ASMSA is your opportunity to be
Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts
The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts is the only school of its kind in the state, providing students the most dynamic STEM, arts and humanities education and the only program to do so in a residential setting. As a high school junior, you can join a community of students from across Arkansas who are dreamers, thinkers and doers at one of the nation’s top public high schools.
ASMSA students have a passion for taking challenging classes where they move away from memorizing isolated facts in favor of hands-on learning and toward true understanding. All classes are taught on the college level by an exemplary group of faculty, of which many have earned a Ph.D. Students are engaged in classes designed to challenge bright minds. Neurobiology, History of Infectious Diseases and American Studies are among the special classes students may take. Many students continue their studies through summer research internships at universities across the country.
ASMSA students have the opportunity to conduct real-world research guided by faculty mentors. STEM Emphasis students complete a Fundamentals in Research Methods (FIRM) project on a subject of their choice, often leading to recognition at state and national science fairs. ASMSA also offers the most expansive computer science program in the state. Our alumni have been involved in research on the Higgs boson discovery and the development of the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover mission.
ASMSA is a place where standing out means pursuing the extraordinary. Whether it’s painting a self-portrait, building a musical instrument, taking a stunning photograph, or writing original poetry and prose, our students have the opportunity to be creative in many ways. Students may choose to pursue a Humanities Emphasis, allowing them to explore their interest in literature, global languages, art, history and social sciences.
Live, learn and excel within a community of 230 social and academic peers who come to ASMSA from schools across Arkansas. The Student Center features supervised, suite-style living, the Dolphin Bay CafĂŠ and the ASMSA Library Research Center. Numerous extracurricular activities are available, including sports, band, choir, quiz bowl and other clubs. Security is provided 24 hours a day on campus. Access to the Student Center is granted through a key-card system that ensures student safety.

Our Global Learning Program opens doors of possibility to students as they explore other languages and cultures through study abroad and visits from international guests. Every student who participates in the program receives a grant to pay a portion of the trip’s cost. Many of the travelers receive full-cost, needs-based scholarships. This allows all students the opportunity to study abroad regardless of family income. Advanced levels of Spanish and French as well as beginning levels of Mandarin Chinese and Japanese are also available for credit.
ASMSA offers a “college bridge” program where each student earns at least 30 hours of college credit, allowing many of our alumni to begin college as a sophomore while saving thousands of dollars in tuition. Nearly 60 classes are available for college credit. Our alumni have earned more than $166 million in scholarship offers from some of the nation’s top institutions of higher learning. ASMSA has a dedicated staff of academic counselors who guide our students throughout the college application process, including providing recommendation letters for students.
To apply for admission to ASMSA, students must be in their sophomore year and a resident of the state of Arkansas. Students must have a minimum 3.25 unweighted grade point average and have taken the ACT or SAT. ASMSA admits approximately 120 students each year through a competitive admissions process that includes a review of grades, test scores, essays and letters of recommendation. Most of all, ASMSA seeks students who are passionate about learning.
