Abraham Lincoln was a fan, and, so too, was the supremely elegant Fred Astaire. More recent converts include the dapper and debonair George Clooney and David Beckham. We are, of course, talking about Brooks Brothers. Is there a brand that says more about cool, East Coast style? We are delighted to welcome this beloved brand to Arnotts. A good friend of Arnotts’ Chairman Mark Schwartz for many years, we know that Brooks Brothers chief executive Claudio Del Vecchio is really looking forward to giving Irish men a whole new look and yet another reason to visit Arnotts. It’s not just the menswear department that has been revamped. We also have a new shoe floor and some wonderful new womenswear brands to introduce for spring/summer – Anna Sui, Twenty8Twelve and Gestuz, to name just a few. In the accessories department, we are pleased to introduce the Scarf Salon, which will be showing off a host of new brands, including Echo and Codello. Also, look out for the awardwinning designer Mary Katrantzou for Longchamp, plus stylish designs from See by Chloé and Z Spoke by Zac Posen. In the children’s department, we are delighted to welcome ilovegorgeous – much-loved brand of fashionistas including Nicki Macfarlane, designer to the Royal Family, and Kate Moss. As ever, a fabulous array of brands are on display in our recently renovated kitchen department to inspire you to new culinary heights. These heights have already been reached in Clodagh’s Kitchen on the top floor. In this issue, the team had a great time dreaming up shoots that tell spring’s fashion stories. For women, we captured the latest looks that have been inspired by florals. For the men we capture the retro cool of rockabilly style. We stepped further back in time for the interiors story, which features pretty crockery and glassware with a vintage, tea time feel. We also caught up with Christian Courtin-Clarins, head of Clarins, who revealed his familyrun business is far more than skin-deep. As promised, we are building on a fantastic and seasoned tradition to serve the evolving lives and styles of you, our valued customer, and hope you enjoy this spring/summer issue. ARNOTTS CHAIRMAN

Q&A with nicki macfarlane, exclusive to Arnotts.

how much input did cAtherine hAve? Catherine and her family were involved at every stage of the process. She had a very clear vision of the look she wanted for her bridal party, so we worked with her to create a design that fulfilled this. She attended every fitting – each time she made it great fun for the children – and was a total delight to work with. how did you feel on the dAy of the royAl wedding? We were up extremely early on the day, as we were invited to dress the girls. We were pretty tired and nervous, but very relieved, happy and enormously proud to see how lovely the little girls looked as they walked down the aisle. how did the first holy communion rAnge come About? Following the Royal Wedding, we had a lot of enquiries from people wanting bespoke creations for their daughter’s First Holy Communion and we realised a new collection of elegant dresses would be well-received. Happily, it was an instant success. tell me About the collection ... We have taken some of the most popular styles from our ready-to-wear bridesmaid range and adapted them to suit girls of Holy Communion age. We’ve also introduced some new styles. They are all made in the finest silks in pure white or ivory with delicate details that will make any girl feel really special. Are you hAppy with the outcome? I’m thrilled with the collection. Having specialised in weddings for so long, I feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to have a small part in such a hugely important day in a girl’s life.

Add some funk to your wardrobe with these amazing new brands.

Gwyneth Paltrow, the face behind the latest Coach campaign, shares some of her style secrets with us ...

Pretty Prints.

Summer Chic

At Arnotts, we have fallen in love with the designs of Anna Sui. Her collections are full of beautiful prints and bright pops of colour, managing to be feminine and rock-n-roll at the same time – she’s won us over. Look out for the collection instore this March.

New to Arnotts for this spring/summer is Twenty8Twelve, a truly unique brand, which delivers a collection of relaxed separates and offbeat dresses that all interchange perfectly with each other. This collection offers classic pieces at affordable prices. Dresses start at €195, t-shirts at €60 and fashion denim at €120.

Backstage Pass

Gestuz, a very, very cool brand started by two friends just five years ago, knows exactly where it’s at – think “backstage rock ‘n’ roll life” with a hint of “elegance”. And we know exactly what they mean. One look at their rich mix of crafted knitwear, high-quality leather pieces, supersexy dresses, and cutting edge denim is enough.

HOT STUFF! All the hottest legs in Hollywood are wearing them, from Heidi Klum to Emma Watson. Coloured jeans are a great way to brighten up summer days and jazz up summer nights. With a number of great brands at Arnotts, inluding Hudson, Paige Premium Denim, Guess, G Star and Levis, there’s a colour for everyone. Watermelon jeans, €220 and lemon jeans, €220, both Hudson. Green jeans, €100, Guess.

N O B O DY D O E S I T B E T T E R Everybody who’s anybody when it comes to cool, laid-back fashion knows all about this up-and-coming brand. They source their denim in the best Japanese mills and fly it to Oz, where it is hand-treated and turned into jeans to die for. We love these mod-cut skinny jeans, right, €245.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? These days, it’s all about a uniform. I love classic items updated with simple new pieces – a necklace, a sandal, a handbag. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST COACH BAG? I remember having a black Coach Duffle bag and just loving it. Back in the late 1980s, it seemed that every girl in New York had a Coach bag. It was a rite of passage. It’s fun to see those bags are back. It shows how timeless they are. WHAT DOES HAVING PERSONAL STYLE MEAN TO YOU? It means knowing what works for you. I learned early on that following trends is not always the way to go. What is flattering to you is what’s fashionable. WHAT ROLE DO ACCESSORIES PLAY IN CREATING AN EVERYDAY LOOK ... AND AN EVENING LOOK? Accessories are key in creating a look, but none more so than a handbag. I love shoes and jewellery, but you cram your life into your bag! Your bag says a lot about you, so choose wisely. HOW HAVE YOU SEEN AMERICAN STYLE INFLUENCING PEOPLE IN OTHER COUNTRIES? Classic American sportswear has really shaped how people dress around the world, even though some cultures might not admit that. The t-shirt, the jean, the leather jacket, the sneaker. Some aspects of American style have become global style. You can say the same about a Coach handbag. So many things that Coach pioneered in terms of shapes and special features over the past 70 years are now the accepted vocabulary among handbag designers around the world. WHAT DO YOU CARRY IN YOUR BAG? I’m probably the same as every woman. I always start out with good intentions and wind up carrying way more than I wanted. By the end of the day, you think to yourself, what’s in here? MAGA ZINE

ADVERTORIAL

LAUREN BY RALPH LAUREN FOR SPRING 2012

W

hat began 40 years ago with a collection of ties has grown into an entire world, redefining American style. Ralph Lauren has always stood for providing quality products, creating worlds and inviting people to take part in our dream. The company was the innovator of lifestyle advertisements that tell a story and the first to create stores that encourage customers to participate in that lifestyle. The arrival of every new collection is a landmark occasion in the fashion year. This March, we look forward to the Expedition concept, which is based on Indochineinspired icons that are sexy yet casual, with exotic layers of colour, pattern and texture. Dusky blues and romantic fuchsia make a striking and elegant statement against a ground of timeless khaki. The lightweight Evena linen sweater, for example, right, is finished with bold stripes and a bateau neckline for easy elegance. While luxurious linen yarns are intricately woven into a chic, rustic pattern on the timeless Vidana fauxwrap top. Paisley, batik and wood block prints add a graphic element to feminine silhouettes. An elegant batik print, for example, lends effortless glamour to the breezy Polina cowlneck dress in featherweight fine-ribbed cotton. A further dimension is added with layers of texture – a graceful slipdress and classic button-down are reimagined in vintage-inspired pointelle or ultrasmooth silk tussah. Take the long -sleeved Sharnel cardigan, which is 40

MAGA ZINE

a loose and airy knit of twisted cotton yarns crafted in a softly draped silhouette with intricate pointelle ruffles. Unconstructed cotton offers a less tailored look; with a silk-like drape, jackets and dresses are cool and confident. Rendered in lightweight cotton twill with a belted waist and bellows pockets, the Jameson belted twill jacket fuses feminine styling with utility sensibility. So this spring, yet again, Ralph Lauren promises classic romance, quality and creative surprises. Unique details – a drawstring neckline on a linen shirtdress, suede sarong skirt or braided leather halter – capture the collection’s cultured and eclectic vibe.

technology news Bose soundlink For large living rooms, size is not a problem when it comes to digital hiFi speakers. For more constrained spaces, like bedrooms, kitchens or home offices, you can’t afford a large box taking up valuable square footage just for the sake of your tunes. a high-quality compromise comes in the slim, cutting-edge design of Bose’s soundlink, a marvel of audio engineering. it earns its garlands for two principle reasons. First, it streams audio flawlessly over Bluetooth from a huge range of devices (including ipads and iphones). second, it is amazingly slim (just two inches) for a device that projects such a rich, deep sound. even without the ability to act as a Bluetooth speakerphone, the soundlink, €299, is cutting-edge acoustic engineering.

sonos play:5 There are MP3 speakers and there are MP3 speakers. If you’re looking for a tinny box that will do for the occasional Skype call to your Australian cousins, there is no shortage of choice. But if you’re looking for something that begins to compare with a proper HiFi speaker, the market becomes a lot more select. And that’s where the Play:5 from Sonos, €399, makes its entrance. For the price, it is about the best in quality that you can get in a single, standalone wireless-compatible digital music speaker. Its principle function is to play all the digital music that you have accumulated on your computer over the years. But it can also be used smoothly as an excellent internet streaming speaker (for accounts such as Last.fm or Eircom.ie’s Music Hub). It helps

that the device is elegantly designed which, given its 14.5 inches in length and 8.5 inches in height, is important in any living room. A beautiful fusion of IT and HiFi.

hookedup

From digital music players to the latest in audio engineering, Adrian Weckler has it covered.

There are two primary purposes to owning the latest, greatest gadget. The first is to rub your best friend’s nose in it. The second is to actually improve your life. In this issue, we’ve decided to take the higher path. Here, so, are five gadgets that will make your existence a safer, richer and more acoustically satisfying experience.

iClarity HD

OtterBox Commuter for iPhone 4S Despite lofty claims, smartphone insurance is not always reliable in covering the kind of wear-and-tear that an active life can visit upon a shiny new iPhone 4 or 4S. A tough, durable case is a far better bet. OtterBox’s Commuter case, €29.99, has a number of advantages over its rivals. Its polycarbonate shell is tough enough to withstand all but the roughest treatment. But it is also light enough (just 30 grams) not to add unwelcome extra weight to a handbag, or the dreaded sag-factor to a pocket. As a bonus, it also improves your phone’s reception: an uncased iPhone 4 (or 4S) can lead to dropped calls (due to a design flaw in its antenna).

SonoS Bridge

The problem with living in an age of digital music, MP3s and “internet streaming” is that most of us have no idea how to get it off our computers and into our living rooms. That’s where a good wireless HiFi system – such as Sonos – comes in. In a nutshell, this type of system allows you to play your computer’s music (like your iTunes collection or your internet-streaming account) on speakers in another room (or rooms). The Sonos Bridge, €49, provides a connection from your home WiFi to the Sonos wireless frequency (which is distinct from a general WiFi frequency so that there is no annoying interference in the sound quality from competing wireless devices). It is designed to work specifically with Sonos speakers, although it can also be used to connect devices other than computers (such as an old video game console) to your home’s wireless network. A nice touch is controlling it from your iPhone via a downloaded Sonos app.

While the world loves iPhones and iPads, it wishes that Apple had spent a little more time investing in a universally compatible Bluetooth system. But while you may struggle to wirelessly connect your iPhone to that photobooth in the pharmacy, there’s no such problem syncing it with Monster’s powerful little iClarity HD, 899.99, a standalone speaker that outperforms many of its larger rivals on sound quality. The iClarity can be used to play music from your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad; setting it up takes about two minutes. It also acts as a powerful speakerphone (with a builtin microphone) that works for ordinary calls or Skype. To recharge the gadget, simply plug into a computer’s USB port (it doesn’t come with an external charger, but does have a USB cable thrown in).

BEAUTY BB perfect

First came face powder and panstick. Foundation and primers followed. Now, thanks to Asian women’s endless quest for perfect skin, the latest genre of complexion-perfecting make-up, BB creams, has finally reached our shores. They are a hybrid of SPF, tinted moisturiser, skin illuminator, pore minimiser and blemish diffuser, but also have hydrating, anti-ageing and healing properties. They are a onestop-shop miracle cream that almost replaces the need for moisturiser and foundation. With a natural, glowy finish, they airbrush out imperfections and, better still, are almost imperceptible, so forget tide marks. The only challenge is deciding which one to choose! We’re loving Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB cream, €40, and Estée Lauder DayWear BB Cream, €40, above right.

FRAGRANCES SKINCARE Repair sun-damaged and winterweary skin with Shiseido BioPerformance Advanced Super Revitalizing Cream, €88. With wrinkle-fighting hyaluronic acid and raspberry extract, uneven skin tone and dehydration don’t stand a chance.

Exclusive to Arnotts from the beginning of March, Lancôme Renergie Multi-lift, €70, is the follow-up moisturiser to the eye cream launch last year, which immediately won millions of fans globally, thanks to tension technology, specially designed to stimulate ten key proteins which literally lift the skin structure from within. Glycobiology is currently being harnessed in a cure for malaria as it “unlocks” sick cells to help healing messages get through. YSL has adapted this technology to heal ageing skin cells and to encourage them to behave as if young and healthy in their new Forever Youth Liberator, €77. Taking the term beauty sleep to dizzying new heights, Dior Capture XP Ultimate Deep Wrinkle Correction Night Concentrate, €110, kick-starts skin cell activity to encourage faster, healthier regeneration, eventually “pushing up” the depressed wrinkle for a smoother, more even look.

Looking to the sea to restore youthfulness is nothing new, but Clinique Repairwear Uplifting Firming Cream, €65, has harnessed the powers of algae, not just for wrinkles and lines, but to help visibly rebuild and volumise the skin, while proteins and peptides strengthen the natural collagen and elastin network to result in plumper, more spongy skin.

Christian Courtin-Clarins loves to put himself in other people’s shoes, especially women’s in his bid to develop one of France’s greatest businesses. He talks to Liz Dwyer about the highs and lows of captaining the great ship Clarins.

C

hristian Courtin-Clarins cuts a debonair dash as he saunters through Dublin’s Merrion Hotel, procuring admiring glances from the females sneaking a giddy peek at the hearty cosmetics mogul from behind the safety of their cucumber sandwiches and pots of Earl Grey. At 61, Christian belies the ageing process, a testament perhaps to the skincare dynasty his father, Jacques Courtin-Clarins, set up in 1954. Or perhaps his jeunesse is down to good French living, a stunning second wife, and two young children (aged six and four). Christian is in Dublin to spread the Clarins gospel and its eco endeavours, but there is other family business he must attend to. “I’m under strict instructions not to return to France without genuine Aran jumpers for my two eldest daughters, Virginie and Claire (aged 26 and 24),” he says. “They’re the height of fashion in Paris and New York, they tell me,” he adds amiably, playing down his obvious insight into knowing exactly what makes women tick. After all, the company’s core – and very lucrative 70

philosophy – is to “listen to women and give them what they want”. The billion-dollar company was created around the time of World War II, when Jacques was studying medicine and researching treatments for circulatory problems. He discovered that massage improved his patients’ skin, which in turn made them feel more positive. Inspired, he put all his energies into proving the beneficial effects of

Six decades on, the Clarins Institut de Beauté he set up in Paris is still at the epicentre of the heart of all the company’s research.

TOP Christian Courtin-Clarins. ABOVE Christian and his two daughters, Virginie and Claire.

profile

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE LEFT Christian is heavily involved in all of Clarins’ sustainable development activities, a topic very close to his heart. Here at Plantation Katafray he helps harvest botanicals with the locals. The Clarins family trilogy, Christian, with his father Jacques, and his brother Oliver. Jacques Courtin-Clarins at one of the first Clarins cosmetic counters. Clarins has produced numerous beauty classics over the years.

At the end of his reign, Jacques employed more than 6,000 people across the globe, including his two sons, Christian and Oliver, but the heirs had to prove their worth. “We had to put in some serious blood, sweat and tears first,” Christian says. “Just like he did.” Christian started in 1974 and focused on the export arm of the business, expanding the brand into 128 countries. Oliver, in contrast, became an orthopaedic surgeon, but he now uses his scientific training to help with the vital work of continuing Clarins’ skin research. The brothers are busy passing the work ethic on to the next generation. “My elder daughters are not involved in Clarins just yet, and nor are Oliver’s,” Christian explains. “We want them to make their own way in the world first. If they want to be a leader of a company, they must understand it’s extremely difficult to make a business work. “You must be able and willing to do everything, from fixing the electricity and dealing with the press to selling behind a counter and knowing all the legal implications of your trade. When they have done at least five years running their own show, then they will understand. “Ultimately, though, it’s their heritage. They grew up with their granddad making potions, which amusingly they thought he was making just for them. They were shocked to discover they were being used by millions of women. They are both working hard at the moment

in related industries, so I’m sure they will be with us soon.” Christian is also committed to the company’s scientific heritage. He has no desire to steer the family ship into the skin-deep world of celebrity marketing that is so beloved by most major cosmetic houses. “We’re first and foremost a skincare company,” he says. “If I’ve a choice of spending €3 million on a famous face or on proper scientific research, I’ll choose the latter without one second of hesitation. I don’t want to inflate the price of a face cream just to pay some Hollywood star’s fees for half a day’s work.” Since its inception, Clarins has been first off the block with umpteen skincare discoveries, often finding ingenious ways to harness the best of nature so women’s beauty can be enhanced and prolonged. And Christian predicts science and cosmetics will continue to help us stay young. “Frankly speaking,” he says. “About ten years ago, when a women turned 40, physically her time was up. Nowadays, though, women in their forties are extremely sexy and can work a bikini as well as a 20-year-old. This is down to better diets, more exercise and more advanced products. So far, I think we’ve postponed the ageing process by about ten years for many women, and I’m aiming to add another five years onto that. And then, hopefully, we can just keep on adding to that figure to keep women at their peak for longer.” Now that’s a promise we’ll hold him to. Maga zine

BEAUTY BEST FOR MATURE SKIN

BEST FOR OILY SKIN

Clarins Ever Matte Foundation, SPF 15, €32 Unlike most oil-absorbing foundations, which zap the oil out of the drier parts of your skin, this only works to soak up sebum on the areas that need it most, namely the T-zone. It blends easily into the skin, creating a micro-aerated film on the surface that allows it to breathe without drying out the skin, and yet it still gives skin the finish of a dewy liquid base.

Bobbi Brown Extra Repair Foundation SPF 25, €52 Killing two birds with one stone, this balm-foundation is packed with skin-nourishing ingredients and the added benefit of SPF 25 and vitamin E. With medium coverage, it imparts a dewy glow and lasts all day without settling into lines or pores. A big bonus is that it uses powerful peptides to boost collagen levels beneath the skin’s surface.

BEST FOR PERFECT COLOUR MATCH

Estée Lauder Invisible Fluid Makeup, €34.50 Despite the fact that this foundation gives that great coverage that all Estée Lauder bases are synonymous with, this new formula is virtually invisible on the skin, as the NASA-like pigment technology allows your skin’s natural undertones to shine through and to influence the shade for a perfect colour match.

BEST FOR PARTIED OUT SKIN

BEST FOR LONG WEAR

Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra 24H, €35 The cult Teint Idole formula has been upgraded to a comfy long-wear product that doesn’t sacrifice glow, while the new pigment technology means a better colour match, too. If you want high all-day coverage without looking powdery or as if you’re wearing a mask, this is just the ticket.

BEST FOR YOUNG SKIN

BEST FOR A VELVET, LONG WEAR FINISH

Chanel Perfection Lumière, €44 Having replaced Pro Lumière, this foundation has a lot to live up to and promised 24-hour coverage. And boy does it deliver. Although long-wear, it’s as light as a moisturiser, imparts a soft-focus velvety finish to the skin, matte enough to blur over imperfections and redness, but dewy enough to allow your own skin tones to shine through.

Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Hydrating Foundation SPF 10, €39 Having married all the long-wear technology of backstage and professional foundation with an oil-free, lightweight base, Smashbox has whipped up the perfect formula for young gals on the go. Packed with light diffusing spheres, it blurs blemishes and imperfections on the surface, while skin improving ingredients and a cocktail of vitamins visibly improve skin health from within. 74

Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Foundation, €34 Oxygen facials have been a celebrity favourite for years now, and Benefit’s new foundation formula works on the same brightening and skin-plumping premise as the A-list treatment. Packed with antioxidants, SPF and oxygen compounds, skin is given an instant wake-up call, looking more luminous and healthy, as if you’ve just walked through the Wicklow Mountains.

BEST FOR UNIFYING SKIN TONE

Clinique Even Better Makeup, SPF 15, €28.50 Research has shown that when a stranger is trying to guestimate your age, it’s your skin tone that lets you down, not wrinkles and lines. Even Better, a light, sheer foundation in its newest guise, is less oily than its predecessor, boasts long-wear technology, and works to unify the skin tone underneath while you wear it, minimising brown spots, imperfections and boosting overall clarity in six weeks. Kitchenkit Many hands, so they say, make light work in the kitchen. But so do the best gadgets. Ben Webb chats with Ireland’s leading chefs to discover the kitchen kit they just can’t do without.

Mickael Viljanen

Mickael Viljanen has been showered with awards recently – including the Chef of the Year title from Food & Wine magazine and the RAI – for his stellar cooking at Gregans Castle Hotel. One of my favourite pieces of kitchen equipment is the 1 Kenwood Major Titanium Chef, €749. It’s simply one of those pieces that is on the go from morning to night – between bread doughs, mincing, and pastry use, it really does have a heavy workload every single day. It’s also the one piece that I have never, ever had any problems with in four years, and is now a highly valued part of everyday kitchen preparations.

Clodagh McKenna

Ballymaloe-trained Clodagh McKenna has organised farmers’ markets, set up a commercial kitchen, written cookbooks, presented cookery programmes and, most recently, has opened Clodagh’s Kitchen and Homemade by Clodagh at Arnotts. I can’t live without my 2 Microplane, from €24.95. It grates Parmesan cheese like angel hair, which absorbs into pasta perfectly. It’s also great for decorating cakes – just glide a lemon or orange on it over your cake and they fall off like perfectly-thin strips. I’ve had mine for five years now, and it’s still like new so well worth the investment. Maga zine

Domini Kemp

After training at Leiths in London and working in the Michelin-starred Peacock Alley, Domini Kemp started the itsa chain of gourmet bagel shops with her sister, Peaches. She is also the highly popular food writer for The Irish Times. My can’t-live-without-gadget for home-use is my 3 Magimix food processor, €349. It’s the only really vital piece of electrical equipment I would be lost without, besides my kettle and toaster. A Kenwood mixer would be up on my wish-list, but the Magimix is incredibly useful, easy to fling together, as well as wash and store. I use it for dressings, salsas, making purées and pulsing anything that needs to be broken down quickly.

Rachel Allen

Denis Cotter

One of the most popular celebrity chefs in Ireland and the UK, Ballymaloe-trained Rachel Allen is the author of four bestselling cookery books, which include Rachel’s Favourite Food at Home and Rachel’s Food for Living. My favourite gadget changes all the time. It might sound a little unusual, but at the moment, the one thing I’m using every day is a 4 mini-baking set, €25. Our daughter, Scarlet Lily, is almost three and it’s wonderful to bake cupcakes and other treats with her. We have so much fun together and it’s always good to get children to enjoy life in the kitchen. The bright red set has got a tray, rolling pin, mixing bowl and silicone moulds, and is really handy.

Denis Cotter, author of the brilliant Wild Garlic, Gooseberries and Me and the award-winning owner of Cork’s pioneering Café Paradiso, has transformed vegetarian cooking in Ireland. Really, the only thing I could never do without in a kitchen is a pair of sharp knives like 5 Henckels Cooks knife, €67.95, or a small paring one. A few days in a kitchen with blunt knives will result only in mangled fingers and the development of a wide vocabulary of swear words. Whereas sharp knives will give superior results, almost double your productivity – especially in a vegetarian kitchen, where there’s loads of chopping to be done – and encourage joyous singing. My range of gadgets is small, and most are disposable once I have a decent pair of knives. However, the first thing I’d move into a new kitchen would be the little electric spice grinder – aka coffee grinder. I use a lot of spices in my cooking and being able to grind up small batches of whole seeds every time means I am always working with better quality, flavour and freshness. Without those qualities in your ingredients, you’re a goal down from the start.

Catherine Fulvio

Paul Flynn

One of Ireland’s unsung food heroes, Paul Flynn is a chef’s chef, who had a classic training before making a name for himself as head chef at La Stampa, where he won the Egon Ronay Restaurant of the Year award. These days, you will find him cooking at The Tannery, his acclaimed Dungarvan restaurant and cookery school. I try to minimise the amount of washing up because life is just too short. One thing that’s thoroughly indispensible in my kitchen is my 6 handblender, €199.99. I use it for soups and sauces – whizzed in seconds – and all you have to do is rinse it. 82

Maga zine

Catherine Fulvio, who learned her first cookery lessons helping in her family’s farmhouse B&B, is an award-winning author, TV chef and proprietor of County Wicklow’s delightful Ballyknocken House & Cookery School. 7 My splatter guard, €16.95, is older than my children! It is the perfect kitchen accessory because of its daily usefulness. There is nothing worse than having to scrub down your best kitchen tiles and all work surfaces after sautéing a delicious filet steak or a full Irish on a Sunday morning. The splatter guard lets the steam escape so that the food crisps and caramelises nicely, but catches the oil splatters. It’s a thoroughly practical, affordable and useful gadget.

CLAUDIO DEL VECCHIO CHAIRMAN/CEO BROOKS BROTHERS Beloved by presidents and celebrities for centuries, from Abraham Lincoln and Fred Astaire to George Clooney and David Beckham, iconic brand Brooks Brothers is renowned for its crisp, button-down shirts and flawless tailoring. In 2001, it was rescued by a very hands-on Claudio Del Vecchio, owner of Casual Corner, who knew the brand had to revisit its Ivy League heritage. Think soft cashmeres and sartorial suits. He also successfully signed up cutting-edge designer Thom Browne to develop the Black Fleece collection that today boasts its own stand-alone spinoff in New York’s trendy West Village. With over 200 stores across the US and expansion into new markets from Seoul to London, the US retail giant has just opened a concession in Arnotts. Amanda Cochrane caught up with the charming and softly-spoken Claudio Del Vecchio in New York to talk about his future plans for Ireland.

HOW DO YOU FIND WORKING WITH FAMOUS DESIGNERS? The original idea was that we would work with guest designers on rotation, but the relationship with Thom Browne has worked very well, so we have no plans to change. It’s been a very positive experience. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN A CONCESSION IN IRELAND? It’s always a matter of finding the right location, and Arnotts gives us an opportunity to test the market in Ireland. It’s a good thing for Brooks Brothers.

DID YOU ALWAYS PLAN TO WORK IN THE WORLD OF FASHION? I grew up with the family business, which was an eyeglass factory WHERE DOES BROOKS BROTHERS SELL BEST OUTSIDE OF [a business that eventually became the market-leading Luxottica Group]. I loved being in the factory and thought I would be there for the THE US? Outside of the US, our best market is definitely Japan. rest of my life. WHICH CELEBRITIES DO YOU THINK HAVE A GREAT SENSE OF STYLE? We have many faces at Brooks Brothers. We dress HOW DID YOU MAKE THE MOVE INTO FASHION? everyone from Justin Bieber to George I was working with companies like Clooney – it’s a wide spectrum, but we Armani and other designers on some don’t pay anyone to wear our product. accessories [for LensCrafters, part of George Clooney represents our brand the Luxottica brand] and I discovered very well and lots of celebrities visit I had a passion for fashion. I have our stores. David Beckham came in the a natural understanding for the other day with his kids, but we don’t fashion side of the business. like to make a big deal out of it. SO HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE IN THE WORLD DO YOU BUYING BROOKS BROTHERS? FIND THE BEST SENSE OF STYLE? In 1982, I moved from Italy to the US New York has a great sense of style, but to head up Luxottica’s distribution it wasn’t always that way. Tokyo and arm. I was a frequent shopper at Seoul have a unique and individual sense of style – no two guys dress Brooks Brothers and felt the company wasn’t heading in the right the same way. Milan, Paris and London are more established, but direction. They were trying to attract a new customer and, in doing I’m not sure young designers are emerging from there anymore. It’s so, forgot their traditional one. Before the company came up for sale, very hard for young designers to be successful in established markets I approached them with the idea of a merger [with Casual Corner] unless they have good connections. WHERE DOES BROOKS BROTHERS’ DESIGN INSPIRATION COME FROM? We have 194 years’ worth of archives – we invented most of what are still the most popular styles today. We were the first, for example, to introduce ready-to-wear suits. 96
