Dear Cattlemen & Friends, First of all, we want to take this opportunity to welcome you all to our 7th Annual Production Sale. We especially want to thank our return customers for your loyalty and our new customers for your interest in our program. Last year, when writing this letter, I was thankful that 2019 was over and was looking forward to 2020. Well… I guess we can truly say hindsight is 2020!! Our hearts go out to everyone negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and we thank the nurses, doctors, and ALL essential workers that have been working their tails off to keep this country running. The crop and cattle markets have been on a rollercoaster these last few months, but we are hopeful they will continue to straighten out and give producers some good opportunity for some profit. It took a lot of faith and grit for everyone to persevere, but we are glad to (once again) finally be in a New Year! We do not foresee too many changes to our sale this year. We welcome you to join us at your level of comfort whether in person, online, submitting bids to the sale staff, or calling on the phone. Masks are welcome, hand sanitizer will be available along with a COVID-safe lunch, and social distancing will be easily accomplished in the large sale arena. We are sticking with the earlier date that was set 2 years ago as it seems to work best for our customer base and hope this will allow you the opportunity to have your rsen bulls and heifers purchased before busy spring work hits. All heifers have been pelvic measured and confirmed Keith & Amanda La open. Bulls will once again not be semen tested before the sale as we prefer to take all of the bulls home so we can semen test every bull before delivery and fully guarantee fertility and performance. This gives us the opportunity to deliver your cattle at a later date and allows us to have plenty of time to visit you at your operation – our favorite part! During the last 10+ years in which we have been raising and selling purebred Red Angus and Simmental breeding stock, we have been striving toward total-herd improvement. We are confident we have the genetic and performance packages to fit your operation’s goals and your herd’s needs. Our cattle are bred with the commercial cattleman’s profitability in mind and they must thrive in real-world situations – nothing is spoiled or pampered here. Though we observe EPD’s as a useful tool, they are never the determining factor for our breeding decisions. We focus on performance and maternal genetics as we know the importance of producing muscle, eye appeal, and fleshiness on top of sound feet and legs. The calves were all raised at their mother’s side on native grass pastures with no creep. Calves were Pancake weaned on Labor Day and have been enjoying excellent pen conditions with the mild early-winter weather. We feed a mixed ration of corn silage, alfalfa, prairie hay, distillers grain and protein pellets. This ration allows them to show their growth potential without becoming too overly conditioned. It is our goal to have them in peak physical condition to be ready to work for you right away. And, remember, any heifers purchased on the sale can return to our ranch and be AI’d to any bull in our tank and later delivered to you at no extra charge. You are welcome to come to the ranch to view the cattle at any time. Their mothers will be up in the calving yards if you want to examine the dams. If the buyer prefers, we will take heifers home, AI them to any bull in our tank (some exceptions) or with semen provided by the buyer, and deliver them by May 15th.
-Save $25 per head for bulls taken home the day of the sale. Bulls will be kept free of charge until April 25th. Free Delivery within 150 miles. We will work with the buyer for distances further than that. -Bulls taken home by Homestake Ranch after the sale will be semen tested prior to delivery. BELOW IS A QUICK REFERENCE TO AN EXPLANATION OF EPD’S: Expected Progeny Differences “EPD’s” are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using the EPD differences between two sires EPD’s represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. (Listed below are the units ASA EPD’s are expressed in). (Average EPD’s are on the bottom of the percentile table above ) Calving Ease (CE) percentage of unassisted births when used on heifers. Birth Weight (BW) pounds of birth weight. Weaning Weight (WW) pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW) pounds of yearling weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) percentage of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Maternal Milk (MM) pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW) pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Stayability (Stay) percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Carcass Weight (CW) pounds of carcass weight. Yield Grade (YG) yield grade score. Yield grade is an indication of the yield of red meat within a carcass. It is calculated by using several factors including 1) fat thickness, 2)

kidney, pelvic and heart fat. 3) hot carcass weight 4) rib eye area. A (–) EPD is better. Marbling (MRB) marbling score. Indexes: The last two columns in the EPD section are fairly new to the Simmental breed, but interesting, they are $ indexes. Though EPD’s allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes blend EPD’s & economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. All Purpose Index: (API) It is exactly what it says, all purpose. This index includes every trait that can be calculated: calving ease, pounds at weaning and yearling, keeping replacements back, milking ability and stayability, then the calf crop. It took into consideration, some being retained as replacements, then the rest being fed out and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): This index is to be used if all calves are going to a feedlot. It evaluates a sire only for use on mature cows with all calves put on feed and sold grade and yield. No other factors were figured in. Using API and TI: First determine which index to use. If you’re breeding heifers and keeping replacements, use API. If all calves are going to the feedlot and finished, use TI.
