One of Thailands most priceworthy islands That Koh Phangan wwould only consist of young people and drugs dancing to heavy techno music is a myth. Okay, day-long celebrations occur but there is another side of the island too. Child-friendly beaches that stretches like a string of pearls around the entire island, accommodation in all price ranges and great snorkeling water. Koh Phangan is still seen as one of the most affordable islands in Thailand to visit. Koh Phangan is located in south-eastern Thailand between the popular islands of Koh Samui and Koh Tao. The boat from Surat Thaini to Samui is about 2 hours, from Samui to Phangan, takes 30 minutes and another 60 minutes to Koh Tao. Thong Sala is the island’s capital where most people arrive as there is the large port. Around the island is more than 20 of stunning beaches, most are accessed through the concrete road while others are easier to reach from the water with a long tail boat. If you are good in counting you will end up well over 20 different beautiful beaches. If you travel from Thong Sala on the west coast where the ferries arrive to the small island, Koh Ma, on the north-west part of the island you will pass more than 10 beaches allready. Each with its own charm with and various accommodation close to the sea and affordable restaurants to eat at. Phangan may be ten years after Samui in their development, which has created a place that is more quaint by comparison. The important cultural and tourist Haad Rin Beach is popular during the full moon nights, but is worth visiting the rest of the month for its chaotic jumble of bars, clubs, restaurants and shops with various crafts. At many other undeveloped and pristine beaches are only a few bungalows that disturbs the peace. The most exclusive of these are Thong Naipan thanks to the island’s most luxurious resort Santhiya Resort and Spa and Panviman. Opinions differ about the first settlers to Koh Phangan. Although most agree that the first people who moved to the island were Muslim, “sea gypsies” who traveled by boat from the Malay Peninsula. Today there are very few Muslim residents remained on the island. Phangan comes from the word “Ngan” meaning “sand dune”. Phangan is the perfect destination for families and there is more than 100 hotels and resorts on the island.

Beaches Haad Rin - full moon beach Haad Rin is the most popular beach on Koh Phangan, known for for the notorious full moon parties once a month. The beach is shaped like a crescent with beautiful white sand that are perfect for sunbathing and swimming - and wild parties. The genuine Thai everyday life has long since been replaced by tourists, especially young travelers who want a party happy holiday. -Haad Rin is divided into two different beaches. Haad Rin Nok, also known as Sunrise Beach, where the famous Full Moon Parties are held and are said to be one of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Phangan. The beach is named for its beautiful sunrises. During most of the year, the beach is perfect for swimming, but during Christmas and New Year, the waves can get pretty high, and dangerous to surf as they break on the rocks at either side of the beach. Haad Rin Nai, also known as Sunset Beach, located on the other side of the headland. From here you can travel to Koh Samui by the boat â&#x20AC;&#x153;Haad Rin Queenâ&#x20AC;? running four trips per day. Haad Rin Nai is the quieter of the two beaches. 8

Thong Nai Pan Noi Beach

Ban Tai is a fairly shallow beach but may not be one of the most beautiful of Phangan’s bays and the water may not be as clear as on the beaches on the western and northers part. Together with the neighboring beaches Ban Tai forms a six km. long coastline, perfect to exercice on. From Ban Tai you can experience wonderful sunsets and on clear days you can have a view of Ang Thong and Samui. The beach is lined with coconut palms providing a cool shade on a hot day! Many different restaurants serving pizza, burgers, pasta and Thai food. Easier shopping with beachwear and similar, but for major shopping, you should head for Thong Sala.

Than Sadet

If you like to take part of wonderful sunrises then you need to stay on Than Sadet, one of Koh Phangans east-facing beaches. The beach is not as accessible as many of Phangans other beaches which makes it to a real hideaway. If you are an early riser you can see the magic when the sun climbs up over the horizon. Most of the bungalows on Than Sadet are easy going with hammocks on the veranda, -and really, is there a better way to catch the sunrise slowly rocking back and forth in your own?

MAE HAAD This is one of the best places to snorkel, bring your gear and head out directly from the beach or from Koh Ma - joined to Mae Haad by a walkable sand bar. Mae Haad is laid-back and for shore you’ll see scuba divers in learning, as there’s plenty of corals. 10

Haad Salad Just a few minutes up on the west coast

from Haad Yao you you can find the little gem of this cove. Here you will feel a long way from the more noiser, southern part of Koh Phangan, Haad Salad is made for hammocks. Salad is still not to far from the main town, Haad Salad (20 min. with motorbike). Haad Salad for shore is one of those beaches that you will remember as being a provider of total tranquility, good choise!

shaped bays, Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi once consisted only of easy bamboo huts. In recent years these have been removed to make space for larger, more modern resorts. The beaches still is a calm place, especially at the end of Thong Nai Pan Yai where you can find some more classical, rustic Thai style accommodations, more laid-back! To get here you’ll need to jump on a songthaew or rent a long-tail. It’s well worth the extra effort. Once you’re here you’ll realise why this beach been a favourite for many. After one week we can guarantee that a you will have difficult to leave.

From the viewpoint, on the south part you will have a great view over the beach. If you’re looking for things to see and do around Had Yao, the westcoast offer something for everyone. The coral reefs that surrounds both the west and south coast of Phangan creates a heaven for marine life and the area that runs from Ao Chao Phao up to Koh Ma is considered to be the best on the island, for both divers and snorkeling enthusiasts. At Koh Ma it possible to spot turtles, reef sharks and swim amongst shoals of colorful tropical fish.

Haad Khom is a small beach on the north part of Phangan, east of Chaloklum Bay. Famous for its casual style and popular among those who return to Phangan year after year and want to get away from more tourist-crowded beaches. On either side of the beach you can find more rocky sections.

Tis is a small beach coarse sand course sand and coral deposits. The beach is too shallow to swim most of the time because the nearby reef, but drops off steeply after. Sometimes the beach shines up as a trance party venue and has a few bungalows for longtermers.

The beach is about 2,5 km. long, with the main village of Chaloklum right in the centre. The area still is primarily to be a fishing village and dominates the mid-section of the beach where the local fishermen keep their longtail boats which creates a great view while eating in the local restaurants there.

Haad Chao Phao Crescent shaped small and cozy beach. Along the beach palm trees are lined up to provide shade. Haad Chao Phao Beach is a popular choice for sunbathe, swim and snorkeling and beautiful sunsets. The sand may not be as smooth and soft as the other beaches on the island, but in some places it is really lovely. At the Blue Ocean Resort can enjoy a dinner, Italian or Thai style.

Haad SON Had Son on the west coast, just below Had Yao is a private beach, one of the region’s most undeveloped and secluded bays. The beach is approximately 200 metres long and there is one resort on the beach, Haad Son Resort, located on their own secluded white sandy bay on the popular sunset coastline. The beautiful natural surroundings harmonize with the environment creating a special private paradise. Haad Son resort has a great variety of accommodation options with the emphasis focused on quality and style, from island huts to luxury air-con villas.

At both side of the village are some nice stretches of beach, good for swimming when the tides are high (December to March). During low-tide-seasons, you may have to adapt your swim to the daily high tides. Unfortunately most of the coral reef in the he bay is dead due to the extensive fishing. Because of its northern location, either sunrise or sunset can be perceived from the beach. 11

This small island just off Ao Mae Haad on Phanganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s northwestern tip has a pair of small but really beautiful beaches. During low tide a sand dune connects the island to the mainland that you can walk on. During high tide you will still be able to reach the island but your feet will maybe be wet! Unfortunately, we find some debris and piles of used bottles on the island, which is sad! But its a beautiful place to roll out your towel and brush up on your tan while you work your way through your favorite book, and to bring your snorkel gear coz this is one of the best places for snorkeling, best on the west side of the island. There should be one resort on the island, Koh Ma Dive Resort but not shore its open. If you are looking for some place to stay there are plenty to choose from at Mae Haad Beach and you will only have a few steps to walk if you want to discover Koh Ma... One beautiful resort is Maehaad Bay Resort, high season from 2,500Thb or more easy Maehaad Garden Inn from 500Thb/night, your choise!

Koh Tao is about 70 km from the mainland and was used as a prison, from 1933 to 1947, to political prisoners from the “Bowaradech insurrection.” The isolated location in the Gulf of Thailand was a perfect place to keep prisoners, Thailand’s “Alcatraz”! After the prison closed permanent residents came, both from Samui and Phangan for fishing and settled on the island to harvest coconuts.

Koh Tao - the turtle island Koh Tao has a deserved reputation for its natural beauty and rich marine life with wonderful coral reefs and tropical beaches to be found here. Koh Tao has become a popular island for many divers, but also for others who just want to spend lazy days on the beach, the island is a breathtaking paradise. A small island just north of Koh Phangan (90 min from Phangan and additional 45 min to Samui), which has become a popular destination for scuba divers and snorkelers around the world. Koh Tao means Turtle Island in Thai and has been given the name because of the turtles that was swimming here in thewaters in the past. It is also said that the island has the shape of a turtle, if you use your imagination properly! His Majesty King Rama V visited the island in 1899 and carved his signature in a large stone at the end of Sairee Beach. The stone is still there today. Visit Koh Tao to relax on the beaches, the island’s nightlife, easy shopping and of course to stretch your body into the crystal clear waters and for snorkeling and scuba diving! The most famous beaches is Haad Sai Ree, Mae Haad Beach and Ao Chalok. Hat Sai Ree is arguably the biggest tourist beach and is adjacent to the main pier, Mae Haad, on the island’s west side. Welcome to Koh Nang YUAN! Koh Nang Yuan is a small island located northwest of Koh Tao. Actually, the island consists of three small islands tied together with a long sandy stretch. Nang Yuan is a very popular destination for snorkeling enthusiasts and divers. The island feels very Thai and when you arrive you will be greeted by a long wooden bridge built on piles. The bridge takes you between the big rocks to the beach where you can enjoy sunbathing and swimming or/ and snorkelling. Nang Yuan beaches Koh Nang Yuan is a great beach that conects the three islands which are full of small coral pieces in every conceivable form. It is forbidden to bring the corals from the island, they belong here. From the dune you have water on both sides, but the right side is the best for snorkeling with magestic different corals. The water is crystal clear and beautiful turquoise, very inviting!

Koh Nang Yuan by night Koh Nang Yuan is a quiet island with no bars. There is basic food on the resort restaurant on the island, and If you are kind, they may mixe you a drink too! Here you can enjoy a very quiet holiday, except during the daytime when all the tourists arrive... Dive and snorkel Due to the clear waters of Nang Yuan snorkeling is absolutely fantastic here. You do not need to take many steps from the beach before the coral reefs begins and all the colorful fish swimming under you. It is impressive that they swim so close! Getting to Nang Yuan Koh Nang Yuan is but a 10-15 minute journey from the west side of Koh Tao. DIVING AROUND KOH TAO Still, one can hear that Koh Tao is referred to as the Turtle Island. The shape of the island is said to resemble a turtle (with a lot of imagination). Koh Tao has a deserved reputation for its natural beauty and rich marine life of the coral reefs and tropical beaches to be found here and has become a popular island for many divers, but also for others who just want to spend lazy days on the beach, the island is a wonderfully beautiful place.

Dive spots

Aow Leuk Depth 2m-12m Aow Leuk is a shallow dive site and great for student divers to practice their skills. A good option for fun divers is to get dropped off at Hin Ngam (on the way into Aow Leuk) as it offers a wider variety of marine life and is also a little bit deeper. Chumphon Pinnacle Depth 14m-35m Regarded as one of Koh Tao’s best dive sites when conditions are good, Chumphon Pinnacle is located within a 40 minute boat journey away from the island. This is a dive site you must visit during your stay on Koh Tao. You can see many huge shoals of fish, and this is where you have the best chance of seeing a Whale Shark. Check Twitter @roctopus for sightings. Green Rock Depth 12m-20m Green Rock is a great dive site to explore. It offers many ‘swim throughs’, great corals, and enough marine life to make you come back for more. Hin Wong Pinnacle Depth 10m-28m This dive site is a good alternative to Chumphon Pinnacle as it’s usually quiet. Located on the East side of the island it’s made up of many large boulders, so there are plenty of places for the fish to hide.

Sail Rock Depth Surface-40m This is the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand. A very impressive place that attracts a huge amount of marine life. This site is not visited every week as it’s a 2 hours boat journey to get there. Send us a message to find out when the next trip is. Shark Island Another ‘must see’ dive site during your visit to Koh Tao. At Shark Island you don’t see any sharks (it got it’s name due to the shape of the island looking like a shark fin) but you will see everything else you could possibly want to see on Koh Tao. Southwest Pinnacle Depth 5m-28m This dive site is very similar to Chumphon Pinnacle. It consists of one main pinnacle which is surrounded by smaller pinnacles. See if you can find the ‘secret pinnacle’. Twins Depth 10m-18m Twins is the most popular dive site on the island. It’s small, quite shallow, and offers a big selection of fish life and corals. You should also explore Buoyancy World (located to the north) which is a group of sculptures and buoyancy aids… definitely something you don’t see very often underwater! White Rock 10m-20m Another popular choice. White Rock is one of the biggest dive site around Koh Tao and will need more than one dive to truly explore.

Japanese Gardens Depth 2m-14m Japanese Gardens is a popular dive site and another good choice for beginner divers. Located around Koh Nang Yuan, it contains many different varieties of hard corals, and resembles a garden – hence the name. Mango Bay Depth 2m-12m This beautiful secluded bay offers some good shallow water diving. You can explore both sides of the bay or do a ‘drop off’ on your way into the it (preferred by fun divers) Red Rock Just around the island from Japanese Gardens, Red Rock is a small pinnacle that comes up to just below the surface of the water. If you go to Red Rock, you need to swim to the coast and find Nang Yuan Cave. It’s one of the more beautiful swim-throughs on Koh Tao and should not be missed.

Best time to visit Koh TAO The best time to visit Koh Tao is usually the same time that everybody else wants to visit the island! To choose a time with decent weather, but some extra elbow room can be tricky. Here below you can see what the weather looks like during different time of year, then it’s up to you, what time of the year you choose to visit Koh Tao. Whenever you do it, we are sure you will have a fantastic experience. The rainy season on Koh Tao is from September until mid December. In September and December you can experience short bursts but still nice days, and rain often disappear as quickly as it came. For those who want to avoid the rain should perhaps avoid the period from mid-October to mid-December, from November with the most intense monsoon period, which also affects harder every five years. For those who still take the chance to travel during the off-season can enjoy discounted accommodations and lower prises at restaurants as well as large private areas on beaches. If youre interested in diving you should be ware of that the visibility in the waters decreases by about a third during the monsoon season. June can be a great time to visit Tao because the weather is nice with little rain and not too much heat, while the number of visitors are lower as most vacationers are waiting for the school holidays in July and August to travel to the island.

During the eurpean summer the island is hectic and quickly becoming crowded. Room rates are increasing and the beaches getting full. The warmest months are March to May when the heat also makes most beach vendors absent, no use to walk the beach back and forth near the saturation point of moisture along a beach which also lacked customers. If you can visit Koh Tao in April, try to make it to Songkran. At April 13 the Thai New Year celebration starts and hold on for three days, sometimes longer. The whole country celebrates the New Year by throwing water on each other and smear talc in the face, no one can manage from getting wet! Winds cries out in late May and makes it possible for the annual Samui regatta to begin. If sailing is your major interest, this is an event you should not miss. Christmas and New Year During Christmas and New Year, the island is full of tourists but most leave in mid-January to late February for school and work back home. This is a great time weather-wise to visit Tao. Because of the nice weather this period is still considered to be high season, look around online for good prices on accommodation.

The Ang Thong National Marine Park consists of 42 small islands and is located about 32km. northeast of Samui Island. It was declared a national park in 1980 and is considered to be one of the most beautiful archipelagos in Thailand, hence the name “the gold basin (Ang Thong) of the gulf of Thailand”. The most popular islands among travellers are Koh Wua Ta Lub. The wildlife is extensive with, among others, the long tailed monkey (langur), pacific reef egrets, hair nosed otters, white bellied sea eagles, ashy drongos, tortoises, sea turtles, lizards and pythons. The best time to visit the park should be from the end of January until the end of October. One-day boat excursions are long are popular. A typical trip will visit the islands of Wua Ta Lub Mae Koh, Sam Sao and Tai Plao (the program depends on the weather). and prices usually include lunch and drinks and snorkeling gear. The Ang Thong National Park Office is located on Wua Ta Lub Island which offering beautiful views from the top. A long tail boat will take you to the Aow Ta beach, the perfect spot for swim, sunbathe, kayaking or why not go hiking in the forest. The most beautiful viewpoint you can find up at the Pa Jarudchan viewpoint, although the walk is quite challenging (500 m. climb up the limestone cliff). On the way up you will pass the Pah Salad Dai viewpoint, about 100 m. from Aow Ka Peang beach, also this is well worth a visit. You can benefit from using the rope provided, the route up is steep and can be quite dangerous. At the top, you you will have a spectaccular view from the wooden porch. Many of the islands north of Wua Ta Lub Island can be seen from here. If you stay overnight you can experience the beautiful sunset and sunrise. There is easy-going bungalow accommodation and an camping area, tents are available for rent from the office. The topography of Mae Koh Island, north of Wua Ta Lub Island consists of beautiful limestone cliffs surrounded by nice beaches. Dont miss the emerald lake which was created after the collapse of limestone caverns creating a salt-water lake.

Speed Boat day-tours to Angthong Marine Park Numerous speed boat companies runs daily from Koh Phangan and Koh Samui as well as slow boats. Safari boat are based at Phangan and they also have a office at Koh Samui (Bangrak, close to Seatran pier) and departs by speed boat daily to Angthong from Thongsala pier and Bangrak pier. Speed boats are more safe, fast, comfortable and more convenience than slow boats. The travel time by speed boat from Koh Phangan to Ang Thong usually takes 45 minutes, by slow boat about 2,5 hours. Slow boat are cheaper but can’t stop at shallow waters so you will need to get a long tail boat to transfer you to the beach. KAYAKING Kayaking is a great way to see Koh Phangan and get a new perspective on the island! Nice trips can be made around Haad Yao, Haad Salad and Koh Ma on the Northwest and from Chaloklum to Bottle Beach in North and from Haad Rin to Haad Khontee or Haad Thian. Most resorts rent out kayaks. Stay close to shore and be aware of currents because getting back might be more difficult. Dont forget to bring water and sun block for protection. 26

Paintball

There is a 3200m2 paintball battlefield close to Thongsala. They have a choice of 6 games to play (capture the flag, defend your base, free for all, rabbit hunt, find find the flag, defend your man) and up to 12 people can play at the same time. They also have a really cool bar with great tunes and a groovy atmosphere where you can enjoy if you not fancy wargames.

CHINESE TEMPLE On the road from Chaloklum to Thong Sala, you will find the largest Chinese temple on the island which was built in 1992. It was a woman named Ms. Malawan who made sure the building was off, after she had a dream and was told by Buddha to build the temple. Impressed by all the lovely patterns and well-made paintings that are here. And do not forget the view you have from the temple. The temple, which is seen as a place of happiness, is open from 8am. to 5pm.

Phangan have three places where you can enjoy an elephant ride through the jungle on mountain paths, a unique experience. Phangan Safari is located just outside Chaloklum on the way south to Madua Wan and Thong Sala. Phangan Elephant Trekking is on the hillside road close to Haad Mae Haad. If you looking for more adventurous ride in the mountains you should head for Ban Tai Elephant Trekking on the road from Ban Tai to Thong Nai Pan. You will find the elephants on the opposite side to a small boxing school and restaurant on top of the first hill.

May we introduce HMS Phangan. A decommissioned Thai Navy ship who found its final resting place at Songserm pier. HMS Phangan was given to the municipal authorities 2009 with a grant to build a permanent dock and to create a museum inside the ship. The permanent dock is there, now we wait for the museum to be finished. The ship was built by US Navy in 1945 as a tank landing ship (LST-1134). It was given on loan to the Thai Navy in 1966 and renamed by King Rama IX (the present King). The ship is 15.5m. tall and 98m. long and had a crew of 130.

Koh Phangan mainly consists of lush and raw unspoiled jungle, with many nice trails and view points which makes it ideal for some adventurous walking and climbing but also Mountain biking. Enjoy the beautiful nature, the lovely sound from birds (and some screaming monkeys), and breath taking views. Remember to wear good hiking shoes and if youre going to be late (watch the sunset) bring a som kind of lamp and insect repellent. Be sure to keep track of time to find your way back in the dark! Thai boxing, or Muay Thai as it is called, is very popular, not only by Thai people, also many forigners trevel to Thailand to learn and practise. There is three Muay Thai stadiums only in Thong Sala, one in Haad Rin and one stadium in Thong Nai Pan where regularly events are held. At Jungle Gym in Haad Rin and Thong Sala you can work out in the ordinary gym or learn Thai boxing techniques and grounds. Classes are available for both men and women, at different levels. Thai people take their cooking seriously. It should be simple, and no funny business. Basically its all about good and fresh ingredients cooked according to all the rules that they often learned as a child. Waterfalls

There are several waterfalls that can be visited on Koh Phangan if you get bored on the bech for a day. It can be a nice half-day trip out from wherever you are staying on the island if you fancy cooling off in one of the natural pools ceated under the falls. Some are more easy to access whilst others require a hike and can involve some tricky climbing. Bring proper shoes and check the most up-to-date local advice before venturing out. Than Sadet Waterfall is the biggest on Koh Phangan, located on the east side of Koh Phangan, about 15km. from Thong Sala. His majesty the kings of the Chakri dynasty such as King V, VI, VII, IX, and also Queen Rampaipannee have visited this waterfall and inscribed their initials and date when they visited on the stone at the waterfall. The waterfall originates from a stream running down from the mountain. The area around the waterfall is part of the national park because of its variety of the forest nature. Close to Thong Nai Pan is Than Prawet Waterfall, a series of tumble falls that continue inland for approximately 2km. If you crave for more of a hike then you should head for the Phaeng Waterfall, close to the middle of the island. It is a part of a protected National Park and is also the area in which you can head up to the stunning viewpoint, Phangans highetst point, the mountain, Khao Ra. Other waterfalls that can be visited on Koh Phangan are Wang Sai Waterfall, Paradise Waterfall near Haad Salad and Than Prapet Waterfall on the east coast.

IMPORTANT!

When you rent a motorbike or car, be careful to document all previous damages so you dont have to pay for things you did not cause. Some rental companies have systematized to get paid for the same damage several times. Highlight on paper, where the damage is and get the lessor to sign it, keep one copy for yourself. It can cost several thousand Baht if you must pay for repairs, even for small scratches. This applies even if you caused damages. Usually the rental cost do not include insurance, or that it does not apply to you as you not have valid driving license. In Thailand, everybody who drive motorbike or car must have a license for this, either a Thai-driving license or International driving licence that you must apply for home before your trip and bring wit you.

Getting around By Air The closest airport to Ko Phangan you can find at Ko Samui. They have regular flights from Bangkok and from other destinations to Ko Samui. From airport its a short ride to the pier that runs boats to Haad Rin on Ko Pha Ngan. An other option is to fly to Surat Thani (mainland) as the tickets to there are cheaper, but makes the trip a bit longer. From the airport to the pier and then a considerably longer ferry ride - add about four hours to your trip. Boat There are a number of different ferry companies taking passengers to Ko Phangan from Ko Samui, Ko Tao, and Surat Thani (Donsak Pier). If you are in a hurry you should travel with Lomprayah high speed catamaran, by far the fastest and also the newest boat, also the most expensive, with tickets ranging between 300 and 1,000 Thb. The second-fastest is Seatran and slightly less expensive than if you compare to Lomprayah. Notice that they have a new and old boat. The new being just as comfortable as the Lomprayah, it does not apply to the old one. Ask if the boat will be â&#x20AC;&#x153;Expressâ&#x20AC;? if they say yes, youre about 70% sure to get on the new boat. The Seatran gets you close to Samuis airport, they do not make the trip to Surat Thani. Songserm ferry is another decent option, operates to all ports but rather slow. The Raja Ferry is the car ferry. Slow but safe and pretty uncomfortable, the cheapest option around. The nightboat is the slowest option of them all if you want to reach the mainland.
