Venice Biennale Pavilion ARCH341 - Construction
Recalling the origins of Pacific architecture, the design for the New Zealand Pavilion at the Venice Biennale draws from an indigenous tradition of shelter - the upturned canoe. Located on the promenade adjacent to the Laguna Veneta, the pavilion appears to have been brought ashore from a long journey and a distant land. While referencing the construction techniques of early New Zealand pioneers, the pavilion also features a kinetic roof that inverts itself to either display or contain the exhibition within.
Restless City Tomb ARCH341 - Construction
Drawing together elements of Wellington’s built environment with its rugged south coast, the tomb design transposes urban construction techniques to Owhiro Bay and reinterprets them to reflect the site. The arrangement of the tile system used in the tomb design embodies the natural, albeit altered, elements of the site - the verticality of its cliffs, the horizontality of its terraces, and the diagonal lines of its greywacke strata. The colour and texture of the tiles also references their environs.
City Gallery Entrance ARCI411 - Design
Playing with the ideas of past, present and future, as conceptualised in John Hejduk’s Bye House, an experimental method of photography was explored. This involved overlaying sequential over-exposed photographs to create a series of seemingly context-less and disorienting images, which captured the movement of people through Wellington’s Civic Square. The design explores this concept further and recreates the qualities of the process images through the use of mirrors, cameras and projectors.
Adelaide Road Mixed-Use ARCI412 - Design
Located in a sort of border between the city, its suburbs and town belt, the design responds to and integrates with its environs, providing a mix of uses which reference, reinterpret and mimic, in a lighthearted manner, the qualities of the area’s historic architecture and urban environment. The composition of design elements aims to create a sense of community and interaction between the numerous uses and users of the two adjacent buildings, while also aligning with the Wellington City Council’s Adelaide Road Framework.

Masters Thesis
The thesis examines the urban and architectural design and the subsequent redevelopment, both private and state-initiated, of post-war suburban state housing in New Zealand. Through analysis of existing literature, case study fieldwork, and redevelopment examples, the thesis proposes design strategies for the regeneration of post-war suburban state housing in New Zealand, which are examined through a specific design case study. The design case study articulates the potential of regeneration to address a variety of issues, while acknowledging the original investment in post-war suburban state housing. The thesis concludes that while state housing may never again signify in every sense the ‘very heart of the New Zealand dream,’ through regeneration it can, once again, be a certain benchmark for housing generally.
