Head Coach Larry Friend

Coach Larry Friend Third Year Head Coach (11-24-3, 1-13-0) 15th Season at Air Force USAFA 1985

Larry Friend enters his third season as head coach of the United States Air Force Academy women's soccer program. He is the second head coach to lead the Falcons in their 18-year history. Friend had the unenviable task of competing in a tough Mountain West Conference his first year in 2009 with one of the youngest teams in the nation. The 2009 Falcons featured 12 freshmen and 11 sophomores, and just three upperclassmen. With the lack of experienced players, the Falcons posted a 2-15-1 record. Sophomore forward Bridgett Murphy was one of AFA’s bright spots, earning her second All-Mountain West Conference honor. The bumps and bruises of playing with such a yount team in 2009 paid off last year, as a more experienced 2010 squad improved by six wins, to a succussful 8-9-2 record, despite having no seniors on the team. The eight wins were the most since 2001 and the program had its fewest losses ever in the Div. I era. Air Force scored 21 goals on the season, doubling the 10 goals scored in 2009. The Falcon defense had a fantastic season, allowing 0.91 goals per game and producing seven shutouts. The 0.91 GAA average was the second-lowest in school history and the lowest since joining the MW. Friend was an assistant at Air Force from 19921996 and 2002-2008. He started the women's soccer program with former head coach Marty Buckley while on active duty in 1992. In their second season, the team broke into the top 20 of the NCAA Division II weekly rankings. They continued to improve each year with consistent top 20 NCAA rankings. By the fourth season, the 1995 team achieved a 14-3-2 record with an NCAA Division II ranking of seventh in the nation. They missed the NCAA championship round of eight by one slot, but produced their first All American selection that season. In 1996, Friend helped Buckley and the Falcons transition from Division II to Division I. They coached the team to its first Division I tournament appearance in the Western Athletic Conference Championships. In 1997, Friend returned to his flying career. After 12 years as an assistant coach, Friend looked forward to the challenge as head coach. Friend feels that the Air Force Academy women's soccer program has and will continue to produce officers who are prepared to serve in the United States Air Force. "Participating in a competitive team environment provides our young women with the tools and life lessons necessary to lead others in the Air Force," Friend said. "Many past graduates have gone on to lead as pilots, doctors, lawyers, in aircraft maintenance, as general aides and numerous other exciting careers in the Air Force."

2011 Air Force Women’s Soccer

The team has competed in the Mountain West Conference since 1999. The conference is nationally competitive and normally ranked in the top 10 out of all NCAA Division I conferences. The Falcons have struggled to meet this competitive challenge, but Friend is looking towards changing that. "The Academy is a tough environment that can be taken advantage of only by individuals seeking a real challenge rewarded by incredible opportunities," Friend said. "Our players are ready and excited to expand their challenge to the soccer field." Friend calls Columbia, Md., his hometown. His father, Joseph F. Friend, moved the family to Columbia in 1969 and retired from the Navy in 1971. Friend graduated from Wilde Lake High School in 1980, where he was team captain of the soccer team and a member of the 1976 state championship team. Friend went on to the Air Force Academy and played for coach Luis Sagastume as a four-year starter and team captain on the men's team. His teams compiled a 46-24-7 record, during which time he earned all-league honors four times and was selected to the all-midwest region team his junior year. Friend is ranked third in the men's program for career assists and 20th for most points overall. He was selected by his teammates as Best Offensive and Most Inspirational player in two different seasons. Friend continued his soccer career after graduating from the Academy in 1985 to include playing overseas for the Japanese team Sukazan while on active duty. He also competed for four years on the all-Air Force soccer team in the late 80s. He captained the team twice during his playing career and led them to a pair of inter-service championships. Friend was selected to the United States All-Armed Forces Team all four years. He was selected team captain of the U.S. Armed Forces team and led them to a 1990 North American Championship in Victoria, Canada. This victory qualified the U.S. for the 1991 Military World Football Championship in Holland.

selected as "top stick" in both the contact and final phase of training. In 1987, Friend began a two-year tour at Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan, as a combat search and rescue pilot with the 33rd Air Rescue Squadron. He was credited with two Joint Chiefs of Staff contingency (JCS) missions in the Philippines and one life saved in Japan. In 1989, Friend was assigned to the 41st Air Rescue Squadron at Patrick AFB, Fla., as an instructor pilot and NASA shuttle liaison officer. Friend flew numerous rescue support flights for space shuttle launches and supplied navigation stations in the Bahamas. He was lauded for his efforts by the Secretary of Defense on a highly sensitive JCS mission and credited with assist for a life saved off the coast of Florida. In 1992, Friend had his first stint coaching soccer and instructing at the Air Force Academy. Friend was honored with the Outstanding Military Educator of the Year award in 1995. This is the highest award the Academy bestows on its instructors. In 1997, Friend was assigned to the 1st Helicopter Squadron at Andrews AFB, Md., to fly Bell UH1 Hueys. His unit supported classified emergency action programs for the national capital region. He also flew VIPs such as the President of Egypt and the Vice President of the United States. He returned to the Academy in 2001. Friend earned a master's degree in sport administration from the University of Northern Colorado in 1994. His professional military education includes Squadron Officer School in 1989 and Air Command and Staff College in 1999. Friend and his wife, Maribeth, have been married 22 years and have three children, Corey, Carina, and Felicia.

Friend ended his playing career after the Military World Championships in 1991 and moved on to the coaching ranks. He received his United States Soccer Federation "A" license in 1994 and his Federation Goalkeeper license in 2007. Friend has worked with the state and region Olympic Development Programs since 1992. He has coached numerous competitive and developmental soccer teams in Colorado and Maryland. He has also been an assistant coach with the Air Force Academy men's soccer program for two seasons under coach Sagastume. Friend retired from the Air Force in 2005 after 20 years of service. He flew over 2,000 hours as an instructor pilot on search and rescue and VIP helicopters. Friend completed helicopter pilot training at Fort Rucker Army Post, Ala., in 1986 where he was

2011 Season Outlook Tell us about your seniors? We have four great seniors who lead this team on and off the field. I expect the group of Krystin Shanklin, Bridgett Murphy, Meagan Eissele and Cassie Wilson to have a great season. Cassie and Meagan will anchor our defense. Krystin will hold the midfield and Bridgett is always a threat up top. We will miss fellow senior Kelly Bieber this season. She chose to go onto an exchange semester in Spain and we wish her the best.

#23 Eryn Avjian, #16 Sophia Lockerby, #19 Leah Bratt and #18 Stephanie Patterson Expectations are higher than ever for Air Force women’s soccer as it enters the 2011 season. With 10 starters returning off the 2010 team that posted an 8-9-2 record, the program’s winningest team since 2001, Falcon women’s soccer is looking to continue its rise under third-year head coach Larry Friend. After taking their lumps as freshmen and sophomores, where they saw just five wins combined during those two seasons, the senior class helped lead the Falcons to the second-most wins in the Div. I and Mountain West era last year. The senior class of defenders Meagan Eissele and Cassie Wilson, midfielder Krystin Shanklin and forward Bridgett Murphy, feature three four-year starters and have combined for 173 starts, making it one of the most experienced seniors classes in school history. Backing the senior class is a talented junior class, led by forward Stephanie Patterson, Air Force’s leading point-scorer each of the last two seasons. Air Force’s sophomore class is anchored by goalkeeper Kelly Stambaugh, who’s 0.98 goalsagainst-average was the second-lowest in school history.

The Falcons add 13 newcomers, including 11 freshmen, to complement the 12 returners. With the strong leadership and experience of the senior class, an up-and-coming junior and sophomore group and the addition of another talented freshman crop, Air Force looks for this blend of classes to combine towards another successful season. Friend took some time from his busy preseason schedule to talk a little about his team as it enters the 2011 season. How has the success of 2010 helped as you get ready for the 2011 season? I’m excited about the Falcons because of the quality people who are involved in the program. We want to continue building on last year’s turn around.

We won more games last fall than the three previous fall seasons combined. We had the lowest goals against average and the most shutouts in the history of our program at the Division I level. That is a testament to the hard work and dedication our players and staff have put into making AFA soccer successful. Our future looks promising. We have been working on changing the culture of this program and feel we are on the right track. Our team chose three words to describe our new culture in the fall of 2010. We will carry our motto of “COMMITTED, RELENTLESS, UNITED” into 2011. We don’t accept anything below our best effort. The entire team has been working hard in the preseason and look forward to our strong effort carrying over into the season.

How is your junior class? Our returning juniors, Stephanie Patterson, Eryn Avjian and Sophia Lockerby have taken ownership in our vision and goals. Sophia, and Eryn will be helping our midfield and Stephanie, who has led our team in scoring her first two years here, is looking to have a breakout year up top. Fellow junior Kim Koeppen has one year of eligibility left and has chosen to sit this year out. She will play her senior year and finish with her classmates. She has elected to go on an exchange at West Point and we wish her the best. How about the sophomores? Our sophomores finished a demanding freshman year and are ready for their second season. We look for Kelly Stambaugh to continue and build upon her dominant 2010 as our goalkeeper. Leah Bratt will add to our midfield. Loren Catchpole and Megan Dozier are both coming back from ACL injuries. We hope to see them soon. Loren adds a defensive presence for us and Megan is always dangerous around the net. Kaleigh Moses will see time in the defense and midfield. Ariel Saltin and Abigail Buns joined our team in the spring and provide added depth. Abby is a defender and Ariel is a composed player up top. And how are the freshmen looking? We have a solid new class of freshmen. We expect some to start right away and others will definitely see time on the field. Our freshmen include Hallie Koeppen (GK), Hannah Schwartz (GK), Kelsey Orvin (D), Rahni Giardina (D), Kylie Williamson (D), McKenna Fox (M), McKenna Kimball (M), Tori Gullo (M) and Felicia Sturgeon (M). In addition, we are excited to see Casey Philbin (D) and Paige SaxtonGetty (D) return from injury as we approach conference play. Goalkeeper Kelly Stambaugh

Tell us about the new coaching staff? We have some new coaches, staff members, and support people that are bringing positive energy each day. Our new assistant coaches Kiha Sutta, Robin Grossman and Brian Lux are all working hard and pushing the players to a higher standard. They bring a lot of experience to our coaching staff and it is a pleasure to work with them.

The Mountain West On July 1, 1999, the Mountain West Conference began official operations with a membership composed of eight Division I-A institutions. The conference features the Air Force Academy, Brigham Young University, Colorado State University, University of New Mexico, San Diego State University, UNLV, University of Utah and University of Wyoming. Also joining the conference for the 2005-06 season was TCU, which left Conference USA. The first eight member schools collectively decided to form a smaller conference and foster the traditional rivalries that were born in the ‘70s and ‘80s. BYU, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming were charter members of the Western Athletic Conference when it was founded in 1962, and Colorado State (1968), San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980),

were long-standing members heading into the 1990s. UNLV joined the group in 1996 and TCU in 2005. In 2011, the Mountain West lost BYU and Utah but gained Boise State. Fresno State, Nevada and Hawai’i (football only) join the conference in 201213. The MWC crowns champions in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track & field, and women’s volleyball. The top six of seven teams will be invited to the women’s soccer championships, Nov. 2-6, in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Air Force Academy The United States Air Force Academy offers a fouryear program of instruction and experience designed to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. COURSE OF STUDY Cadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that provides the knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential to a career Air Force officer. The entire USAFA experience is integrated and mapped to achieve a set of desired outcomes in every graduate. The core academic curriculum includes courses in basic sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities. Cadets take additional elective courses to complete requirements for one of 32 major areas of study. About 50 percent of the cadets complete majors in science and engineering; the remainder graduate in the social sciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management, aeronautical engineering, foreign area studies, history, behavioral science, civil engineering, astronautical engineering, electrical engineering and engineering mechanics. FACULTY COMPOSITION The majority of the Academy's faculty members, more than 500 total, are Air Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-officer volunteers who have established outstanding records of performance and dedication. Each has at least a master's degree and more than 55 percent have doctorates or other terminal degrees in their field of study. About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring great depth of disciplinary and educational expertise and provide academic stability and continuity. Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning as an integral part of their officer development. The Air Force Academy has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for the most accessible and involved faculty for four years in a row. To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academy has several distinguished visiting professors and endowed professors who serve one or more years. Officers from other services, as well as officers from allied countries are also members of the faculty. Distinguished civilian and military lecturers also share their expertise with the cadets during the academic year. ATHLETIC PROGRAM The Academy's athletic program is designed to improve physical fitness, teach athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To achieve

its goals, the Academy offers some of the most extensive physical education, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets take at least three different physical education courses each year. MILITARY EDUCATION AND TRAINING An air, space and cyberspace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins with basic cadet training and continues throughout the four years. Seniors are responsible for the organizational leadership of the cadet wing, while juniors and sophomores seek to develop team and interpersonal leadership and instructional skills. Cadets are projected into as many active leadership roles as possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force officers. Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -- are emphasized the first summer during basic cadet training. Freshmen then study the military role in United States society as well as the mission and organization of the Air Force. Sophomores receive instruction in communication skills and juniors study the combat and operational aspects of the Air Force. The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and parachuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets may fly light aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team. Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week training periods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet is required to complete two training periods each summer with leave during the other period. All new cadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their first summer. Combat survival training is a required three-week program during cadets' second summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have options such as working with Airmen in an operational unit at an Air Force installation, airborne parachute training, soaring or basic free-fall parachute training. During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership training as supervisors or instructors in the summer programs listed above. Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the education program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and forensics are a few of the programs available. NOMINATIONS Nominations to the Academy may be obtained through a congressional sponsor or by meeting eligibility criteria in other categories of competition established by law. For information on admission procedures, write to HQ USAFA/RRS; 2304 Cadet Drive, Suite 200; USAF Academy, CO 80840-5025 or go to www.usafa.edu.

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military educators was appointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet the needs of the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Force requirements could not be met by expanding the other service academies and recommended an Air Force Academy be established without delay. In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed a commission to assist in selecting a site and on April 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air Force Academy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commission narrowed the choice to three locations. The summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott selected a site near Colorado Springs, Colo. Colorado contributed $1 million toward purchase of the property. In July 1955, the first Academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while construction began. It was sufficiently completed for occupancy by the cadet wing in late August 1958. Initial construction cost was $142 million. Women entered the Academy on June 28, 1976, as members of the class of 1980.

Director of Athletics

Dr. Hans J. Mueh Director of Athletics Dr. Hans J. Mueh is in his eighth year as the director of athletics at the Air Force Academy. A retired Air Force brigadier general, Mueh was vice dean of faculty for two years prior to his retirement from active duty in the summer of 2004. Mueh was heavily involved in Academy athletics before becoming director of athletics. He was the Academy's faculty athletics representative from 1996-2004 and was a long-time member of the board of directors for the Air Force Academy Athletics Association. Since becoming the director of athletics, Mueh has led the Academy to some remarkable feats. In 2007, the Academy was one of only three schools (Michigan State and Boston College) to reach post-season play in football (2007), men’s basketball and ice hockey (200607). It marked the first time a service academy has ever had a team compete in the post-season in all three sports. In addition, under Mueh’s watch the men’s basketball team has played in another NCAA tournament and the National Invitational Tournament’s Final Four. The ice hockey team has won the conference championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament four of the last five years. Mueh was on the selection committee that hired current head coach Frank Serratore and led the Academy’s move into the Athletic Hockey Association. The football program, the Academy’s flagship sport, has gone through a major overhaul under Mueh. He led the transition from the retirement of the legendary Fisher DeBerry after 23 years at the helm to hiring current head coach Troy Calhoun, a 1989 Academy graduate. Calhoun’s impact was immediate, leading the Falcons to a 9-4 overall mark and a secondplace finish in the Mountain West Conference in 2007. The Falcons qualified for their first bowl game in five years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2007. The program then posted back-to-back eight-win seasons and was 9-4 last year while qualifying for bowl games every year. The school has averaged 9,000 bowl tickets sold during the four-year run.

Eighth Year

The $15 million facility was completed in July 2011. Mueh has also been active within the conference and the NCAA. He was recently selected to be part of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet and has been active on the NCAA’s academics/eligibility compliance cabinet, the men’s golf committee and the region 7 postgraduate scholarship committee. Mueh has been equally active within the conference on various leadership committees. He is currently on the awards and recognition committee and has previously served on the joint council executive committee, and committees on championships, television and sportsmanship. Before assuming his duties as vice dean at the Academy, Mueh was permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry at the Academy, a position he held since October 1987 where he oversaw the annual design and instruction of 25 undergraduate courses for 1,500 cadets annually. Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1951. He entered the Air Force in 1962 as a member of the Academy's eighth graduating class, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1966. While at the Academy, Mueh was a two-year letterwinner in soccer as a goalie. He still holds the Academy record for saves in a game with 30, accomplishing it twice in 1965 against North Carolina and Benedictine. In his junior and senior years, Mueh helped the Falcons to the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League championship and quarterfinal berths in the NCAA tournament. He was a first-team all-league selection in 1965. Following graduation, Mueh completed two assignments in intelligence before attending the University of Wisconsin where he earned his master's degree in chemistry in 1970. He later earned a doctorate degree in chemistry from Wisconsin in 1976 as a distinguished

graduate. He has also completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College. Between earning the two degrees, Mueh returned to the Academy as an instructor in the department of chemistry from 1970-72. He also served as assistant soccer coach and played semi-pro soccer with the Aurora Internationals in Denver during those two years, leading the Internationals to the Colorado state title in 1971. He volunteered for duty in Vietnam and served as an intelligence officer in Saigon, Republic of Vietnam and at Nakhon Phanom RTAB, Thailand, in 1972 and 1973. After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh returned to the Academy in 1976 as an associate professor of chemistry. He remained at the Academy except for a stint in 1985-86 as the special assistant for technical matters at the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon. In 1986, he assumed the position of acting head, department of chemistry, before being selected for his position of permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry in 1987. As faculty athletics representative, he was active in both the Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West Conference, and was the Academy's representative on the transition team to form the new MWC, the only faculty athletics representative on the team. He competes in golf, racquetball, handball and tennis, and has promoted Air Force Academy intercollegiate sports throughout his tenure, beginning with work as chairman of the hockey eligibility committee, officer representative to the men's golf team and five years as the officer representative to the football team. Mueh is married to the former Sally Flax of Cincinnati, Ohio. They have three children: Kristine, Kurt and Deborah.

Dr. Hans Mueh enters his eighth season as the Academy’s Director of Athletics. At halftime of the Utah game on Oct. 30, 2010, Mueh congratulated the men’s gymnastics team for winning the USAG National Championship.

Mueh has been just as successful behind the scenes with the administration of the department. Mueh restructured the department with an internal/external model that has streamlined resources and made the department more effective from top to bottom. In addition, he has the department on course to become a federally chartered non-profit organization which will lead to more fund-raising opportunities. Mueh was instrumental in the USAFA Endowment and the announcement of the Holaday Athletic Center, an indoor training facility.

Air Force Athletics

Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive as the Air Force Academy's. The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical conditioning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teach leadership in a competitive environment and to build character. There are three subdivisions of the athletic program: intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and physical education. The intercollegiate program has 17 men's and 10 women's NCAAsanctioned teams, facing some of the top competition in the nation. Men’s teams are football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. The Academy fields women's teams in basketball, cross-country, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two nonNCAA programs; boxing and cheerleading. The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete in this conference against teams from Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, TCU, UNLV and Wyoming. All sports also compete against non-conference opponents, including many nationally-ranked teams.

The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have won the trophy 17 times, which is more than any other academy. The winner of the annual rivalry visits the White House to have the trophy presented by the President of the United States. The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in the country. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6 million building is five stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three football fields laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketball arena, ice hockey arena and multipurpose area. The three sections have a combined seating capacity of more than 9,000. Clune Arena seats 5,858. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity of 2,470, while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and field competitions. The department’s newest facility, the Holaday Athletic Center (pictured left), was completed in July 2011.
