Israeli Film NIGHT
We love a great film that can entertain us, inspire us and help us learn about the world around us. Israeli Film Night, now in its 5th season, is made possible by the generous support of:
2nd Monday of the Month at 7:30 pm Free and Open to the Community
MAKTUB OPENING NIGHT: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12 Guy Amir and Hanan Savyon, the acclaimed writers and stars behind Israeli TV mega-hits such as Scarred, Asfur, and Ma Bakarish, play partners-in-crime in this hilarious, politically incorrect caper that is also one of Israel’s biggest box office hits of the year. Maktub means “fate,” and when these two small-time enforcers for an Israeli mob protection racket survive a bombing, their destiny irrevocably changes, and unexpectedly they wind up fulfilling the wishes of those who leave notes at Jerusalem’s sacred Western Wall.
PAST LIFE MONDAY, DECEMBER 10 In the fascinating and profoundly moving film from one of Israel's most acclaimed director's, Avi Nesher (The Wonders, The Matchmaker), two Israeli sisters delve into the dark mystery of their father's former life in Poland during the Second World War. Inspired by a true story, Past Life tracks the daring 1977 trans-European odyssey of two sisters - one an introverted ambitious classical music composer and the other a fiery tabloid journalist with a political bent. As they try to unravel the disturbing mystery that has shadowed their whole lives, they are confronted by tragic questions and realize that freedom from the shackles of the past requires painful sacrifices, as does the struggle to discover one's own unique voice. A familial detective story about family, secrets, and identity, Past Life will occupy thoughts and conversations long after the credits roll.
THE FAREWELL PARTY MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11 The Farewell Party tackles an extremely sensitive issue in a vibrant, humorous way. Well into their 70s, Yehezkel and his wife Levana are living contented lives inside a Jerusalem retirement home. But they are shocked when their dear friend Max falls prey to an irreversible illness. Looking to escape a slow, painful death, Max asks Yehezkel for help to end his suffering. A longtime amateur inventor, Yehezkel rises to the challenge by constructing a machine that will allow Max to self-administer a fatal dose of tranquilizers. Levana, however, believes that such a device is immoral, and expresses her passionate disapproval. But when Levana herself begins to face a serious health issue, Yehezkel finds that his feelings about his new contraption become increasingly complicated. Winner of 4 Ophir Awards (the Israeli Oscars), including Best Actor for Ze'ev Revach! 14 Ophir Nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actress.
KICKING OUT SHOSHANA DATE CHANGE: MONDAY, MARCH 4 In this farcical soccer romp best known as Gal Gadot’s last Israeli movie, she plays an unhappy mistress of a mafia boss. When Ami Shoshan, one of the star players on a Jerusalem soccer team gets caught flirting with Gadot, he quickly realizes she is the mistress of a big mafia boss. To punish Ami, the boss makes Ami confess at a press conference that he is gay. This brings him a certain amount of condemnation and taunts from some quarters, while he becomes a hero to others. In showing that it’s entirely possible to reconcile old traditions with new tolerance, Kicking Out Shoshana is not only funny but meaningful.
ETGAR KERET: BASED ON A TRUE STORY MONDAY, APRIL 8 This delightfully surrealistic documentary about the beloved Israeli writer and humorist, Etgar Keret, weaves together animation, live action, and interviews, and takes us deep into the psyche of Keret, a son of Holocaust survivors, whose fiction explores the absurdities of daily life. Keret, whose first name means “challenge” in Hebrew, lives up to his moniker, forcing us to see the complexities and humor in life’s pedestrian and horrifying moments. The film explores tragedies that shaped Keret as a writer, including the suicide of his friend during their Army service. The warm intimacy of Keret’s daily life, his simple apartment, the cafes of Tel Aviv and his loving relationship with his wife and son are effortlessly captured throughout. Particularly enjoyable are short animations of Keret’s most beloved stories. Conversations with his wife, childhood friends, and colleagues, including This American Life’s Ira Glass and writer Jonathan Safran Foer, flesh out this quirky portrait of a generous, irreverent and creative thinker.
