Police Department Implements New Technology The Acworth Police Department is pleased to announce the addition of its newest piece of high tech equipment in efforts to better serve the community. With funds from a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, the police department has recently purchased and placed into use a License Plate Recognition System (LPR). This high tech equipment is Patrol Vehicle mounted and can read vehicle license plates and check them against a data base for stolen vehicles and other violations at rates up to 3600 per minute. In addition to stolen cars, this system will also assist officers with parking enforcement issues around the city, identification of suspended and revoked drivers and can also be used with drug interdiction, as well as in connection with AMBER alerts. Using standard technology, an officer might be able to check 150 plates a day, but with LPR technology that number increases dramatically. LPR systems have been used in Europe since the 1980s and more recently have been used here in the U.S. In areas where this technology has been implemented, Auto Theft rates and other crimes related to vehicles have dropped as much as 50%. The Acworth Police Department is extremely excited and fortunate to be able to have and place this system into use. This equipment will greatly enhance our officer’s abilities to enforce laws and continue to keep our community a safe place to work and live.

Payday Loan Collection Scam The police department has been receiving complaints from citizens that they have been receiving telephone calls from persons claiming to be with the United States Department of Justice Payday Loan Division. The caller claims that a debt is owed on a payday loan in an attempt to get you to pay off the debt. The caller may have personal information and threaten jail time if the loan is not paid. The caller will sometimes call the victim's place of employment also. Regardless of what information the caller may give you, this is a scam and the caller is trying to scare you into sending them money that you do not owe. If you receive one of these calls, please notify the police department or the Federal Trade Commission (1-877-FTC-HELP).

CNA program — 100% Pass Rate There are now 19 more Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) who list Chattahoochee Technical College (CTC) on their resumes. All of the students finishing the certificate program that is offered on the school’s Appalachian, Austell and North Metro campuses passed the national certification examination on the first try. “It rarely happens that all pass the first time. This indicates the CTC students are well prepared to care for the public in their capacity as CNA’s and can manage stressful situations. Testing is very stressful. The candidates do not know what skill they will be testing until they are called into the room. They must pass all critical criteria to pass the State Competency Exam” stated Dr. Linda Ferrick, CNA coordinator at CTC.

ONLY $20 TO ANYONE WHO NEEDS HELP BUT HAS NEVER BEEN TO A CHIROPRACTOR BEFORE (Or Hasn’t Been In A Long Time) Dear Friend, If you’ve ever thought about going to a chiropractor but you’ve hesitated because you weren’t sure it was right for you please read on… My name is Dr. Amy Valente. I would like to show my heartfelt thanks to the community by celebrating the Christmas season with the announcement of Community Health Week. It’s my way of saying THANK YOU to the people who have been so helpful and mean so much. I hope this will benefit you and yours. I have agreed to “give away” (to anyone who asks for it) $200 worth of my services for only $20. That’s right-$20. In the years that I have been practicing I have helped many people in the North Georgia area feel better and live healthier, more productive lives through chiropractic care. I would now like to introduce you to the many benefits my profession has to offer. For instance, chiropractic care may be able to help you if you are suffering from any of the following conditions. • • • • • • •
Low back pain Neck Pain Migraines Sciatica Herniated discs Degenerated discs Shoulder/arm pain And a whole host of other problems, ranging from TMJ to carpal tunnel. These symptoms can be caused whenever the vertebrae in your spine are out of alignment, because this “misalignment” directly affects your nervous system. Fortunately, if you are suffering from such problems or similar conditions right now, they may be relieved or eliminated by proper chiropractic treatment (commonly called “adjustments”). So if you’ve always wanted to “check out” chiropractic care and see what is in it for you, now is the best time because….. Right now $20 will get you all the services I normally charge my new patients $200 for! What does this include? Everything. Take a look at what you’ll get…. • An in-depth private consultation
about your health and well being. • A chiropractic spinal examination…. • A set of specialized X-rays to determine if a misalignment in your spine is causing your pain or symptoms…(NOTE: Nobody gives these kinds of X-rays FREE. They would usually cost $100)… • An analysis of your X-rays and spinal exam results so we can see what needs to be done to help. • Helpful literature that shows how your body works and why you experience pain… • Answers to all your most probing questions about chiropractic care and what it can do for you…. The appointment will not take long at all. And like I said, we normally charge $200 for this (most of which just covers the cost of the set of X-rays). But now, as a part of this one time offer, you can come in and find out for certain if you need chiropractic care and how it can help you eliminate the pain you are feeling. Before you come in, though, you’ll probably want to know a little bit about me. So let me tell you…. MEET THE DOCTOR Prior to obtaining my Doctor of Chiropractic Degree at Life University in Marietta, GA, I received my B.S. degree from Excelsior College. I am nationally and state board certified in Chiropractic and Physiotherapy. I am one of the few doctors in this area that performs specific Activator analysis technique for the treatment of degenerative discs, scoliosis, herniated discs just to name a few. I have happily donated my time to organizations such as MUST Ministries, YWCA (Domestic Violence Shelter for Women), and Ross Memorial. I am very proud to be a wife and mother of four boys and a member of Liberty Church in Marietta, GA. DOES CHIROPRACTIC REALLY WORK Absolutely! When you come in I’ll
provide you with studies that show why chiropractic is a preferred method of treatment. But what provides the best “proof” on how well chiropractic works is what our patients say about it. ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS AND BACK PAIN Although Chiropractic care has been an enormous help to me and my family for 30 years when I met the doctor’s at NLCC I was not currently under care. As I started getting adjusted again the relief was almost immediate! I was suffering from soreness, stiffness and sleepless nights. “Feeling better” affects everything in life and helps us cope with the daily stresses. I suppose I am most amazed by knowing that one’s spine has to do with every part of the body. God made us that way“fearfully & wonderfully made” (Ps.139) Your Friend- Pastor Ron Mobley TMJ & HEADACHES I was in a lot of pain when I started coming for my adjustments at NLCC. I suffered with pain in my jaw and severe headaches. Now that I have been receiving chiropractic care my pain has decreased tremendously and I don’t have to worry about constant headaches. I can walk my dog without pain and my posture has gotten better. My husband is also very pleased with my progress. I am thrilled at how quickly I have improved due to chiropractic care and I love the positive caring atmosphere they have in the office. Thank you- Denine Wolden KNEE PAIN/SLEEPLESSNESS The reason why I came into the office was because I was having knee pain and I was not sleeping very well at night. I am now getting 3-4 more hours of sleep at night and my knees have gotten a lot better. I interact more with my family and I can ride my bike with my granddaughter. I feel 100% better. The doctors and staff here at NLCC really do what they say and are very professional and friendly. Chiropractic care really works great! Thanks-Thomas Weems

SCOLIOSIS When I first came into the office I did not know the extent of my health issues. After the exam, the doctor told me I had a scoliosis that affected my health in many different ways. Chiropractic has helped me to restore my physical balance and as a dancer that is very important! I also had numbness in my hands and now I can take notes without my hand going numb. Since I have been getting adjusted I have more energy and my heartburn and circulation has improved! I am happy to say that chiropractic is easier than I expected and not as time consuming as I once thought. Thanks! Christine Pearce GUARANTEE OF GREAT SERVICE Obviously we can’t guarantee results. No one can. But there is one guarantee we can give you and that’s a guarantee to accept your case only if we truly feel we can help. LIMITED TIME OFFER Obviously, with an offer like this we can’t afford to do it for very long. So we’ve picked the dates of Dec. 1-15th. If you would like to take us up on our offer and see what chiropractic can do for you, all you have to do is call our office and set up an appointment. Call our 24 hour help line @ 678-574-5678 and tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Special Introductory Examination during Dec. 1-15th. I expect to get flooded with appointments for this event, so please call me as soon as possible to be sure that you don’t miss out. Thank you very much, and I look forward to helping you get rid of your pain so you can start living a healthier, more productive life. God bless. Sincerely, Dr. Amy Valente, D.C.

National Merit Students Congratulations to three North Cobb Christian School students who have been named Commended Students in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program. These seniors are Bobby Cork, Rachel Fox, and Davis Richardson. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. These Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2011 competition by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
For the second year, the Robotics Team at North Cobb Christian School (NCCS) has advanced to the BEST (Boosting Engineering Science and Technology) regional competition. Ben Carr is the lead sponsor of the Robotics Team. With over 80% of the team new to robotics, this victory demonstrates the hard work and time put into this club. The team was not just limited to the technologically savvy; baseball players soldered, football players coded and singers cut wheels. Thanks to their primary sponsor, Cobb EMC, they have been able to furnish and equip a new robotics lab in which to work along with their other sponsors, The Home Depot, Snap-On, CEC, Lovelass Technical and Robinson Industrial, providing helpful materials and necessary tools. Without this support, the team would not have been equipped for the season.

“A new generation encompassed by God” What if…
What if a group of young adults, unsatisfied with the status quo, were allowed to put together a worship experience that spoke to their generation in a unique and relevant way? The result would be Ambient.
chosen as the name because it embodies the meaning of Acts 17:27-28, which talks about how God “is not far from each one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being.”
Difference and diversity
Ambient is the name of the new worship experience at Northwest Christian Church and it is very different even from their contemporary Sunday morning worship services. Ambient, which will meet at 6 p.m. on Sunday nights beginning on January 16th, is geared toward those in their 20’s, but is definitely not limited to any age group. The planning team for Ambient believes diversity is what makes the family of God beautiful, so they wanted a diversity of all ages, ethnicities, and cultures to be reflected in their community as well.
What it all means
The word ambient means “the surrounding environment, encircling, or encompassing,” and was
So much more
Ambient isn’t a 90 minute service where you can be entertained and then go home unaffected until next week – it’s so much more than that. It’s dynamic, communal, interactive, unpredictable, and focused on partnering with God in the restoration of this broken world, whether it’s rescuing girls from sex slavery, helping genocide survivors in Rwanda, or feeding those in their community without enough food to eat. It’s evident that the presence of God will definitely be the environment that this community of believers live in.
What you’re looking for
God is moving in a powerful way and the Ambient community just wants to be a part of what he’s doing. They want to see lives transformed by the love of Christ – the lives of people across the street, across the globe, and their own lives as well. So if you’re looking for something more in this world than dead religion or hypocritical Christians and want to be a part of what God is doing to save this world, then I suggest you discover what Ambient is all about starting January 16th. 20

How to Remodel and Save $$$$ by Jeff Glover
I
your next remodel.
t seems that the housing market is still struggling on its road to recovery and more and more of my remodeling clients have decided to stay put. They have chosen to turn their current home into their dream home instead of going out and buying it. So, if you too have decided to stay put and upgrade your home and wait it out, let me give you some thoughts on how to maximize and stretch your dollar on
Besides being a good shopper and looking out for the deals, talk with your contractor about becoming involved in your remodel and putting in a little “sweat equity.” This is a great way to save money on home improvement projects and I encourage my clients to do this. However, if you have some knowledge in the construction process and want to take a project on for yourself and really enjoy the work, then by all means, GO FOR IT! But, if not, don’t talk yourself into it. If you work full time and think you can do it in the evenings after work, understand this; depending on the size of your project, this will soon become your second full time job. Now, for example, let’s say you have decided it is time to finally finish your basement. An easy way to save money is to handle the job site cleaning yourself instead of asking the contractor to do it. It is not the most glamorous, mind you, but still very important. A clean work area keeps workers safe, and helping out with the project lets you track what materials are used and monitor the progress. Also, as surplus materials appear, if any, check with your contractor to see if they are needed and set them aside in a safe place. That way the materials will be taken back in resale condition and will allow you to get your full refund, these can add up quickly. Depending on how large your project is, painting is also another great way to save money, especially since this can be a large ticket item. Whatever task you choose to take on, realize that your contractor will set the pace of your job. Be sure to stay within the time line so as not to push out your date of completion. If you are on a tight budget, it is important to let your contractor know that you want to tackle some things yourself. Ask the contractor to suggest ways that you can become more involved in your remodeling project. So be smart, be safe and know your limitations. o other time of year entices amateur singers of all calibers to burst into song than Christmas time. This tradition of singing songs, specifically about Christmas, began as Latin hymns in ancient Rome as early as the 4th century. What began as statements of theological doctrine expanded across Europe and developed with every language, tradition and musical influence popular of the time. Today, the concept of singing Christmas carols could range from visions of organ accompanied choirs to the best Bing Crosby fireside song to Alvin and the Chipmunks. Singing has been found to have many health related benefits that are both internal and external. The physical effort required to sing can improve lung capacity. The deep breathing that is learned by many singers improves the respiratory tubes and sinuses, in addition to increasing the amount of oxygen in the body that improves mental alertness amongst others. The division of the brain that is responsible for singing is different from the area that is related to speech. Studies done on an older population of persons including those with Alzheimer’s, concluded that singing improved the memory of these patients. Patients that sang with a group on a regular basis were noted to have an increase in their energy levels and mood and a decrease incidence of depression.

Depression and stress are noted to be the major causations of memory loss and both lessened with the act of singing. Singing causes the brain to produce endorphins a natural mood elevator, much to the same degree that eating chocolate does. Indicators of improved stress levels is noted by lower heart rates, higher levels of cortisol and higher levels of markers for improvement in the immune system. A joint Harvard and Yale study found that members of the population of Newhaven, Connecticut had increased their life expectancy through choral singing. The researchers concluded that this was because singing promoted a healthy heart and an improved mental state. External benefits of singing include strengthening the muscles of your torso and abdomen. A comparison of the aerobic expenditure required to project the voice with classical singing found that this intense physical workout produced the same effect as Pilates and core fitness training. This can result in an improvement of the posture but could lead to weight loss as well. Singing also gently exercises the muscles of your face that can decrease the development of certain wrinkles and helps to tone the face and neck. The voice itself was found to improve with a multi-disciplinary approach during the 1960s. Chiropractic Care and Sciatica

ith the holidays fast approaching, there is a lot to do. There are holiday supplies to find in the storage unit, or buy, or replace. Then, there is the entire decorating and planning extravaganza, not to mention the holiday parties to attend. It’s exhausting to even think about. With all the tasks that seem to occupy our time, we seem to forget about our bodies and then the aches and pains start to set in. One of the most common we see at our office is sciatic pain.

here is an exciting new Trane product we have available that will allow you to put control of your home in the palm of your hand and provide total comfort and total security from any remote location. The “LiNK” system allows you to monitor and remotely control the temperature and energy efficiency of your home, as well as controlling the door locks, security lights and even turning on cameras that show you what is happening in your home. Many different systems in your home can be controlled from your web enabled phone or laptop computer. Two hundred and thirty-one different systems can be connected to the LiNK system and all you need is an internet connection. Controlling and monitoring your homes heating and cooling system has many uses. I never know when I will get home on any given day, so a programmable thermostat is useless for my lifestyle. LiNK allow me to adjust my temperatures when I am on my way home so my comfort level is already where I like it before I get there. LiNK will send me an alert if my home gets too hot or too cold, possibly alerting me to a problem with my system. One of the most exciting aspects of the LiNK system you will enjoy the most is the ability to have wireless cameras pointed at your front door and throughout your home that will show you real time pictures of who just entered your home and what is actually taking place, even though you might be out of town. The LiNk system can be programmed to allow select people in your home at certain times and not others and keep a 90 day record of when and who came in and out. This could be very useful for cleaning services, exterminators etc. It would also be very handy to know when your teenagers come home and who was with them. I will occasionally get a call from my security company that I had an alarm go off and I do not know if it was a false alarm or a real emergency. So far, thank goodness, all have been false alarms, but the drive home to check it out is a very tense trip I would rather not have to make. LiNK would allow you to verify to the police that you have had a real break in and need them to actually respond. You can remotely turn off and on lighting and open and close your garage door in addition to many other uses. You can even program your system to work in concert when you arrive from work, push a button and the garage door will open, your entryways will light up, your security system will recognize you, and your front door will unlock. LiNK can have your favorite music playing for you when you get home and while you are away. LiNK can make sure the lawn sprinkler watered your

Sciatica is as tricky and deceptive as a sly magician. Sciatic pain often alters between severe and constant to mild and intermittent; can affect one leg, both, or switch from side to side; and it may even masquerade as low-back pain for months until more characteristic sciatic pain begins. But, fortunately, chiropractic sheds light on these sciatic “tricks.” Although its source may appear deceiving, chiropractors find that the root cause of sciatica is usually in the spine. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It runs from the pelvis through the hip area and buttocks and then courses down the back of each leg. The term “sciatica” refers to the inflammation of this nerve and the pain that radiates along its course. Sciatica may feel like a leg cramp or as numbness, burning or a pins-and-needles sensation. Sciatic pain can also be excruciatingly piercing or stabbing. In one study of patients with chronic pain, sciatica sufferers endured “significantly higher” pain scores and limitation in daily living activities than any other group. Although sciatic pain is generally in the legs, chiropractors want patients to understand that the root cause is often compression of the sciatic nerve root, which is the beginning of the sciatic nerve as it exits the spinal cord in the lower back. Nerve root compression is frequently the result of one of two conditions: vertebral subluxation (misalignment of the spinal bones) or sacroiliac subluxation (misalignment of the pelvic bones). When the spinal or pelvic bones are even slightly out of place, spinal movement is restricted, which in turn irritates the muscles, discs and the nerve root — causing pain. Other causes of sciatic nerve compression include herniated spinal discs and piriformis syndrome (inflammation of the piriformis muscle in the buttocks). Often, more than one of these four causes occurs simultaneously, so it is vital to identify and address all factors. The good news is that research shows that chiropractic care is effective at

presents from Santa.
rowing up, I could always count on two things at Christmas — my grandmother’s peanut brittle and her German Chocolate cake. While the threat of coal in my stocking was ever present, I was always guaranteed German Chocolate cake no matter how I acted. My grandmother only made these treats at Christmas, so I anticipated them as much as I did
Now that I’m an adult with my own family, I treasure the holiday foods that are as much a part of our Christmas tradition as anything else. My family always counts on my chicken and dumplin’s (my grandmother said they didn’t taste right if pronounced with a “g”), peanut brittle and sugar cookies. My husband’s, culinary contributions are white chocolatecovered roasted pecans and peppermint ice cream punch. He makes his pecans by melting 1 stick of butter in a baking sheet, then tossing 4 cups pecan halves with it and salt to taste. Bake at 350 for approximately 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Once the pecans are cool, drop several into melted white chocolate and put on wax paper to cool. The sweet/salty combination is wonderful! Over the years, I’ve made several different variations of my sugar cookies. Sometimes I substitute almond extract for the vanilla, or I will add extra flavors to it, such as chocolate chips, or orange juice and dried craisins. One trick I always do with my cookie dough is to press it into the bottom of a large ziptop bag, roll it up and put it into the freezer until firm. I can then either slice and bake, or cut pieces and then use my cookie cutters. This method is great if you need to make your dough ahead of time. It also ensures that you will always have snacks on hand when Christmas carolers show up and want something more than figgy pudding to go with their cocoa. Speaking of hot chocolate, it’s easy to jazz it up with more than just marshmallows or whipped cream. Place crushed peppermints or mint chocolate bits in the bottom of your cup, then add the hot cocoa and let sit a few minutes. Then stir and enjoy! No matter what food you cook this holiday season, take the time to enjoy the company of those you share them with. Merry Christmas everyone! iabetes is becoming an epidemic because of the obesity crisis in the United States. In fact, 17 million Americans suffer from diabetes. Of these people, one-third are unaware that they have the disease. Undiagnosed, diabetes can result in vision impairment; a frequent complication of both Type-1 and Type2 diabetes and blindness. Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults 20-74 years old. Other vision problems caused by diabetes include: vision changes, glaucoma, cataracts and retinopathy. An optometrist is an important member of your health care team – particularly if you have been diagnosed with diabetes. Type2 diabetes is associated with older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, medical history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, physical inactivity and race/ethnicity. The rising incidence of diabetes in the United States is a result of a dramatic increase in obesity, as well as the aging of the population. With a comprehensive eye examination, an optometrist can detect and diagnose retinal damage from diabetes and start you on the road to treatment for the disease. Early signs of diabetic retinopathy are leaking blood vessels, retinal swelling (macular edema) and deposits on the retina. Signs of other vascular diseases such as hypertension can be detected in this way as well. To help detect diabetic retinopathy, as well as other diseases, we are now able to offer the latest technology in eye exams – the Optomap™ Retinal Exam. The Optomap will produce the most comprehensive image of your retina and allow us to perform a more thorough exam than was previously possible. The result is that we can better prevent or reduce vision loss in our patients with a simple, quick and patient-friendly new exam. Dr. Dylan Reach is practice at Acworth Family Eyecare. The Top 10 Reasons Not To Plan For Retirement A different kind of Top Ten list
by Don Akridge, MBA, CPA, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ U.S. Marine Corps Veteran – Emory University Alumnus You probably read or hear about some “Top Ten” list nearly every day. But take a moment to read this one. This list is different, and probably not the kind of list you’d expect a Financial Advisor to write.
Reason #10: “I’m too busy”
I can’t tell you how often I hear this excuse. So many people want to plan for a better retirement, but they don’t have time. They think they’ll take care of it tomorrow, or the day after that … and before they know it, several years have gone by. The best advice I can give you is to stop procrastinating and start planning today.
Reason #9: “It’s too soon”
I don’t know how this happened, but many people have adopted the notion that you don’t have to start planning for your retirement until you’re almost there. This is totally incorrect. The truth is, the sooner you start planning, the better chance you stand of having the kind of retirement you want. It’s never too soon. Many people start planning in their early twenties!
Reason #8: “It’s too late”
If you’re already near or past your retirement eligibility date, you may think that whatever you’ve got is what you’re stuck with and it’s too late to do anything about it. Think again. If you’re unsure of what your options are, speak to a professional. Even if you’ve already retired, it’s important to consider how you’re receiving income and how long it will last. It’s never too late to revise your income distribution strategy.
Reason #7: “I don’t need to”
I’ve heard this excuse many times and it always baffles me. Many people think that because they’ve been diligent about contributing to a savings account, they’re all set. While saving for retirement is good, you also need a plan for income distribution once you enter retirement. Are you certain that what you’re saving will be enough? Have you considered your distribution plan? What about taxes? What about inflation? And are you sure your money will be properly invested? There may be other, better options for you and it may prove worthwhile to look into them.
Reason #6: “I don’t have enough money to get started”
This excuse seems marginal at first glance, but there is some truth behind it. You need to have money to save or invest money. However, unless your bills are exactly equal to or greater than your net income, you DO have enough to get started. Starting small is better than not starting at all, and if you plan well, you’ll eventually have more to work with.
Reason #5: “My finances are a mess”
This is all the more reason to seek out an advisor who can help you sort through and understand your assets. Perhaps you have a 401(k) from
42
a former employer that has not been rolled over, a couple of savings accounts, a trust from a deceased relative, some stocks that your parents bought in your name when you were younger … a circumstance like this can be confusing, but leaving it as it is won’t improve the situation. Consider speaking with an advisor who can look at your complete financial picture, help you to understand it, and help you to develop a plan to make your “financial mess” work for you.
Reason #4: “The government will take care of me”
The bottom line is this … there’s a chance Social Security may not be available when you retire, and even presuming it is, it may not be enough to provide your ideal retirement income. If you’re planning to retire on Social Security alone, I would advise you to create a back-up plan at the very least.
Reason #3: “Between my savings and my 401(k), I’ll be fine”
Saving for retirement without an income distribution plan can be a mistake. How will you use that money once you have it? And while you may think you’ll have everything you’re going to need, have you considered inflation? Taxes? And furthermore, some people are living past 90. Will your assets last that long? If you outlive your income, what then? It’s a good idea to look ahead and plan lifelong income.
Reason #2: “I don’t want to think about it”
Many people procrastinate simply because the thought of discussing financial matters (or growing old) is unappealing. I can certainly understand that. But consider this … if you bite the bullet now and put a firm plan in motion, you may not have to think about it again for quite some time.
Reason #1: “I don’t know how”
If you knew everything there was to know about financial planning, you’d probably be a financial advisor yourself. While it is possible to do everything on your own, that generally involves a great deal of research and a huge time commitment. If you’re putting off retirement planning because you don’t know how, consider speaking to a professional who does. These are just some of the reasons why people don’t plan for retirement … but these are reasons, and not excuses. If you have retirement goals you want to reach, I would recommend you speak to a qualified Financial Advisor and set up an action plan, the sooner the better. ituals and patterns are helpful. We can count on them. Some of us plan our calendars based on the sport seasons, while others use the school calendar as our primary calendar. Our weekly television viewing dominates many evening schedules (even with Tivo) as does tennis practice and soccer games. Then there is McDonald’s drive-through Monday night and Chick-fil-A drive-through on Thursday. I’m typing this on a Tuesday morning as my kitten crawls around my laptop, reminding me of her schedule, which says it is time to go outside and play. Tuesday is one of those days of recovery in our house, not just following the weekend but Mondays. It is the year of the teen and pre-teen schedule crash with two kids in two different schools on two different schedules. It is one of our biggest nights of passing back and forth and dinner for two, rather than four. It is the type of day where NOTHING is allowed to go wrong! I wonder if that was what Mary was thinking regarding the approach of her wedding — NOTHING was allowed to go wrong! There was certainly a schedule and routine in the little town of Nazareth in the middle east. Joseph, her fiancee, would have had his own hands full with work and planning for the care of his wife to be. NOTHING was allowed to go wrong! But... The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus (Luke 1:30-31 NASB).” The last person we plan to mess up our schedules is God. Oh sure, it is easy to cast blame on Him when our keys are lost or the traffic is going to make us late. It is precisely when we are demanding NOTHING happen to our plans, God steps in and allows the nothing we treasure to evaporate and replace it with SOMETHING. Oh, we did not imagine it to come our way. We certainly did not count on it as we calculated our days. We might even do all we can to prevent it, fight it, deny it and even kill it. All we are really doing is delaying the intervention of God into our tiny, pathetic, self-contained world we treasure so much. We live in days of doubt and worry. You and I cling and strive and grab hold of pretty ornaments and decorations and achievements. They are frail and fragile. The tighter you squeeze the more likely they are to shatter and leave you empty handed. But this is the time to remember God did enter in and

e’re self-centered, aren’t we? I mean, it’s incredibly difficult not to be consumed with ourselves most of the time. After all, we’re us. We live our lives, not others’. We look to fulfill our desires and needs much of the time, only looking to the needs of others when it’s convenient or when we can personally benefit from it. We strut our stuff, and believe we’re God’s gift to the world. What we fail to realize is how right we actually are. I’ve been participating in a small group study entitled “iMarriage,” that was authored by Andy Stanley. Essentially, the study focuses on the tension between our desires and our expectations as it pertains to the marriage relationship. But, truly, the principles in the study are relevant and applicable for relationships outside of marriage, not just between husband and wife. Perhaps the most profound message I have received through this study is what Andy said about how God uses us in relationships with others. He explains that God looks at us as a channel of His goodness, love, grace and mercy to others. When we accept Christ, we become pure and holy in His sight. That’s because He has washed away our sins, canceled our debts. In turn, we need to be loving, serving, and giving to others. Not because they deserve it. But, because God does that for us — even though we don’t deserve it! So, that certainly raises the bar on our role in each and every relationship we have with another human being. Basically, God has given us as a gift to another. That’s right — we are literally God’s gift to mankind. He has chosen us to bless other people. But, here’s the kicker — we must do it unconditionally. We cannot have strings attached. We cannot have ulterior motives. Sure, we can hope that by serving people and giving more that we’ll have a positive influence, but we cannot stop serving, giving, and loving if we never see the desired outcome. With it being Christmas, there’s really no better time to come to this realization: you need to give yourself away. And, don’t wait until you “feel like doing it” to do it. That’s the fatal error we make all too often. We hold back blessings because our heart just isn’t in it. But, as it has been said before, go ahead and do what is right, and the feeling will follow. We each have immeasurable influence in the lives of others. We have numerous opportunities each and every day to lighten someone’s load, offer an encouraging word, give selflessly of our

Home Automation,
I’d like to invite you to join me in doing something this holiday season. I’d like you to take a $20 bill and put it in your wallet or your pocket. Then, I’d like you to pray daily for someone who could really use that $20. And, sometime over the next week or two, I want you to give that money away, preferably to an individual that you encounter. Don’t worry about whether or not it’s the “right person.” When you give that $20 away, you are giving a gift. No strings. No stipulations. Don’t worry about how it will be spent. Do it joyfully. And, with humility — not pride — be confident in knowing that you are truly God’s gift to others. As Max Lucado once wrote, “God’s greatest gift is Himself.” And, this Christmas, He’d like nothing more than to use you to deliver that precious gift to someone else. C.A.
