Description In the case of a tropical island in the Caribbean susceptible to hurricanes and tropical storms, it involves the capacity to resist and to man-

age in events of environmental crisis and their aftermath. The lessons learned from Hurricane María suggest that the new construction in Puerto Rico must not only be sustainable, but must also be resilient. The design of the Model Home for the CBDG-R3 Program is aimed at providing a comfortable, secure, resilient, and sustainable home for Puerto Rican family. Thev house features, the familiar components

and spaces of a single-family detached house - front porch, living and dining room area, kitchen, bedrooms, and bathrooms. In addition, it includes a covered carport with a utility closet that houses the laundry area. The homeowner will be able to choose from alternative facade treatments and the color scheme of a number of exterior and interior finishes from options and combinations provided. The design, materials and construction methods proposed ensure a construction process which is both time and cost efficient. More importantly, considerations

of sustainability are weaved as an integral part of the construction process itself. Finally, the design of the model home will comply with all applicable Puerto Rico and Federal codes and standards.

Team Andrés Mignucci, Luis Peña, Viviana Lasalle, Rosalyn Román, William Collazo, Antonio López, Héctor Camacho Description The project for the Luis Muñoz Marín Park rehabilitates and modernizes the existing facilities located south of the Piedras river, and increases its programmatic diversity. The park resembles the configuration of a complex plant cell. At the periphery, the cell wall is delimited

by the expressways and the motorway. The project breaks the old set of gates and walls opening and making the park visible to the city

and it’s people. A new central promenade serves as a spine joining the main entrance with the new programmatic elements. Inside, the cell membrane creates a second strain composed of new volumes in exposed concrete that delimit the liquid and green spaces. The living

organisms contained within these membranes make up landmarks that, through splashes of water emanating from monumental towers, play

parks, elevated walks, and the legendary tree planted by Muñoz Marín, revitalize the public space and conform new places of encounter and

social integration. Connections with the rest of the city, such as the new bridge over the Piedras river that connects to the second phase of the park, the restoration of the old telespherical system and integration to the public transport system of the city, state the promise of urban transformations that can only occur from public actions and social agreements.

Description The Puerto Rico Manatee Conservation Center is a research, education, rescue, and rehabilitation center established in 2009 in Puerto

Rico in order to help endangered manatees to survive from extinction. The initial phase designed between 2010 and 2012 by the architect Andrés Mignucci consisted of the development of a series of laboratories, three of rehabilitation tanks with their respective pump room

and filters. This new project consisted of the extension of existing facilities in search of more space and the need of the client to create two new areas; the aquaponic farm and new zone for quarantine tanks. Having a site area with limited space, it was proposed to develop both areas on two existing parking areas. This allowed the access and connection of both zones with the existing one.

Description The project consists of the design of a new public space that will host the Center for Contemporary Culture as well as commercial, office and cultural spaces to be built between the Hiram Bithorn Stadium and the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in the Municipal Sports Complex

in Hato Rey. Until 2010, the Luis Muñoz Marín Park, under the National Parks Company, and the Municipal Sports Complex of San Juan Municipality were disconnected and divided by large surface parking and a continuous gate. The new public space opens the extraordinary opportunity to re-conceptualize both projects as part of an urbanistic vision and integrated cultural economic development.

Description The project consists of the rehabilitation of the Children’s Park, located in the Central Park in Santurce. It focuses on an area of approximately 10 acres in the south quadrant of the municipal sports complex Central Park, bordering to the north with the sports facilities of the park and

to the south with the Caño Martín Peña. The area is a landfill, originally claimed to Caño. Subsequently it was trash deposit and from the 70’s asphalted parking on surface serving the facilities of the park. The design responds to recover the coast of the Caño Martín Peña as part of a greater landscape dedicated to the use and the public recreation. At its southeast end the park connects with the Linear Park Enrique Martí

Coll. The park was designed by Andrés Mignucci Arquitectos for the municipality of San Juan in 1999-2000. Its initial development consisted of passive recreational facilities based on the creation of a garden for children in what was for many years the parking of the Central Park. The 10 acre property was originally a landfill and later the park’s parking area. The heart of the park consists of five clearings defined by

vegetation designed to explore the park through direct experience emphasizing the use of the five senses of the human body; the visual, the aural, the touch, the smell and the taste. Its construction ended in July 2001. During the last 12 years the park suffered a deterioration marked by lack of maintenance, security and improvised interventions and without technical advice.

Description The general concept of the project focuses on developing an emblematic building, framed in a park, as the first image that residents and visitor experience when entering the city of Cayey. The building, of public vocation, must project a contemporary image of sustainability and

of architectural vanguard. The roof of the parking lot is conceived as a green roof containing concessions, recreational areas and passive

recreation, as well as a place for public space programming events such as outdoor concerts, gastronomic and craft market, open air cinema

and festivals among others. The project operates on two stopovers, on the scale of the city municipality of Cayey, and in turn on the scale of the region, with Cayey as the main city of the mountain region.

Description Residence for students, teachers and athletes at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. This project emerges as an expansion

of rehabilitation to the new Center of Students of this university by the architect Andrés Mignucci Giannoni. Its original design was in charge

of architect Henry Klumb and opened its doors for the first time in 1961. After a long season closed and with a remarkable state of deterioration and abandonment arises the need for it’s rehabilitation. Highlighting its importance through freedom of movement in its interior spaces, which allows spaces of greater fluidity and the use of its structure as a predominant aesthetic resource in space. It is a predominantly vertical

structure and is attached to the main structure (Student Center). The building stands out in its physical environment before a great variety of natural and constructed elements of landscape. An important challenge for this project was the design of a new direct vehicular entrance to the structure, highlighting the natural elements and their fluidity of pedestrian circulation.

Description The Capstone project proposes the redevelopment of the Experimental Agricultural Station located in the municipality of Gurabo. Using the

old Experimental Dairy as a base and support anchor, the project looks for the fusion of three main components: education, research and agricultural practice. From these three components, an academic site and research center will be developed that will allow us to educate and train both students, professionals and society as a whole. In addition, we propose a business component that allows the production and reuse of agricultural land, developing our native product, and defining our own agricultural strategies and policies

Description The work emphasis in this workshop is aimed at the population of the Villa Palmeras community, which lacks adequate spaces for inte-

gration and social development in the community. Through re-habilitating an existing structure in the place a new building is proposed,

which contains a library center, technology center, study rooms and food concessionaries. The urban intervention aims to generate a social

interaction that consolidates the community by defining a form that maximizes the program space and provides the largest area of public

space for use and enjoyment. Through the environment in which the project is developed the fundamental intention is based on creating a large public space between both structures, while their separation allows to strengthen the visual experience of both structures without one taking a leading role over the other.

Professor Arq. José Coleman-Davis Pagán, AIA / Arq. Víctor Nieto Villalón Location Santurce, Puerto Rico Area 2,650 m2

Description The building workshop is an advanced synthesis exercise applied to a medium-scale architectural project. The workshop starts from the premise that every act of edification is an act of making a city. The work shows a detailed design development and illustrates an understanding of the general systems that make up a responsible contemporary building. Divided into a first phase of Research followed by a second phase of Building. It includes developing a site plan to improve the urban condition where the project is located. The Center of Art and Urban

Caricature is a starting point towards a proposal of cultural, artistic and leisure space. Established by two structures; an existing one and

another proposal which create among them the main public space. It is constituted as a public / educational space, supported by structures

with specialized spaces for art, music and culture in general. In addition, it has gastronomic salon, Auditorium, exhibition halls, multipurpose room and salons for community workshops. The roof of the existing building has outdoor terraces for the use of visuals, development of events and contemplation of the proposed exterior art in public space.

As a starting point, they begin to generate simple but very definite moves that achieve a more contemporary style and housing volume. The project is delimited in the first phase of rehabilitation on its front facade. Having primarily a sober structure and lack of architectural character, the design is based

on the axis of movement at its entrance as a central element. In addition, emphasis is on materials like metal, exposed concrete and establishing horizontal elements with the color white.
