NKURINGO ORPHANAGE
T
he Nkuringo Orphanage was established by a caring man named Mr. Kajubwami Arthur and first opened its doors on June 2, 2005. At the beginning there were only 10 children living there and the goal was to improve the life of these orphaned children through fundraising. As a result, the children were provided with gentle care, education, medical care and the basics for living such as soap and clothing. At AAS we totally understand the struggles that an average African has to deal with on a day-to-day basis because we have been there too. We are living the African Dream and want the same for other residents in Africa, no matter who they may be or where they may come from. We believe that when you’ve been presented with an opportunity and have continued to work hard through honest labour you should give that back to your fellow citizens. We are sponsoring 20 of the 68 children that belong to this orphanage to help them achieve a primary and secondary education. These youngsters are currently enrolled in a high-quality primary school in Kisoro and at Eden International School in Mbarara. We give back to the community wherever and however we can. We want others to have exposure to the same opportunities that led to our success and have set up projects for the orphanage that are income-generating. Visitors can purchase beautiful crafts and the income generated helps with expansion. There are now 9 members assuming administrative duties at the orphanage. We also extend support to our 8
neighbouring villages that include: Kirundo, Kirwa and Sub County Kisoro district. We offer our help with the utmost dignity and respect, to help our fellow neighbours lead a better life. On one of our safaris to Rwanda, we met children living at an orphanage that were deeply affected by the 1994 genocides. The children taught us about humility and gratitude. Everyone there was a contributor to our success in their own way starting with the teachers that gave us inspiration to the cleaning janitors that maintained the cleanliness of the school. We learn that everyone’s contribution is valuable and that all people need to be treated with respect. We are here because they were willing to sacrifice and do what was necessary to keep things running no matter what doubts or fears they may have had. We have a humbled philosophy when it comes to life. We believe that integrity and honesty are the most important qualities to have. Success only counts when you have earned it through honest work and caring for others. When we see the children we remind them that change can be slow and hard and it doesn’t necessarily occur all at once. The children are taught the values that come from the truth and the pride of doing an honest day’s labour that can lead to change.

THE AFRICAN CULTURE
A
frica is a vast continent with a number of different cultures living there. Not only do the cultures change from one part of the continent to the other but you’ll also find varying cultures within the individual countries. This is the continent where human life first appeared on the planet between 5 million and 8 million years ago. The vast majority of the inhabitants living here remain of indigenous origin. Across Africa the cultures can be quite diverse with people speaking different languages, practicing a wide range of religions, living in different types of dwellings and engaging in contrasting economic activities. Throughout history people have migrated to this continent to settle from all over the world. In particular, Arabs have flocked to Africa starting back in the seventh century. They crossed from the Middle East into North Africa and brought their Islamic religion along with them. Later on, in the 19th century, another great movement of Arabs moved into central and east Africa. Europeans first arrived in Africa, landing close to the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of the continent, during the middle of the 17th century. Later on, during the colonial period, more Europeans decided to make Africa their home, particularly in Algeria, Zimbabwe and South Africa. At the same time, many South Asians decided to come here as well. Their descendants, commonly called Indians, can be found for the most part in South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

It is wonderful place to visit with two amazing hot springs situated in a hot mineral swamp. For bird lovers, there’s no better place to sit than by these hot tubs since they attract a wide variety of shorebirds. As well, many animals use the spring as a source for their salt consumption. Semliki boasts more than 60 species of mammals such as leopards, buffaloes, mono monkeys, pygmy hippos, bush babies, water chevrotains, elephants, pygmy flying squirrels and civets. There are also nine different duiker species that call this park their home and this includes the bay duiker. It is located in the Albertine Rift Valley, just to the northwest of the Rwenzori Mountains at the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
