We met Antonio in the street eight years ago, when he was living on a bench with his partner. We started visiting them and creating a stronger relationship with them. We have been seeking ways together to help build their future. Currently, they live in a flat and Antonio gets involved in Arrels, explaining to the people the problem of living in the street. Antonio doesn’t want to be important, he wants to be useful. In 2011, we have attended 414 people on the street.

ARRELS 2011 I DON’T WANT TO BE IMPORTANT, I WANT TO BE USEFUL

In accordande with the statute of Arrels, this year we have updated the Board, which is currently formed by: President: Carmen Zapata Secretary: Josep Miquel Esteban Font Spokespersons: Joaquim Pons Santiago Ramentol Albert Recio Anna Saumoy Roger Torres

Dear friends,

WE WANT TO BE USEFUL ATTENDING THE MOST EXCLUDED PEOPLE

I have a bittersweet feeling while I write these words. On one hand I feel admiration for all the work done by the people who have formed part of Arrels, at one time or another, during these 25 years, while on the other I’m also concerned it has been a hard 2011 for many people. Maybe you know a person who is suffering a difficult situation, who is going to fall, in a short time, into a vulnerable one.

1.126 people attended 200 people housed and 53.824 nights in accomodatio 22.776 daily meals 95 people having personal assistance

Losing a job is a catalyst to begin a fall which ends up in hell. That’s why, with the current unemployment figures so high, a lot of suffering is expected in the coming years and this might lead to individual and familiar conflicts, along with some associated problems. Streets will be the home for many people in some years’ time. We can’t let it happen. We must act. We must be useful. Since 2008, there has been an increase of 27% of people sleeping in the street. We can’t let it happen. It’s important to work on prevention and make sure more families don’t lose their home, so dignified emergency facilities to cover this increase of people are more important than ever. The only way to overcome it is if we are capable of working together. Finally, I want to especially thank the accurate work, the warm welcoming and the generosity of all the people who collaborate with Arrels. This time, I would like to highlight the work of the volunteers and professionals of this home who, although not attending people directly, carry out important duties. Their work remains always in the background, but without them, Arrels wouldn’t be able to run. Thank you, colleagues and friends from maintenance, IT, administration, human resources and funding! “My job consists of helping people to acquire some habits, like personal hygiene, and I also help them to connect with their surroundings. I always feel very proud when they become autonomous and can take care of themselves. The best part is seeing how they develop and recover their forgotten habits”. (Pepi Rodríguez)

6

Being useful with those people without a home means to do our best to guarantee their primary needs, such as housing, meals and hygiene. In 2011, we have served 22.776 daily meals; 548 have used the hygiene services and we have housed 200 people. However, for Arrels, being useful also means remaining closer to people in a continued way, designing plans of interaction with them to improve their situation and their future, witnessing their decisions, addressing the proper counselling to them about legal issues to make sure they get their rights, offering them the proper access to the city resources in order to improve their daily life, etc. Through 2011, 335 people were given this intensive and individualized social monitoring. This year, we want to highlight the assistance care at home offered by us -thanks to the help of professionals and volunteers-, to 95 people who have a medium or low degree of autonomy. An attention which ranges from going to the doctor with the person, going out for a walk or helping them with their hygiene services, looking after their well-being and helping them to have a shower or comb their hair. We want to do this duty as best as possible. That’s the reason why we focus our efforts on improving daily our responses to the current needs, along with the innovation in order to be ready to address all new needs. In this sense, we work within a network along with the rest of the entities and organizations in the city, with the aim of finding the best resources for each need of the people attended by us.

1.126 attended people 335 people under monitoring 22.776 daily meals 624 package meals supplied 936 people accompanied to the doctor and helped with paperwork 56 people advised in legal issues

95 people have received assisted care 64 people monitored for serious mental disorders 68 people have used the storage room 548 people have used the hygienic service 4.406 showers in the Open Centre 26.623 pieces of clothes distributed

Mrs Arrate is 50 years old and since February 2010 has rented three rooms for people from Arrels.

Housing is one of the keys to having a stable life in society. This year, we have supplied a dignified and steady roof for 200 people through different kinds of housing. More important for us than the number of people housed, though, is the time they have been living in a home with Arrels’ support: an average of 372 days, which illustrates the aim of the entity to provide a steady and continuous attention. This year, the Supported Housing Service has enabled the accomodation of 73 people who have been housed for an average of 246 days. In the residential home Llar Pere Barnés 1 69 persons have been attended and they were housed for an average of 172 days. We can confirm that last year’s tendency, about the growing figures of places in rented rooms -which was already foreseen- has been consolidated in 2011. This modality of housing is, furthermore, very positive for people attended in Arrels, since, unlike the housing in hostels, sharing a flat demands people to recover domestic and social skills, learning to distribute incomes and expenses in a responsible way and also dealing with the fact of flat-sharing. This year, 81 people have been housed according to this modality -four years ago, there were only three people living in a rented room. Moreover, the number of people who are housing people attended in Arrels in their home is growing, creating an increased level of social awareness and a healthy approach to this social group. Furthermore, as every year, we have had the chance of using the housing equipments of Mambré Foundation, provided, administered and offered to the people without a home attended in Arrels. In this sense, this year, we could afford 2 flats, with 11 places in total; three more flats, handed by the Board of City Council, and different places in the residential home Llar Ronda.

ARRELS 2011 I DON’T WANT TO BE IMPORTANT, I WANT TO BE USEFUL

“These 10 years of La Troballa represent for me a routine of learning on different levels. On a professional level, I’ve been able to participate in a project of the entity from its origin. Personally, I’ve had the chance of living closely the story of many people, each of them unique, with qualities to share. In a human sense, I’ve experienced values such as solidarity and altruism, to keep on thinking changes are possible. Thank you, Troballa, and happy birthday!” (Rocío Alonso)

8

Rocío, responsible of La Troballa, and Pere, making the symbol of the 10 years with their hands.

The students of the Sixth Year of the Patronat Domènech school visit the wardrobe of Arrels.

In 2001, we created the Arrels workshop, La Troballa, with the aim of helping people who were living in the street to pick up habits and individual and social skills, through handicrafts and homemade creation.

We want a mature society, committed to social problems, so we devote time and effort to stay close to the youngest citizens, in order to explain to them the reasons why people are living in the street and to break stereotypes. If young people are aware of the reality of those who are suffering situations of exclusion, their future visions as adults will be kinder and they will be able to build a comprehensive and fairer society.

This year, La Troballa has celebrated its tenth year. Throughout these 10 years, we have realised how, keeping the same objective of the workshop, La Troballa has gone beyond this primary idea. In these years, we have been creating a way to understand people’s relationship with the work done, with the product as a result of the work, with the group and the environment, which makes this workshop a place of achievement of the different processes to improve the life of people attended. An example of this particular relationship between all the areas of interaction is the project that -along with the designer Curro Claret-, took off in 2010. This project started with the participation of different users of La Troballa in a workshop making stools, following the instructions of the producer. This type of workshop has become in 2011 a special routine of work in La Troballa.

This year, we have interacted with 2.019 students, through 87 talks to raise awareness in schools. Moreover, we have organized 25 talks to other groups. Students come to visit us at the Open Centre of the Foundation, where we explain to them how and why things are done. We want them to be first hand-witnesses of the reality of people we attend. That’s why our talks are usually followed by the testimony of one of the users. We also use, intensively, different communication channels to assure the duty of raising awareness amongst the society. From the most traditional ones -paper publications and media-, to the newest -social networks.

In this current year, 58 people have participated in the workshop of La Troballa.

In 2011, we have started to participate with the European Volunteering Service, an international project offering young people the possibility to participate in a organization in a different country from the one they are living in. From Arrels, we give young people who are participating in this project the chance to know the different programs of the entity. This also enables a way to share good common practices with people from other European countries who also work in the attendance of the homeless.

We have joined in the Market of Sant Ponç, of Poble Sec, and in the market of Can Vidalet.

112 talks to schools, universities, scouts centres, parish churches and more centres 201 appearances in the media 2.236 fans on Facebook and 1147 followers on Twitter 38.434 visitors of the website

We have offered our products in the handicrafts exhibition of Sant Jordi in Rambla del Raval, in the Entities Exhibition of Poble Sec, in the terraces of Santa Coloma de Gramanet, placed in the range of Marina, in the head office of the trade union UGT of Rambla de Santa Mònica and in Sant Ignaci School.

“Five years ago we heard in the media about a woman living in the street who was burnt by a group of kids. Students in the Sixth Year got interested in homeless people. From the school we started by getting in touch with Arrels and, since then, we visit the entity every year. Hearing the thoughts of the young kids after the visit is a beautiful thing, since they understand these serious situations and get themselves involved with the ones who are suffering”. We are fortunate enough to work face to face with people who lack a home and suffer situations of social exclusion. That’s how we are able to know first hand all the difficulties and concerns of their daily life through their own demands and the observations of volunteers and professionals.

In a social and financial scenario like the one we are living now, it’s especially important to point out the number of proposals and iniciatives we have got this current year from people and collectives. They have intended, now more than ever, to be useful: groups of people offering themselves to organize art performances free, building ties between people from different social areas; artists willing to promote products made in Arrels; journalists interested in the daily life of the people attended and in the future of men and women who are facing difficult situations, etc.

In this sense, from Arrels, we are responsible for collecting these demands, making a valuation and, after considering them, making them arrive in a structured way to the political spheres implied -second and third level entities, public administration, etc- for them to take into account. We want to be a transforming piece of society.

ARRELS 2011 I DON’T WANT TO BE IMPORTANT, I WANT TO BE USEFUL

This working schedule, focused on impact and transformation, along with attention and raising of awaress, are the whole mission of Arrels Foundation. Even if we have been working in this manner since the start, in 2011 this task has been formally developed, linking it to a specific area of organization: the area of impact.

This year, more than ever, people attended in Arrels became encouraged and interested in helping in the daily routine of the entity, getting engaged in special days like the Entities Exhibition of Poble Sec or The Brandery, giving their testimony in appearances in the media in order to make their reality visible to many people, or even tweeting in the Twitter @Placido_ Mo, amongst others. The iniciatives have become part of the process of participation which got started in Arrels some months ago.

Several actions have been carried out in 2011. Amongst others, we highlight the participation in the process of analysis of the Reform of the Minimum Income of Insertion; the active implication through the Network of Attention to People without a Home of Barcelona in the Diagnosis of People in the Street and the delivering of 38 suggestions to improve the situation of people without a home in the context of the city elections and general elections. Suggestions like the iniciative of reducing the price of Metropolitan Transport in Barcelona for these people who don’t have an income; people who earn the Minimum Income of Insertion or people who earn the income given by the central government. This latest income is addressed to the ones collecting retirement pensions in order to help them pay the rent through state benefits or the possibility to access to a state subsidized housing. Moreover, some contributions have been drawn up to the 43 suggestions of the document “Making up a national strategy to prevent and eradicate homeless phenomena”, of the FEAPSH (Federaton of Entities Supporting the People without a Home).

This 2011, so complicated for so many sectors, we want to emphasize especially the importance of the 78 companies who have supported us giving a roof to Barcelona, bringing economical support, food or time; also important are the 3.752 members and contributors who inject life into Arrels.

10

We have participated in 19 networks, working on issues about social measures, housing, social inclusion and volunteering.

3.752 members and economical contributors 78 companies and 11 foundations in collaboration with us

Each one of them, as much as they can, has wanted to be useful for those people most in need, when they most need it.

“I had been wondering about collaborating in an entity in charge of solving the problems of this country, in a real and practical way. I was recommended Arrels Foundation and I saw very clearly, when I eventually met the entity first hand, that it was what I’d been looking for. Since then, we collaborate as much as we can. I encourage my business colleagues to do the same. Gathering our efforts is the only way to help those people’s lives”. (Mari Carmen Lozano) ARRELS 2011 I DON’T WANT TO BE IMPORTANT, I WANT TO BE USEFUL

“The counting meant stepping onto the street and seeing people alone, without a roof, in the middle of the night. It was an enriching experience, a lesson for me provided by Arrels” (Jordi Gironella)

Jordi, volunteer of Arrels Fundació, participated in the diagnosis of people sleeping in the street of Barcelona last 8th November.

The profit for 2011 is framed in a context of strong economical and social recession. 2.633.987.47€ of Arrels’ assets come from private financing sources -55% (members, contributors, companies, entities, etc.)- to whom we are especially thankful, since the increase of the average amount of members’ periodical fees and the increase of contributions coming from individuals have helped to maintain the accounting balance of the entity.

C) CURRENT LIABILITIES

471.381,67

Public funding has kept a steady growth, even if it has decreased one point in percentage terms -from 39% to 38% of the total. Contributions of people housed in Arrels are also important (7%), since they take part in and get responsible for their own process and the dynamic of the entity at the same time. Finally, we must highlight that the accounting result for 2011 is of surplus (23.923,03 €) and it has been possible thanks to the strong control of expenses.
