It is with great pleasure that we bring you the 2021 vintage from Burgundy, a year characterised by fortitude, solidarity, the lowest yields in years, and surprising quality. Our Master Sommelier, Nicolas Clerc, has been on the ground to bring you the inside take on this unique vintage.

We are lucky to work with some of the finest domaines in the Côte-d'Or. Our recent visit confirmed the deep understanding our vignerons hold of their craft and terroir. With few exceptions, we were deeply impressed by the quality produced under the most trying circumstances.

The challenges of the year are well-documented: a warm early spring brought early budbreak, fo lowed by a devasting b ack frost in Apri , destroying the young buds. Damp weather preva led throughout the early Summer, encourag ng the spread of powdery m ldew and other d sease. Thankfully the weather f na ly improved before Harvest al ow ng the v nes to dry out and ripen fully and hea th ly The severity of the damage, so ear y in the grow ng season, caused despondency across the region. The Côte de Beaune suffered the most, w th some Domaines los ng as much as 80% o the r crop as early as Apr l At Doma ne S mon B ze n Sav gny-les-Beaune w th the except on of Aux Verge esses, the estate’s 1er Crus w l be bott ed as a s ngle 1er Cru blend. This was also the case at Doma ne Michel Lafarge and Domaine Reburgeon-Mure, each produc ng a single Vo nay 1er Cru Blend

The key to qua ity was to harvest even less but to look for opt ma qual ty. Heavy sorting was essential as was h gh ighted at Domaine d’Eugen e Domaine Jean Gr vot and Doma ne AF Gros Matthias Parent admitted he was orig na ly very scared about the qual ty of the v ntage but thankfu ly the w nes evolved with time and developed dur ng their maturat on Th s feel ng was a so shared by Jean-Marc B a n at Doma ne B ainGagnard who was unsure of the prof le of the vintage unti malo actic fermentation was underway, develop ng a much needed structure to his wh te wine.

Upon tasting widely in October and November, from barre or tank en masse’ to be bottled over the com ng months), t became apparent that the qual ty o what was harvested is very good and n some nstances extraord nary

PINOT NO R

Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru ‘La Toppe au Vert’ were amongst the h gh ights of our tast ngs and represent some of best va ue n al of Burgundy. Math lde Gr vot of Doma ne Jean Grivot and Nicolas Potel of Domaine Roche de Bel ene shared the same approach So ong as the skins were healthy, a gent e nfus on (thereby lim ting extraction) was an mportant means of keeping the purity of fru t.

At Doma ne de Mont l e the estate unfortunate y lost 70% of their crop. For Bouchard Père et Fi s, 2021 saw the lowest product on in the entire history of the Doma ne Some estates lost entire v neyards In the Côte de Nu ts, some vi lages wh ch escaped the frost were later affected by disease such as mi dew JeanLuc and Er c Burguet n Gevrey-Chambertin ma nta ned s m lar y e ds to 2020 (which were not part cularly high), but Domaine Ghis aine Barthod n Chambol eMusigny suffered up to 75% osses in certain parcels, Doma ne Jean Gr vot suffered a reduct on of 50% For many the on y way to keep going was to give extra attent on the remaining fru t as best they cou d and hope that 2022 would br ng better luck in y elds. It was a vintage of hardsh p, sol dar ty and keep ng one step ahead of the w ldly unpredictable weather.

The Pinot Noir is pure, prec se, and express ve of its terroir. Since 2018 the reg on has exper enced a run of so ar v ntages with the reds characterised by sweet, r pe fru t and generous body The 2021 vintage s more tradit onal y Bourguignon the fru t s tense and racy offering precis on of f avour, a gr ppy tann c structure, nervy ac d ty and moderate a cohol levels Most of the producers have l mited the mpact of the new oak and a we have noticed a tendency of shortening the age ng n barre s across our range of producers.

At Doma ne M che Mal ard n Ladoix-Serr gny qual ty s exce lent, from h s Ladoix up to the Corton Grand Crus M chel expla ned to us the necessity of thorough sort ng n the vineyards to ensure only healthy grapes made the blend H s Lado x C os Royer’ and

At Doma ne Georges Roumier in Chambol e-Mus gny we had the p easure of meet ng the next generat on Alex s Aubin. Wh lst Christophe st l cal s the shots, Alex s spoke w th great nuance about the chal enges and character of the v ntage. The w nes offer pure P not finesse, character sed by a supp e, ju cy palate and f rm grippy texture. CHARDONNAY

Wh lst the Chardonnay may not offer the consistency of the P not No r, there are some impressive wines to be found Sabine Mo lard at Doma ne Marc Morey descr bed 2021 t to us as “a very good vintage”, breath ng a s gh of re ief before saying: “I am happy”. Sabine’s Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Crus Les Vergers and En Virondot were amongst the most vibrant saline and precise wh tes that we have tasted at the domaine. Jacquel ne and her son Matthieu at Doma ne Thomas-Co lardot are exc ted about qua ity call ng t

Pierre-Anton n of Doma ne Darviot-Perr n was also very happy, descr bing the vintage as “a return to a very trad t onal style” noting the styl stic d fferences from the recent hot years we have become accustomed to. However the estate suffered a 60% decrease n yie d and we expect our smal allocat on to be h ghly sought-after. At Doma ne Lefla ve n Pu igny-Montrachet a warm we come awaited us from Br ce de la Morandière and w nemaker Pierre Vincent. The wines were among our high ights of the v ntage terro rexpressive complexandcomplete.

The most recent of the Dauvissat domaines n Chablis, Doma ne Agnès and Didier Dauvissat re eased its f rst vintage in 1989. It now stretches over 10 ha, w th parcels in Petit Chablis, Chabl s village and the prem er cru Beauroy. Florent the r son, is now at the helm of the property, crafting vibrant zesty and d stinctly mineral expressions of Chabl s Despite be ng a re atively new producer Doma ne Agnès and Didier Dauvissat s already mak ng a name for itself with their pure and ncredibly good va ue expressions of Chardonnay.

Will am Fèvre has become the benchmark for class c Chab is. S nce Will am founded his doma ne in 1959, some of the most sought-after vineyards have been added to the portfol o which now totals 78 ha includ ng 5 of the 7 Grands Crus. No other producer can cla m such an array of the f nest vineyards in Chablis. The Premiers Crus see 30% to 40% maturat on in barrel while the Grands Crus have 40% to 50%, both n old wood.

“This vintage was a demanding one, and required constant attention to detail. The vines were severely affected by the frost, causing a delay in growth. The harvest started on the 17th of September and yields were 50% down on what we usually obtain. This year, we used stainless steel tanks for our fermentation for all wines, and then moved them in oak for maturation (we do the contrary in a solar year). "W nter was wet and warm with a particularly warm February, to the po nt that work in the vineyards was carried out wearing short sleeves. These conditions made the vines bud earlier than usual, causing the April frost to be particular y devastating. The grow ng season continued with a very rainy Spring and Summer, increasing the pressure from oidium and grey rot. Although frost did not impact fruit quality, it severely limited the production, with an estimated loss of -80% on total. The estate hasn t seen such low yields since the 1930s. Careful sorting and pick ng was key to bring home quality grapes and the result ng wines are flavourful and balanced with moderate alcoho ripe tannins and ifted acid ty." 6

We are pleased to we come Jean-Baptiste Jessiaume to our selection Based in Santenay, the estate comprises 9 ha of v nes. Jean Baptiste comes from a long fam ly l ne involved n wine stretch ng back over 200 years. Initially, the Jessiaumes were merchants and accountants in the 18th century and offered a selection of f ne wines from the ne ghbouring communes n the southern Côte de Beaune. In 1830, the fam ly acquired v neyards and became vignerons outr ght w th substantial parce s located around Santenay. This continued unti 2007 when Jean Baptiste’s father and uncle rel nqu shed the vines. If Jean Baptiste had a ready been steeped in viticulture and w nemaking (collecting the Young Burgund an Winemaker of the Year n 2012 at the age of 23), his teenage years were spent n other verdant f elds: footba l p tches Common sense prevailed and he returned to his roots in Santenay After a stint as head winemaker for a arge Côte Cha onnaise Doma ne, he finally set up his own business in 2019 and the select on c osely echoes the offerings of his forebears 200 years ago These are beautifully terroir-express ve wines and offer some of the best value in the reg on.

Name

A dynamic and talented w nemaker, Benjamin Leroux made a name for himse f at Domaine du Comte Armand where he was the genera manager unt l 2014 Based in Beaune, he launched his own label in 2007, so d d two jobs at once for some years. Wines are produced from over 20 vineyards but th s remains very much a micro-winery. Apart from 8.3 ha owned by the Domaine, grapes are purchased from trusted growers most of whom are either organic or biodynamic. In 2017 he took on the running of 2.5 ha in Meursault Blagny.

"2021 has seen extreme losses in the vineyard due to frost; some cuvees were not even produced. A little chaptalisation had to be done to help carry the alcoholic fermentation a bit further. We have been experimenting with an increasing amount of whole cluster in his reds, resulting in wines of greater purity and finesse. Notably, in 2021 the Pinot profile is firmer, supported by a tannic frame and balanced acidity, compared to recent solar vintages. Quality is good and everyone is happy with the overall results." “We harvested on the 15th of September. We lost 80% of the production, for it was too difficult for me not to stick to what I believe. We have generated real change in the vineyard and we did not want to alter this, so we maintained the minimum treatment. Jacqueline Collardot couldn t res st the ca l of tradition when her father retired from the fam ly Domaine. She took over the Doma ne s 2.5 hectares in 2011 and the f rst vintage she oversaw n its entirety was 2015. The estate boasts an impressive range of vil age wines and two premiers crus. The emphasis will remain on showcasing terroir through offer ngs of single vineyard bottl ngs. Al the v neyard work s e ther done by hand or horse depend ng on the parcel. The w nes are pressed gently and slow y, and fermentation occurs w th natural wi d yeasts. Barrels are then blended nto sta nless steel tank for three months before bottling . "A catastrophic growing season with gel noir affecting about 80% of the 1er Cru sites where budding happens earlier. Only 10% of yields were lost in the Village sites, apart from the Lieu-dit La Plante des Champs' where young vines are more vigorous and budded earlier, resulting in 90% of crop lost. Oidium pressure contributed to a further 60% reduction. Quantities are minimal, but the resulting wines are rich and dense. There are lots of changes at the Domaine including a complete overhaul of the oak used, some vineyards officially entering their organic conversion, a brand new Aligoté sourced from Orsch - close to Saint Romainand a Hautes-Côtes de Beaune."

"This is a very clear and intense vintage, pure and bright, especially for the reds. It was a very difficult and emotional growing season. We were very careful about the use of the lees and whole bunches, as the vines were stressed at a very early stage. "2021 was overall a classic vintage. Frost damage was limited, but oidium posed the main challenge and was particularly damaging in the vineyards of the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, where about 60% of the crop had to be discarded. In the cellar we continued to increase the amount of the whole bunch used across all the cuvees, ranging from 25% to 50%, resulting in wines of great elegance and suppleness."

“We have a vintage much smaller than 2020. The challenge in Chambolle was mostly from the diseases and the wet summer. We were not that much affected by the frost. Christophe decided to shorten the ageing in oak, for the wines are lighter and more fragile. Ét enne Gr vot took over from his father n 1990, making him the fifth generation of the Grivot fami y to produce wine n Vosne-Romanée. In recent years, Mathi de and Hubert have taken over The Domaine extends overs 15 ha across 22 appellations w th holdings in Vosne-Romanée Nuits-Saint-Georges, C os de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. The vines average 40 to 50 years in age. Ferti isers and treatments are kept to a min mum n the vineyards. In the cellar, the grapes are 100% de-stemmed and fermentat ons start naturally. There is one pump-over per day, following fermentation, and the w nes are matured n wood for 15 months

Louis Boillot moved from his fami y property in Volnay to Ghislane Barthod’s home in Chambolle when they got married. He learnt h s craft with h s brother and father at Domaine Lucien Bo llot until 2003, when he started out on h s own. Louis’s approach is that of the utte raisonnée or “reasoned struggle”. Follow ng a sorting of the grapes in the vineyard, a l bunches are destemmed, g ven a quick soak prior to fermentation, before spend ng 16-18 months n barrel with no more than 30% new oak.
