What is Design? Perhaps we can look at this way, our lives are composed of elements that inspire us on a daily basis; this is what propels us to create. This inspiration subsequently demands for the materialization of moments and experiences, and ultimately is manifested through design...

HIGH RISE DUBAI RECONNECTING THE PEOPLE VERTICAL NEIGHBORHOODS

In a world where buildings have seem to stretch to the skies, it is important to understand the purpose of a building. Buildings are designed and built to serve the human user. Similarly, cities are there to serve the people. High rises seem to have been planted all over the cityscape, creating a disconnection between city, building, and neighborhood. The concept of this design is to recreate that connection. Connecting with the immediate context, the site creates a relationship with the cityscape. Moving into the building the focus was on developing a program that would reevaluate the copy paste dilemma that is relevant to the way high rises are designed. To avoid this repetitive design, the high rise would be designed programmatically including public space, commercial, residential, recreational and circulation; elements of neighborhoods. These elements would then be implemented vertically. The idea is that multiple neighborhoods be created within the form re-introducing the people to a sense of neighborhood within a building.

SITE ANALYSIS

Analyzing the site in plan provides an understanding of access to and from the site. Figure ground and relationship to other buildings within it›s context help determing buidling orientation , Also studying the site from a micro and macro level helped with the awareness of how to connect buidling to the cityscape.

VIGNETTES

Gathering and recreational spaces such as the roof top pool create an environment in which users of the building come together from different neighborhoods and unite, This creates a sense of pride in ones building and eliminating the disengagment of users with buildings and buidlings with cities.

The ground level connects the building to the other city public spaces. All becoming one and uniting the cityscape while grounding the building of vertical neighborhoods.

BLOCK PAVILION

DIFFUSED LIMITED AGGREGATION ADAPTABLE STRUCTURE

Metamorphosis , being the theme for the Design Village competition, the concept was derived by taking Diffused Limited Aggregation, the process by which particles undergoing a random walk due to Brownian motion cluster together to form aggregates of such particles. This in nature the in the path of lighting, coral, and the formation of crystals. Combined with a space filling polyhedron, and applying a set of rules designated by team members a structure begins to take form. Using sixty five blocks, that consisted of lazer cut masonite board and hand stitched with hemp twine and zip ties, as a kit of parts the design allows the user to build the pavilion as desired. The pavilion was displayed at the New School of Architecture and Design second year showcase gallery.

Assembly

Only a handfull of Platonic and Archimedean solids can be stacked together to fill space without leaving gaps. The Bisymmetric Hendecahedron is a solid with eleven faces (hendecaedron) that is a space-filling. However, it can only space fill if assembled in the correct manner, certain faces can only match with each other.

SECTIONS

A series of study models were created based on the set of rules. The rules were established based on how DLA works, four bisymmetric hendecahedrons were set as a base and a new ÂŤblockÂť was added til they all came together. Every single time a different structure was created. Due to the fact that this project was to be used at Design Village, the intent

was to create a structure that would stand on its own and could serve as a shelter. Once a design was settled upon a series of scale investigations was A

Early on studies were conducted to determine, size,

scale, and amount of blocks would be needed to create a substantial and adequately sized structure. This was done thru a series of 3D models that were documented in a series of progression diagrams, the end result was that in order to be the right size the number of ÂŤblocksÂť would have to be between 60-50. Once the project was presented at the competition, it served as a pavilion that was displayed at New School of Architecture and Design. This project was a great example of how investigations into concepts that occur in nature can abstractly be used into creating art and merging it with architecture to

Critical Analysis

Stress Reduction

Recreated Design

The Marine Corps has always prided themselves on their warrior like culture, a machine built for combat and war. Due to this culture that the Marines have cultivated, they are less prone to show weakness. As a result of this aura the Marines that have served overseas in battle are not seeking the attention they desperately need when it comes to matters of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Unfortunately, many combat vets resort to other escapes, in 2012 it is reported that more combat veterans on active duty were lost to suicide than actual combat. Architecture has the power to to create and produce spaces that evoke emotion and feelings. Regrettably, the architecture of the military has not taken advantage of the power it possesses, as a result veterans inhabit spaces and buildings that are counter productive to their health. This inpatient rehabilitation center begins to explore how to undo the past and take advantage of architecture›s ability to create invigorating spaces that are productive for our veterans.

Designed as a retreat for victims of PTSD, the rehab center provides varies types of counseling. Amenities include classrooms for educating guest about PTSD trauma and a gym. An auditorium allows for larger events produced and curated by the veteran residents of the center. A small pharmacy will house all medicationa and serve as a cafe. Nature components take advantage of the site, guest can escape to the garden and relax while taking in the view of the ocean, or they can sit and enjoy converation with other guest at the Birch Platoon park. The second level houses the majority of the treatment amenities related to treatement of PTSD and includes counseling spaces, music and art studios with lounges, both interior and exterior to allow for escapes. On the third level we find the living quarters, here we have the dorms, kitchen, and dining spaces and an exterior terrace that overlooks the ocean, overall the rehab center is a positive place that creates an atmosphere that is invigorating and allows for the healing process to begin.

VIGNETTES

Above: Birch Platoon Park is an escape where guest can relax, while having a view of the military base, part of the problem, The park was designed to resemble a military platoon, symbolic and nostalgic of their service Left: The main entrance is demarcated by a cove like condition and is covered, visitors could make entrance into building or continue into the center courtyard, where they could continue to Birch Platooon or venture out to the garden which cantilevers out to the garden.

Above: The cooridor that leads to the Birch Platoon park also allows access to the auditorium and gym. The walk is along a cooridor that is perforated in a pattern that would create a sense of openness yet private, while filtering light. Left: The center courtyard allows for escapes from the interior, and an opportunity to access the garden. It is treated with silver birch trees that reach out to the sky symbolic of reaching and striving for a higher sense of being and state of mind. While the open courtyard allows light to filter the interiors spaces.

This traditional track home was remodeled and redesigned to showcase a refined and modern feel while maintaining its original form. The bright clean white palette throughout creates a openness and airy flow, drawing inspiration from the coastal life near the water. This space still manages to expose the traditional feel by having kept elements of the coastal cottage style such as the shiplap ceiling and the wainscot. The addition of elegant materials such as the carrara marble and the intricate patterned tile enable the spaces through out the home to feel sophisticated and effortless.

WINGS N THINGS COMMERCIAL SAN DIEGO, CA

A popular staple in the San Diego area founded in 1982. Wings N Things is the place where sports, family and food all come together in design. Sports and food references are perfectly infused and illustrated throughout. The color palette was influenced by the dish served in this establishment, chicken wings. Materials such as the tiled walls throughout give an element of freshness and easy maintenace. While certain walls are highlighted by the one thing that brings people together football (besides food).
