BBBS Offers Ongoing Programs
In the photo:The Youth Leadership team takes a break from painting at the volleyball courts for the Y’s Volleyball on the Boardwalk program. (Photo by Brittany Arsenault) By Cindy Floyd The Youth Leadership Program participants at the YMCA are developing important life skills that will assist them in the future. The group holds weekly meetings that focus on leadership skills and they also regularly host guest speakers. The program participants are also very active in the community by providing support for the Y and other community initiatives. The group has helped the Y with fundraising for the Y's Strong Kids Campaign, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to participate in Y programs. They have collected food donations for the food bank, wrapped presents for Christmas families, and assisted at the Camp Glenburn Clean-Up. To learn more about the Youth Leadership Program, contact the Y at 693-YMCA.
By Laurie Collins Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) believes that every child should have the opportunity to reach their full potential. To achieve this we offer one-to-one matches in the community, in schools, and in small group programs during the school year and the summer. BBBS provides well-screened and trained Volunteers/Staff who build healthy, safe relationships with children in the programs and Volunteers/Staff are supervised to make sure that child safety practices are followed. On top of this, we have a whole lot of fun planned over the summer for children involved with the agency. Our summer camps include: Science & Engineering, Kids ‘N’ Kops, Fun While You Wait and a Go Girls! Camp. For information about how to get your child involved, please contact us at 635-1145 or visit http://www.bigbrothersbigsisters. ca/saintjohn
Engaging Young In Leadership Programs
Youth SJ Information
Activities outside the home are important for children; they help build self-esteem and confidence, can help children do better in school and get along better with friends. Parents must make sure that the programs their kids attend are safe! There are a number of questions parents should ask including the following (from a list of 15 suggested by Youth SJ): • Does the organization have a screening process for staff/volunteers which includes a criminal record check, personal interview and reference checks? • Does the agency understand what healthy staff/volunteer and youth relationships are? • Do the organization’s staff/volunteers learn about abuse and what puts children at risk to be abused? For the full list of questions or help in choosing the right program for your child, contact a member of Youth SJ. This group of Young Leaders (15 -25) celebrated the completion of their “Engaging Young Women in Leadership Project” at the Saint John Volunteer Centre with coordinator Rachael Grant. This confident group of women committed over a year to basic governance training, project work experience, and mentoring phase; they are now ready to build in the community and to make a difference. The program was funded by Status of Women Canada. Congratulations from the Staff and Board of Directors of the Saint John Volunteer Centre.

Brandon Cramm Skateboard Winner
Every ONE’s Got A Story By Wendy BarronBelmore Margie was born in Saint John and raised on Belleview Avenue here in the Old North End. Margie married and raised her children in the Old North End. She speaks very fondly of her two daughters and two grandchildren. During my interview with Margie she brought me to tears about her heartache and days with her dying husband John.
By Christa Petts ONE Change is proud of one of our own, Brandon Cramm. Brandon has participated in many skate competitions and has won awards and prizes. He has been recognized by his school for his hard work and received a certificate for East Side Board Supply. On a good day Brandon enjoys a day at the skate park or a good game of skate with his friends. Brandon is a great role model to the other youth by ensuring that he is wearing his helmet and safety gear.
Margie got through those sad times and moved on to become a Prayer Warrior through RiverCross Church. Margie claimed her biggest challenge was trying to be accepted as she grew up and lived in poverty. Margie’s fondest memory of the early years of the North End was helping her mother take care of the 100 hens and ducks that they raised. She was one of 14 siblings. Her favorite quote is “take care of yourself, eh?”
Brandon is now recording some of his skate tricks to make a video for YouTube.
Chefs! By Wendy Barron-Belmore The school year is closing which means our CHEFS! Program is winding down and we had great time. We had two five week sessions where the students from Lorne School were able to attend. Basic cooking skills were taught along with healthy recipes. The kids enjoyed cooking the different types of recipes. I believe if you ask the students what was their favorite part about the class, the response would be EATING WHAT WE COOKED.
Thanks, Margie, for being here until you meet your love beyond the moon.
OLD NORTH END Days Soon it will be time to celebrate our wonderful community. August 12: Teddy Bear Picnic will be held in Victoria Square from 1 3pm. August 13: Bike Rally will be held in Shamrock Park from 1 - 3pm. August 14: Movie in the Park will be held Victoria Square at Dusk around 9pm. Bring blankets to sit on. August 15: Street Dance. Location to be announced. The time will be from 8 - 10pm. Fit & Fun For Girls
By Jill Roberts, Nurse at Market Place Wellness Centre and ROE program Facilitator Ms. Mittelholtz’s grade 5 class at St Patrick’s Elementary School has been a fun place to be during the 2013/2014 school year. The boys and girls have been taking part in the “Roots of Empathy” program and welcoming Baby Noah, his mom Alicia and dad Carlin to visit their classroom. At the heart of this program is a neighbourhood infant and his parents who visit the classroom at least nine times over the school year. A trained instructor coaches students to observe the baby’s development and to label the baby’s feelings. The baby is the “Teacher” and helps children to identify and think about their own feelings and the feelings of others. The children sing to Baby Noah, observe his growth and development and discuss topics that include infant safety, communication and crying. The class even authored a book of personalized nursery rhymes for “their” Baby Noah. Thank you to Alicia and Carlin for sharing Noah with all of us!
By Krista Turnbull, Community Schools Coordinator, St. Patrick’s School On Saturday, May 3, some of the Fit & Fun For Girls group made their way on the Kids on the Go bus to the Kids’ Airport Run! What an exciting adventure for our girls to experience what an official run is like. It was a beautiful day for a run and they all sported their new St. Pat’s team jackets. Special thanks to Jill Roberts who meets with us every week and took time out of her weekend to join in the fun.

SJLE Is Celebating 30 Years
Support The Salvation Army
By Dayna Lutes This year, The Saint John Learning Exchange (SJLE) celebrates 30 years serving the community through education, work services and support for adults. We want to celebrate our work and impact on the community with a fun-filled event in the heart of the Waterloo Village on Friday, June 13, 2014. To celebrate this milestone we will be revitalizing a garden space, painting a mural and having a healthy BBQ in the Waterloo Village area over the noon hour. Learning Exchange learners (past and present), neighborhood groups, community partners and residents are all invited to join us in this celebration!
Pictured Above: Brooklyn Raynes’ centre with councillors Brittany Pye and Linnea Dean By Shelly McCready, Community Ministries Coordinator. 634-1633 Once again The Salvation Army Saint John is pleased to be able to take 50 children, aged 7 - 12 years, to camp in beautiful Nova Scotia for a fun filled week of adventure, completely free of charge. Celebrating Mark Cook
Scotian Glen, situated on the banks of Sutherland's River, offers cozy cabins, swimming pool, playground, camp fires, good food, crafts, games, friends and lots of individual attention from experienced staff. Working together we can make a difference! The Waterloo Village Association continues to meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 148 Waterloo St. (Coverdale Centre for Women) from 12-1 pm. If you are interested in getting involved in your neighbourhood contact Penni Eisenhauer at commorg.penni@gmail. com or Donna McKee at 696-0196.
By Donna McKee I am doing this story on a youth in my neighbourhood, named Mark Cook. Mark has been living in the Courtenay bay area for eight years, and when he started high school he started running into some problems which caused him to drop out several times. This year is a whole different story for Mark: he is in grade 11, he goes full time every day, never skips and he is also involved in the co-op program which he does at Giant Tiger. Mark has great support from his family, neighbours and a best friend that keeps pushing him every day to achieve his goal, which is to finish high school. And as a reward for all his hard work and great effort Mark is receiving an award that is just new this year called the Turn Around Achievement Award. This is offered to students that have had struggles in school but turned things around. This will be presented to him at the Lily Lake Pavilion . Way to go Mark, I have every bit of faith in you that you will finish school and move onto a big bright future.
Planting The Pumpkin Garden By Donna McKee Courtenay Bay Tenants Association will be planting a pumpkin garden on Saturday, May 24. This garden is for the children and youth aged 0-18 years in the neighbourhood. They will plant the pumpkin seed themselves and take ownership of the garden. The garden will have two captains from the neighbourhood and it will be their responsibility to monitor and make sure there is no damage done to the garden. The pumpkins will grow until October and will be carved at the Neighbourhood Halloween Party.

St Pat’s Bowl For BBBS
At last month’s Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake, we were fortunate to have PALS partners from JDI, Scotiabank and Bay Ferries bowling. In addition, our PALS at Saint John Energy did Wii bowling at work. Special thanks to all these folks for their dedication in raising money for such a worthwhile cause that St. Pat’s directly benefits from. Every year we have in-school mentors who are matched with students at our school. Students benefit greatly from the weekly hour of one-on-one time spent with their special friend at school. Some like to cook, make crafts, play in the gym, or computer room. Our PALS at Bay Ferries are shown taking on a Gilligan’s Island theme for their costumes. A great deal of fun was had at the event and thanks to everyone for taking part.
SJB-KE Sistema Students By Julie Pugsley, Community Schools Coordinator, St. John the Baptist - King Edward We are thrilled to have a group of students from SJB-KE involved in the after-school program Sistema. It Takes A Community By Caitlin Corkum, Community Schools, PALS Coordinator, Centennial School Centennial School has many people investing their time into the future of our students. Students recently learned about engineering, firefighting, the Military and Navy, hospitality and tourism, being a mechanic, and the many careers at Port Saint John through a career fair hosted by our PSSC with tours through Hampton Inn and Suites Hotel, and tours with Port Saint John. During our third March Break Camp with Mariner Partners, students took a hands on approach to learning about oceans, marine life, and the many jobs related to the ocean, even taking a trip to the Huntsman Marine Science Centre! Our students have had an incredible time learning about the endless possibilities for their future and it has been wonderful to see them excited about all the things they want to do when they grow up! Thank you to everyone who has invested in our students, your support is greatly appreciated.
St. Pat’s PALS At Saint John Energy
Last month a group of grade five girls made their way to see their PALS at Saint John Energy. The afternoon was a fun-filled one with a visit through their headquarters, a stop in the CEO’s office, a great time in their amazing gym. We even tried our work out in complete safety gear with our goggles, hard hats and vests on. The highlight of the day was certainly our ride in the bucket of the line truck with one of the linemen. We even got amazing SWAG from our PALS to take home. Special thanks to our amazing PALS at Saint John Energy and to Marta and Sherry for planning this great visit.
SJB-KE Fundraising By Julie Pugsley, Community Schools Coordinator, St. John the Baptist - King Edward St. John the Baptist – King Edward School is currently coordinating a Fundraising Dinner and Auction to take place on June 4, in the school’s gymnasium. This will be a fun evening featuring a dinner catered by Thandi Restaurant and friends of the South End Lions Club. The goal of the evening is to raise funds for SJB-KE School. Our school will use the funds raised during this event to subsidize the cost of enrichment programs, special events, guest speakers and field trip costs. These opportunities provide valuable learning experiences outside the classroom.

Protect Your Head - Wear A Helmet
By Jill Roberts Just a few more weeks and school will be out for the summer, which means that kids will be out and about riding bikes and skateboarding at the new skateboard park beside the Carleton Community Centre. Make sure that your child has the right size helmet, that it fits properly and that they are wearing it. The helmet should sit on top of the head and should not move sideways, or up and down. The straps should be buckled snugly, but not too tight. You should be able to put one finger between the strap and the chin. The straps should form a V under the ears when buckled. The rim of the helmet should be two finger widths above the eyebrows. Please slow down and watch for children playing and for children on bicycles. You can also stop in at the Market Place Wellness Centre any weekday if you would like to have your helmet checked. Remember that damaged or dented helmets need to be replaced.

By Caitlin Corkum, Community Schools, PALS Coordinator, Centennial School We were very fortunate to have the chance to transform our school gym into a space of pride and unity. With the support of the ArtSmart Grant and Lachlan Grant, a local artist, we transformed our gym into a swarm of bees, our school mascot.
HWSF - Teen Who Care Awards
Lachlan set the scene creating a beautiful backdrop of trees, hives, and animals and supported the students as they created their traditional black and yellow bees and bees painted in the students likeness. Our students had an awesome time working with Lachlan creating their bees and our grade 5 students especially enjoyed the project as they were able to leave a piece of them behind for years to come! Stop by the school and see our masterpiece, the students love to show it off! By Monica Vautour Grade 8 students Emily Esson and Alex Firlotte were recent recipients of the TRC “Teens Who Care Award”. The students were presented with the awards on Apr 29, at a ceremony hosted by the TRC Executive Director, June Breau-Nason at the Lily Lake Pavilion. The “Teens Who Care” awards are presented to teens who demonstrate leadership and compassion in their community. Alex and Emily are both well known for their high level of commitment and involvement in both academic and extracurricular activities. The school recognizes the high level of citizenship that they bring to school each day and are extremely proud of both Alex and Emily.

We are now gearing up for our summer program and are always looking for new youth to join the fun. If you are a youth ages 12 to 18 years old come check us out and ask for a tour of our awesome Drop In facility. By Krista Turnbull, Community Schools Coordinator, St. Patrick’s School Mrs. Griffin’s grade 2 class recently made some spring birds to share with the folks at Bobby’s House. It was explained to the children that families whose loved ones are living at Bobby’s Hospice experience some very sad days and that their beautiful colourful birds may put a smile on their faces, if only briefly. The children will soon deliver their birds to our neighbours

SJB-KE Fundraising
By Julie Pugsley, Community Schools Coordinator, St. John the Baptist - King Edward School St.
By: Julie Pugsley, Community Schools Coordinator, St. John the Baptist - King Edward Kittana, a student at SJB-KE school, received a Turn-Around Achievement Award from the district; an award presented to students who have demonstrated perseverance, commitment and effort in “turning around” their lives. Something amazing happened this past year and Kittana realized that she has a lot to offer. She started to participate and work diligently in every class and is now one of our top academic students. Her art is amazing and she has become a top athlete. In her spare time she likes to box and loves to read and write – this helps her express what angers her. This young lady has it all together now. She is an independent thinker who is fun to talk to and is always offering to help. We are so proud of Kittana.
Tickets are $25 per person and the event will feature a wonderful buffet meal, entertainment and auction tables. For more information, to purchase tickets, or to donate an item for our auction, please contact Julie at (506) 658-2213 or by email at Julie.pugsley@nbed.nb.ca. We hope to see you there!

On June 8, The Port Of Saint John Is Your Playground
Port Saint John’s fourth annual Community Day will bring thousands of locals down to the waterfront for a day of fun and fundraising on June 8th. This year’s event, sponsored by Irving Oil, raises funds for PALS (Partners Assisting Local Schools), an organization providing children in priority neighbourhoods with the tools they need to learn. “PALS makes education more accessible to local children, especially those in need. We are firm believers in the power of education and strengthening our community from an early age. That’s why we’re supporting PALS for the second year in a row,” said Jim Quinn, president and CEO of Port Saint John. This year, Community Day is the first day of Port Days, an annual business networking and economic development event hosted by the Port. Community, Connections, and Commerce are the guiding themes for this year’s event.
We are thrilled that PALS has been chosen as the recipient of the funds raised during Port Days. It is promising to be a fun-filled day for all and we can’t wait to take part,” Deborah Fisher, PALS co-ordinator said. “All moneys raised will go directly to participating PALS schools to address student needs and to supplement programs and activities that support student learning.” When Community Day arrives, it will be impossible not to see and hear the excitement. The Marco Polo and Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminals will be filled with displays and entertainment, while the parking lots will be filled with games, treats and activities. Cotton candy and barbecued hot dogs are on the menu, with proceeds supporting PALS. Activities are free of charge, with the exception of the barbecue and snack station which will be cash only. Local acts entertaining the crowd that day include Fredericton funky musician Stephen Lewis and the BIG Band of One and Tomato/Tomato. The InterAction School of Performing Arts will bedoing live theatre and some princesses will be making a magical appearance for photos. There will be bouncy castles, airbrush face painting, carnival games and multicultural displays. CFB Gagetown will be on site with LAV rides, equipment displays and camouflage-style face painting. The tugboats from Atlantic Towing will be doing a water show in the harbour. Community Day is also a learning opportunity. Aquila Tours will be offering trolley rides throughout the Port for people to learn more about what goes on behind the gates. The tour will span the east and west sides of the Port. “Community Day is a chance for citizens in Saint John to support a great cause and get to know the Port better. Our doors are open to the community and we’ll be welcoming people for fun, a bite to eat and an opportunity to learn more about what we do. We can’t wait to see everyone,” Quinn said. To learn more about Community Day, visit Port Saint John on Facebook.

ONE Build Provides Opportunities
By Mary Beth Watt Have you always thought about taking up a trade but you didn’t know where to begin? The ONE BUILD is a 22-week pilot project designed to train participants in carpentry skills. Administered by ONE Change and funded by the Government of New Brunswick’s Department of Post Secondary Education and Training, the program offers workplace essential skills training and an introductory skills building trades program. This is followed by 12 weeks of paid onthe-job training. Currently, eight young men and women are well on their way to becoming apprentices and obtaining permanent employment. Matching enthusiastic young people to employers in our community is a truly worthwhile endeavor! Page 13

Around the Block would like to apoligize for errors in Issue 34. The two stories below were published with the wrong pictures. Here are the correct stories and pictures for you enjoyment once again!
Millidgeville Community Centre Volunteer Janice Patchell has been volunteering with the Millidgeville Community Centre for over three years. Janice dedicates 40 hours a week making sure everything is running smoothly at the Centre. You can often find Janice volunteering for the evening programs and events as well. Janice hardly ever misses a day, claiming “she has to be there for her kids". The children truly enjoy and appreciate Janice and when absent they always miss her. Thanks to all the dedicated volunteers at the Y. You have truly helped to build a healthy community.
(Photo Coutesy Brittany Arsenault)
HWSF Celebrates Volunteers
Volunteering At The Y Hannah Koven has been volunteering at the YMCA Child Care Centre since June, 2012, and she currently volunteers three mornings a week. Hannah was a coop student at the YMCA before becoming a dedicated volunteer. She takes “her job” very seriously and looks forward to coming in each week. The Y has provided Hannah with a place to belong and she always (Photo Coutesy Brittany Arsenault) has a smile for everyone. She is very helpful with the children and the staff appreciate all the support she provides.
Above are three volunteers of the month for Crescent Valley for April. During this past month Julie Jeffrey, Vanessa MacKinnon, Rhonda Kinney (who are three teachers at HWSF School) have gone out of their way and worked above and beyond the call of duty to include parents in their classrooms. They have put on special demonstrations of work in a cafe style to include our school community. The parents all attended and the smiles on the students’ faces were heart-warming. Creating opportunities like this take a lot of work, time and energy that is beyond the regular role of a teacher. Missing from the photo is Pat Adams, who spent one entire day cleaning out all the storage and garbage from HWSF School, and Wayne Delong, who has been helping out every day while we've been short staffed.

UCSN 20th Anniversary
By Marc Gosselin On Tuesday May 20, Saint John business man, Gerry Pond was presented with the Wolf Blass Lifetime Achievement Award at the Startup Canada Atlantic Awards in Halifax in recognition of his leadership and for supporting the startup ecosystem in region.
By Marc Gosselin The Urban Core Support Network in Saint John celebrated its 20th anniversary on May 22. The organization is a partnership of people and organizations working to reduce poverty in their community. The organization represents community agencies, individuals living in poverty, churches, businesses and government departments. They focus on public awareness, develop strategies and provide support. One program that the UCSN runs is called POWER UP and has graduated 185 women.
One comment made at the event was that the influence Pond has on the Maritimes is too large to measure, whether it be through mentorship, serving on boards or simply caring about the individuals.
Congratulations to Brenda Murphy for her leadership and guidance for the past 20 years.

Grant For Healthy Breakfast
The Crescent Valley Resource Centre (CVRC) recently received a $2,550 Community Food Action grant from the NB Department of Healthy & Inclusive Communities for the Centre’s Healthy Start Breakfast program. Pictured Above: Janelle Flanagan ( the BEST instructor on the left) and Samantha Smith(right) (Photo Coutesy Dayna Lutes) Attending the Learning Exchange was an opportunity that changed my life. Being involved in the BEST Program helped me to realize that with motivation and determination I am capable of great things. When I first came to the Learning Exchange, I had no dreams for a future because I truly did not feel like I would ever be good at school. After a few months of coming to the BEST Program (basic essential skills program) I found that I was learning more than I ever thought possible. The teacher was there to help me and stuck with me every step of the way. As my time in the program came to an end, I left not only knowing more, but also viewing life more positively. I’ve learned how much potential I really have and I find myself looking back on my first days admiring how far I have come. College is now in my nearfuture and I believe I can do anything I put my mind to.
