WEEKEND @ PORTO
PORTO This is one of Europe’s oldest tourist destinations. Its wealth of monumental and artistic heritage, Port Wine, open-air leisure spaces and cultural life are just some of the reasons to visit this city. Porto’s Historical Centre has been a World Cultural Heritage Site since 1996. The city unfolds along the river bank and the sea shore, to reveal charming vistas, inviting esplanades and all the pleasures of the outdoors, framed by its green spaces. Setting out to discover Porto means bumping into surprise after surprise. Whilst maintaining its welcoming and conservative nature, the city is, at the same time, contemporary and creative. This can be seen in its streets, its architectures and its monuments, its museums, its leisure spaces, its esplanades and its shopping areas which run from the traditional to the modern and exclusive. Icons such as “Torre dos Clérigos“, “Serralves“ and “Casa da Música“ stand witness to a mature urban space, but one that is in constant movement. Events enliven the annual cultural and sporting calendars, culminating in “São João“, the city’s very own Feast. At night, Porto turns into a new and different city, with entertainment and leisure opportunities that cater to all tastes and excitement that bubbles up to fill the streets with energy and cheerfulness. The city is well located geographically and is able to count on a modern transport and communications network. Getting to know Porto might mean letting yourself be taken round by someone who knows the city and suggests a visit, or venturing out to discover everything that this guide proposes plus everything else that that your trip surprises you with. But there’s more to it! Go to www.visitporto.travel using the QR Codes and shortlinks that you will find on the different themes!
Give yourself up to the city, because it’s waiting for you!

Tripas à Moda do Porto
Contemporary cuisine
Francesinha
Gastronomy http://short.visitporto.travel/gastronomia Porto’s gastronomy is a mirror of its cultural diversity. There are several linked stories; several legends told from generation to generation, which today complete the traditions of the townsfolk. Among the most famous ones, the typical dishes from Porto are characterized both by its incomparable taste and the uniqueness of its making. Tripas à Moda do Porto (Porto’s Tripe) Dish that named the townspeople: “Tripeiros” (Tripe People). Legend has it that, when in the 15th century the Infante D. Henrique left from Porto to conquer Ceuta, the people from Porto, full of selflessness, gave all the meat to the troops and were left just with the guts and tripe (tripas). But the city’s irreverence allowed dissipating such adversity: the guts and tripe were cooked in a stew and thus this tasty typical dish appeared. Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá (Gomes de Sá’s Way Codfish) “João, if you change anything it will not be accomplished”, said Gomes de Sá when handling the
original receipt to his friend, in the late 19th century. With a special touch and almost the same ingredients with which he made codfish pastries, to the delight of his friends, this Porto’s gastronomy lover eternalized the way of preparing this flavorous and original codfish dish. Francesinha It was in 1953 that Daniel da Silva, combining the concept of some French snacks and adding a spicy sauce of his own making, created this delicatessen, giving it such a name in honour of the “spiciest women” he knew, the French. The sauce covering the meat and sausage sandwich is actually the secret for this tempting whim. A true delight this city offers, and that can be tasted in most of the city’s restaurants and cafés. Contemporary cuisine It is not the traditional that defines the boundaries for Porto’s cuisine. The city is also a shop window for exquisite quality Chefs, some internationally renowned, which place it in the cutting edge of the modern cuisine. Do not miss the chance to try it; no doubt you’ll be surprised!

Port Wine http://short.visitporto.travel/vinhoporto Famous and unique, Port Wine is a fortified wine produced exclusively in the Douro Region and aged in cellars. Originally it was transported down the river on the traditional Rabelo boats, replicas of which can be seen next to the Luís I bridge. This wine stands out from ordinary wines thanks to its huge range of varieties, with an incomparable richness and intensity of aroma, a long finish, both on the nose and on the palate, and a high level of alcohol content (generally between 19 and 22% by volume). The Port and Douro Wine Institute is the body responsible for certifying and supervising all “Porto” Origin wines. Its headquarters houses a multifunctional area for receptions, laboratories, tastings, visits and wine sales. The history of this precious nectar is revealed on a guided visit to the famous Port Wine Cellars or
the Port Wine Museum where numerous exhibits document the city’s commercial history and its relationship with the world-renowned wine. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to taste a glass of Port in a wine shop, a shop offering wine tastings and purchase your wine of choice. The flavours of Porto are fully brought to life in the restaurants known as the Ambassadors of Port Wine, where the wine is carefully chosen to accompany their culinary offerings. Porto asserted itself as an important trade entrepot from early times. The money from the trade and collection of taxes and rates on wine left its traces on the urban landscape. The “Urban Wine Route” stands as a new suggestion for exploring the city of Porto. Travel this route and find the places and buildings that make Porto a city of wine.

Baixa (City centre) http://short.visitporto.travel/baixa Porto’s Baixa lies at the heart of the city, surrounds its historic centre and is where businesses and services were traditionally concentrated. Although some services have moved out to more modern areas and some shops to the big shopping centres, it is in this central zone that you will find a range of activities in an area which you can easily traverse on foot but which is also served by metro, buses and the tram. Here you will find the city’s civic centre, along the axis of the Avenida dos Aliados, with the city hall at the top end and it is here that cultural, sporting and leisure
events all take place. These include concerts, themed fairs and even rallies that unite large numbers of locals and any visitors in town. It is in the city centre that you will find the great traditional shopping streets like Rua de Santa Catarina, the traditional (BolhĂŁo) and alternative markets and important monuments including civic buildings, churches and museums, some of which are clad, or decorated inside, in the type of magnificent tile panels that can be admired at various points around the city. different architectural styles, from the Neoclassical to Art Nouveau, amongst which the Livraria Lello stands out, one of the three most beautiful bookshops in the world. In this neighbourhood a lot of traditional restaurants, cafés and bars, like Majestic, have survived and, today, eating places proliferate, with all sorts of cuisine on offer. Daytime and nightlife entertainment options, catering to all tastes and at all times of the day and night, also thrive here, filling the streets and turning the city’s central area into an enormous stage where the city puts itself on show.
There are a number of concert halls in the city centre which, in addition to their heritage value, also contribute to a varied calendar throughout the year. They are complemented by the events and cultural offerings of this area, from the concentration of art galleries in the Miguel Bombarda quarter to the street entertainment found at spots like the Praça Parada Leitão, the Praça D. Filipa de Lencastre and the Praça D. João I, amongst many others. With its vast range of accommodation options, the Baixa harbours a thousand hidden delights and an intense experience that deserves to be shared.

Nightlife http://short.visitporto.travel/noite At night, we like to have a good time in good company, and Porto offers just the right places for this. From the small ‘tasca’ to the highly-refined restaurant, for traditional cooking or signature cuisine, Porto serves up a huge platter of flavours and ambiences, capable of satisfying the most demanding of tastes, from the more traditional to the boldest offerings, for young people of all ages, afterhours included. Porto serves increasingly as a stage for the animated nightlife of the various bars, cafés, discos and concert halls that have sprung up around the city to rub shoulders with the places well-known for the quality of the service they offer, the ideal place for a relaxed conversation or a dance floor, more usual at the “zona industrial do Porto” (Porto’s industrial area). There are places which are welcoming and intimate, or more modern ones, with innovative and open-minded concepts, spaces with spaces within, where an assortment of cultures and arts live side-by-side, showing off the creativity and irreverence of the city’s
young creators. There are places with open-air spaces, art galleries, shops, stages for the theatre and presentations and cool spaces, with alternative sound and retro ambience. In the city centre, old warehouses, townhouses and historic buildings have been restored and transformed into highly original settings featuring live music or top DJs from the national and international music scene, particularly in the areas around Carmo, Clérigos and Passos Manuel. In the historical centre Porto’s cultural life is now shaken up by the brand new Hard Club, two steps away from the well-known Ribeira. Along the city’s waterfronts, terraces and other entertainment opportunities are just inviting you to savour a delicious meal, stop for a relaxing drink or enjoy a lively night looking out over the Douro and the Atlantic, with an open-air stroll as a different kind of option. Night seems to never end in Porto! Try it!

São João http://short.visitporto.travel/saojoao Throughout the month of June Porto offers a varied programme of São João celebrations. The highlight of the festivities is the Night of São João, from the 23rd to the 24th of June, when the city gets dressed up and the streets are filled with colour and scents, joy and high spirits. The Itinerary of the Sacred and the Profane illuminates the tradition, retelling the story of this great feast, and the São João Programme, carefully prepared and revamped each year, embraces all those activities that make June such a special month. In the Churches and Chapels, and particularly at this time, visitors can tour the altars dedicated to the saint and admire the artistic representations conjured up by renowned national and international artists. In the streets, the ‘cascatas’ (tableau), unique in Portugal, call the attention of passers-by to a tradition that involves the representation, in miniature, of scenes from around the city and customs from times gone by. They include houses, paths traced out in sand and moss, clay figurines, painted in lively colours, of people going about their daily business, working at their professions, many of which have now disappeared, and animals that, these days, are rarely seen inside the city. The most famous of these is the cascata das Fontaínhas. The festival programme has space for competitive activities too, such as the now traditional regatta of ‘rabelo’ (port wine) boats which runs over a 1.5 km course from Foz do Douro to the Luís I Bridge. There are also activities along the riverside and more competition in the form of the São João race and the contests for best cascata, shop window, ‘rusga’ (romp) and folk dance celebrating São João. For this event the streets are crammed with ornaments
and festive lighting, snack stalls, open-air dances and amusements so that the people can celebrate a truly popular São João in a spirit of revelry, conviviality, friendship and joy. The night of the 23rd of June is the most jubilant of the year. Crowds of people come out onto the streets to celebrate this patron saint of amours. In the ‘Baixa’ area the streets ring out with the cries of the sellers of the traditional basil plants, carnations, lemon verbena, “leeks” and the modern hammers that are used to dole out friendly whacks on the head to passers-by and which spread like wildfire throughout the city from early on in the day, acting as harbingers of the fun that is coming later on. The São João bonfires are set alight in the streets, by groups of neighbours and friends who prove their bravery by jumping right over the top of them. On the Feast night or on the day of São João, people eat ‘caldo verde’ soup with cornbread, mutton, lamb or grilled sardines, pepper salad and, for dessert, egg and milk custard or São João cake, deservedly washed down by a delicious Port Wine. The traditional São João balloons, made out of paper and brightly coloured, are carefully launched into the sky, providing an unparalleled spectacle of hundreds of ascending points of light. At midnight on the 23rd of June, there are fireworks, or São João’s fire, on the river. The banks of the Douro fill up with thousands of spectators who have come to watch the biggest show of the year, bursting with light, colour and emotion. The night of São João comes to a close at Foz do Douro, with people rowing out towards the sea until the dawn breaks. Come and have fun with us. Porto awaits you!

Shopping http://short.visitporto.travel/compras Porto is known for its extensive shopping opportunities which bring shoppers in from the suburbs and outlying regions. Are you looking for traditional products - gastronomy, clothes, arts and crafts - and do you like to do your shopping outdoors, browsing through the city streets? Porto’s got it! In the city centre, the streets are thronged with shoppers visiting traditional stores, as are parts of Boavista too. Many old shops have been smart enough to keep up their traditional appearance and offer visitors the chance to try out products from times gone by, but which are still manufactured with all the same care and whose distinguished taste is all the better brought out by personalised service and high level of quality. The gourmet opportunities, the curious antiquarian booksellers, antique dealers and art galleries will satisfy even the most demanding of shoppers. Popping in to shop after shop as you take in the city, stopping for a savoury snack or spending a little time with your friends is always a pleasure. Are you looking for international brands and a range of products? Porto’s got it! Along the Avenida da Boavista, and in Foz, you will find some of the best known international brand stores, with their select and exclusive offer. Are you looking for a shopping centre with everything in one place? Porto’s got it! As an alternative to shopping outdoors, the city can also
offer a number of shopping centres, located in the city’s central area mentioned above, in Boavista and in the city’s growth areas, such as the easternmost zone of the famous Dragão Stadium. In the outlying areas of the city there are a number of large-scale retail centres where you can buy all sorts of products, find numerous brands and shop to suit all budgets. There are also good transport links from the city centre. Are you looking for something different that appeals to the imagination and is in good taste? Porto’s got it! Everyday new shopping opportunities are born, from the second-hand store in which the dedicated owner has breathed new life to a product, preserving it in its original form or dressing it up in more modern clothes, to the one-off products turned out by the new wave creative industries. In different parts of the city, these new ventures have sprung up and then coalesced into a number of areas that deserve special mention, such as the Miguel Bombarda quarter, the area around Clérigos, Carmo and Rua do Almada, Rua Mousinho da Silveira, Rua das Flores and Rua do Infante D. Henrique. These days, it is a good idea to look carefully where you are going as you are likely to stumble across something curious and refreshingly new. The festive seasons and the sales add a little extra spice to the existing commercial bustle, but Porto is able to satisfy your shopping needs all year round. So you already know; everything you are looking for, Porto’s got it. If Porto hasn’t got it... it doesn’t exist!

River and Sea - Outdoors http://short.visitporto.travel/rioemar Porto is a riverside city, bathed by the Atlantic, as far north as Matosinhos, and by the Douro River, from Freixo to Foz. The river passes under 6 architecturally fascinating bridges that can be admired while on a Bridges Cruise. Freixo Marina and the Ribeira docks welcome leisure and tourist boats and both up and down the water course there are multiple opportunities to practise water sports such as sailing, rowing, canoeing, diving, surfing and water-skiing. From next to the São Francisco church, a tram sets off and follows the river on its journey down to the Passeio Alegre Gardens. The same trip can be made by bicycle, using the cycleway that stretches from the Luís I bridge to the City Park, passing on the way the forts of São João Baptista and São Francisco Xavier. The Atlantic welcomes us with its pleasant beaches, some of them flying the Blue Flag, bordered by appetising terraces and a seafront promenade that is
as sought after as the shopping opportunities along the Avenida Brasil. The Praça de Gonçalves Zarco leads to Sea Life Porto, to the City Park, the largest urban park in the country. Here you will find the Sports Town where you can practise dance, play tennis, football, volleyball and hockey, as well as the Transparent Building where regular entertainment activities take place. Whether in mid-summer or on the coldest winter’s day, a walk along the Porto waterfront is always a renewed pleasure. In addition to all this, you can also enjoy the diversity of botanical species to be found in the Botanical Garden as well as in other gardens around the city, have a little fun in their children playgrounds, such as the Covelo Park, the Pasteleira Park and the Palácio de Cristal Gardens, and let yourself be enveloped in the green magic which, in many cases, serves as a magnificent panoramic window onto the city and all that surrounds it.

Serralves and Casa da Música http://short.visitporto.travel/arquitectura On a par with the historic legacy for which it is well-known, Porto also explores its identity in terms of sophistication and contemporariness to which, undeniably, the Serralves Foundation and the Casa da Música contribute as both architectural icons and distinctive cultural offerings. The Serralves Foundation, a cultural institution which seeks to foster the public’s awareness of contemporary art and the environment, hosts various spaces with differing functions: the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Park,
the Auditorium and the Serralves House. The Casa da Música, designed by Rem Koolhaas, is the first building built in Portugal to be dedicated entirely to music and is fully involved in both the city’s process of urban renewal and a network of cultural programmes on both the metropolitan and world stages. Both institutions develop innovative and far-reaching cultural projects, offering exhibitions, guided visits, spectacles of music, dance and performance,

In the area where they are located, Boavista, which is where a large part of Porto’s service industry is concentrated, there are a number of other buildings of overt architectural interest as well as a number of exclusive shopping zones. Throughout this part of the city, you can sample national, international and
signature cuisine as well as find accommodation to suit all tastes. Bordering on this neighbourhood are the areas of Campo Alegre, Palácio de Cristal and Miguel Bombarda - known for its art galleries - which, together, offer a wide range of cultural activities, green spaces, alternative shopping, restaurants and bars and so represent a wonderful opportunity to get to know Porto a little off the beaten track.

Sightseeing Tours http://short.visitporto.travel/circuitos Come what may, whatever the weather and whoever you come with, there is always a way to get to know the ins and outs of the city: wandering around Porto and stopping to visit something that catches your eye, enjoying magnificent views over the city and the local region and feeling the life pulse through the veins of this city centre. The pedestrian walks are the best way of getting to know the city’s more traditional streets. They let you discover picturesque corners, capture details and curiosities, admire great artistic and architectural symbols and experience characteristic flavours, bringing you into contact with the people and their generous welcome. On a Segway or a bicycle, enjoy the pleasure of being close to the city on a mode of transport that allows you to explore the historic centre or broaden your trip out along the Porto riverside and seafront, from the Ribeira to the City Park. You can also trundle through a good part of the historical centre and the city centre on a mini-train, comfortably taking in many of the more emblematic sights in these important city areas. The hundred year old trams run through Porto’s historical centre on a tourist route that allows visitors to take in the monuments, differently styled churches, museums, theatres and picturesque historical cafés, weaving a rich tapestry combining the wealth of sights along the
way with the opportunity to travel in such a traditional vehicle. A trip on the open-top buses allows you to get to know all the loveliest spots in the city of Porto. You can hop off and visit something and then hop back on again to enjoy the panorama of monuments, viewpoints, parks, beaches and the riverside. Seen from the river, the city of Porto rises in all its architectural glory. It is a glittering backdrop, unique in the world; one that a Bridges cruise effortlessly unveils. However, Douro cruises are not just confined to the city limits, the river is there to be explored on various types of boats, on voyages that last from half a day to eight days. Luxury sail and motor yachts are another way to discover the secrets of this city and its river. For those who like to do something new, a trip up the Douro on a semi-inflatable offers a different kind of experience, linking the Mouth of the Douro with the Freixo Palace and allowing you to stop and enjoy the most fascinating spots along the way. There is also jet boating, offering not just the tourist experience but adventure as well, with its spectacular emotions and moments for you to both live and record. Finally, surrender to the beauty of the ‘unvanquished’ city and enjoy Porto from the air on an unforgettable helicopter trip. Get all the information at www.portotours.com.
