“ But then, I saw love, hidden deeply in his eyes.” He turned and looked at me. One glance. One moment. And I knew I would spend the rest of my life with him. That was more than 22 years ago and for more than two decades and 4 kids later, I have been dancing through life with my Behrooz. We were kids when we met, Both of us were in college just getting ready to start our lives. One evening, my girlfriend called and asked me to join the group to go out to dinner in Laguna Beach. She had a little crush on a guy who was going to be there that evening and wanted her ‘crew’ with her. I remember being tired and wanting to stay home in my pajamas eating pizza and watching a romantic movie.
She insisted, so I got all dolled up and drove to Laguna beach. I was sitting in the lobby of the restaurant observing the group of my friends and the guys flirting and laughing, everyone was looking for someone to love and yet I yearned to be home sleeping. Just as I was deciding to bail and go home, the front door of the restaurant opened and a young man walked in. I can still remember that exact moment. He had not spoken a word, but he took my breath away. He spent the entire dinner sitting at the other side of the table talking to my friends. I don’t think he looked at me once. Following dinner everyone decided to go dancing and I never say no to a night of music. Once we settled into the dance club I noticed one of the gentlemen in the group kept looking at me.

I think he was visiting from Dubai. He ordered a bottle of champagne. Then flowers. At one point he leaned over and said ‘ I really like you.’ He grabbed my hand pulled me to the dance floor.
I started looking for the exit signs and prayed the song would end. As soon as it did, I quickly sat down looking for my purse and keys to leave. Just as I stood up to say good-bye and jet out the door, that same young man who walked through the front door of the restaurant, the one who took my breath away, was standing in front of me with his hand out and asked : Would you like to dance?’ I took his hand as he lead me to the dance floor. As we began to dance our eyes met and it was at that moment I knew I was dancing with the man who I was going to spend my life with. I was dancing with the man who was going to be the father to my children. This was the man who was going to dance with me for the rest of my life.

We got married 6 years later, brought four beautiful children into this world, Arshia, Arshan, Shyla and Shayden and now are dancing through life with them, albeit its much more loud and chaotic but I love every second of it. The past 22 years have been the best years of my life and also the most challenging. We have been through a lot together. We started with nothing and built everything we have today together, working hard and being humble and leading with love. We have made many mistakes, and have even wanted to walk away but when we face life’s challenges we turn up the music and hold onto each other and have learned to dance in the rain. To my Behrooz who has no idea that I am writing this story for Aroos Magazine. I love you. Thank you for asking me to dance with you. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for living life with me. Thank you for being in incredible father to our babies. I love growing old with you and look forward to dancing with you until the end ……
