Earth Day is a great opportunity to do some exploring off the beaten path in our beautiful Tri-state area. We are fortunate to have a wide variety of wildlife, extreme variations in terrain and hidden treasures just around many canyons’ bend here. There are innumerable outdoor places to explore, however, most of them don’t show up on a Google search, so take note! Here are some great places with relatively easy access by car to get you started. Like any outdoor activity in the desert, be prepared, take extra water, be aware of your surroundings and know your limits! GRAPEVINE CANYON – Grapevine Canyon is an unbelievably majestic place in the shadow of Spirit Mountain (just up the hill from Laughlin, Nevada) along Nevada Highway 163. You can pretty much see it from anywhere in our valley and wouldn’t even know it’s there. Named for the wild grapevines which border a natural spring which flows from the highest peaks before going underground near the parking area at the bottom of the canyon, the place has long been sacred to residents of our valley (as seen in the many petroglyphs on rocks at the canyon’s mouth). Hiking up the canyon is challenging and involves scrambling over large rocks, following unmaintained footpaths through thick brush and walking in ankle to knee-deep water when the stream is flowing well. Like any canyon, don’t attempt a hike here when thunderstorms are threatening, as flash floods are a possibility. The views are well worth it, if you decide to hike up to the waterfalls at the top of the canyon. CHRISTMAS TREE PASS – Just up the dirt road from Grapevine Canyon is another unique and interesting place called Christmas Tree Pass. Like it’s name suggests this is the top of the ridgeline between CalNevAri and Lake Mohave. Spoiler alert: many of the juniper trees in the campground area and decorated like Christmas trees. There are great views from this elevation and it’s an interesting place to visit, however vehicle access can be limited due to rough road conditions. THE TOPOCK MARSH & HAVASU NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE – If you’re looking for the opportunity to take a less-challenging walk on maintained gravel roads, the Topock Marsh at South Dike is a great place to see tons of wildlife including many migratory birds. There’s a pull-out along Highway 95 between Topock and Golden Shores (Route 66) approximately 4 miles from the Topock Marina Resort/ Interstate 40. Parking is somewhat limited, but usually not crowded. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service there are 318 documented species of birds that nest here, including many rare and endangered species. I recommend going on U.S. FWS website at www.fws.gov/refuge/havasu/ for more information about the area or contacting their office in Needles, California for guided tour dates if you want to really learn about the marshlands. MITCHELL CAVERNS/HOLE IN THE WALL – Just 45 minutes west of Needles at the northwestern end of Essex Road is Mitchell Caverns (a trio of limestone caves) and Hole in the Wall campground. Unfortunately, California’s budget crisis has forced the caves to close and they don’t currently offer tours, but Hole in the Wall is another awesome place to hike with a moderately challenging trail down a canyon to view a natural window that’s been carved through the canyon wall by erosion. Watch for wildlife and enjoy the metal ring ladder to assist climbing up and down the more difficult areas. It’s at high elevation so it’s almost 20 degrees cooler than the river valley most of the time. The Hualapai Mountain peaks (over 100 miles in the distance) are visible from Mitchell Caverns area. TOPOCK GORGE – If you have a boat and are looking to explore on the water. Gas up and head to Havasu via the Topock Gorge. The Colorado River has carved its way through some beautiful cliffs. Cut the engine and float down and you might see some big horn sheep, wild burros and other wildlife coming down for a drink in the early morning or evening. There are sandbars to stop and relax on and the occasional sandy beach, but don’t make the trip on a holiday weekend if you’re looking for peace and quiet. Canoe and kayakers can make the trip in one day from Topock to Castle Rock (upper end of Lake Havasu) but should plan ahead for transportation, be aware of boats and pack plenty of food and water. If you float all the way to the bottom end of the Gorge at Lake Havasu, look for the petroglyphs on the Arizona side at Picture Rock. There are many more places to explore, but most don’t have names and definitely don’t have trails. If you decide to go exploring the desert and mountains around us, enjoy and but also take precautions. Watch for rattlesnakes, take water with you and make sure someone knows where you are going and when you should return, just in case. This year try something new, go somewhere you’ve never been before and let our local wilderness take your breath away! Photo credit: Brenda Ellis
