A powerful indictment of Pope Benedict, and a searing assessment of the Catholic Church’s future.
R EL
On February 28, 2013, Benedict XVI became the first pope in nearly 600 years to resign. By doing so, Joseph Ratzinger, the man who became Benedict, also relinquished a controversial religious career in which he was largely responsible for the Catholic Church’s prodigious troubles: his scorched-earth assault on modernity and the world of ideas destroyed any hope of progress in the Church while leaving a trail of shattered lives in its wake. Thanks to his antediluvian teachings about human sexuality, bioethics, and Original Sin, Ratzinger helped the Church to remain a reactionary breeding ground for ultraconservative orthodoxy. Along the way, he enabled the moral and spiritual squalor of clerical child sex abuse that has led to a mass exodus from the pew. In this persuasive new book, author Daniel Gawthrop argues that Ratzinger must not be allowed diplomatic immunity from the abuse scandals that have rocked the Vatican. Gawthrop not only accuses Ratzinger of quitting to avoid dealing with an explosive new sex scandal, but also indicts him for promoting a toxic theology whose destructive impact can be felt far beyond the Church itself. As proof, the book examines Ratzinger’s career in all its infamy, from his medieval understanding of women and demonization of homosexuality to his war on liberation theology. It also offers insight into Ratzinger’s successor, Pope Francis I, and provocative ideas on how the Church can transform itself as a means to restore the faith of its disenchanted followers.
Daniel Gawthrop Daniel Gawthrop is the author of four previous books, including The Rice Queen Diaries (Arsenal) and Vanishing Halo: Saving the Boreal Forest (Greystone). He is a self-professed “lapsed Catholic” who has written extensively on the subject for numerous publications. He lives in Vancouver. danielgawthrop.com
During his eight years as pope, Ratzinger attempted to rebrand himself from “God’s Rottweiler” to Prince of Peace. The Trial of Pope Benedict reveals the true Ratzinger, in the process telling one of recent history’s most astonishing tales of institutional power, religious bullying, and systemic abuse. isbn 978-1-55152-527-3

A lively, wide-ranging visual history of muscular men from around the world.
R EL
Over the last 100 years, the image of the muscular man has known no boundaries; it has been the object of envy, admiration, and desire, and used to convey optimal health and fitness, product appeal, political power, and military might. Universal Hunks, David L. Chapman’s follow-up to American Hunks, is a captivating collection of historical images of muscular men from around the world beginning in the 19th century up until the 1970s, including photographs, posters, advertisements, magazine and comic book covers, and product packaging. The book considers the eroticized, politicized, and commercialized male image through history, and evaluates its fascinating cultural context by country and continent; culled from the author’s personal collections, it includes materials never published before, including images of Asian bodybuilders, European comicbook superheroes, African tribesmen, and muscleman posters from the Soviet Union. The book also features a foreword by cultural and sports historian Douglas Brown. Full-colour throughout, Universal Hunks is a thought-provoking and sexy visual tour of musclemen from all parts of the globe.

The celebrated essayist sheds necessary (and humorous) light on gender, sexuality, and family.
Moving, witty, and wise, S. Bear Bergman is an acclaimed writer and lecturer who travels regularly across North America to speak on trans issues. Bear’s first two books, Butch Is a Noun and The Nearest Exit May Be Behind You, are considered seminal texts on the subject of trans life. In this, hir third essay collection, Bear tackles the concept of the “modern family” as one of two trans parents of a young son; in Bear’s extended family “orchard,” drag sisters, leather mentors, sperm-donor parents, and other relations provide more branches of love and support than a mere family tree. Defiantly queer yet full of tenderness and hilarity, Blood, Marriage, Wine & Glitter is a beautifully thought-provoking essay collection that pushes at the parameters of gender norms and redefines the notion of what family is and can be. Bear’s poetry of butchness lets us see into facets of gender that usually aren’t so transparent. And made me fall in love with butches all over again. —Carol Queen, author Bergman’s writing style is witty, razor sharp and super smart. —Feministing

Clementine is a junior in high school who seems “normal” enough: she has friends, family, and even a boyfriend. But she can’t reciprocate his feelings toward her, so she breaks up with him. When her openly gay best friend takes her to a gay bar, she becomes captivated by Emma, a punkish, confident girl with blue hair, an event that leads Clementine to discover new aspects of herself, both passionate and tragic. Blue Angel is a tender, bittersweet, full-colour graphic novel about the elusive, reckless magic of love: a lesbian love story for the ages that bristles with the energy of youth, rebellion, and the eternal light of desire. First published in French by Belgium’s Glénat, the book has won several awards, including the Audience Prize at the Angoulême International Comics Festival, Europe’s largest. THE LABORATORY OF LOVE
The truth I seek lies beneath the skin, under flesh, below bone, beyond scalpel’s reach. In the 1990s, Patrick Roscoe was known as the great iconoclast of Canadian fiction. As author of such acclaimed short-story collections as Birthmarks and Beneath the Western Slopes and the novels God’s Peculiar Care and The Lost Oasis, his work revealed a deeply personal artfulness and a rare gift for language and character. After dropping out of sight for twelve years, Patrick reclaims his rightful place in the literary limelight with this powerful suite of short fiction set in Spain, Africa, California, and British Columbia. Haunted by wild dogs, tattoo artists, and murdered children, Patrick Roscoe’s characters—lonely, damaged, nomadic—are outsiders in an often brutal and punishing landscape whose disturbing darkness is illuminated by flashes of beauty. In Roscoe’s beguiling laboratory, science meets emotion in experiments that attempt to decipher the forces of love, loss, and longing.
Patrick Roscoe Patrick Roscoe was born on the Spanish island of Formentera. He is the author of seven previous novels and short-story collections published between 1990 and 2001. His widely published and anthologized fiction has won two Western Magazine Gold Medal Awards and a National Magazine Award, among others; his short fiction has also received two Distinguished Story citations from Best American Stories and is frequently selected for Best Canadian Stories. Patrick Roscoe currently divides his time between Canada, Spain, Mexico, and North Africa, but makes his home in Vancouver. patrickroscoe.com

Find him beside the creek, beyond the wooden bridge, where moss upholsters stones and roots, sponged green clings to winter water. Exposing spring has melted snow that covered him, melted flesh that draped him; his faith in me has faded with his breath, his bones have already bleached with broken trust, they don’t believe in my approach across rusted needles fallen from the towering pines. The creek insists upon the exuberant season, throws itself upon your slate skull, splashes through your silence. Billy, it’s me, remember. A fictionalized, meditative chronicle of life among the Innu in rural northeastern Quebec.
R EL S EA
KUESSIPAN
E
[Naomi Fontaine] writes in the same tradition as Native writers such as Thomas King and Louise Erdrich. —Le Devoir Kuessipan (“to you” in the Innu language) is an extraordinary, meditative novel about life among the Native Innu people in the wilds of northeastern Quebec. Naomi Fontaine, herself an Innu, wrote this novel (in French) at the age of twenty-three; with grace and perfect pitch, she depicts a community of nomadic hunters and fishers, and of hard-working mothers and their children, enduring a harsh, sometimes cruel reality with quiet dignity. Pervading the book is a palpable sense of place and time played out as a series of moments: elders who watch their kin grow up before their eyes; couples engaged in domestic crises, and young people undone by alcohol; caribou-skin drums that bring residents to their feet; and lives spent along a bay that reflects the beauty of the earth and the universal truth that life is a fleeting puzzle whose pieces must be put together before it can be fully lived. With poetic restraint and a documentary-like eye, Kuessipan is a remarkable and intimate portrait of a world that reads like no other. Kuessipan is currently being developed into a French-language motion picture by director Myriam Verreault for Max Films Inc. If you keep on going, there will be sand beneath your feet. You’ll taste the salty air. The sun will start to go down. The sky will put on a show. Let the waves give rhythm to your senses. You will be comforted. Just walk through those spruce trees. Then you’ll see the bay, the beach with its soft sand, the aluminum smelter, the islands, the river as wide as the sea. The ocean, where you came from.
Naomi Fontaine; translated by David Homel Naomi Fontaine, a member of the Innu First Nation, was born in Uashat, Quebec, a community with a population of less than 5,000. She was an education student when she wrote Kuessipan, her first novel, which she based on her own experience. She lives in Quebec City.
David Homel, born and raised in Chicago, is a Governor General Literary Award-winning translator and writer. His most recent books include the translations of The World is Moving around Me: A Memoir of the Haiti Earthquake (page 21), The Last Genet: A Writer in Revolt (page 22), and The Inverted Gaze (page 24) and his own novel Midway (Cormorant). ANATOMY OF A GIRL GANG
A sharply observed novel told in six voices, Anatomy of a Girl Gang is the powerful exploration of a young girl gang in Vancouver called the Black Roses, “the city’s worst nightmare”: Mac, the self-appointed leader and mastermind; Mercy, the Punjabi princess with a skill for theft; Kayos, their former classmate who gave birth to a daughter at age thirteen; Sly Girl, who fled her First Nations reserve for a better life, only to find depravity and addiction; and Z, a sixteen-year-old antiestablishment graffiti artist. Cast out by mainstream society, the five girls terrorize Vancouver with a primal, restless urgency, setting fire to the world around them as a way to erase their painful pasts. As they navigate from ATM robberies to cooking crack on the stove to savagely avenging the beating of one of their own, they hope and wait for better days that will turn into a better life, even as the darkness of fate draws inevitably nearer. Told with shocking and at times brutal honesty, Anatomy of a Girl Gang is a vivid and unnerving story of urban girl culture.

I have heard them tell their mothers they love them. But they don’t do that anymore. They don’t do any of that. Now, they rob and steal and sell people their medicine. Their breath hangs silver in the air as they smoke cigarettes, and walk fast—too fast—through these streets. My hardest streets. Where the people lie and cry and die in the alleyways, every single day. Did I know these girls would be here? Doing this? Maybe. But what could I do about it? What can I do, but watch? And contain it all. I know they still want to be loved. I know there is fear shining in the corners of their eyes. I know there are others who will become what they are.

THE OTHER SIDE OF YOUTH
E
Kelli Deeth’s first book since her acclaimed 2001 debut The Girl Without Anyone is a collection of stories about missed connections and unrequited desire, in which characters struggle internally and with each other over marriage, childlessness, adoption, adolescent longing, friendship, and death. In “Vera’s Room,” Holly, unable to conceive, negotiates a tense relationship with the seven-year-old girl she and her husband have adopted. In “Embrace,” Theresa, a young woman who has just had an abortion and is trying to survive alone in the big city, decides to give up on sexual desire and love a man, a divorced father, who can provide her with safety. And in “Sis”, Jenny moves back to Toronto from Winnipeg in order to start her life over and reconnect with her step-brother, with whom she shares a complicated past. These are stories about the vagaries of family and the narrow chasm between longing and grief; with a deft hand and a knowing eye, Kelli Deeth creates stories that are devastating, incisive portraits of dysfunction and desire. As she stood there, she could almost hear Michael’s voice, a firm voice that shook when he was upset. He would tell her to be happy with who she was, to hold her head up, to be proud of the choices she had made, because she had made them with her own wellbeing in mind. She and Michael were a family, and who was to say they were not? They were a family like anyone else; no one was missing, no one was wanted, no one would leave the other, and no one would be left alone to fend for themselves. The things they said to each other, over and over; words whose meanings brought little comfort, no matter how beautiful and logical they were, no matter how often they were said, who said them or who heard them, whose voice trembled or whose broke.
Kelli Deeth Kelli Deeth’s first book, The Girl Without Anyone, was chosen as one of The Globe and Mail’s Best Books of 2001. Her stories have been published in various journals and anthologies including Write Turns, Event, The Dalhousie Review, The Puritan, and Joyland. AFTER DELORES
Hilarious, hard-core … makes Bright Lights, Big City and Less Than Zero seem thin and dated. —Publishers Weekly This novel is as personal as any lyric poem. —Kathy Acker, Village Voice In this new edition of Sarah Schulman’s acclaimed 1988 novel, the unnamed narrator is a no-nonsense coffee-shop waitress in New York’s bohemian Lower East Side who is nursing a broken heart after her girlfriend Dolores leaves her for another woman. Over the course of a few days, she goes on the prowl looking for love, only to find herself immersed in a tangled web of seduction, deceit, and murder. Along the way, she meets a diverse array of characters, from Priscilla, a hot femme who leaves behind a tiny, pearl-handled gun, Punkette, a go-go dancer who works lunches in Newark, and Charlotte, a bewitching and brutal actress. This hilarious, unpredictable, sexy novel is a fast-paced flashback to the storefronts, underground clubs, and back alleys of the Lower East Side’s lesbian subculture in the 1980s—an electrifying chronicle of New York life featuring an edgy and totally original heroine.
Sarah Schulman Sarah Schulman is the author of sixteen books, including the novels The Mere Future, The Child, Rat Bohemia (all page 30), and Empathy and the recent nonfiction works The Gentrification of the Mind: Witness to a Lost Imagination and Israel/Palestine and the Queer International. PARIS IS BURNING
E
A Queer Film Classic
This latest addition to the Queer Film Classics series is an homage to Paris Is Burning, Jennie Livingston’s brilliant and award-winning 1991 documentary that captures the energy, ambition, wit, and struggle of African-American and Latino participants in the 1980s New York drag ball scene. An unlikely hit when it was first released, the film is a lively, touchingly empathetic portrait of urban drag culture, introducing such performers as Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija, and Angie Xtravaganza. Paris is Burning generated enthusiastic buzz from audiences and critics, as well as impassioned debate: did the film present a subversive perspective on the crass values of the 1980s, or did it exploit its subjects and pander to privileged movie audiences? Regardless, it is considered one of the key films of the New Queer Cinema, and resonates with audiences to this day. Author Lucas Hilderbrand contextualizes the film within the longer history of drag balls, the practices of documentary, the fervor of the culture wars, and issues of gender, sexuality, race, and class. QUEER FILM CLASSICS is a critically acclaimed book series that launched in 2009, edited by Thomas Waugh and Matthew Hays, covering some of the most important and influential films about and/or by LBTQ people made between 1950 and 2005, and written by leading LGBTQ film scholars and critics. For other Queer Film Classics titles, see page 26.

He is the author of Inherent Vice: Bootleg Histories of Videotape and Copyright and numerous essays on queer media histories. He is currently researching a book on the history of gay bars in the US. fall 2012 release
Adventures in Cute Culture Pamela Klaffke
Stories and Photographs of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Brad Cran & Gillian Jerome
Pamela Klaffke, author of Spree: A Cultural History of Shopping and herself an avid collector of cute since she was a child, takes readers on a journey through cute culture, from its origins in Japan where teenaged girls help drive the “cute” economy, to its modern-day manifestations in the bubblegum-coloured careers of performers like Katy Perry. The book also delves into the fanatical world of cute creators and collectors.
In moving photographs and first-person essays, Hope in Shadows offers an intimate and honest look at what it really means to live in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, Canada’s poorest neighbourhood. Photographs in the book, inspired by a highly successful calendar of the same name, are all taken by residents themselves, and will change the way you think about impoverished communities. THE ONLY POETRY THAT MATTERS Reading the Kootenay School of W riting Clint Burnham
Charles Demers Writer and comedian Charles Demers gets at the heart of Vancouver, shedding light on the various strategies and influences that have made the city what it is today (as well as what it should be). From a history of anti-Asian racism to a deconstruction of the city’s urban sprawl, Vancouver Special is a love letter to the city, taking a no-holds-barred look at Lotusland with verve, wit, and insight. Includes stunning photography by Emmanuel Buenviaje. hubert evans nonfiction prize finalist
Clint Burnham unpacks and demystifies the poets and poetry of the KSW, one of Canada’s most prominent language poetry groups. He argues that it matters because of its materiality, its politics, and how the writing, rather than offering a ready-made message, passes the work onto the reader, allowing the reader to create meaning. SHOOT IT!
Hollywood Inc. and the Rising of I ndependent Film David Spaner
AFTER CANAAN
Essays on Race, Writing, and Region Wayde Compton
Shoot It! is a revealing history of how Hollywood, with its eye on the bottom line, lost its ability to support the work of creative filmmakers; it is also a passionate portrait of the American independents, and others outside the studio system, who have risen up to fill the void.
In these varied essays, Compton marks the passing of old modes of anti-racism and multiculturalism, and points toward what may or may not be a “post-racial” future, but will, without doubt, be a brave new world of cultural perception. vancouver book award finalist

After Canaan engages critically and materially with race in a way that hasn’t been done before, courageously critiquing Canada’s refusal to account for or legitimize the experience of racial ambiguity.—Quill & Quire (starred review)

A Life in Punk Joe Keithley
Joe “Shithead” Keithley founded legendary punk pioneers D.O.A. in 1978. I, Shithead is Joe’s personal, no-bullshit recollections of a life in punk, starting with the burgeoning punk movement, and traversing a generation disillusioned with the status quo who believed they could change the world, conquering all manner of obstacles through sheer determination.

The punk band D.O.A., established in 1978, is considered one of the founders of hardcore punk; their raw, melodic sound, which drew comparisons to the Clash and the Ramones, has always been matched by the band’s acute political sensibility. This large-format book is a sprawling full-colour visual history that offers a visceral glimpse into the hardcore life of one of the hardest-working bands in the business.

THE LAST GENET
ANARCHY AND ART
A Writer in Revolt Hadrien Laroche, translated by David Homel
From the Paris Commune to the Fall of the Berlin Wall Allan Antliff
The Last Genet is a careful philosophical and historical reading of the last eighteen years in the life of Jean Genet, during which time he became intimately involved with the plight of the oppressed (the Black Panthers, the Palestinians, the Baader Meinhof). [Genet’s] last journey, as revealed by Laroche, is imbued with beauty, metamorphosis and emancipation on one hand, and monstrosity, nihilism and hopelessness on the other. An indispensible study for readers interested in Genet, the Black Panthers, the Palestinian/Israeli conflict or, more generally, the philosophy of humanism. —Kirkus Reviews
In numerous essays, Allan Antliff interrogates moments of engagement when anarchist artists, poets, philosophers, and critics have confronted pivotal events over the past 135 years. A thoughtful discussion of art’s potential as a conduit for revolution and meaningful social change. —Midwest Book Review Antliff’s research has yielded a new theoretical insight into a genre not often considered. —Bookforum

HOW POETRY SAVED MY LIFE
THE DICTIONARY OF HOMOPHOBIA
A Hustler’s Memoir Amber Dawn
A Global History of Gay & Lesbian Experience Louis-Georges Tin (ed)
The follow-up to Amber Dawn’s Lambda Award-winning novel Sub Rosa: a memoir about the terrain of sex work, queer identity, and survivor pride. This story, told in prose and poetry, offers a frank, multifaceted portrait of the author’s experiences hustling the streets of Vancouver, and the how those years took away her self-esteem and nearly destroyed her; at the crux of this autobiographical narrative is the tender celebration of poetry and literature, which acted as a lifeline during her most pivotal moments.
Based on the work of over 70 researchers in 15 countries, The Dictionary of Homophobia is a mammoth, encyclopedic book that documents the history of homosexuality, and various cultural responses to it, in all regions of the world: a masterful, engaged, and wholly relevant study that traces the political and social emancipation of a culture. The Dictionary of Homophobia is the best book on gay history ever written… Knowledge is power. And in a world where homosexuality is all too often a crime, this book is the weapon we need. —InsightOut

BEAUTY PLUS PITY
Ashok Mathur
Kevin Chong
This fantastical historical novel, narrated by a child yet to be born, traces the lives of three generations of a Parsi family in India from the late 1800s to present day. The narrative follows the family from the intricacies of village life in the jungles of central India to the complications of urban life in turbulent pre- and post-independence struggles to contemporary diasporic realities in the United Kingdom and North America.
A modern immigrant’s tale about a slacker twentysomething Asian-Canadian living in Vancouver who is about to embark on a modelling career when his life is suddenly derailed by two near-simultaneous events: the death of his filmmaker father, and the betrayal of his fiancée who has left him. Soon he meets Hadley, the half-sister he never knew existed—the result of his father’s extramarital affair. A little beauty of a novel: funny, wise, and subtly heartbreaking ... In her third story collection, Ivan focuses her attention on urban life—old, young, gay, straight, white, black, Asian—communing at local coffee bars over hot rods, the art of skinny-dipping, and changes in the weather. With the calm, observant eye of a master storyteller, Ivan E. Coyote shows us how to break free of the rigors of authority and be true to ourselves, warts and all.

Ivan E. Coyote
[Ivan] proves to be a natural-born storyteller. —Globe and Mail What makes Coyote’s stories special—her humour, her humanity, her talent for sketching the bizarre in the everyday—soars beyond cliche. —Toronto Star
Ivan’s first collection: connected stories whose female narrators seek out lives amidst the lonely, breathtaking landscape of the Yukon. Startling in their intimacy, these tales make up a moving scrapbook of what it’s like to be a young queer woman in the North, journeys imbued with the colours of a prescient sexuality and an honest heart.

Ivan Coyote’s second collection of stories about being queer and searching out new frontiers on the road and on the homefront. Coyote paints beautiful, wry, and honest portraits of life, the road, and the spirits within.

Amber Dawn
Ivan’s first novel is a breathtaking story about love and loneliness, and the long road one must travel between them. Joey is a good-hearted, fortysomething mechanic from small-town Alberta whose wife has recently left him for another woman; his life changes when he agrees to exchange a beatup Volvo for a beautiful handcrafted cello.
In this stunning debut novel, Amber Dawn subverts and transgresses the classic hero’s quest adventure to create a dark postfeminist vision about a teenaged runaway initiated into a family of magical prostitutes. See also How Poetry Saved My Life (page 29). lambda literary award winner

CROSSINGS
THE MERE FUTURE
Betty Lambert
Sarah Schulman In this dystopian vision, New York City has morphed into an idealized version of itself, the result of what the newly elected mayor calls “The Big Change.” Rent is cheap, homelessness is over, and everyone works in Marketing. Calling on all genres, Schulman invents a literature that reflects the lives we live right now, while being funny, sexy, and open-hearted. Schulman is also the author of Empathy, After Delores (page 12), The Child (below), and Rat Bohemia (below).
Crossings was Betty Lambert’s only novel; published by Pulp Press in 1979, it was revolutionary for its frank and unsettling portrayal of Vicky, a female writer in Vancouver in the early 1960s, an educated and intelligent woman who struggles to come to terms with herself as she navigates an emotionally abusive relationship with Mik, a violent logger and ex-con. This new edition includes an introduction by writer Claudia Casper.

RAT BOHEMIA
Sarah Schulman
Sarah Schulman
The Child explores the parameters of queer teen sexuality against a backdrop of hysteria and sanctioned homophobia. Stew is a fifteen-year-old boy who goes online looking for an older man to have sex with. But when his older boyfriend is arrested in an Internet pedophilia sting, his life is exposed to his family and town. lambda literary award finalist
First published in 1995, this award-winning novel, written from the epicentre of the AIDS crisis, is a bold, achingly honest story set in the “rat bohemia” of New York City, whose huddled masses include gay men and lesbians who bond with one another in the wake of loss.

Gabriella Goliger Girl Unwrapped is a coming-of-age story set in 1960s Montreal. Toni Goldblatt’s awakening to taboo desire conflicts with the expectations of her Holocaust-scarred parents and with the conservative mores of her times.
When it was first published in 1988, Pat Califia’s Macho Sluts, a collection of S/M stories set in San Francisco’s dyke bathhouses, sex parties, and S/M gay bars, shocked the lesbian community and caused an upheaval in the field of queer publishing. SONG OF THE LOON
The writing has the directness and whimsicality of primitive paintings—it is like spiked gingerbread or surprising samplers. —Village Voice

In these linked tales, urban outlaws in Toronto map out their plans to take over the world while living collectively in an abandoned chair factory. Their community is infiltrated by the King, a dirty cop bent on obliterating the city’s defiant underclass and exterminating the group’s rogue members; in order to survive, they may have to betray what they value most: autonomy, friendship, and newly discovered concepts of freedom.

Larissa Lai
An intimate and evocative poetry collection that depicts the sinking of the Titanic in a series of poetic snapshots. Based on historical research the author conducted in Belfast and his birthplace of Halifax, the poems document not only the history behind the ship’s construction, but what life must have been like for those aboard her maiden voyage and in the years following her sinking.
With an ear to the fizz of advertising, pop music, CNN, biotechnology, the Norton Anthology of English Literature, and cereal packaging, Lai explores the problem of what it means to exist on the boundaries of the human.
