Budapest’s new heart

08

Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura Barcelona ETSAB. FINAL PROJECT MArch 2019 Architecture and diversity Budapest’s new heart Cultural center & mediatheque Budapest is the capital of Hungary, a Central European country surrounded by many others. We have to understand Budapest as two different cities; Buda to the left, Pest to the right. The two cities had an independent development until 1880 when they decided to merge both cities in one, building the historical Chain Bridge to make it possible. Both of them are completely different, Buda has a lot of topography while Pest is completely plain, but they have something in common, both of them focus on the river; the Danube, the spine of the city. The most representative buildings of the city are on the riverside which generates a lot of movements around the river both local and tourist. When we take a look into the Pest side, we realize that the riverside is not accessible, therefore we find a series of urban & social conflicts that need to be solved. The city center is outdated, the car has much more preference in front of the pedestrian. There is a constant stoppage of the everyday foot routes and we find a constant infrastructure crossing which gives very little value to the center even though it is the most important place in the city. Also, it has so much residual space that generates a bad use of it, and that overcomes to little local implication. The goal of this project is to reconnect the city with the river and for that so we have to find the generator of this conflict. When we check out the riverside we can find the conflict zone and we realize that the problem is that it does not work as a swivel between the city and the river if not the opposite it works as a knot disconnect. We need a piece that responds at the language that has the city a piece to articulate, a renewal of the center of Budapest where we can find a representative space that gives the value to the existent, a space that will be possible due to the morphological characteristics of the city. A space without barriers with accessibility for everybody.

The courtyard city

Budapest University of Technology & Economics BME. MULTIPLE FIELDS DESIGN 2017 The transparency community The courtyard city Public square & student housing The lack of private dormitories and the huge amount of incoming exchange students makes looking for a dorm in Budapest extremely difficult and risky due to Internet fraud. There is a very strict politic in Hungary in order to help their local students to find a cheap and decent place to live when they move to Budapest, due to that almost all the student residences in the city are public all of them managed by the local administration and also they are not available for all the exchange students. A topic was given to us to begin this project; <<transparency>>. When we first think about transparency, the first thing that comes to mind is the visual concept of the word but it can be many more ways to treat it, not just visually but with the sound, the light or even generating a connection between different atmospheres, and we think the best way to achieve all of this is creating a community. For the location of this project a privileged spot was given to us, in the middle of the Jewish quarter of Budapest, four ancient buildings are where all our work had to be done. These buildings are located between two squares, one square is at the end of a pedestrian street and the other one is in front of a school and a church, so our idea was simple, we wanted to restore the ancient buildings keeping the main envelopes of it -the ones that were facing the streets- and also we wanted to keep the structure of it renewing the interiors and connecting the four buildings into one turning it into a student housing for incoming students. On the ground floor, we wanted to join both squares making a big public space (to meet, to cross, to walk) so we freed it and we started building above. Finally, for the courtyard envelope, we wanted to bring fresh modern architecture to this old part of the city but we did not want it to be very flashy so we thought the best way to work with that was in the interior of the courtyard so we demolished the old buildings and build a new building along with the new square.

New use for a stadium

Barcelona was known to the world as the city it is nowadays due to the Olympic games of 1992, during this period a lot of changes were made in the city and a lot of new architecture was brought to it, but long before that, almost 70 years before in Barcelona took place the international exposition of 1929 and here was where the city began to change its morphology. A lot of emblematical buildings were made, such as the Barcelona Pavilion made by Mies van der Rohe and many-many others. One of these new buildings that were made to show to the world the greatness of the city was the “Palau d’Esports” (the sports palace), which was right at the bottom of the mountain where the exposition took place. This building kept on working all along the years but as time went by its use was lost. The absence of public money, the hugeness, and the abandonment of the place made it impossible to maintain. So in this proposal, we find a rehabilitation project for the old “Palau d’Esports” of Barcelona. The “Palau” is transformed into a public library for the city and the hood. We wanted to keep the most iconic parts of the buildings such as the structural ribs of the roof, or the concrete stands that surround the center of the stadium and to achieve that we did not want to make a lot of changes nor demolish most parts of the buildings so we decided to make a floating glass box in the middle of the stadium, a box that goes outside the borders of the building running into the street to call pedestrians inside and to tell to the city that a new use was made for this building. By keeping most of the building and just adjusting this new floating box to it we focus the renewal of the program to this box and we can use the stadium for other uses that were also programmed within the library. As it is floating we provide a void that makes it easy for the natural ventilation of the building which helps to create new atmospheres inside and on the other hand, inside the box we create a balcony with views of the “ruins” of the stadium while we are studying.

Panjiayuan market

Tsinghua University in collab. with ETSAB & Texas Architecture — 2015 Taking inspiration from the traditional forms of the Chinese market and infusing it with European architecture the Panjiayuan Market was refurbished with a new organizaton trying to transform it into a new modern market with mediterranian waves and chinese forms.

A series of scaffolding structures are organized all along the Danube to create temporary pavilions to generate a new spaces for street artists, the resulting of this forms attempts to display a modern space due to the evolution of the street art in the city and the lack of space for the artists in it.
