Message from the Judges

On behalf of all the judges, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every business and individual that has taken part in the 2022 Innovation & Excellence Awards program.

The awards continue to recognise and celebrate innovation and success in Australian architecture, construction, project management and commitment to our industry.

As always the judges were impressed by the high quality of entries, which continues to make the selection of a winner for each category a very difficult task.

These awards are the results of so many. So, on behalf of the judging panel

John V. McCarthy AO

CHAIR & NATIONAL JUDGE John is recognised as a property industry leader. He has previously served as the National President of the Property Council of Australia, Chairman of the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council and Chairman Co-operative Research Centre for Construction Innovation.

John currently holds various corporate board positions including Chairman of the Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre and formerly Adjunct Professor at QUT School of Urban Development Faculty of the Built Environment and Engineering. In May 2010 John was elected World President of the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction, and in 2009 was awarded the Order of Australia for services to the property and construction industries. John works out of Sydney as NonExecutive Chairman, AEH Property.

Adrian Harrington

FUTURE LEADER JUDGE Adrian is Head of Wholesale IR and Fund Raising at Charter Hall. He has more than 30 years of experience in the funds management and real estate industries.

He is currently Chairman of the Federal Government’s National Housing Finance & Investment Corporation (NHFIC). He was formerly Head of Funds Management at Folkestone, CEO Funds Management, UK and USA for Mirvac Group and has held senior positions at James Fielding Group, Deutsche Asset Management, Paladin Australia and the Property Council of Australia.

Arabella Rohde

NATIONAL JUDGE Arabella is a Senior Development Manager for ISPT Commercial Portfolio in Canberra ACT. With nearly 25 years of experience, Arabella has held a number of roles across the built environment sector including a wide range of geographies, asset classes, industry sectors including commercial, education, health, residential and infrastructure.

With a diverse background including sustainability, town planning and construction, Arabella has experience with the full life cycle of projects, from feasibility and planning to delivery and operation. Through her focus on strategic and project execution and a strong emphasis on driving innovation, Arabella has gained extensive experience with complex projects that have strong stakeholder and customer focus and achieve commercial, sustainability and community outcomes. She is a vocal and active advocate for the property sector, including current leadership role as the ACT Division Council President – Property Council of Australia.

Clinton Ostwald

DIVERSITY JUDGE Clinton is an economics and property investment expert, with a focus on developing urban environments that create material benefits — for his clients and the community. He is adept at preparing market and economic insights that shape the development of major cities elements such as town centre mixed-use precincts, retail centres, residential areas and employment nodes. Clinton applies his analytical and creative skills in areas as diverse as highest and best use strategies, economic impact assessments, retail master planning, residential market assessments and specialised land uses — such as student accommodation, education, health and tourism.

Clinton has had a long involvement with the Property Council of Australia, being a past member of the Diversity Committee (Deputy Chair), Corporate Real Estate Committee (Chair) and Retail Committee (Member). He has also presented Property Council Academy courses for over 15 years and has judged the Property Council of Australia Innovation and Excellence Diversity Awards since its inception in 2017.

Denis Coupland

NATIONAL JUDGE Denis is a National Director of Colliers International. Having completed over 36 years in the property industry, Denis is an industry leader in the management of major assets and portfolios for Global and Australian institutions, Federal and State Governments, Developers and Private Investors.

Denis has specialised in the planning, leasing, commissioning, management and sale of major commercial, industrial and retail projects. Denis is the chair of the Property Council of Australia’s Professional Development Committee and, since 1997 has been involved with a range of state and national committees and industry conferences. He has also been a member of the judging panel for the Property Council of Australia/ Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards since 2006 and awarded Life Membership of the Property Council Academy in 2019.

Kristiana Greenwood

NATIONAL JUDGE Kristiana is the Director Strategic Relationships at GJK Facility Services. Prior to this role, she was the Co-founder and Director of FM Innovations, an award-winning technology company which she sold in early 2019 to Zuuse, a leading global software platform for construction and building operations. Kris is a graduate of AICD and was appointed the first female Chair of FMA Australia in 2015, and is currently on the board as the Immediate Past Chair. She is a Non-Executive Director of Zuuse, an Ambassador of Housing All Australians, a Director of TEN Women, an Advisory Board member of PNO Insurance and an Advisory Board Member of GJK.

Médy Hassan OAM FRSN FAIB

NATIONAL JUDGE Médy Hassan is the Founder of Haus Holdings, Co-founder of Vitae Capital, and CEO of investLogan. His passion is applying commercial strategies to maximise improvements in financial, social, and environmental wellbeing. His companies are fundamentally social enterprises which specialise in equity, property, and the venture markets. He is a recognised national champion of diversity, inclusion and belonging. With 25 years global and national experience working across all tiers of government, universities corporate institutions, and private investors, he has overseen $3B of investments and transactions. In 2021 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia; he is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Building and is a Fellow of the Royal Society.

John Oliver

NATIONAL JUDGE John held an executive role in a professional cost consultancy practice for thirty-two years and has experience in every major facet of the profession working on projects with the smallest of budgets through to those in the hundreds of millions. His experience covers projects within the major cities of Australia, isolated civil projects and those overseas. He has lectured in cost planning and economics to graduate and post-graduate courses and provided expert witness advice in legal disputes. John’s skills lie in a hands-on approach bringing his experience in contractual and cost planning matters together to provide risk-averse strategies.

Natasha Teychenne

DIVERSITY JUDGE Natasha Teychenne is the Property Council of Australia’s Head of People and Culture. Natasha is an experienced HR executive, having led across all disciplines of HR with a particular expertise in organisational development, cultural transformation and learning and development. Aligning business strategies with human performance is the essence of what Natasha’s career has been devoted to for nearly two decades. Cultivating cultures where people can become the best and most authentic versions of themselves is her passion. Natasha holds a Master of Psychology, is a registered practicing Psychologist, and is a certificated facilitator in Achieve Global (now Miller Heiman Group). During her career she held senior HR roles at companies such as PPB Advisory, Telstra and CSC Australia. Natasha started her career as an executive coach and consultant working across a wide range of ASX listed companies and public sector organisations in the areas of strategic M&A, culture development and organisational design. In her personal life, Natasha is passionate about mindfulness, spending time with friends and family, travel, exercise and loves laughing with her two gorgeous nieces.

Nikki Robinson

NATIONAL JUDGE Nikki is a Partner in the award winning Real Estate Group as well as Partner-in-Charge of Clayton Utz’s Sydney office. She has over 22 years’ experience advising both public and private sector clients on strategic, commercial and legal issues affecting all forms of property, infrastructure and procurement related matters.

Nikki was voted as Real Estate Partner of the Year for both 2016 and 2017 at the Australian Lawyers Weekly awards (and finalist in 2018). She is ranked as a leading practitioner by legal directories including Legal 500, Chambers and Doyle’s Guide. She is also Deputy Chair of the PCA’s Property and Precincts Committee NSW and a Non-Executive Director for Youth off the Streets.

Nikki’s other job as a mother of two teenage girls and one almost teenager reinforces her hands on approach for finding practical and innovative solutions on a daily basis — they’ve also honed her negotiation skills and diplomacy skills!

Judges

Rosina Di Maria

NATIONAL JUDGE Rosina is a Principal in global architecture and design firm Woods Bagot. She is an Interior Designer with extensive global experience across Europe, Russia, Asia and Australia. In London, Rosina led HSBC’s Global Headquarters at Canary Wharf and other prestigious projects for Bloomberg, Google, Barclays Capital, Cisco and Macquarie Group. Rosina delivered notable projects such as Grosvenor House by Jumeirah, Eccleston Square Hotel and award-winning Minthis Hills Golf Resort in Cyprus. On return to Australia, Rosina has led the interior design of the ground-breaking South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), Adelaide Convention Centre expansion, Hilton Collins Bar, the refurbishment of iconic Great Southern Rail’s Platinum Class on The Ghan and is leading BHP in their global portfolio of works and the refurbishment of the National Gallery of Australia’s James O Fairfax Theatre.

Rosina holds a position on the Property Council of Australia SA Division Council. Rosina is a strong supporter of the Arts and is Ministerially appointed as a Board Member of Jam Factory and Carclew Youth Arts. She is a national judge for multiple industry design awards.

Ross Duckham

NATIONAL JUDGE Ross is a highly accomplished urban planner with twenty years’ industry experience in Australia and the UK, currently a Senior Associate based Hatch RobertsDay. He has worked on a range of industry committees for Property Council in Western Australia and serves as a judge for state as well as national awards.

Ross’ diverse expertise includes strategic project and property advice, project leadership in large and innovative infill projects, complex growth management, urban economics, place productivity, profitable urban sustainability, and stakeholder engagement and leadership.

Stephen Mee

DIVERSITY & FUTURE LEADER JUDGE Stephen is the Managing Director of Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) in New South Wales, and a member of the Global Board and Oceania Executive Committee. He has extensive experience in cost planning and financial reporting related to construction projects and prides himself on attaining the best value for money while respecting the clients project goals and bringing their imagination to life. Stephen’s flagship projects include the new Sydney Fish Markets, Barrack Place, 33 Alfred Street revitalisation, Chatswood Chase Redevelopment, Greenland Tower, Opera Residence and David Jones refurbishment.

Stephen has worked with the Property Council of Australia on numerous occasions during his four decades in the industry and is also a board member of Monte Sant Angelo College, North Sydney. Stephen is extremely proud of the long relationship RLB has with the Property Council of Australia and its sponsorship of the Innovation and Excellence Awards.

Susan MacDonald

NATIONAL JUDGE Susan has domestic and international experience in property investment management, primarily in the retail sector, including asset, development, and funds management. Susan has held Executive positions with Mirvac, Lendlease, Galileo Funds Management and AMP Capital. Susan is currently a Non-Executive Director of Cbus Property, QIC, Landcom and Waypoint REIT. She is a Strategic Advisor to Mainbrace Constructions and a Global Trustee of Urban Land Institute (ULI).

Karen Wong

NATIONAL JUDGE Karen is a Studio Director at Bates Smart’s Melbourne studio, where over the past decade she has created a lasting impact on the way people and communities engage with the practice’s designs. Karen has been instrumental in the delivery of complex projects including Collins House, Capital Grand, Hilton Melbourne Little Queen Street and Box Hill Central North. Karen’s extensive international experience has also enabled her to adeptly engage with clients looking to enter the Australian market. Karen sits on the board and juries for the Council for Tall Buildings Australia, is a member of the Property Council’s Build to Rent Group and judges the Bates Smart Graduate Prize at the University of Melbourne.

Jen Williams

FUTURE LEADER JUDGE Jen Williams is Queensland Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia — the nation’s leading advocate for Queensland’s biggest industry. Starting in the role of Senior Policy Advisor in 2011, Jen was appointed Deputy Executive Director in 2014, before taking on the position of Executive Director in 2021. In this role, Jen is responsible for developing and implementing the organisation’s engagement, policy and advocacy strategies throughout Queensland. Prior to joining the Property Council, Jen held numerous public and private sector roles across the fields of social science, education, politics and development.
