Schools have been entrusted with the responsibility of creating well informed and curious individuals, but have they really accomplished that? Although there has been a sizeable development in technology, the pedagogical systems have remained the same. How do we reimagine and reinstate the idea of a school which encourages freedom of thought and expression? The intent is to provide a platform for learners, not facilitators to take the reins. Young minds should be at liberty to create their own space thereby promoting autonomous learning.

The design comes from the fundamental principle of autonomous decision making. Brick and mortar walls have been replaced by white retractable screens which can be pulled from pilotis, by children themselves to create spaces of their own like. The idea of freedom of learning is encouraged as a student decides what kind of space he would like for the subject of interest. When retracted, the entire floor acts a pavilion for students where in group activities or gatherings may be held. On the contrary, a minimum space of 5 meters by 5 meters may be achieved for private and silent learning. Intermediate courtyards with trees bring in natural light all day long and provides ease of access to the roof. An open large space in the form of the roof creates a fun environment for children of all ages to come together and collaborate in various activities.

The Dharavi Streetscape
Guide : Ar. Nemish Shah Semester V Architectural Design Project Area : 2500 sq. m. Programme : Community Centre Site : Dharavi, Mumbai.
The ‘Streets of Dharavi’ are more spoken about than its settlements or inhabitants. These streets are the arteries of Dharavi, the heart of Mumbai. They have an aura of resilience and surprise and enhance the sense of community living. The street, as an entity in itself, revitalises the nature of the built form around it holistically.
The project intends to find a place in the symbiotic relationship between the built and the unbuilt in Dharavi. The building thus has a lively street cutting through its core, intertwining with the circulatory and spillout spaces, creating for some unusual, albeit fun streetscapes, much like the ones found in Dharavi.

The Outside - In Museum The House of Myths Hampi is characterised not only by its historical significance, but also by its scenic and surreal landscapes. Sugreev’s cave is one such site with a minimal human intervention and an abundance of surreal scenery. The outside in museum project intends to showcase the exterior along with the interior. The intervention hence becomes a museum for the context within which it sits in, along with the artefacts exhibited in it. Pause points choreographed with spaces allow the user to experience all the views from the best possible points. thus, the project intends to find a place within the relationship of the museum and the exterior, instead of the interior.

The Weave
COMPETITION
ENTRY
Collaborators : Reshma Mathew + Abhishek Ajwani The city of Paris is rightfully termed as ‘the cultural capital of the world’ because of its rich and diverse ethos and character. But one of the most tolerant cities of the world was shook by recent terror attacks that sent shockwaves around the world. The aim of this competition is to design a ‘Peace Pavilion’ in Paris. The pavilion should be a free standing structure that can host a variety of activities and exhibitions. The pavilion should strive to achieve social harmony and balance, and showcase a utopian world far from the ongoing dystopia.
The Weave is a pavilion designed in the Champs de Mars to celebrate community spirit. This pavilion is a simple sitting space built into an exhibition centre. The wooden tree growing through the roof is reminiscent of the love locks seen in France and some other parts of the world. It engages both the pedestrian above and the visitor below with the pavilion. The idea is for people; tourists and locals, both to leave behind messages not just for the victims but anyone who may visit the pavilion. A tradition of exchanging messages with anonymous readers could develop intangible ties of friendship.
The aesthetic quality, materiality, volume and form should add vitality, beauty and a sense of identity to the space, paying respect to the history and contextuality of the surrounding. The pavilion should be envisaged as an all weather structure that will be used for a broad range of daytime and nocturnal activities.
Ties of brotherhood grow through realisation of common grounds. In light of the recent acts of terror it becomes more important. The Weave intends to leave much of its use open to public whim. Public spaces must be at the liberty of the public use. In trying times it is spaces like these that act as gathering grounds for people to come together.
Documentation of La Martiniere (Constantia) Collaborators : Hitanshi Mehta + Jeel Makwana + Priya Bhatki The first impression of Constantia was akin to seeing a magnificently massive structure situated in the midst of a lush, green, well-manicured landscape. As of now, it is used as a school with boarding facilities, although the intricately painted cornices and vaults with stucco work hardly make it seem like any other educational institution. Luxury and whim are one of the key factors involved in the building of Constantia by way of Roman baths and monolithic stone statues of Greek gods and goddesses. The documentation experience was not only intense, but also very enjoyable. A number of tools including a laser pointer, strings and measuring tapes were used.
Furniture and Products
Paper Tube Sofa-Chair This product design excercise was held to use paper tubes as the only element in furniture and explore the various possibilities it had due to its unique nature.
Incremental Concrete Planters This product design exercise was introduced to imbibe a knowledge of the advantages and limitations of concrete. The planters made were of an asymmetric modular nature, allowing for growth to happen eventually.
Levitating Table+Bench+Lamp This furniture design exercise mandated the amalgamation of steel, concrete and wood, the basic building materials, within a larger theme of ‘LEVITATION’.
