Let me introduce you to Miquel;
his hands are shown in the an-
nual report’s cover you are reading now. Aged 52, he has worked as a butcher, builder and gravedigger. Moreover, he has lived 23 years on the street. Now he comes to Arrels to have a shower and help out with the Day Centre activities. Miquel is one among the 1.600 people we have attended in 2014. Last year, we attended 17% more people than in 2013; we visited 611 people who are living on the street and we offered nearly 95.000 meals and a dignified place to have a shower to 466 people. 48% of the 2014 budget was devoted to housing and in total we offered housing to 231 people. The objective for 2015 is to continue accompanying these 1.600 people, visiting them on the street, offering them dignified housing and broadening some basic services like showers. We’re counting on you to make it possible! FERRAN BUSQUETS DIRECTOR OF ARRELS FOUNDATION 4

What have we done in 2014?
STREET OUTREACH WORK to know more about homeless people
What have we done? The reality of homeless people is the tip of the iceberg of poverty and more information is needed to know how to tackle it. In 2014, we organized two night counts (in May and November) with the aim of finding out how many people sleep rough. For now, we have started covering four areas of Barcelona: Ciutat Vella, Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc and Sant Martí. Who has got involved? 72 volunteers that, distributed in small groups, walked the streets together from midnight to 02:00am. The majority were citizens of Barcelona concerned about the problem of homeless people and they were participating in the count for the first time. People who have lived on the street for some time in their life also participated, offering their experience.
WHAT HAVE WE ACHIEVED? Firstly, obtain information so as to know first hand the evolution of the reality of homeless people who sleep rough in Barcelona and whether the figures are going up or down. Secondly, have more criteria for strengthening Arrels’ street team and know how many more volunteers are needed.
2015
And this year, what will be done? We will continue making outreach street visits to know more about the people who sleep rough and we will keep on looking for volunteers for Arrels’ street team, in order to be able to cover all the city of Barcelona. 6
2014
What have we done in 2014?
OPEN IN THE MORNINGS to offer a place of shelter
What have we done? Until a short while ago, Arrels offered its care facilities and services in the afternoon only. We knew it wasn’t enough and many homeless people asked us also to come in the mornings. Since last December, we are open in the mornings as well to offer a hot coffee and a place of shelter. Who has got involved? 18 new volunteers and a social educators team who have created bonds with the people who have come to Arrels for the first time, looking for support.
WHAT HAVE WE ACHIEVED? More important than serving a breakfast is creating a bond with homeless people or people who live in an unstable place, who we have met through this initiative. In total, we have welcomed an average of 50 people per day in the mornings.
2015
And this year, what will be done? The objetive is to find the money needed to continue with the initiative throughout the year. We also want to broaden the showers’ schedule, wardrobe and locker services to make them available in the mornings as well as the afternoons. 7
2014
What have we done in 2014?
REPORT FRAUDS suffered by homeless people
What have we done? Reported to Barcelona’s Public Prosecutor 12 frauds suffered by homeless people, who were tricked when they lived on the street into making themselves administrators of fraudulent companies. Arrels detected these cases in 2013 and notified the Inland Revenue and the Department of Social Security; the report was taken to the Public Prosecutor on November the 3rd 2014. Who has got involved? Arrels’ legal team, client support team and political impact team, who have exposed the case to the Inland Revenue, the Department of Social Security and Barcelona’s Public Prosecutor.
WHAT HAVE WE ACHIEVED? Making visible not only these 12 cases of fraud, but also the regular practice of trying to trick homeless people (or persuade them by offering them a sandwich or one night’s accommodation in exchange) to commit fraud on them. At Arrels, we know more people who were also attempted to be tricked when they lived on the street and we are concerned about other people who might not have the support of a foundation and who might be victims of this type of fraud. 2015
And this year, what will be done? We will continue collaborating with the agents involved in order to expose the situation and we will pay attention to any irregularity concerning the 1.600 people we attend. 8

What have we done in 2014?
CREATE FONTS from homeless people’s handwriting
What have we done? We have launched the project HomelessFonts.org, which offers the possibility of downloading fonts made with homeless people’s handwriting. Throughout 2014, five different fonts have been created and the initiative has become known on an international level. Who has got involved? HomelessFonts.org has been a collaborative project. The idea was prompted by the publicity agency The Cyranos McCann, supported by the producer Oxígeno and Arrels. After that, six different typographers from different countries offered themselves to improve the typographies and to develop more, and many designers have volunteered to help us creating templates and possible applications, to encourage people to use these fonts.
WHAT HAVE WE ACHIEVED?
We have turned around the stereotypical image of homeless people and this can be seen by the 307 typography downloads carried out by individuals and companies. The project has been awarded prizes in five publicity festivals and Monotype, a leading company in fonts distribution, has joined the project by offering its downloading platform to promote HomelessFonts. 2015
And this year, what will be done? The project’s objective is to offer at least ten complete different fonts by the end of 2015, as well as boosting its commercialization. 9

What have we done in 2014?
CHANGE our approach to attend people better
What have we done? We have started implementing the Housing First model, which offers a home from the start and encourages as much as possible the person’s autonomy. This requires a change in the mentality and the manner of working; for that reason, in 2014 we have restructured our teams with the aim of attending people better. Who has got involved? Social workers, educators and volunteers who, until the change, were carrying out tasks to guarantee the basic needs of the person and support those that live in flats. Our team is composed of 12 professionals, 25 volunteers and an employed user who swap their roles and complement each other.
WHAT HAVE WE ACHIEVED? Improved the support to the people we attend and provided better stability in terms of housing. This new approach has started to strengthen the autonomy and personal skills of the people we support.
2015
And this year, what will be done? There’s a double objective: firstly, to strengthen the team with more volunteers; secondly, to offer individual and stable flats and promote community integration in the areas where they are located. 10
What have we done in 2014?
TEAMWORK of professionals, volunteers and contributors
In 2014, we have counted on 398 volunteers who have mostly helped with accompanying people; 318 belong to the core team which guarantees the smooth running of our services and projects throughout the year and the other 80 have participated in specific activities; at Christmas or in the summer. We’d like to point out the increase of attended people -up to 31- who have got involved raising awareness to the students who visit us, in administrative tasks, maintenance work, organizing the wardrobe or the hygiene services, etc. In 2014 we have also worked to rejuvenate Arrels’ Board of Directors, incorporating people who have lived on the street. This renovation took place in January 2015 and the Board of Directors is now made up of 10 people: two attended people, two volunteers, five heads of department and the director. Furthermore, in 2014 Arrels has received the support of 4.019 members and contributors.

What else have we done in 2014?
Accompanied until the end.Strolled together.-
We have explained the situation of homeless people to more than 2.335 students and many of them have walked the streets of Barcelona, guided by people who have lived on the street.
28 people who lived or used to live on the street passed away in 2014. Living on the street shortens life by 20 years.
Improved the laundry service.Accepted new challenges.-
10 people who have lived on the street have made the advertising material of the glasses brand ArtLife, which can be found in the shop windows of 500 opticians all over the world.
Warned about the lack of showers.-
Shower services available to homeless people in Barcelona are insufficient. We reported it last summer along with the Welcome Centre AssĂs.
Since June we have a new laundry service up and running to make sure the people who live in pensions or sub-tenancy rooms can wash their clothes in the most autonomous way.
Promoted healthy free-time activities.-
Throughout the year, we organize leisure activities aimed at creating relations. Last year, 250 homeless people and 50 volunteers were involved.
Promoted Housing First .-
300 people came to the conference about Housing First, arranged by the University of Barcelona, Arrels and the City Council. Experts from France and Portugal explained all about this model of support to homeless people. 12
Informed Parliament.-
Catalonia’s Parliament received in March 2014 a Monographic about poverty from thirty associations. Arrels reported that 3.000 people live on the street in Catalonia.
Portrayed poverty.-
Get together.-
Last November, the Network of Attention to Homeless People presented “Roofless Portraits”, which connected 12 homeless people with artists from different specialities and university students of Anthropology. Arrels took part!
Banked on summer volunteers.-
41 people have volunteered in the summer activities at the Open Centre and Arrels’ Home, between July and September.
As every year, we have celebrated Arrels’ annual meeting where we participated as professionals, volunteers and people attended. In 2014, we have shared doubts and ideas about the Housing First attention model.
Promoted solidarity loans.-
In 2014, we have borrowed 368.000 euros from 76 people through solidarity loans. The money has been invested in preventing possible problems provoked by the delay in the payment of public subsidies.
Coordinated with health experts.-
One of Arrels’ objectives is raising awareness. That’s why we have met 40 doctors of the Primary Medical Centre in the area of Drassanes (Barcelona) to improve the medical attention to homeless people.
Created pieces of furniture which explain lives.-
The designer Curro Claret collaborates with Arrels’ workshop manufacturing pieces of furniture with recycled products. In 2014 he has worked with people with different profiles and has exposed the result in the Vinçon shop in Barcelona.
Travelled and shared what have we learnt.-
Opened new flats.-
Our objective is making sure that the people we attend can live in individual flats. At the end of the year, 55 were sharing a flat and 25 lived alone.
We have started 2014 by explaining to Arrels’ workmates and the Network of Attention to Homeless People everything we learnt in London, were we visited projects supporting homeless people. 13
WE HAVE DEVOTED 48% of the budget to housing
Arrels started 2014 with financial instability and losses accumulated from previous years that reached 148.902,36 euros. The year ended with a surplus of 173.789,25, due in part to the sale of property; this surplus will be able to compensate the losses accumulated. In 2014, we haven’t extended services but neither have we stopped attending people who we were already accompanying. The total expenditure has been 2.955.789,29 euros, 48% of which was invested in guaranteeing housing.
