A MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

BOO CORRIGAN Dear Friends, It is my distinct honor to present this year’s annual report which documents our many success stories from the 2012-13 season. It was another great year as our cadets, coaches and staff proved their committment to winning the right way and competing at the highest level while pursuing our mission of developing leaders of character that are committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country. It was one of the most successful seasons in recent memory on the fields of friendly strife. Our teams combined to post an overall record of 236-183-8. The program’s .562 winning percentage was the highest in eight years. The winter sports programs had their best season in five years as the women’s basketball team won the Patriot League regular season title, the men’s basketball team posted its first winning season in 28 years and the rifle squad advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 10th consecutive season. As a program, we celebrated five teams that earned Patriot League regular season or tournament titles, four teams that advanced to their respective NCAA postseasons and qualified 15 individuals for NCAA competition. Our cadets continued to prove they can be competitive with their peers while also excelling in the unique academic and military requirements at West Point. In 2012-13, we had seven All-Americans, 15 conference major award winners and accounted for more than 100 all-league citations. Hockey’s Cheyne Rocha and lacrosse’s Brendan Buckley each captured the Senior CLASS Award in their respective sports, making Army the only school in the nation to have multiple winners in 2012-13. The Senior CLASS, which stands for celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, honors the attributes of NCAA Division I senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. We also had another great season in the classroom. Five of our cadets captured their conference’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, while Buckley and Rocha represented West Point on Academic All-America teams. Twenty of our 24 NCAA programs scored above the national average in the latest NCAA APR report. The men’s cross country and wrestling teams earned public recognition for finishing in the top 10 percent of their respective sport. The cross country squad boasted a perfect score of 1,000. It was also a great year in the competition against our fellow service academies. We split the season series versus Navy, 1616-1, marking the best winning percentage against the Mids (.500) since 2004-05. We owned a 4-2-1 record against Air Force, improving our record to 20-18-2 (.525) versus service academy foes in 2012-13. Our coaches were also recognized for their leadership ability. Women’s basketball coach Dave Magarity was one of four Army mentors to claim Patriot League Coach of the Year accolades, including Zach Spiker (men’s basketball), Paul Peck (women’s tennis) and Mickey Wender (men’s swimming & diving). As successful as this past season was, we look forward to giving you even more reason for excitement in the future. The Army A Club annual fund increased by 37% over the previous year thanks to the support of approximately 4,350 members. The continued growth of the A Club plays a crucial role in our ability to continue providing the best experience possible for our cadet-athletes. To find out more about the Army A Club and how you can enhance the cadet-athlete experience, visit www.goARMYsports.com/ aclub, call (845) 938-2322, or email armyaclub@usma.edu. Thank you again for all of your support of Army Athletics. I appreciate all of your contributions to our success. Go Army, Beat Everyone! Eugene F. Corrigan Jr. Director of Athletics

ARMY SCORES WELL ON APR

Twenty of Army’s 24 NCAA-sponsored programs scored above the NCAA Division I average for their respective sports in the latest Academic Progress Rate report released on Tuesday. The men’s cross country and wrestling teams highlighted the report, posting scores that ranked in the top 10 percent. The men’s cross country team posted a perfect score of 1,000, while the wrestling squad earned a mark of 985. Twelve Army programs ranked among the top 30 percent of their sports, including the football team. The Black Knights’ score of 971 ranked in the 80-90th percentile, besting the overall Division I mark of 949 and the Football Bowl Subdivision mark of 954. Other teams posting scores in the 70th percentile or better included baseball (80-90th, 989), men’s basketball (70-80th, 970), men’s indoor track & field (80-90th, 987), men’s outdoor track & field (70-80th, 987), women’s soccer (70-80th, 992), softball (70-80th, 993), women’s swimming & diving (70-80th, 993), women’s indoor track & field (80-90th, 994) and women’s outdoor track & field (80-90th, 996). Every Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year, based on the eligibility, graduation and retention of each scholarship student-athlete. Teams scoring below certain thresholds can face consequences, such as practice restrictions and restrictions on postseason competition. Rates are based on the past four years’ performance. The latest report includes information from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.

ARMY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION AWARD MANKUS & THUL EARN 2013 ARMY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION AWARD Volleyball star Ariana Mankus and All-America lacrosse player Garrett Thul were honored with Army’s highest athletic honor on Friday afternoon when they were presented with the Army Athletic Association Award during the Awards Convocation as a part GARRETT THUL of graduation week festivities at Robinson Auditorium. The prestigious Army Athletic Association trophy is awarded annually to the male and female cadets who display the “most valuable service to intercollegiate athletics during a career as a cadet.” Mankus, a four-time league allARIANA MANKUS star and two-time Patriot League Player of the Year, was the female winner, while Thul, a four-time all-league selection and Army’s all-time goals leader, was presented with the male award. This year marks the 109th anniversary of the award that was first presented to football player Horatio Hackett in 1904. Mankus is the second volleyball player to win the award and first since 2009. Thul is the sixth lacrosse player to garner the award and second over the last three years. A native of Lisle, Ill., Mankus graduated as one of the top all-around volleyball players in Army history. She finished her career second on Army’s career kills (1,563) and digs (1,424) lists and is one of just three players all-time to reach the century mark in both statistical categories. The aforementioned statistics rank sixth and seventh in Patriot League history, respectively.

A three-time first team All-Patriot League performer, including a unanimous selection in 2012, she is one of two Black Knights to earn AVCA All-Northeast Region honors and was named ECAC Offensive Player of the Year last fall. Her career began as impressive as it ended, as Mankus became the first player in league history to win Player and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season. She was also a key kog in Army’s first Patriot League title in 15 years in 2009 and the team’s first NCAA Division I Tournament appearance. The Black Knights averaged 22 wins per season with Mankus on the court. A team captain, Mankus was a four-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member and a twotime Academic All-Patriot League honoree. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president entered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and graduated with a degree in Art, Philosophy and Literature at West Point’s recent commencement ceremony. One of the most prolific goal scorers in the country, Thul became Army’s career leader in goals (163) in 2013 and finished second on the Patriot League’s all-time goals list. A three-time All-American and three-time Patriot League first team honoree, he is the only player in program history to record three 40-goal seasons (2010, 2011, 2013). Thul has consistently ranked amongst the top goal scorers annually, including third in 2011 and fifth as a senior. His four seasons all rank in the top 12 on Army’s single-season goals ledger. A starting attackman every game of his career, he garnered Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors and Inside Lacrosse National Rookie of the Year plaudits in 2010. Both honors came as Army took a magical ride to the conference title and quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. Thul set the program’s freshman record for points (42) and goals (34) that season. He led Army to four Patriot League Tournament berths and a top 20 national ranking every season of his career.

A native of Flemington, N.J., he helped Army author a 5-0 record against rival Navy and headlined the only class in program history to beat the Mids five times. Thul’s 19 career goals scored against Navy stand as a series record. Thul, who scored 29 career hat tricks, served as a team tri-captain in 2013. An Environmental Science major, he entered the Infantry branch of the U.S. Army upon graduation.

“To me, what our military does for us is so important. We’re here to play a game, but they’re here to protect us. Every day I wake up, I feel safe. That’s not true in a lot of places. I think our guys are having a blast. To be able to see the history of the campus and talk about it and visit different places, to visit the chapel and see the Hudson River, where General Washington had the chains across, this place is magnificent. For us to be able to enjoy this and enjoy this day with Army is really special.” -- Yankees Manager Joe Girardi
