amplighter Brewing Co.’s popularity has skyrocketed in the last couple years thanks to many things: new beer releases, brewery collaborations, the welcoming of their café concept Pepita Coffee into the lamplighter family, and a spot in Forbes 30 under 30 for Co-Founders AC Jones and Cayla Marvil. Oh, and for the spirits lovers out there, Lamplighter announced they are opening a joint micro distillery called Luminati Spirits in their hometown of Cambridge.

Lamplighter is one of many Boston-based breweries that has gained serious traction in the national craft beer spotlight, and one of many that was forced to close taproom consumption and transition to curbside pick-up and/or delivery, a solution to the pandemic welcomed by craft beer lovers, but threatening to the bottom line of the breweries themselves. Supporting your favorite local brewery has never been more important. So, if you are looking forward to the days of sitting in a sun-filled taproom sipping a full-pour of Rabbit Rabbit or Birds of a Feather, do yourself a favor and add that 4-pack to your cart.

Things look a bit different these days, but Bow Market’s mission to support its community of vendors has never been stronger. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Boston, the Bow Market team was forced to adapt, and they did so quickly. ucked in a public courtyard in the center of Union Square is Bow Market, a collection of 30+ local vendors who sell a variety of products such as shoes, beer, pierogis, music equipment, and everything in between. here are few businesses that have as much of an impact on their community as Club Passim does on the city of Boston. Club Passim was opened in 1958 by Joyce Kalina and Paula Kelley and is one of Boston’s best venues for live folk, bluegrass, and other diverse genres of music. As with most businesses, Club Passim has had to transition their operations online, but that hasn’t stopped them from offering a full a roster of shows available via live stream. They are also relaunching their renowned School of Music online, accessible for adults of all ages and skill levels. Most notably, however, is their Passim Emergency Artist Relief Fund (PEAR) that has raised more than $100,000 for artists affected by COVID-19, and more than 175 artists have submitted songs for the Keep Your Distance Fest in support of the PEAR Fund. taying positive and healthy has never been more important than right now. But with forceful changes in every facet of our lives, it can be challenging to take care of ourselves in the ways we once did. We spoke with Coeli Marsh, EdM, E-RYT 500, founder of the Teacher’s Study Project, a training and mentoring school for professional yoga teachers, about the ways in which we all can continue to practice good health and mindfulness. Marsh has

She received her master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and was certif ied and taught for many years at the original Baptiste yoga studios here in Boston. With a deep understanding of both the student and teacher experience, Marsh is ready to help anyone adapt to the changes have occurred as a result of the pandemic.

So much adaptation has been needed as a teacher, as we all have experienced in our daily lives, and most have had to completely reconf igure what it means to practice wellness, and to be in community with others. Like teachers in all disciplines, yoga teachers have had to do an insane self-led crash course in learning how to be useful on Zoom, jumping full heartedly into the task of keeping a positive attitude in the middle of daunting circumstances. WHAT ARE THE FIRST STEPS IF YOU HAVE NEVER ENGAGED IN A WELLNESS PRACTICE? There are so many ways to jump in, and I think the f irst step is to know that you don’t need to be good at it, and all are welcome. Because we are only experiencing virtual classes, you can try a class from the comfort of your home and avoid the worry of commuting through traff ic to a studio (and you can wear your pjs to class too!). Yoga classes are judgment free zones, but even more so now, as you are in complete control of the environment in your home. Beginners classes, offered by yoga studios, YouTube or Instagram are good resources for anyone wanting to give it a try.

HOW HAS WHAT YOU TEACH BEEN USEFUL DURING THIS PANDEMIC? If a fraction of the population was super stressed out people before Covid-19, now everyone is really feeling it. I don’t hear people say, “I’m really happy and feeling emotionally stable” that often these days. Although we have had to adjust to the new normal of experiencing mindfulness over Zoom and other virtual platforms, it is tremendously clear that students of all levels deeply appreciate that chance to practice yoga and see the faces of their fellow students. I have witnessed people trying yoga and meditation in the last month that would never have given it a chance before this crisis. HOW HAS THE NEEDS OF YOUR STUDENTS CHANGED, AND HOW HAS IT FORCED YOU TO ADAPT? I am f inding people need support, emotionally, physically, and spiritually, more than ever. Being in home isolation can be grueling: juggling a “home off ice” (your living room with kids running wild), home schooling, exquisitely painful levels of stress from loss of income, changes in physical routines, all has yielded students eager for the chance to move and connect in a virtual class. People want some relief. Some of our community are not staying home, and instead are working in hospitals, as f irst responders, or in the essential jobs of the service industry. I have noticed that these students are deeply grateful to engage in self-care and stress reduction. Almost all students need to burn off some stuck energy, and a good helping of humor goes a long way.

HAVE YOU IDENTIFIED ANY SILVER LININGS AS A RESULT OF THE CHANGES THAT HAVE OCCURRED? This is such a beautiful question, as at f irst glance we have lost so much all around the world, and suffering is quite evident in all communities. There is no doubt about that. But I have def initely seen some silver linings: families connecting in a way that would have never happened before, people slowing down and seeing and feeling the world around them in a totally unique way. During this pandemic many studios have started to offer low cost or free virtual classes for people who have lost income, making the practice accessible in a way that it never was before. Students, and really all citizens of the world, have had to call on a powerful emotional and spiritual f lexibility to endure these circumstances, and this has yielded a clear and tangible place of possibility. I witness this every day in my classes and coaching and can only hope that we as a culture bring this attitude with us as we all emerge from our time in isolation, and go forward with a newfound appreciation and commitment for our health, and our connection to each together.

hen we think of exercise we often think of working out our body, forgetting that our mind is just as important, if not more, to keep in good health. HOW HAS WHAT YOU TEACH BEEN USEFUL DURING THIS PANDEMIC?

WHAT ARE THE FIRST STEPS IF YOU HAVE NEVER ENGAGED IN A MINDFULNESS PRACTICE?

Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, one of the foremost teachers of Tibetan Buddhism in the West, used to say that what we are fundamentally practicing is "basic sanity." While there are many ways to get through this strange Covid time, I f ind that none of us will be able to get through it without some cultivation of that "basic sanity." Right now people's minds are like a lawn that grows weeds at a very high rate. Left to its own habituations, the mind can quickly delve into an overwhelming state of fear, catastrophe, worry, frustration... you name it. While these feelings are all understandable, normal, and worthy of our own compassion and patience, each one of us is inherently wanting to experience some moments where we feel mentally just ok. Collecting those moments where we may feel some ease is essential. It is the fortitude that will get us through the marathon of this experience. With good

While there are tons of resources with apps and websites and books, I still f ind that the absolute best way to learn this practice is to seek someone who actually teaches the practice to people. It's been thousands of years of people seeking out a teacher to learn how to meditate. That method of learning is tested and works well. There are more competent practitioners and teachers in our country now than ever before. It may take a little digging to f ind someone whose personality, teaching method, and view is resonant with you and your needs, but it's worth taking that time. I also think the apps and YouTube and the websites are wonderful to get some people started and keep others practicing and learning with continuity, but at some point, it is helpful to f ind an actual teacher.

instruction, context, and support, this is what we learn from meditation practice.

TEACHING METHODS, AND HAS IT BEEN USEFUL TO YOUR STUDENTS?

HOW HAVE THE NEEDS OF YOUR STUDENTS CHANGED DURING OUR TIME AT HOME?

It was a really an interesting transition when the quarantine started. I remember the quarantine started in our household on a Friday and I thought "well, it was nice to have a job. Solid 20 year run." My wife suggested to see if students for my Sunday class were interested in trying to connect by Zoom. The class was actually profoundly connective and joyful. It was a pleasure for us to see one another in a time where we were all missing our communities of support. The online classes and the community of practitioners have really become a place of connection and mutual support for all of us involved. It is said in the meditation world that we look to our practices, our communities and the teachings for a sense of support and safety. In my experience, it is felt just as much in an online format as it is when we are all together. Now, don't get me wrong, I'd rather be with everyone, but this is truly better than nothing. In some ways, many of us are connected to folks that we might not have had time to connect with in the past.

In all my years of teaching, I've found that the absolute best meditation students are those who are pregnant. They are very utilitarian with it. There's no bs. They know that they are going to have to learn this practice and apply it just to get through something that is imminent and undoubtedly challenging. It may be a funny comparison, but these days people are coming to the practice with that same immediate practicality. They know they are in the midst of something that's really happening and truly a challenge, and they are going to have to draw on any resources and skills that can help. Are the needs different than before? It's hard to tell. People still want that "basic sanity." They want to experience well-being, a sense of purpose, some peace. The needs are the same, they're just bigger. More present. More immediate. And in some ways, more valued.

outh Villages provides help and support for children and young adults across the United States who face a range of emotional, mental health and behavioral problems. Many families go to them because of physical or sexual abuse, substance abuse or suicidal ideation or attempts. They work with young adults and families to strengthen their support systems and dramatically improve their long-term success. Last year, Youth Villages helped more than 1,000 young people and families throughout Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The COVID-19 virus has caused signif icant stress on the youth and families they serve, and they need your help now more than ever. In fact, services have expanded about 5% organization wide as the demand for intensive in-home therapy has increased since the onset of the pandemic. Their youth and families are facing job loss, limited access to transportation and are struggling to meet their basic needs. They need food, shelter, guidance and stability. Youth Villages is doing everything they can to give these families the extra support they need in these diff icult times, including providing technology to families in need so they can participate in telehealth sessions, helping families to pay rent and utility bills, ensuring families have internet access so kids can keep up with school work and

providing funds to support basic needs like food and diapers. Gina, a mother whose family receives services through Youth Villages, is facing new challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. She is increasingly concerned about safety in her home and her children falling behind in school because they don’t have access to the internet. Youth Villages staff provided alarms for the windows and doors in Gina’s home and installed a new lock on the front door to help put the family at ease. They were even able to get Gina and her family two months of free internet access so her children can go to school virtually. “These days have been so hard for us not being able to go out and see our friends, family or any mental health professionals. We appreciate that Youth Villages continues to make strides to make us feel valued, supported, and comfortable during these extremely diff icult times,” said Gina. You can help families like Gina’s. To make a gift to provide groceries, technology and funds for families who are struggling to meet their basic needs, donate here. Youth Villages is grateful for any help you can provide to their youth and families during this time, and hope that you and your families are staying safe and healthy.
