Spices and Spirits Make Summer Sips Shine (BPT) - Sweet iced tea and sangria are as much hallmarks of summer as baseball and barbecues. Cocktails are a great way to cool off when temperatures climb, or they can help heat up any celebration. If you're looking to add some fresh excitement to seasonal beverages, spices, spirits and fun presentations can make summer sips shine. Here are tricks to help make your summer cocktails unique. Color your cocktails - Summer is bursting with color, from lush flowers and foliage to brighter hues in clothes and even the rainbow shades of children's ice pops. Let the bounty of colors inspire your summer cocktails. Create cheer with bright greens by muddling basil or mint in the clear spirit of your choice. Fire up your guests with brilliant reds courtesy of fresh summer tomato juice. Liquefied watermelon makes any cocktail pretty pink, while crushed raspberries or blueberries add a rich, textured appeal. Spice it up - Whether you want to add a zing of heat to the coolness of a cocktail, or balance the sweetness of a mixed drink, spices and herbs are a great way to layer flavors in beverages. Herbs such as basil and mint are staples for summer cocktails, but experimenting with other spices and seasonings can yield some memorable combinations. The heat of chipotle salt can be the perfect foil for sweet, fruit-based beverages. Cardamom adds an exotic flare to traditional cocktails like Moscow Mules, while traditional iced tea gets an Asian treatment with the addition of Five Spice Powder. Try this spice- and spirit-filled summer cocktail from Simply Organic, producers of premium-quality USDA certified organic spices and seasonings: Watermelon Margarita with Chipotle Salt Rim What's cooler than watermelon on a sultry summer afternoon? Kicking up the heat with smoky chipotle salt, that's what! Ingredients: 4 cups frozen watermelon chunks 1/2 cup silver tequila 1/4 cup lime juice (about 3 to 4 limes, juiced) 2 tablespoons cane sugar 2 tablespoons sea salt 1/2 teaspoon Simply Organic Chipotle Powder Directions: In a blender, combine watermelon, tequila, lime juice and cane sugar. Blend until smooth. On a small plate, combine salt and chipotle powder. Wet the rims of the glasses with a piece of watermelon or water, then dip them in chipotle salt. Serve immediately. With tears in his eyes, he thanked me for wearing the shirt that displayed a message emblazoned across the American flag “It wasn’t earned…to be burned.” It was 1994, and Bill Clinton was the president of the United States. Flag burning had become the newest form of protest and it was being sensationalized by extensive media coverage. For those who understood the price of freedom, the act was sheer ignorance and this WWII veteran brought that sharply into perspective. Having just exited Harrah’s after an evening of gaming, an elderly lady had boldly approached me and requested that I wait while she fetched her husband to come and see my shirt. Having just recently witnessed another newsflash of flag-burning anti-patriotism, I waited apprehensively. It was at that moment that I saw an older gentleman hobbling toward me while relying heavily upon his cane. A proud smile was displayed on his face and he offered an outstretched hand. “I just want to thank you for wearing that shirt,” he said. “Too many people are unaware of the heroism and sacrifice that was made by so many and it pains me to see the symbol of our country disrespected by those who don’t have a clue as to what it is like to watch your friends and fellow soldiers die in front of your very eyes; I saw my best friend get shot and killed within minutes of reaching the beachhead in Normandy, along with hundreds of other young soldiers. We were all terrified but we knew we had a job to do and it was an important job. Too many people have forgotten, or are ignorant of the high cost that my generation willingly paid. I remember the pride that we all felt in knowing that we were serving our country and then our shock when we realized that most of us would not likely survive. For as long as I live, I will never forget that day in 1944, and I hope to God that this country never forgets.” His grip was still firm in spite of his age as he shook my hand warmly; it was obvious that the memories were still clearly fresh in his mind as the emotions swept over his face. I wondered how many nights he had tossed and turned with those D-Day images burned into his brain. We live in an amazing country with one of the highest price tags in the world. Every American knows of at least one citizen, or family member, who gave of their time and often their lives so that we could be free. Here’s wishing you and yours a safe and happy Fourth of July and may we never forget!

Respecting the Stars & Stripes: American Flag Etiquette Hoisting and lowering of the flag * The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously. * The flag of the United States of America is saluted, or acknowledged by placing a hand over your heart, as it is hoisted and lowered. * When lowered, the flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water or merchandise. Manner of displaying the flag * The Flag Code states it is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. * When a patriotic effect is desired, the

flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. * The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed. * The flag should be displayed vertically, whether indoors or out, and suspended so that its folds fall free as though the flag were staffed. * When displayed in a window of a home or a place of business, the flag should be displayed in the same way; that is, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street. Storing and disposing of the flag * The Flag Code does not require any

specific method of storage, however, over time it has become tradition to fold the flag into a triangular shape like that of a threecorner hat, with only the blue union showing. * When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner. The American Legion frequently conducts flag retirement ceremonies, often on Flag Day, June 14.
