BREEDING FOR THE FUTURE PRODUCTION SALE, C-B SALE FACILITY // FEBRUARY 9, 2022 // 1PM
Welcome & Thank You for your interest in the 24th annual
BREEDING FOR THE FUTURE PRODUCTION SALE! There has been much said about the challenges of this past year with drought in the Dakotas, but with a new year comes new optimism. While our families have experienced the challenges that go along with farming and ranching, our greatest heartbreak was the loss of a young family member, this past May. I know there are some of you who may have lost someone close to you, as well. At times, it makes starting another day, difficult. We don’t intend to draw attention to our personal life in this letter, but we want to relate with the pain many are feeling and we pray and mourn with you.
time. We offer a $100 discount off of a Sale Day BULL purchase. Videos should be online around February 1st. A sale feature, this year, will be your choice of 2 sexed embryo packages that will be maternal sisters to WS Miss Sugar C4. Please, call if you have any questions regarding how the packages will be offered.
Our bull sale offering is much smaller, this year, yet the quality is deep. We have worked hard to deliver genetics that cover all of the bases. This group of bulls, once again, ranks high for growth, maternal and carcass EPDs. There are several bulls with bigtime power and growth numbers, as well as, several calving ease bulls to choose from. All EPDs are genomically enhanced and foot scores have been added for you to evaluate, this year. You are invited to view the bulls, ahead of
Our pray is for blessings upon you and your family for a safe, healthy and prosperous year. Thank you for your interest and all of your past support. We look forward to seeing you, again this year.
Morning beverages and delicious goodies will be available for our early guests. A HEARTY noon meal is served from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm.

F amily H ig hlig ht s
Joseph Clark was born to Jordan & Susan Schlenker in October 2021. He is very loved by his big sister, Alaura, and big brother, Joshua.
Myles & Cedee Michalak are the proud, big siblings of Alyse Marie, who was born to Amber (Schlenker) & Mike Michalak in November 2021. Oakley & Adelaide Schlenker (Jared’s kids) love exploring the ranch with their cousins Dawson, Quinn & Creed.
Jared Schlenker & Latasha Klatt welcomed Lawton Wayne into the world in November 2021. Jared relocated to western North Dakota in September 2021, where he now works as a welder.
Terry, Elroy (Grandpa Schlenker), Cassia & Garnet attended the 100th anniversary of the Sybrant Community Church near Bassett, NE. Terry’s mother, Laura, was raised in the sandhills of Nebraska and her family raised beef cattle. Terry accredits much of his passion for beef cattle to his roots there.
Quinn helped to load the tissue sample gun for Aunt Cass. Alaura & Joshua enjoyed getting to help our crew roundup, sort, and haul cows.
Creed helps to move a calf into the chute while working calves at pasture. Casyn (Ethan & Nichole’s son) takes a ranger ride with Grandpa.
Grandpa teaches Alaura how to fix the truck. 4

• 74J is a well put together bull that grew well, as you can see by his great indexes, and has some class. • He is backed by a very good cow family (one of the best on the ranch) going back to WS Miss Sabrina S166, who was a great donor cow around here for years. • He should make calves that grow and daughters that produce.

• This bull boasts a solid CE, coming in at 16.4 with better than -4 on BW. He also has a great API at 189.2 and good Marb. at .71 which are both in the top 1% of the breed. • All this is good, and then take a look at his MM which is a 29 and Stay. which pushes a 23, he should make productive females that stick around. 15

•Outcross• My (Aaron) philosophy throughout the years has always been “Breed for heifers, hope for bulls” as in the cattlemen’s/women’s world the bulls/steers pay the bills but a strong heifer crop will keep you in the business. In this situation I took the opposite approach... breeding for a bull, hoping for a heifer. With the combination of Empire and Zarzaparilla, “Inflation” brings you one of the most intriguing matings you’ll see this bull season. Stacked for carcass he comes in an easy fleshing package to sire the next generation of brood cows and muscle to add pounds to your calf crop. Look up his EPDs on the ASA as I expect he will improve upon his already impressive carcass numbers between print and sale day given his 19 184 Marb index! I plan to sample him AI in my own herd this spring.

Out of one of my (Aaron) favorite young cows he has been a “can’t miss” bull all year and stands among our biggest framed bulls in the sale. Out of a first calf heifer he solidified his bull status not only by his physical presence but his personal performance as he lists a progressive performance slash-line of 95/106/108 and a 141 Marb index! He also offers the advantage of breeding red offspring out of a predominantly black pedigree.

Genomics reinforced this wide based, PB bull’s low BW EPD and 70 lbs Act BW out of a second calver suggesting he should be reliable on heifers. Examination of his EPD profile will impress those of us seeking balance in all the measurables with 14 of 18 in the top 40% including 4% STAY, .70 Marb and 187 API. His dam and grandam display really nice udders and moderate frame scores! (Aaron)

•Outcross• One of the most complete bulls in the offering -touting a 189 API- “Buzz Word” is a bull I’ve (Aaron) had my eye on all year. Stacked for balance including a 1% ranked STAY he’ll catch your eye in the bull pen and back it up with calving ease, growth, carcass and soundness. EPDs of 7 of 18 in the top 5% and 14 of 18 in the top 20% raise him to an elite, small group of PB bulls breed wide. Bred as an outcross to Sugar and Beacon make him an intriguing breeding piece with countless mating options.

We are the only herd to have reported calves by Perseverance in the ASA database and they are good ones! I (Aaron) can’t fault them as they stand out in terms of eye appeal, length, power and -though this guy’s dam is a bit on the nervous sidesuperior dispositions. Here’s a chance to be the first ranch to use a new SimAngus bloodline from a sire I expect will be in high demand in the years to come.

WS MOTHER LODE W21 GRANDAM TO LOT 44

• A terrific, virgin 2-year-old bull out of the A76 donor cow • Should add lots of pounds to his calf crop • Granddam is the famed WS Mother Lode W21 cow who left her mark at Bichler Simmentals
BELOW IS A QUICK REFERENCE TO AN EXPLANATION OF EPD’S: kidney, pelvic and heart fat. 3) hot carcass weight 4) rib eye area. A (–) EPD is better. Marbling (MRB) marbling score. Indexes: The last two columns in the EPD section are fairly new to the Simmental breed, but interesting, they are $ indexes. Though EPD’s allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes blend EPD’s & economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. All Purpose Index: (API) It is exactly what it says, all purpose. This index includes every trait that can be calculated: calving ease, pounds at weaning and yearling, keeping replacements back, milking ability and stayability, then the calf crop. It took into consideration, some being retained as replacements, then the rest being fed out and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): This index is to be used if all calves are going to a feedlot. It evaluates a sire only for use on mature cows with all calves put on feed and sold grade and yield. No other factors were figured in. Using API and TI: First determine which index to use. If you’re breeding heifers and keeping replacements, use API. If all calves are going to the feedlot and finished, use TI.
Expected Progeny Differences “EPD’s” are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using the EPD differences between two sires EPD’s represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. (Listed below are the units ASA EPD’s are expressed in). (Average EPD’s are on the bottom of the percentile table above ) Calving Ease (CE) percentage of unassisted births when used on heifers. Birth Weight (BW) pounds of birth weight. Weaning Weight (WW) pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW) pounds of yearling weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) percentage of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Maternal Milk (MM) pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW) pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Stayability (Stay) percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Carcass Weight (CW) pounds of carcass weight. Yield Grade (YG) yield grade score. Yield grade is an indication of the yield of red meat within a carcass. It is calculated by using several factors including 1) fat thickness, 2)

BREEDING FOR THE FUTURE PRODUCTION SALE, C-B SALE FACILITY // FEBRUARY 9, 2022 // 1PM
Pastor David Earl Ross August 28, 1981 – May 16, 2021
My first communication with David was by letter, asking for permission to pursue a relationship with Makayla. My first thoughts were “Oh no, a prison inmate is interested in my daughter!” I was able to visit him a couple of years before his release and then both Cathy and I, a year later. He was and still is one of the most amazing individuals I have ever met. And it wasn’t because he was our son-in-law.
We had known David’s spiritual mentor, Larry, for many years. Larry’s slogan is “Redeeming the time.” That is exactly what the Lord and Larry instilled in David. While in prison, he ministered to many fellow inmates, some of whom spoke at his funeral and now have their own personal ministries. Within two years of his release, David had become the pastor of the local church, which is affiliated with a private Christian high school. The church and high schoolers loved him. We are so grateful for his faithfulness to his Lord & the impact he had on young & old, alike. As a family, we are devastated. Yet we cherish the few short years we had him. He challenged and enhanced our lives, as well. We are thankful for the love he had for Makayla and the three beautiful little girls (who are now: Neva 5 1/2, Selah 3 1/2 & Eden 19 months] he & Makayla were blessed to have welcomed into their family. He motivated & inspired the lives of many who met him. There were thousands all over the world praying for him during his brief illness. He will be forever in our hearts and forever young. Rest in peace, young man, until Jesus calls us all home. If God brings Makayla & the girls to your mind, prayer support would be appreciated. Thank you! May God be glorified.
