Did You Know?
• More Than One Third Of U.S. Adults Are Obese • Obesity Related Conditions Include Heart Disease, Stroke, Type 2 Diabetes And Certain Types Of Cancer • Non-Hispanic Blacks Have The Highest Age-Adjusted Rates Of Obesity (48.5%) • Obesity Is Linked To More Than 60 Chronic Diseases OBESE people pay in just as much money to Social Security as non-obese, but are much more likely to never get to use the retirement benefit. Why? Average obese person dies 10 years earlier than the non-obese person.
How Do You Measure Up?
Body Mass Index (BMI) -A measure of your body fat based on height compared to your weight-For example if you are 5 foot six inches and 220 pounds your BMI is 35. A person with diabetes and BMI of 35 qualifies for weight loss surgery. Laparoscopic Sleeve gastrectomy is an innovative approach to the management of obesity. During a Sleeve Gastrectomy, 2/3 of the patient’s stomach is removed to decrease the amount of food they can intake at one time. It is also believed that less of the hormone Gherlin is produced which is the hormone responsible for our “hunger drive.” All patients undergo a rigorous pre-surgical workup which includes nutrition and exercise counseling along with various medical evaluations, to ensure the best outcome for patients. It is covered by most insurance companies, and has rapidly become the number one surgical weight loss procedure done in the United States. Patients with a Body Mass index over 35 may be considered for weight loss surgery (see chart).

publisher’snote Dear Readers
Hard to believe that another year has come and gone, and that we are now beginning 2017. Each year I always tell myself that this is going to be the best year yet, and 2016 was a very good year for my family and for my business. Each morning I awake and thank God for my wonderful blessed life that I am allowed to have, because whether you believe in God or not, you have to admit that if you have your health, and you have a good life, you are blessed. It has been almost a year since I have been publishing and promoting the Kent County Women’s Journal again, and I am so pleased with the results. To all of our wonderful contributors, thank you for your time and energy that you put into the great articles you provide. You are what makes this paper possible for the Kent County community. Our profiles this issue, have been dedicated to Heart Awareness Month, please enjoy reading them on pages 25-28. We have seven incredible women whose lives have been touched by heart disease in some way. Having lost five immediate family members to heart disease, this is my way of honoring them. I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday, and that you are ready to start your New Year off with a positive attitude. Whether you were happy with the outcome of the 2016 election or not, may we all pull together to take our country beyond the conflicts that we have seen over the last several months concerning politics. There is nothing that we can’t overcome in life, if we work hard enough. The Women’s Journal is distributed free of charge, sponsored by our contributors, and is available in medical buildings, hospitals, doctors’ offices, recreation centers, libraries, bookstores, coffee shops, hair salons, supermarkets, and many other local businesses. Can’t put your hands on a copy? Just call us so we can help! - Pamela Rizzo, Publisher

Resolve To Be A Life Changer! The gift of life that you give will help sustain someone else’s life. It could be a friend, a family member or in most cases a complete stranger. But does it really matter who it saves? Isn’t life the most precious commodity we have?
By Michael Waite, Director, Marketing & Community Relations
W
hether we openly admit it or not, the start of a new year causes us to reflect on where we are in our lives. Do we have a desire to be a better person, lose weight, become more active or save more lives? That’s right . . . at this moment you can make a resolution to save lives by making an appointment to donate blood at Blood Bank of Delmarva, just like John did. Ten years ago, John had a triple coronary artery bypass & needed 8 pints of blood and 4 units of platelets. That day 12 people saved his life. Twelve people who didn’t know him and he didn’t know them. Twelve people who took time out of their busy lives to save someone else, someone they didn’t know and would probably never meet. John himself had donated blood in the past, but not on a regularly scheduled basis. But after his life altering incident, he made a resolution . . . a resolution to give back to those who unselfishly had done the same for him. Over a 10 year span, John has become one of our most frequent donors and has donated over 240 times, which means he’s been at BBD 24 times per year over the last ten years! That’s consistency and dedication. By the way, platelets are his preferred form of donation. There is very little else you can do in your life that’s more gratifying and more impactful than donating blood because it’s a gift that will directly affect the life of a patient at one of the hospitals Blood Bank of Delmarva serves in our region.
questions on our website at www. DelmarvaBlood.org. You’ll also find helpful information on good practices you should use to make your donation go more easily. Or you can simply pick up the phone and call us with any questions or concerns you may have.
In my conversations and travels throughout the Delmarva region, the talk always turns to “Why should I give”? Here’s why: 65% of the United States population cannot donate blood for a number of different reasons. Many take medications that prevent them from donation; others have or had illnesses that make them ineligible, many are deferred because of travel and there are a significant number who don’t meet the physical requirements to donate. All these restrictions are there for one purpose, the absolute safety of the blood supply in our country.
Our donors are everyday heroes . . . doing what they can on a daily basis to help save lives. It’s important work, it’s lifesaving work and we’d like you to join us. Again, the time you spend in a donor chair will make a world of difference in the life of someone you may never meet, but as our friend John will tell you, he’s here today because 12 people over 10 years ago chose to make a difference. To schedule your appointment, please go online to DelmarvaBlood. org or call 888 8-BLOOD-8.
Of the 35% or so who have the ability to donate, only 4-5% actually do. That’s a tremendous burden on a very small segment of our population. It’s also a burden on blood centers throughout the United States as we struggle continuously to recruit new donors. Many of the people who donate regularly are aging and due to physical ailments may not be able to donate much longer. As an industry, we must find healthy new donors who will take up the challenge of helping to save lives, which is why we constantly encourage people who have never donated in the past to join us.
We love our donors for saving local lives! Schedule your appointment at www.DelmarvaBlood.org or call 1 888 8-BLOOD-8
Blood Bank
The process of blood donation doesn’t take a lot of time. For whole blood, the actual donation time is less than 15 minutes. The entire process from the time you walk into one of our donor centers until the time you walk out takes about an hour because of the questionnaire that everyone must answer before every donation, along with a quick check on your blood pressure, temperature and hemoglobin levels. All these steps are FDA mandated for the safety of the blood supply and for the safety of the donor.

Help For Loss & Grief A
s a community partner in end-of-life, Delaware Hospice wants to reach out to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. While grief is very personal, there are many common experiences that accompany the death of a loved one. Delaware Hospice offers an opportunity to support those who are grieving by breaking the isolation. Grief should not be a taboo subject. Don’t hesitate to reach out to someone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. They are aching for you to tell them its okay to grieve and share in their journey.
Here are 6 helpful tips you may find helpful when trying to deal with loss and grief:
Grandma’s Laugh
1.
Give yourself the time to let grief run its course. The grieving process is personal to you and thus should go at your own speed. There isn’t a deadline set to feel a certain way. Remember, grief is not a one-time event, but a process and goes through cycles. Don’t put yourself on a timetable to be finished grieving. In reality, the grieving process may not end, but it will get easier over time.
2.
Seek help outside of family and friends. Grief can feel very lonely, even when you have loved ones around. Often sharing your sorrow with others who have experienced similar losses, who are not your family, can help.
3.
Continue to have a support system. Keep friends and family close, spending some time alone is fine, but long periods of isolation may not be. Allow loved ones and friends to share in your sorrow or simply be there when you cry.
4.
Keep your life moving. There is comfort in routine, activities with friends and every day life. Do as much of this as you feel comfortable doing. When you are ready, consider trying a new activity. It can be a positive step forward in this new chapter in your life. You may also want to consider attending social events. If you feel like leaving early, you don’t have to give a reason. Do what feels right for you and others will understand.
5.
Allow yourself to be happy and let humor into your world. It’s okay to allow yourself to enjoy moments of happiness. Don’t feel like you need to be sad all of the time. You can allow moments of happiness and even laughter and still grieve your loved one. Laughter truly can be helpful in the healing process and is a healing and healthy release.
We may not be nationally recognized for laughs with Grandma, but Rose thinks we are. We’re the best at keeping Grandmas from going back to the hospital,* so she can be at home to give out hugs. When coping with serious illness we can help reduce symptoms and stress to make every day about living more fully.
6.
We can even prevent trips to the hospital that can mean more tests and more stress. We’re there 24-7 when you need us. So with our help, Grandma can be at home to give out the hugs.
No matter where you are in your grief journey, it is also important to know you are not alone. Delaware Hospice has both adult and children bereavement counselors available throughout the state. We’re here to help individuals and families navigate through grief in a way that is focused on coping and healing.
Call us for a quality of care that improves the quality of living at (800) 838-9800.
Realize that what you may see as a “setback,” is natural and is okay. Grief is a journey. Even when you may feel you have begun to heal and re-engage in life, there will be times when your loss still hits you hard. Holidays, birthdays, or special dates can be difficult. Seeing a photo of your loved one, hearing stories about them, or visiting a place that was special to them can trigger grief to resurface. Don’t be too hard on yourself when this happens, or let these emotions frustrate you. It’s natural to still have grief resurface in these situations. Being compassionate with yourself is important.
Delaware Hospice also offers a variety of workshops and meetings to our families and community as space permits free of charge. As a trusted community partner in end of life education and support, Delaware Hospice strives to provide quality healthcare services to our community. Dr. Steckel customizes each plan, and gives regular progress updates to patients, parents and their GP’s. Everybody wants a Red Carpet smile!
According to the research studies in “Evidence-Based Orthodontics,”* some malocclusions or “bad bites” are best treated early (ages 7-9 yrs) and some are best treated later (ages 11-13 yrs). Oral habits such as thumbsucking are best stopped early before they permanently alter the teeth position, and a habitguard appliance can help. Retainers are important to maintain the results after treatment. At OSL, Dr. Steckel customizes your retainers to your longterm needs. Studies show that patients are most satisfied with overjet/overbite improvements, straighter teeth, comfortable appliances, and appointments that fit their schedule.

SENIOR CARE NOTES:
Do You Know Where Your Loved One Is?
Presented by Ron Miller
W
andering poses one of the greatest safety risks for a senior with Alzheimer’s disease. There are over 5.5 million people in the United States with the disease and more than 60 percent of those affected will wander at some point through the progression of the disease. It’s a problem that will continue to grow. Unless a cure is found, an estimated 16 million people will suffer from Alzheimer’s by the year 2050. If the ratio continues nearly 10 million people may potentially experience wandering. This is a major problem that confronts the entire world. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, some of the signs that indicate that a person may wander are the following;
•
Asks about current or past friends and family
•
Acts as if doing a hobby or chore but nothing gets done
•
Appears lost in a new or changed environment
This seemingly pointless activity usually does have a reason. It is basically an attempt to communicate after language skills have been lost.
Returns home from a regular walk or drive later than usual
•
Install locks in doors, windows and gates
•
Attempts to fulfill former obligations such as going to work
•
Add a hidden bolt lock higher or lower than the line of sight
•
Wants to go home even tough they are already home; is restless, paces or makes repetitive movements
•
Paint doors the same color as walls to become less visible
Has difficulty locating familiar places like the bathroom, bedroom or dining room
•
•
•
Install alarms set off by monitor detectors and warning bells on doors
•
Post stop signs in restricted areas and putting a photo of the individual in his or her bedroom, as well as bathroom sign may help them navigate their home
Watch for patterns if wandering occurs at the same time every day, it may help to plan a closely supervised activity at that time. As Alzheimer’s disease advances the patient may become frail and predisposed to falls. For that reason, living spaces will be safer if throw rugs, electrical cords, and other potential trip hazards are removed. If a person exhibits the early signs of wandering, a number of steps need to be taken to ensure safety.
Although impossible to prevent wandering, there are steps that can be taken to minimize its occurrence.
•
•
The Alzheimer’s Association has a program called Medic Alert and Safe Return. It is designed to help identify people who wander and return them to their caregivers. For a $40 registration fee you receive an ID bracelet, labels for clothing , ID cards, registration in a national data base with emergency contact information and a 24 hour toll free number to report someone who is lost. You may register someone by calling 1-888-572-8566.
Hang curtains in windows that match color of walls Provide a fence around the property to still enable outside enjoyment

All-on-4 Dental Implants® Delaware Periodontics offers an alternative solution by employing the latest technologies to provide patients with the most predictable and comfortable surgical care. The All-on-4 Implant Protocol allows Dr. Klassman to remove all infections and replace a failing set of teeth with a fixed set of new teeth in just one surgical session. He is the only surgical specialist in the area that will complete the surgery and the temporary teeth in the same day.
By Dr. Bradford Klassman
V
ery few people are aware of how much they use their teeth on a daily basis. It is not until an individual begins to lose teeth and their oral health and quality of life declines that they begin to understand the impact of impaired oral function on their daily life. Patients with missing and/ or failing teeth suffer from malnutrition, reduced self esteem, and self confidence. They possess a high risk for developing oral conditions such as boney atrophy. Patients also suffer from periodontal disease, cavities, root canal infections, and serious bite problems called “Bite Collapse”. In addition to serious dental conditions, patients with severely failing dentitions can also be more at risk for serious medical conditions such as: cardiovascular problems, stroke and diabetes, complications if pregnant, with a high risk of preterm and low birth weight babies. There are several solutions for individuals with failing dentition. The typical sequence of therapy to address these complex dental conditions could require at least three surgeries. First, the teeth are extracted and the bone is allowed to heal. Patients will temporarily function in a traditional upper or lower denture, which at times impacts the patient’s diet choices. Next, the implants are placed and require a healing time of three to four months. A third surgery is done to expose the implants. The start to finish time is six to eight months. During this time, patients use removable dentures to function. www.TheWomensJournal.com
The All-on-4 Protocol uses only four dental implants to replace an entire arch of teeth. By angling the back implants, we can avoid nerves and sinus grafting which often requires much more aggressive surgical treatment. Not only does this technique replace an entire arch of teeth, but it allows Dr. Klassman to correct bite problems that were not correctable with other treatment options.
and predictable surgical care. He partners with top practices as co-therapists to strengthen and support comprehensive and esthetic oral health. Educated at Temple University School of Dentistry and Post Doctoral training in Periodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Brad is the youngest Board Certified Periodontist in the State of Delaware. He is also the first Periodontist in the State of Delaware to use Laser Periodontal Therapy and the LANAP protocol.
Patient’s lives are improved instantly by giving them immediate fixed teeth which improves eating, nutrition, psychological confidence, and removes all sources of infection. This occurs by connecting the new set of teeth to the implants, protecting the surgical site. Any post surgery discomfort is dramatically reduced. Patients can resume eating and activities right away.
Dr. Brad is proud to provide patients with Virtually Instant Dental Implants with a Same Day Smile. He teaches at the Christiana Care

Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder By Cindy Nigro Ph.D.
D
oes the following scenario sound familiar?
Everyone else in your family has gone to bed several hours ago, however, you are still wide awake watching TV or doing whatever chores you can find around the house. Finally, because you know you should go to bed, you attempt to do so. Nonetheless, you lie awake for another hour or more, staring at the clock, and counting the few hours that are left for you to sleep. When morning rolls around, you get up when everyone else does, because, of course, you have to. You have to go to work, or school, and begin your traditional day. You feel quite groggy for a while, eventually you adjust, but ultimately you feel sluggish until bedtime comes around again. What doesn’t quite make sense is that no matter how tired you may feel that evening, once again, you can’t get to sleep and the pattern continues throughout the week! Perhaps on weekends, you have a little more freedom. You still stay up late, but on Saturdays and Sundays, you sleep very late, often till noon or one o’clock. Others may describe you as lazy, or bemoan the fact that you’re wasting your day. You may even feel guilty about this, but you know you’re out of sync with everyone else, and don’t know why. I mean, in reality, you get less sleep than they do! If the above scenario sounds familiar, you may be suffering from what is called Delayed Sleep Phase Onset Disorder! You are what sleep professionals call an “Owl”. This sleep disorder is largely genetic, and affects at least 10% of the population, but there is good news. It can be treated!! www.TheWomensJournal.com
At the Insomnia Clinic at Delaware Sleep Disorders Centers, we have many patients who have presented with these same symptoms. Many have no idea why they are the way they are, and have never even considered the fact that they may be suffering from a legitimate disorder. Many of my patients find great relief in having a name put to their symptoms, and a reason to explain why they’re chronically late for work. It certainly is not because they are lazy, or irresponsible!
For those of you who think you may have such a Circadian Rhythm Disorder, there is much reason to be optimistic! Circadian Rhythm Disorders are often easily adjusted, and maintained. The treatment does require determination, and patience, but the success rate is quite high.
There is also a flip side to this, where individuals with Advanced Sleep Phase Disorder like to go to sleep early, but no matter what time they do, they always wake up early, usually earlier than everyone else. These people are called “Larks”. Both “Larks” and “Owls” fall into what are medically called Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders.
About the author: Cynthia Nigro, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist is now working at Delaware Sleep Disorder Centers after many years of being in private practice. She originally trained at the Center for Cognitive Therapy at the University of Pennsylvania, but after becoming fascinated

Melatonin is one of the most dominate hormones that regulates the part of the brain that determines sleep, and in the average person, it starts rising in the body at about eight or nine o’clock, and by six or seven o’clock the next morning, it has completely fallen. The rise of melatonin causes drowsiness, and the lack of it corresponds with wakefulness. Unfortunately, for those with a circadian rhythm disorder, their melatonin cycles occur either later or earlier. If left to their own devices though, they will have a perfectly normal night’s sleep, just at different times than most.
by the connection between the mind and the body, she began extensive training in all modalities of Biofeedback. Presently she combines these therapies to optimize treatment for those with sleep disorders. Delaware Sleep Disorder Centers, LLC, is staffed and equipped to evaluate and treat most sleep-related disorders. Diagnosis and treatment for many disorders may begin after just one night. When performing a sleep study, our technologists work closely with our medical director – (a physician who is board certified in Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine or Neurology) – to identify and confirm sleep disorders, measure their severity and recommend multiple treatment options.
Locations:
Melatonin is greatly affected by light, so by manipulating the amount and timing of light exposure, a person’s circadian rhythm can be nudged in one direction or the other. Aside from outdoor exposure, light devices are manufactured to simulate outdoor light, and are used to accomplish this. In addition, oral Melatonin tablets are sold over the counter, and with medical direction, can be taken to aide in initially resetting cycles. 11

Dizziness And Balance Problems T
he treatments for different causes of dizziness differ so dramatically from one another that a one-sizefits-all approach cannot work. The By Dr. Michael Teixido, MD best results come from identifying a specific diagnosis that result in specific and effective treatments for each patient. At ENT & Allergy of Delaware we strive to offer the highest level of care for patients with dizziness and balance problems. Evaluation requires a careful history, knowledge of the variable patterns of vertigo in known disorders, and a careful physical examination aided by testing of the balance system. The four most common diagnoses of patients with dizziness seen in our clinics are vestibular migraine, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, vestibular neuronitis, and Ménière’s disease. About half of the patients we see with dizziness have symptoms caused by the same mechanism that causes migraine headaches. Migraines have many symptoms other than headaches, and the cardinal symptom of a migraine headache is sometimes completely missing. The dizziness of Vestibular Migraine has the same food, environmental and physiologic triggers as migraine headaches. Stress, hormones, weather changes and foods are commonly identified as triggers in our patients. Fortunately, once recognized, routine migraine therapies are successful in controlling symptoms. Another common cause of dizziness is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). In BPPV calcium crystals present in our inner ears to sense the direction of gravity come loose and find their way into the semi-circular canals. When changing head and body position the crystals fall through the canals and cause a sensation of spinning for up to 40 seconds until they reach the lowest position. People who get dizzy from lying down or rolling over in bed very likely have BPPV. This condition is more common in the elderly and is a dangerous cause of falls. Once detected the challenge is to identify which ear and which canals have crystals in them and to perform maneuvers or prescribe exercises that will be effective in either dissolving the crystals or moving them back to an area in the inner ear where they will not cause symptoms. Some patients with balance problems have an inner ear condition caused Ménière’s Disease. In Ménière’s Disease extra fluid accumulates in the delicate membranous labyrinth of the inner ear where all of the hair cells of hearing and balance reside. As the ear goes through cycles of accumulation of fluid and decompression through membrane ruptures, episodes of violent episodes of dizziness can occur and hearing, tinnitus and fullness in the ears can fluctuate. Unpredictable attacks of violent spinning with nausea and vomiting can last for more than an hour and wreak havoc on a patient’s life and, untreated, can continue for seven to twelve years so treatment to control vertigo is essential. Treatment starts with with medications, and if necessary injection of
steroids or other agents into the ear. Some patients benefit from surgery to drain excess fluid in the delicate inner ear. Another common cause of balance problems is Vestibular Neuronitis. Vestibular Neuronitis causes the longest lasting severe vertigo attacks of any vestibular disorder. Out of nowhere comes a severe vertigo attack with nausea and vomiting that lasts an entire day and often sends the patient to the emergency room for help. Vestibular Neuronitis is caused by a virus which paralyzes all of the nerve endings from one inner ear. Fortunately the attack occurs only one time but it takes up to six weeks to recover. The affected inner ear may be weakened forever and the process of adaptation to the imbalance between the inner ears can be helped with special exercises. At ENT & Allergy of Delaware our diagnostic efforts are aided by a state-of-the-art balance laboratory in which we can measure the strength of the balance organs in one ear compared to the other. Other tests sensitive to specific conditions
are also performed. This helps us narrow down the diagnostic possibilities in cases where the history and initial physical exam are inconclusive. While testing does not always give an exact diagnosis, it gives additional information that the doctor can consider in the context of the history and physical examination and can be essential to finding a correct diagnosis. We can then be sure that our treatment efforts are being put in the right place. Dr. Teixido is a Delaware native and practices at ENT & Allergy of Delaware. He is Delaware’s only Neurotologist (neurology and neurosurgery of ear disorders). He is director of the Delaware Otologic Medicine and Surgery Fellowship training program. He teaches ear medicine and surgery regularly at Thomas Jefferson University and at the University of Pennsylvania where he is Assistant Professor, and at Drexel University, as well as nationally and internationally. Dr. Teixido founded the nonprofit: Association of Migraine Disorders to raise awareness and provide helpful resources to patients looking for solutions and to coordinate research efforts in the area of migraine disorders.

Questions And Answers With Dr. Jeff Minkovitz, Cataract And Refractive Specialist shape of the cornea, which may affect the refractive outcome of cataract surgery. Because most patients who have undergone LASIK are highly motivated to remain free from glasses, experience with LASIK is helpful in planning and performing these surgeries.
By Jeffrey B. Minkovitz, M.D.
Patients considering refractive or cataract surgery frequently ask me many questions about their eye condition and their options for treatment. Today, many more options exist, and asking the right questions helps to ensure the best fit. While each patient may have unique concerns, many questions surface repeatedly. In this article, I have tried to highlight some of the most common as well as some which apply more broadly.
Q
: How long do I need to be without my contact lenses before laser vision correction?
A
: Patients with soft contacts should refrain from wearing them for at least one week, and preferably two. Hard contacts require one month or more. Contact lens wear can alter the surface of the eye (the cornea), changing both the shape and clarity.
Q A
: Can patients with cataracts undergo laser vision correction?
Q
: Does laser vision correction cause cataracts or affect future cataract surgery?
: Patients with significant cataracts should not undergo laser vision correction. Laser vision correction is for the reduction of spectacle dependence. It does not improve vision diminished by cataracts. Furthermore, modern cataract surgery can often achieve the same goals of laser vision correction (reducing dependence upon glasses) while simultaneously improving best corrected vision (the principle goal of cataract surgery). Premium intraocular lens implants can also reduce dependence upon reading glasses.
A
: Laser vision correction does not cause cataracts, but can alter the
www.TheWomensJournal.com
Q A
: Will laser vision correction help me read without glasses?
: Laser vision correction is performed to reduce spectacle dependence for distance vision. In patients who are farsighted (see better far than near), there may be some near vision benefit, but patients in their mid-forties or older will typically need reading glasses to see close. One exception is monovision, in which one eye is corrected for distance and the other for near. Conductive keratoplasty (NearVision CK) is a procedure for improving reading vision in patients who do not need distance glasses
Q A
: Can cataract surgery reduce my need for glasses?
: The principle goal of cataract surgery is to restore clear vision in patients experiencing vision loss from cataracts. Advances in surgery, as well as attitudinal changes in patients and surgeons, have increased the emphasis on “enhanced vision” – improving visual performance beyond what may have been present even before cataracts developed. New technology has allowed better, safer surgery with speedier recovery. New implant designs have allowed reduction in “optical aberrations,” resulting in improved performance. Better measurements have allowed more predictable refractive outcomes (reducing nearsightedness and farsightedness). And premium intra-ocular lenses can reduce astigmatism and provide spectacle freedom for near and distance vision simultaneously. Please feel free to submit questions for future issues through The Women’s Journal, or visit my website at www.eyephysicians.com

Dr. Minkovitz participated in the early research on Excimer Laser refractive surgery, and has offered this procedure to Delawareans since FDA approval in 1996, before Delaware had its own laser. These early pioneering individuals travelled to Wilmer Institute with Dr. Minkovitz, where he maintained his teaching and clinical appointment. In addition to introducing laser vision correction to Delaware, he also introduced NearVision CK to eliminate reading glasses, DSAEK (a newer, less invasive type of corneal transplant) and recently the newest advance in cataract
surgery: laser assisted cataract surgery. In 2016, Dr. Minkovitz founded Laser Vision Delaware, llc and brought the newest and most advanced refractive laser to Delaware. Dr. Minkovitz is a co-founder of the Center for Advanced Surgical Arts and serves on its medical advisory board. He is also on active staff at Christiana Care. While on staff of Wilmer at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Minkovitz received the Outstanding Teacher award. Let Us Give You Something To Smile About! Holistic dentists look at the whole body when treating patients. Similar to chiropractic philosophy, they understand that an injury to one part of the body can affect the whole system. Put another way, holistic dentistry addresses the patient’s immediate dental problems while also taking a longer-term approach to patient health. For instance, many treatments for oral conditions and diseases include toxic elements, including amalgam. Commonly used in fillings, amalgam contains more than 50% mercury, a heavy metal that can damage the central nervous and immune systems. That’s why Dr. Grace and her husband don’t use amalgam fillings. By Dr. Grace Liu

he Smile Place. Although The Smile Place at 17 N. Main Street, Smyrna may sound like a baby-sitting business or even a game arcade, the year-old dental practice is truly geared to children. Visitors are immediately greeted by wallpaper festooned with cartoon characters and a counter with stuffed animals eyeing you up or hanging from the ceiling. The waiting area features a warm leather couch and chairs around a TV that plays nothing but cartoons. Nor is the staff above wearing pointy cat ear headbands. It’s a place created to put children and parents at ease. If you come in between patients, you may even meet practice owner Dr. Grace Liu wearing a small ‘diamond’ tiara aligned with the office theme. Dr. Grace, as she prefers to be called, takes an active role communicating with children and families.
When at a patient’s request they remove fillings that contain mercury, they use drills with small vacuums to capture the fine dust and also wear masks to prevent inhaling it. Mercury can stay in the body for up to a year. Gum cleanings are also essential to good oral health and holistic dentists often use natural antibacterial agents to minimize this risk. Many holistic dentists like Dr. Grace and her husband also avoid using fluoride because they believe it does not prevent tooth decay
and poses long-term health problems to bones. Fluoride is banned in many European countries because of suspected cancer links. To educate the public about the risks of commonly used products and chemicals, the Holistic Dental Association was formed in 1978. New patients are accepted through a written and interview process that includes providing information about oral and general health that enables the doctors to review and recommend the best immediate and long-term care for them and their family members.

Before school started in August a dozen staff members handed out 200 brightly colored “smile bags,” with school supplies to patients and neighborhood kids. “It was a wonderful way to reach out to our community,” said Dr. Grace who, with another dentist, treats as many as 60 children daily in a steadily growing practice. Many are from low-income families but all receive the same level of care and caring, according to practice manager Lynette Carey, a friend of Dr. Grace, whom she persuaded to come aboard when she opened the practice in September 2015. In addition to traditional treatment methodologies, Dr. Grace and her husband Dr. Lewis Yu, practice holistic dentistry, two of a handful of Delaware dentists who do. As the name implies, holistic dentists take into account a person’s entire state of physical and emotional health. They use natural therapies to diagnose and treat diseases of the oral cavity.

What You Need To Know About Stem Cells
By Dr. Brian Shiple
T
he term “stem cells” is a phrase that is often mentioned when discussing alternative treatments for orthopedic injuries and many other medical conditions. However, many people do not fully understand what stem cells are, where they come from, and how they can be used. Another common source of confusion is that there are several different kinds of stem cells that are used to treat musculoskeletal issues. The three different kinds of stem cells we will discuss in the upcoming articles are adult autologous stem cells from bone marrow and fat, non-autologous placental products, and embryonic stem cells. Adult autologous (from your own body) stem cells are the most common type being used in orthopedic cases today. The specific types of adult stem cell that are being used to treat musculoskeletal conditions are called mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), pericytes, and hematopoetic stem cells (HSCs). These are multipotent, meaning they are able to differentiate into different types of tissue and can regenerate bone, blood, cartilage, tendon, muscle, ligament, intervertebral discs, and fat www.TheWomensJournal.com
cells. This type of stem cell is ideal in the treatment of advanced arthritis, cartilage, muscle, tendon, ligament, and disc injuries. It is being used with very good evidence to treat early avascular necrosis (AVN), a condition resulting in bone death from lack of blood supply to the bone. Physicians may choose a bone marrow source of stem cells to treat their patient’s musculoskeletal condition. We have mastered the ability to obtain the bone marrow cells very comfortably with the use of nerve blocks and local anesthesia. The bone marrow is then processed in our lab, concentrated, and counted to make sure an optimal amount is obtained for treatment to assure a good prognosis and outcome. In case our patients have a less than ideal cell count, we have the option to add another cell source to their case to help ensure their treatment will be as effective as possible. A patient’s bone marrow concentrate is injected into their area of treatment using expert guidance with high resolution ultrasound and/ or fluoroscopic guidance as soon as possible after the cells are processed. This is done the same day as the bone marrow aspiration due to the fact that the longer a stem cell is outside of the body, the less effective the healing capacity becomes and the FDA and state regulations do not allow a stem cell to be stored for later use in the United States. With the extensive recovery time, risks, complications, copays, deductibles, and out of pocket expenses that come with surgery, adult bone marrow stem cell injections are a less risky, and often cost effective alternative to a joint replacement or other musculoskeletal surgical repair. Our patients seek us out because we offer
progressive treatments to help them regain their mobility and function without surgery! Visit www.drshiple.com for more information and see why doctors choose Dr. Shiple to perform their cellular medicine treatments as an alternative to surgery.

“Have you been told you need a knee replacement or are you living with extreme pain from arthritic joints? Before you have anything replaced or waste your time on conventional treatments please read my quick story. I am a retired pro bodybuilder and I had given up on living a normal life, let alone working out due to severe knee pain. I went the orthopedic route with no success and it was determined that my only option was a knee replacement. This is when I began to look for other options and came across The Center for Sports Medicine. After a thorough examination to include diagnostic ultrasound we decided that I was a candidate for stem cell therapy.
We proceeded with the stem cell treatment and after the recovery period I was able to resume training and live without constant knee pain for the first time in 12 years. Maintenance treatments were necessary every once in a while due to my intensity of training, but for these 4 years I was virtually pain free and training at a very high level. Nine months ago we did a second stem cell treatment and with only one week of rest I was able to return to my workout schedule. Since this treatment the knee is completely pain free and I have increased the intensity and volume of training very close to what it was when I was a competitive pro bodybuilder. I couldn’t be happier with the results and the care that I get at the clinic is the best in business! Over the last five years Dr. Shiple and his staff have performed numerous nonsurgical treatments all over my body to heal torn tendons, muscles, ligaments, headaches,
arthritic conditions in my neck and back, elbows, feet, wrists, and shoulders. The most important thing about what Dr. Shiple does is that his treatments greatly reduce the recovery time compared to surgery. I can truly say that without this avenue of treatments I would not be living a healthy, active lifestyle that is very important for my happiness.” Frank Rhea

What Are You Waiting For? “Whether you think you can or think you can’t – you are right.” ~ Henry Ford
By Heather Diamond, 200 e-ryt, LMT Founder, VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga
“Yoga is about clearing away whatever is in us that prevents our living in the most full and whole way. With yoga, we become aware of how and where we are restricted — in body, mind, and heart — and how gradually to open and release these blockages.
A
erial Yoga looks intimidating & complicated to most people. The most common reason that someone does not try this new style of yoga is that they think they cannot do it, or they are not ready for it just yet. They want to get stronger or more flexible first. Take the time to dive in and you will find that VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga is one of the best ways to find a connection with your body, to build strength and flexibility, and to create space and movement in the body. Once students get started with VaihAyasa, they usually find that it is not so intimidating at all: in fact they tend to find it fun, relaxing, and oh so yummy! Vaihayasa Aerial Yoga allows practitioners to sink into their practice more quickly, to deepen stretches, to find proper alignment naturally, and to reap the benefits of inversions without strain on the joints of the body. You will find that your mind clears, shifting to become open, aware, present. You don’t have to be young or flexible to do Aerial Yoga. One of the things I love most about teaching VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga is the quick progress that can be seen in students alignment, strength, & flexibility. For instance, Reverse Namaste (or prayer hands behind your back), is a pose that no matter how many times I tried in my regular practice, I was not able to get fully into. The support of the fabric and the space created in my shoulders from my aerial practice helped me fully into this mudra (even without the fabric) within 5 times of practicing it. www.TheWomensJournal.com
Publisher ’s Note:
Another reason I enjoy Aerial Yoga is that no matter what physical limitations a student may enter the room with (sciatica issues, shoulder strain, broken wrist), there are always adaptations that can be made to allow the student to create movement and space in the body. The ability to surrender into postures makes it the perfect way to create more flexibility naturally, and gives the practitioner a chance to feel support where the body needs it.
Why Should You Try VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga? •
decompress the neck & spine
•
proper alignment naturally, gravity assisted
•
less pressure on hands, neck & shoulders
•
allows gravity to deepen stretches (relax into holdings)
•
enhance, deepen, & advance your floor practice
•
achieve more advanced postures while being supported
•
experience the benefits of inversions without risk of injury to neck or spine
•
gain a new perspective on the body’s alignment & movement
•
move more fluidly
•

As these blockages are cleared, our energy is freed. We start to feel more harmonious, more at one with ourselves. Our lives begin to flow — or we begin to flow more in our lives.” ~ Cybele Tomlinson
“When I first thought about taking Aerial Yoga I was assuming that it would be hard, and that there was no way that I could do any of it (I am almost 60 yrs. old). I also assumed that I had to be really strong and limber. I was totally wrong: From the very beginning it was fun, enjoyable, & allowed me to go in to yoga poses that I never had been able to do in regular floor yoga. As the old saying goes… ‘Try It, You’ll Like It’ … I promise.” ~ PJ, Lewes, DE

Calling All Men . . . To Pilates! more for women. It is one of the fastest growing fitness trends in the world, and men are definitely taking advantage of the many benefits of Pilates.
By Nancy Hawkins Rigg Founder and Owner, Forever Fit Foundation
P
ilates may be one of the most misunderstood exercise forms. Without the benefit of thousands of years of history like Yoga, or a straightforward purpose like running, Pilates leaves many people curious. This may be why men tend to shy away from alternative forms of exercise that they are unsure of. Is Pilates useful for men? Pilates was started by a man, Joseph Pilates, for men. He was a boxer and fitness enthusiast. Pilates has been a training vehicle for elite athletes, both men and women, for over 50 years. Men have been prominent figures as instructors, educators, and promoters of this exercise method throughout its history. Though men have always played a large role in the Pilates practice, the surge of popularity of the practice has been powered largely by a wave of women participants and educators, leaving some with the impression that Pilates is
What is “the true Pilates experience”? A good session will massage your entire body from the inside out. You should feel refreshed and invigorated at the end. Every move you make will become constructive exercise, whether getting in and out of your car, walking across the room or reaching a top shelf, because you are using your body correctly. You will feel better, look better and sleep better. Joseph’s goal was not that you spend hours in the gym every week, but that you train your body to function correctly, get the juices flowing in the proper direction, breathe and live a healthy life.
5 REASONS MEN SHOULD DO PILATES: Develop often neglected muscle groups Men tend to focus on larger and mainly upper body muscles. Pilates reaches the intrinsic or smaller muscles that are vital for support. Joseph himself choreographed exercises that suited his body type and had to remind himself to strive for balance in the body.
Improve flexibility
The focus on stretching helps prevent injury, muscle strain and imbalance. This focus increases
range of motion and muscular “fluidity.” Men tend to have tighter muscles, which hinders flexibility.
Core strength
By increasing core strength, it powers movement from the center of the body to the limbs.
Live more consciously
By paying attention to your body and your movement, you create new neural pathways. Men like to focus on the amount of weight being lifted. By isolating specific smaller muscle groups it maximizes the effect of the movement. Be present and in the moment. This will reduce your stress level.
Better sex
By increasing strength in the core and pelvic floor muscles, you will have greater control of that region.
3 TIPS FOR MEN WHO ARE NEW TO PILATES: Take classes. Come on in and start learning today. If you are already in a class, ask the instructor if you can try something new in the practice.
There is nothing specifically different about Pilates training for men. The method is the same for all. Developed on a man’s body and taught with input from both men and women, Pilates is founded on healthy movement principles for the human body in general. Men might find that they are a little tighter in the hips
328 Kennett Pike (Rt 52) Chadds Ford, PA 302-423-1816
Finally, Pilates is a mind/body practice that goes beyond the superficial muscles and requires more subtle attention and microadjustments than some men are used to finding in a traditional exercise class. There is no “just power through” attitude that men might be used to in gyms. When working with the Pilates equipment, the resistance is not intended to be overpowered. Sometimes the lightest setting on the reformer is the most challenging for core muscles. Thoughtful movement is the key to a deeper level of fitness. “The Pilates training at Forever Fit Foundation is outstanding. They have state of the art Pilates Reformers, Barrels, Cadillacs, etc. The trainers are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, empathetic, demanding, and effective. We look forward to our weekly sessions. We believe it is an investment in our well-being.” - Neal and Jane Mayer, Millsboro DE

Lady Lifters; More Than A Gym – It’s A Life Changing Journey To A New You! program that includes a minimum of one set (8-12 reps) of 8-10 exercises that condition major muscle groups at least two days a week.

L

Find us on Facebook or www.ladyliftersgym.com.
Weight Training And The Benefits Weight training has a huge misconception that if you’re a woman it will make you look like a man; however it will only make you look that way if you were taking steroids or testosterone boosters. For most women who weight train they end up with a sexy and curvy figure. Weight training also offers a lot of health benefits for almost any type of medical condition it also helps with depression and physical injuries. The fact is, weight training can and will change your life. Weight training can help prevent and even reverse many diseases including bad cholesterol & blood pressure. You will get a better night’s sleep and even burn more calories while you sleep. Weight training boosts mood by increasing endorphins, dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin which will help with depression and PTSD. In many studies it prevents and can reverse bone and muscles loss as you age, naturally. Weight training can balance glucose levels for people with diabetes, healthy diet can prevent insulin spikes. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends a strength training www.TheWomensJournal.com
Everyone WILL get older and the old saying “if you don’t use it you lose it” is so true when it comes to your muscles. There are nursing homes across the nation that prove that once you reach a certain age your body will not take care of you if you did not take care of it. No one wants to end up in a nursing home depending on a stranger to take care of you, waiting on your loved ones to come visit you. If you look at the population in the nursing home, you will find more women than men because women spend their lives taking care of everyone else. Like they tell you on the airplane, put YOUR mask on first, take care of yourself starting today. Don’t wait until it’s too late, it’s time to start taking care of yourself. If you start weight training now, you CAN prevent this from happening and be the active older crowd that you envy as you see them in the gyms or jogging down the street. Late 2013, I had a health scare; I ended up in the emergency room thinking I was having a heart attack. After several tests the doctor told me that I had inflammation around my heart, I was obese. I researched causes of inflammation and found that it had a lot to do with the foods we eat so I started my New Year’s resolution on Jan 1st, 2014 to start “eating clean”. I started seeing immediate weight loss and an unexpected turn around in my health. I had more energy and decided to join a gym in July 2014, I lost 80lbs by the end of the year but wasn’t happy with the sagging skin. I quickly turned to weight training and by the following year I was amazed at my results!! I lost a total of 100lbs, looked younger and felt stronger than ever. People came to me for advice and many suggested that I become a trainer since I had such a passion for health and fitness. Towards the
end of 2015, Lady Lifters was a vision I had and by 2016 step by step it came to be a reality. My passion is to help others find their true potential, to change their lives the way I changed mine. Testimonies
“I joined Lady Lifters to lose weight and get toned up, but have noticed one more (unexpected) change. I have been a chronic pain sufferer now for about eight years, but have seen a notable difference in my stiffness issues since starting a few weeks ago. I looked for an excuse not to keep going after the first class but quickly realized that the little muscle soreness I was having is nothing compared to the benefits of building muscle! I no longer dread putting my feet on the floor in the morning there is no more wincing from pain.” ~ Sharon Ritter Geyer

“I have been wanting to get back in the gym for a while now but I have always been intimidated by equipment I don’t know how to use, not knowing what to do while I am there and the typical gym population. Not here. Everyone is so nice and encouraging and I feel like I have a personal trainer. And you can’t beat the price anywhere!” ~ Tara Metheny Wilbur

Lose Unwanted Pounds A
fter the excitement of the Holidays has passed, many of us are left with a few extra pounds; both on the scale and on our monthly credit card statement. One of the easiest ways to lose the weight of high payments and extra debt is to CONSOLIDATE.
As a financial cooperative, we are local people, making local decisions who are in business for the benefit of our members. Members are a top priority and every decision that’s made is based on the positive impact it can have on a member’s financial life.
Debt consolidation, can be an easy and affordable way to pay off debt sooner and keep more money in your pocket. From refinancing a car to consolidating credit cards into one monthly payment, it’s possible to save hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the life of your loan. As our member’s needs and expectations of service change, we adapt our business model to meet their needs. While traditional offices still exist and will continue to expand in locality, we realize that it’s important to also provide and adapt to improvements in technology which provide account access anytime from anywhere. Examples of how this has changed in the financial industry include the implementation of online and mobile account access, as well as mobile check capture, which allows a consumer to take a photo of a check and upload it to their account to make a deposit. Additionally, we have partnered to provide surcharge free ATM access to more than 80,000 ATMs nationwide. Providing additional channels of convenience.

WHY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A VIRTUAL OFFICE? by Lori L. Davis
© 2016 SHANNON ADELSON PHOTO
One of the many challenges a business owner faces is finding an office environment that fits their business needs as well as their budget. A virtual office provides an opportunity for business owners to conduct business in a professional manner and can also provide a great impression while networking.

A virtual office can offer all the benefits of an office address as well as business communication without requiring the client to set up an actual office space.

business owner can have an address at 1 .well-known facilities without having to lease an officethespace within the building. This provides a huge cost savings versus the cost of an actual on premise office. Mailing Services- the virtual office allows for the delivery of business mail and parcels which then are 2 .arranged to be sent to the client. One does not have to be there to receive certified mail, or sign for parcels as the service provides that option. Services- using a live receptionist, telephone answering services and voicemail allow 3.Communication for the busy entrepreneur to still take calls even when they are unavailable. You don’t ever want to miss a sales call so communication is paramount for any business owner. Most virtual offices have a dedicated email address and fax number to provide addition avenues for the dissemination of pertinent information. Space- meeting rooms, day offices and temporary desks may also be available. These options 4.Office can allow for a temporary physical presence as to provide additional professional presence when warranted. Amenities like video conferencing, lounges, kitchens, wireless capability and internet connectivity are benefits that can be used without bearing the monthly cost. Savings- because the business owner is not leasing an actual 4 walled office, the cost savings 5 .Cost becomes quite significant. The money saved can be used to fund other projects and business investments. Compared to simply using a PO Box, a business address at a prestigious building allows the virtual office client to maintain a professional image at a relatively low price point.
“ The use of Virtual Office Space is the wave of the future. It can provide several benefits and should be looked upon as a viable option to help any business Grow, Develop and Thrive.”

I love the flexibility that STAT International offers me and my clients … whether it is a meeting space for 15 people with the most current technical functionality required for today’s business meetings or the ability to accommodate any of my client’s needs. The staff at STAT is friendly and supportive of all my business requirements. - David R. Batman, Esquire Law Office of David R. Batman In April of 2013, 3E Marketing Solutions was a growing home-based business. One Friday afternoon a fellow business owner contacted us about a possible office share opportunity in downtown Wilmington. We arranged to see the office that afternoon. Once there, the STAT International team, customer service attitude, array of service options and location made an unexpected opportunity a “must have.” Although the space was too small for our businesses to share, 3E committed and moved into a small temporary office but in weeks moved into our suite on the 9th floor in early May. In December of 2015 we moved again, into our lovely, newly renovated suite of offices on the 10th floor! Moving to downtown Wilmington and becoming part of the STAT International community as been an incredible game changer for 3E Marketing Solutions. Boost Your Career
With Professional Development Courses Y
ou may have decided you need to add a credential to your resume, or you might be thinking that a college degree could boost your career. The research would back you up. Statistics show that earnings consistently increase with level of education. On average, workers over 25 years old with bachelor’s degrees earn an astonishing 70% more than their counterparts with high school diplomas. In addition, people are turning to certificate programs to boost their earnings, add new credentials to their resumes and improve their career prospects. Professional development programs and courses also provide an excellent way to retool for a job change. “Certificates are a homegrown American invention and are expanding rapidly in response to a wide range of educational and labor market demands,” reported researchers at Georgetown University. A major finding of their study is that the postsecondary certificate has become a cost-effective tool for increasing educational attainment and gainful employment in the U.S. If it’s been awhile since you were in school, you may be wondering if college is still right www.TheWomensJournal.com
for you. Some prospective returning students feel unsure whether they could be successful in college-level coursework after being away from a classroom environment for a period of time. But once they’ve started, students report finding a renewed commitment for success. “In college this time around, I’m focused,” said one student. “I found that my studying techniques and time management skills were much improved from when I was a younger student,” reported another. Most colleges and universities have a continuing education department that will help returning students choose a program that fits their educational goals and help guide them through enrollment processes. For those considering a return to college, whether for a degree, certificate program or other course, the University of Delaware’s ACCESS Center provides free academic advisement to help identify career and educational goals, develop educational plans, implement decisions and build learning skills. 23

“Shasta Shutterbug” .
...a ..a must have at your next event! By Mike Baker
“Shasta Shutterbug” camper photo booth was an idea I saw online from California and Florida. My niece had sent a couple of pictures to me, and I started to research. It’s also something popular in Europe. Most of those are from the back of a VW bus or a similar vehicle. I initially saw this 1969 Shasta Compact Camper for sale about a year ago alongside a local road. Not knowing what I could do with it, I somewhat shelved the thought of buying it. After I had seen these ideas online, I knew I needed that “Shasta”. I was sure it was gone eight months later. I took a 15-minute drive where I saw it previously. There it was still sitting there waiting for me. I immediately jumped on the idea. I purchased the camper and started looking at different ones all over the US. There are not many out there, but I think it will grow. I never realized how big photo booths are. I shoot many weddings throughout the year and starting noticing the appeal. I figured photo booths would be more of a short-term fad and dwindle away. Not true! They are getting more and more popular. So this was my winter project! Not having any idea what to do, I had my daughter, Courtney, do the designing as I did the engineering and labor. My 21-year-old daughter knew what was “in” more than I did. She was attending UD while I worked on it and came home to check on it (and my work). I was blessed with a relatively warm fall and winter. I gutted it. You never know what’s underneath until you start pulling it apart. I replaced some rotten walls and rotten floors from 47 years of weathering. Put new ceiling and wall coverings with a hardwood floor. It is decked out with a stereo system inside and outside. The photo booth is built to fit in the area that is left. Since the start of the “Shasta”, we have been enlightened with the endless possibilities for what and where we can be involved. We started this near the end of April and have been busy almost every weekend. These are just a few places where we have been: • Dover International Speedway • Southern Delaware Heart Ball Gala • Grand openings for new businesses • Arena’s 5K Goat Run • Numerous birthday celebrations • Maple Dale Country Club wedding • Harvest Ridge Winery Wedding • Pizzadili’s Vineyard wedding • A barn wedding in Lewes • Peninsula Oil Company Pic’n • I G Burtons 2 Chamber Mixer (CCGM and CDCC) • Dover’s Capital holiday celebration • Dover Federal Credit Union’s facilities at Dover and Dover Air Force Base • Milford’s 2016 River Walk Freedom Festival • …Just to name a few For advertising purposes a corporate or company logo and/or text can be printed however the client wishes. These pictures always hang around and the company info is right there with it. Endless possibilities ! We are booking many weddings for 2017 and are very excited with the incoming year of 2017. Prices can be obtained by contacting us on our website at www.cmbaker.com. Call us with any questions you may have. We cover all of Delaware and parts of neighboring states. 24

People Profile in
Cindy Dittman Price I was born with a congenital heart defect called tetralogy of fallot. I had a valve replacement at the age of 6 and open heart surgery for the remainder of repairs which include patching any hole/holes in the septum that separates the chambers to the left and right sides of the heart at age 15. In the time period when I had surgery it was very complex and I was told that my life expectancy was to age 35. I am now past that age by 20 plus years so I believe that I had the best cardiac doctors and surgeons ever from the University of Pennsylvania and Graduate hospitals in Philadelphia, PA. Before surgery I lived a sheltered life unable to do much including having home tutors for schooling. Breathing was difficult and I would turn blue from oxygen deprivation. After surgery I have lived a pretty normal life. I did all the things that normal teenagers do and carried this into adulthood. I have worked a full time job, raised children, and enjoyed life with my family and friends. I had a stroke at age 35 due to blood clots from the heart surgery, however I thankfully overcame that with little damage. Problems do arise, so continued medical care is a must. However, you take it one day at a time as any healthy person would do. My parents always made sure I was taken care of and had the best medical treatment available. I will never forget that. Though they have both passed on, I love them dearly for giving me life and support to be here for my children and grandchildren. I would tell anyone with heart defects/disease to live life to the fullest.
Elaine Bittner
From her early days as an environmental & chemical engineer in natural gas, Elaine Bittner’s performance set her on an upward trajectory through Chesapeake Utilities Corporation to her present role as Senior Vice President of Strategic Development. She also is President, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Strategy Officer for Aspire Energy; Chief Operating Officer for Sharp Energy, Peninsula Energy Services Company, and Xeron, and Chief Strategy Officer for all Chesapeake subsidiaries. As managing director of the transmission pipeline subsidiary, Eastern Shore Natural Gas (ESNG), and then as Vice President and business unit leader in 2005, she more than doubled transmission capacity, developing a strategy to expand the company’s natural gas pipeline & service territory. For these accomplishments, and many others, Ms. Bittner was promoted to VP of Strategic Development and then to her present position, where she is also responsible for Strategic Planning, Business Development, Project Management, Communications, and Human Resources. She also serves as Chair for several Chesapeake’s initiatives including Growth Council, Service Excellence Committee, Employee Benefits Committee, and Mentorship Program & Aspiring Scholars Program. Ms. Bittner’s leadership clearly has been integral to Chesapeake’s success, contributing to nine consecutive years of record earnings, placing the company in the top quartile among publicly traded energy companies. Ms. Bittner recently was named the 2016 Female Executive of the Year by the Stevie Awards, the world’s premiere business awards competition. Ms. Bittner shares her expertise and knowledge as a Board Member and Vice President of the Maryland-District of Columbia Utilities Association. In collaboration with other leaders, she promotes and identifies enhancements for the energy industry. And Ms. Bittner also is active in the community, serving as event chair for the Delaware American Heart Association’s annual Southern Delaware Go Red for Women Luncheon, leading record-breaking events for two consecutive years. Ms. Bittner is especially proud of her Go Red for Women team. “Being part of the Go Red for Women campaign is a remarkable experience,” said Ms. Bittner. “The power of women supporting one another is inspirational and I value the opportunity to connect with the community and colleagues.” As the leader responsible for the company’s brand management and engagement strategies, Ms. Bittner has “walked the talk” in extending the company’s Aspiring and Caring values to the employees, customers and communities it serves. www.TheWomensJournal.com

February 13, 2012, 10 days after last year’s Go Red for Women luncheon, I was admitted to Bayhealth Hospital for what I thought was a respiratory problem. I had a horrible cough for quite some time. No I was not avoiding seeing my doctor; unfortunately I was not seeing my Cardiologist. After returning home from my doctor’s appointment on February 13th, I could not breathe and was unable to talk so at 57 I had my first ambulance ride. By the time I reached the hospital I was feeling better and yes I thought I would be ok to go home. However, the emergency room doctors had different thoughts about me leaving. The Cardiologist on call was Dr. Vincent Abbrescia with Delaware Heart & Vascular. I am a patient of Dr. Judith Rippert. Dr. Abbrescia discussed my condition and the verdict was in, I was going to have triple Bypass Surgery. After being admitted I met with my surgeon Dr. Marelli who would perform my Surgery. Now while I was in the Heart Unit waiting for my surgery and after surgery, I have to tell you about the wonderful care I received from my nurses. They were remarkable! Fast forward to September 2012, I joined the wonderful team at Home Instead Senior Care as the Director of our charitable foundation, Be A Santa to a Senior. Last year we provided gifts to over 3,541 to our seniors in need thanks to my team at Home Instead and so many of my friends and our community. I am still employed at Home Instead Senior Care as the Community Liaison. As Community Liaison I travel from Middletown to southern Sussex County sharing the Home Instead message. I also have the opportunity to work with many charities including the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer’s Association. I have changed my lifestyle, I now walk daily, eat much healthier and avoid stress. In closing, I would like to thank my Doctors, nurses and medical staff that have given me a second chance. I am also very grateful to my Husband Norm, son Steve, daughter in-law, Holly, family and friends who helped me with my recovery. Want Great Eye Brows? Let’s Talk About Microblading! Why does microblading not last as long as other eyebrow tattooing techniques? By Melisa A. Ferriola, CPCP, LE
M
icroblading is the hot new trend in permanent eyebrows. It has hit the internet by storm – Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram all have thousands of pictures of gorgeous hair stroke brows done by a technique called “Microblading.” What is this new technique? Well, microblading is an advanced technique of “stroking” the pigment into the skin instead of “pushing” the pigment in. There are no blades used in this procedure, but it IS tattooing and it IS permanent. The result is very fine lines that closely simulate brow hairs for a more natural finished look. Here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions…
Is it semi-permanent? There are some technicians that are promoting this technique as semi-permanent. Using this terminology seems less scary to a client, but it is very misleading. By definition and tattoo industry standards, color is tattooed/implanted into the dermis of the skin. Pigments do fade in the skin over time, but that does not make the process semi-permanent. Touch ups, Refresh or Color Boost appointments will be needed and modifications can be made over time, but you should consider this a permanent procedure. www.TheWomensJournal.com
This is simply because a much smaller amount of pigment is inserted (tattooed) into the skin as compared to a fully or solidly filled eyebrow tattoos. Refresh or Color Boost appointments usually are needed or desired approximately every 12 to 18 months (solidly fill brows may last 2 to 3 years before needing a refresh). Check with your artist for maintenance pricing.
procedures before actually performing them under supervision. Please beware of Spa Estheticians that are taking 2-Day classes and offering this service.
What if I don’t like it?
How are permanent cosmetic procedures done?
Is there less training needed to learn microblading as compared to learning permanent cosmetics? No. If someone is new to the industry and does not already have a minimum of 100 hours of training in permanent cosmetics, they need to have a similar amount of training in microblading, even if it is for just that one type of procedure. There are many areas of study when learning these techniques, which include facial morphology and bone structure, brow shaping and design, color analysis, color theory, proper handling of equipment, prevention of cross-contamination, as well as practice work and the opportunity to observe
Permanent cosmetics procedures are performed using various methods, including the traditional tattoo or coil machines, the pen or rotary machine and the non-machine or hand method. I prefer the manual hand application method for a softer, more natural result.
What is involved with a procedure? The initial procedure will generally take approximately 2 hours. The process includes an initial consultation to select color and to complete a brief medical history. Before and after photos are taken to help both the client and technician maintain the client’s natural features. Topical anesthetics are applied and the pigment application is completed. Each procedure includes a follow up visit for adjusting the shape and color or density of the pigment. At Lasting Looks, this follow up procedure is included in the pricing. 29
No procedures should be done without your design approval. Your technician should also be setting realistic expectations. Permanent Cosmetics has
a different appearance in the skin than conventional makeup has on the skin. Although the procedure is considered permanent, these procedures do have flexibility in changing color and shape to some extent, depending on the expertise of your technician. There are lightening procedures available if really necessary. And fading will eventually occur. Talk to your technician about all your concerns at a consultation.

Don’t Suffer The Heartbreak Of Spring is the time to A Lost Diamond! clean , repair, restore By Ron Sayers, Graduate, Gemologist (GIA)
W
ith spring just around the corner you should be preparing for the more active lifestyle the warm weather will bring. It is the perfect time to have your jewelry professionally cleaned and checked for stone security. Most folks are unaware that gold or platinum can wear off of the prong tips on rings and chain links and clasps can become dangerously worn to the point of loss. At least once a week a customer comes to us to supply them with a new diamond for their engagement or wedding band because they forgot to have their jewelry professionally checked for security. How sad to wait on a customer who has lost the diamond they were engaged with, or possibly one that was a cherished gift from a parent or child. At Sayers Jewelers and Gemologists we have a highly trained staff of technicians with state of the art equipment to handle any inspection or repair situation. Our inspections are conducted with the use of high powered gem microscopes which can detect hair line cracks in prongs and ring mountings that can go undetected with ordinary jewelers loupes. We also link these microscopes to monitors so you can see for yourself that your jewelry is either safe to wear or in need of service. And best of all, your jewelry is inspected and

money you saved by use of good maintenance you can treat yourself to that new item you have had your eye on.
Should you need a simple repair, refinish or complete restoration, all work is done on site with meticulous attention to detail.
What can you do? Between visits for professional service, keep your jewelry looking its best with regular cleaning you can perform yourself. We have many excellent products designed specifically for different types of jewelry and we can also recommend household cleaners you may already have that will work just fine. There is, however, no one safe product for every item. What works for diamonds can ruin cultured pearls or turquoise.
In the event your jewelry is beyond practical or cost effective repair, the gems can be remounted in new jewelry items. These can be basic solitaire rings or one of our many ring mountings with side diamonds to give your original diamond a new updated look. We have hundreds in stock to choose from and many can be reset for you the same day.
Think about it: you have a dentist clean your teeth every six months but you still brush them every day yourself to keep them looking their best. Well it’s the same with
Custom one of a kind designs are another option. Sayers has state of the art computer design and manufacturing equipment second to none. We also do the traditional hand carving of the wax models when needed. If you can dream it, we can design and manufacture it especially for you. ooking back to the summer of 1998, I never thought a tiny tick bite would make me sick and I would never be well again. Nor did I ever think it would take 7 years, 15 doctors, and numerous tests later to get a proper diagnosis for the cause of all my symptoms. That tiny tick gave me one big problem: LYME DISEASE! Like most Lyme disease patients, I don’t recall feeling a tick bite or seeing a rash. I just felt sick. And the feeling just would never completely go away. My symptoms got so bad that for about 6 years I relied almost entirely on a wheel chair. What tick’d me off was that I went through endless tests and evaluations for all types of illnesses without being given a correct diagnosis for years. No one was able to tell me the cause of my debilitating nerve pain. Through a lab in California that specializes in tick-borne diseases, I received a positive test for Lyme. A short course of antibiotics would not work at this point. It took years to get my pain down to a manageable level by using various treatments. Lyme disease is the fastest growing vector-borne infectious disease in the country.

‘Tis The Season For Safe Driving By Susan D’Alonzo Ament, Esquire Susan D’Alonzo Ament is a partner with Morris James LLP and has practiced for 33 years representing personal injury victims. Over the years, Mrs. Ament has found that some women don’t understand the crucial need to have adequate automobile insurance coverage in the event of a serious accident. Susan Ament educates women on these needs every day in her practice and in seminars that she presents throughout the year.
T
he next few months can bring with them some of the most challenging driving conditions in Delaware. Whether you are traveling
locally or planning a trip to visit friends or family out of state this holiday season, it’s important to take some extra precautions when driving during the holiday season as well as into the winter months. To best avoid unpleasant situations, follow these safety suggestions: Perform routine maintenance. One of the easiest ways to avoid car mishaps is to drive a safe vehicle. Check and rotate your tires, get a tune-up and have your oil changed regularly, at least every six months. Keeping up with these tasks ensures that your vehicle will be in top driving condition for Delaware’s often-treacherous winter weather.
Prepare for inclement weather. Due to the unpredictability of the East Coast weather conditions, it’s always a good idea to keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. Emergency kits include items that can help signal others in times of distress, make minor repairs, or help keep you protected from excessive temperatures while stalled. These kits can be purchased for as little as $30.00 or you can make your own. Some items that you might want to include are blankets, water, road flares and tools. For more ideas on what to include in your vehicle emergency kit, speak to your auto insurance agent or visit www.redcross.org. Drive defensively. Just as the old adage goes, sometimes
the best offense is a good defense. When driving, be on the lookout for erratic drivers, slippery roads, snowdrifts and other unusual conditions. Never drive at speeds that would prevent you from taking necessary corrective actions, particularly in the evening when hazards are more difficult to see.
protective measures, we can significantly reduce the number of serious accidents that occur on our state’s roads and highways. Sadly, every day in our law practice, we see victims seriously injured in automobile accidents due to another person’s negligence or reckless driving. Be sure to follow these guidelines to protect yourself and others during one of the most wonderful times of the year.

My name is Holly Potoeski, and this walk is near and dear to my heart.
I
was diagnosed in 1986 with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of 4. Since then I have had hip and knee replacements to ankle fusions so I have had my fair share of struggles in my 33 years of life. The past 5 years of my life up until this past June have been the most difficult. I spent 5 years of my life in pain, the moment the IV drug and chemo (I took for 12 years straight) stopped working, up until this past June after trialling 8 other IV drugs, we found a medication that actually helped. We need to raise money for research not only for a cure but to find other medications that help manage the pain and the disease. The medication I found this past June is the last drug on the market that I have left to help me at this time. Not “if” but “WHEN” this drug stops working I am completely out of options. That is until they develop a new medication and the only way that can happen is to have money to fund research. I have trialled EVERY medication on the market at this point in my life. I have NO options left! Hopefully by raising money we can fund the research needed to develop the medications needed so other young children and adults won’t have to go to bed at night or wake up in the morning wondering if this is the last they will have a pain free day, or if it’s the last day your meds will help their condition, which is something that is always in the back of my mind. I am hoping children who are now diagnosed will not have to go through what I had to go through. We have come a far way the past 29 years with research however we have a far distance to go. I’m sure you can see why I have a big commitment to this cause. 38

Looking ahead to April, Civil War: The Musical will run two weekends and entertain audiences of all ages. For a full lineup, tickets and information visit schwartzcenter.com or call the Box Office at 302-678-5152 . Starting in 2017, the Schwartz will return to screening films. Tickets are already on sale for the Wild About Wilder Weekend featuring Gene Wilder staring in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Blazing Saddles. In addition to weekend features such as these, matinees on Wednesdays will be offered throughout the year to supplement live entertainment, which is a mainstay of the Schwartz Center’s programming.
One of the most popular attributes of the Schwartz Center is its concessions which can be enjoyed during the show. Patrons can select from a reasonablypriced lineup of snacks and candies as well as beverages of all types, including a full bar at most shows. Ample parking is available on nights and weekends in nearby parking lots. Several dining establishments are nearby which offer a discount to Schwartz Center ticket holders on the day of the show. Within walking distance, patrons will find trendy shops, bakeries, museums, galleries, taverns and more to make the visit to Dover memorable. Located in historic downtown Dover, the 550-seat theater is just part of what the Schwartz Center has to offer. Meeting rooms on the second and third floors are available for use. Both are accessible by elevator and are served by a catering kitchen. Whether it’s a small intimate event in one room or a full day event utilizing the whole building, the Schwartz Center is a fantastic option for event planners and fundraisers. With a Rental Coordinator on staff, it is easy to explore options for making the Schwartz home to nearly any event. One thing that is becoming

popular is for companies to buy a block of tickets to a show and host a private cocktail party or happy hour in one of the meeting rooms prior to the show. What a tasteful way to celebrate with employees or entertain clients without having to plan a full evening of entertainment! Companies and individuals wishing to support the arts through the Schwartz Center have a variety of options at all funding levels of sponsorship and membership. Details explaining these options are available on the Schwartz Center’s website www.schewartzcenter.com.
