the most of the space already available. In response, the other two design interns and I visited many of the facilities and gathered data and asked the staff, practitioners, and patients questions about each space, and how it could be improved. We focused mainly on the overall layout of the exam rooms and work areas. After this process, we presented our findings of effectiveness and efficiency of each layout to the leadership of Spectrum Health. ISSUE DATE ISSUED FOR REVIEW
