2009-10 Army Athletic Association Annual Report

Page 1

A MESSAGE FROM KEVIN ANDERSON Dear Black Knight Fans, It is my sincere pleasure to present our annual report which reflects on our many success stories in 2009-10. I am proud to say that, once again, our coaches, administrators and cadet-athletes fulfilled our mission of winning while developing leadership, demonstrating character and competing with integrity. It was a very successful year on the field. Seven teams claimed Patriot League regular-season or tournament championships, and three of those squads advanced to the NCAA postseason. Our programs continued to post signature victories such as the men’s lacrosse team’s thrilling overtime win at two-time defending national champion Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Our cadet-athletes stocked the trophy case with several individual awards. Army boasted six Patriot League Rookies of the Year, including volleyball’s Ariana Mankus who became the first player in league history to garner both the rookie honor and the Player of the Year award in the same season. In addition to conference recognition, the year was highlighted by baseball shortstop Clint Moore’s selection as a finalist for the prestigious AAU Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the nation. We continue to provide our cadet-athletes with the best mentors and leaders possible as evidenced by our five Patriot League Coach of the Year selections. In addition to success on the fields of friendly strife, our cadets excelled in the classroom. Four different Army athletes were named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports, while five cadets earned Academic All-America accolades. Recently-commissioned 2nd Lt. Elizabeth Betterbed, a standout on the women’s soccer team, was one of 32 American recipients of the Rhodes Scholarship and graduated as the top-ranked cadet in the Class of 2010 based on her academic, physical and military results. As we move forward, we are confident that the 2010-11 season will bring even greater success. Your continued generosity is vital to providing an unparalleled athletic experience. As we strive to develop leaders of characters who play to win, and win with honor, it is imperative that we provide our cadets with the necessary resources. Your support is a key component to fulfilling that mission. On behalf of the entire department, I would like to thank each of our supporters.

OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

ARMY AT YANKEE STADIUM SERIES TO DEBUT IN 2011

• At the Patriot League Outdoor Championships the Army men were second, marking the 19th consecutive year the men have been either first or second. The women earned third place.

Playing football games at the original Yankee Stadium was a staple of the Army football program throughout much of the last century. The Black Knights will be returning to their New York City heritage in the near future as Army has agreed to play three of its home games at the new Yankee Stadium in the years ahead, it was announced by Army Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson and New York Yankees Chief Operating Officer Lonn Trost at a Yankee Stadium press conference last July. The “Army at Yankee Stadium Series” will include games against Rutgers on Nov. 12, 2011, Air Force on Nov. 3, 2012, and Boston College on Nov. 8, 2014. Army will serve as the home team for all three contests, with CBS College Sports Network televising the games to a national audience. “Playing football games at Yankee Stadium was a big part of Army’s football history from the 1920s through the 1960s,” said Anderson. “This exciting partnership with the Yankees allows the Army program to harken back to its past. Our fans will enjoy the state-of-the-art amenities offered by the new Yankee Stadium and will provide an unforgettable experience for our fans, players and the Corps of Cadets. We feel that being associated with a world-class organization like the Yankees will help carry our marketing and branding efforts to new heights.” Army teams played at the original Yankee Stadium on 38 occasions from 1925 to 1969. Notre Dame ranked as the Black Knights’ most common opponent during that span with Army battling the Fighting Irish 22 times over that time. The long-standing tradition of Army-Notre Dame games at Yankee Stadium will also be renewed on Nov. 20, 2010, when the Black Knights and Fighting Irish clash in the schools’ 50th matchup. The game was originally scheduled to be played in South Bend. It will be the first college football game played in the new Yankeee Stadium.
