By Kim Eddy My love affair with running began five years ago when I included a “Couch to 5K” program as a last ditch effort to get in shape. Under the advice of my physician, I began intervals of walking combined with 60-second bursts of running, followed by more walking. In the beginning, I was really hesitant because I was heavier than ever and my energy levels were virtually nonexistent. The first few days were a little challenging, but after two weeks I knew I had found my fitness niche! If you think for a second that it is because I used to be one of those “athletic types” you could not be more wrong. I despised PE in school and made it a habit to never participate in any type of sports activity without the threat of a failing grade. So, needless to say, no one is more surprised than me to have fallen in love with the sport of running and all of its consequent benefits. Some people will tell you that the human body is not designed for long-distance, frequent running, however the evidence proves otherwise. Running is probably the first tool that early man used to ensure his own survival. The barefoot runners of Africa, South America and Central America bear witness to the natural agility, balance and innate cushioning of the unimpeded human foot and although injuries do occur, they are often the result of improper techniques or plain old overuse. Even the tendency to overdo is a testament to the habit-forming benefits of running: good sleep, relaxation, regularity, elevated mood, healthier eating, increased agility, weight control, etc. In plain English, running is good stuff! Mohave Valley is home to a unique set of amateur and elitist runners. Every once in a while it is possible to catch a glimpse of these fit humans in their natural habitat. The TriState area, unique for its majestic views and crystal-clear skies, offers a perfect backdrop for running enthusiasts and can surpass even the most luxurious of gym memberships. Spectacular sunrises and sunsets make exercising out in nature a glorious and indefinable pleasure. The combination of nature with an activity that boosts our body’s natural endorphins can only be described as bliss! To feel the morning air glancing lightly upon bare arms and legs is a joy that is unique to our beautiful desert climate, and night-running is a delight that has to be experienced to be described! There is nothing that can compare to running alongside our spectacular Colorado River while the sun is setting and birds and rabbits are in full view scampering about the many running trails that exist within our beloved desert oasis. In short, running has become a life-changing addition to my fitness routine, and I am in better shape now than I was in my thirties. I ran my first half-marathon (13.1 miles) at the age of 55, and I was able to prove to myself that I am capable of much more than I had previously thought possible. There are a variety of free programs on the internet to help you get started, and if running is not a possibility, walking programs are a viable alternative.
