2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • Season Outlook
2013-14 Senior Class (L-R) Kaleigh Moses Megan Dozier Kelly Stambaugh Loren Catchpole Leah Bratt
Air Force women’s soccer kicks-off its 22nd season Aug. 23 against Montana. Featuring one of the youngest teams in program history, the 2013 Falcons will be learning on the fly. Head coach Larry Friend, in his fifth year at the helm, will lean on his 13 returning letterwinners as the 12 newcomers get accustomed to DIv. I soccer. The Falcons are coming off a 5-9-3 season in 2012 and return six starters to the pitch. Despite the loss of five starters and several letterwinners from 2012, the Falcons return several key players. Air Force features three seniors with three years of starting experience, in goalkeeper Kelly Stambaugh and midfielders Leah Bratt and Kaleigh Moses. In addition, Team Co-Defensive MVPs senior Loren Catchpole and junior Kyle Williamson return. Also returning, is senior forward Megan Dozier, who led the team in assists a season ago, to bolster the Falcon offense. A talented freshman group, including an emerging sophomore class, will be called upon to fill out the lineup for AFA. With just weeks to prepare for the season, Friend and his Fledgling
Falcons will have a quick learning curve as they enter 2013. Friend took a moment from preparing for the upcoming season to talk about his 2013 team.
With their club background, our freshmen come to the Academy with a high knowledge of the game. That has allowed them to pick up our concepts quickly and progress towards our first game of the season.
Q: How has the team looked so far in preseason practices?
Q: Despite having such a young team, you still have a solid core of upperclassmen. Is there added responsibility for them to help guide this young team?
A: The practices have been very high-energy. We’ve played with great focus which has allowed us to train in a very competitive and productive environment. Q: This is one of the youngest teams in program history. How do you get these youngsters prepared to compete at the Div. I level with such a short time to prepare?
A: The biggest challenge for our upperclassmen has been to embrace the challenge of leading the younger players. With half the team being freshmen, our juniors and seniors have to lead, teach and hold the youngsters accountable much more so than in seasons’ past. Q: Who are your team captains?
A: Assistant coaches Kiha Sutta and Robin Grossman have worked with these freshmen since they were in high school to ensure they were set to come here and we’re excited for this group. This rookie class features quality players that come from strong club programs.
-- 8 --
A: Seniors Leah Bratt and Loren Catchpole are our team captains. They’ve been leading our team since January. They bring enthusiasm and commitment to the program in addition to excellent leadership.
2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • Season Outlook Q: How about the junior class?
A: It’s a small class, but a very passionate class. We lost a bunch of players from this group, whom decided to pursue other opportunities, such as missions and studying abroad. But the juniors we have are dedicated and striving to make us better. Hannah Schwartz is an incredible athlete and one of the strongest athletes to come through our program. She’s recently had surgery and we look for her to get back as soon as possible. Jackie Jacobs has been a strong contributor for our team. She hasn’t seen game action yet, but is an inspiring example to the team every day. Kyle Williamson has played solid defense for us since her freshman year. She’s entering her third year as a starter and we expect her to be a big presence for our defense. Q: What are your expectations of the senior class?
A: Our five seniors have been through it all, considering the adversity you have to overcome when attending an institution such as the Air Force Academy, both on and off the field. We need them to be leaders both on and off the field. We also expect them to have a significant impact on the field. Kelly Stambaugh ranks amongst our top three in nearly every goalkeeping category and has been a strong three-year starter for us. Our defense has the lowest goals allowed average in school history over the past three years with Kelly. Megan Dozier is a smart player that has the unique ability to be in the right place at the right time off the ball. Leah Bratt is the engine of our team and battles the entire 90 minutes for us. Kaleigh Moses is a technically strong player for us. She is willing to take risks offensively and we will need more of that. Loren Catchpole is the leader of our backfield. She’s come back strong from an ACL injury early in her career and posted an excellent junior season for us.
Q: Your sophomore class features five players. Are you expecting this group to step up after seeing a lot of time as freshmen?
A: This group has to play like they’re upperclassmen. We need them to show significant improvement from their freshman seasons. They’ve set a great example by competing every practice and have also been strong mentors to our freshmen.
Q: How does this freshman class stack up talent-wise to incoming classes in the past? Will they be seeing immediate action?
A: This is one of our stronger freshman classes. With freshmen making up 12 of our 25 players, we expect them to contribute immediately. Like I mentioned earlier, their strong club backgrounds will make their transition to this level a lot smoother. Q: How will the Mountain West as a conference be with the influx of several new women’s soccer programs?
A: Our conference was ranked seventh out of 32 conferences last year. With a couple strong programs joining our conference, we should at least be at the same level, if not rise more, in conference strength. Q: What will the Falcons have to do to have a successful season in 2013.
A: We have been fit, organized and disciplined over the last four years. Our defenses have posted the second, third and fourth best goals against averages in our Div. I era. We now just need to be effective on the offensive aspects of the game. In addition, we need to maintain our energy as we enter October and conference competition.

2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • MW Info/MW 2012 Recap On July 1, 1999, the Mountain West Conference began official operations with a membership composed of eight Division I-A institutions. The conference now features the Air Force Academy, Boise State University, Colorado State University, Fresno State University, University of Nevada, University of New Mexico, San Diego State University, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State and University of Wyoming. The University of Hawaii is a football-only member. The first eight member schools collectively decided to form a smaller conference and foster the traditional rivalries that were born in the ‘70s and ‘80s. BYU, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming were charter members of the Western Athletic Conference when it was founded in 1962, and Colorado State (1968), San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980), were long-stand-
ing members heading into the 1990s. UNLV joined the group in 1996 and TCU in 2005. In 2011, the Mountain West lost BYU and Utah but gained Boise State. Fresno State, Nevada and Hawai’i (football only) joined the conference in 2012-13, while TCU departed for the Big 12 Conference. San Jose State and Utah State join the conference in 2013-14. The MWC crowns champions in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track & field, and women’s volleyball. The top eight of 11 teams will be invited to the women’s soccer championship, Nov. 4-9, in Albuquerque, NM.

2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer • USAFA The United States Air Force Academy offers a four-year program of instruction and experience designed to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. Course of Study Cadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that provides the knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential to a career Air Force officer. The entire USAFA experience is integrated and mapped to achieve a set of desired outcomes in every graduate. The core academic curriculum includes courses in basic sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities. Cadets take additional elective courses to complete requirements for one of 32 major areas of study. About 50 percent of the cadets complete majors in science and engineering; the remainder graduate in the social sciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management, aeronautical engineering, foreign area studies, history, behavioral science, civil engineering, astronautical engineering, electrical engineering and engineering mechanics. Faculty Composition The majority of the Academy’s faculty members, more than 500 total, are Air Force officers. They are selected primarily from careerofficer volunteers who have established outstanding records of performance and dedication. Each has at least a master’s degree and more than 55 percent have doctorates or other terminal degrees in their field of study. About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring great depth of disciplinary and educational expertise and provide academic stability and continuity. Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning as an integral part of their officer development. The Air Force Academy has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for the most accessible and involved faculty. To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academy has several distinguished visiting professors and endowed professors who serve one or more years. Officers from other services, as well as officers from allied countries are also members of the faculty. Distinguished civilian and military lecturers also share their expertise with the cadets during the academic year.
Athletic Program The Academy’s athletic program is designed to improve physical fitness, teach athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To achieve its goals, the Academy offers some of the most extensive physical education, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets take at least three different physical education courses each year. Military Education and Training An air, space and cyberspace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins with basic cadet training and continues throughout the four years. Seniors are responsible for the organizational leadership of the cadet wing, while juniors and sophomores seek to develop team and interpersonal leadership and instructional skills. Cadets are projected into as many active leadership roles as possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force officers. Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -- are emphasized the first summer during basic cadet training. Freshmen then study the military role in United States society as well as the mission and organization of the Air Force. Sophomores receive instruction in communication skills and juniors study the combat and operational aspects of the Air Force. The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and parachuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets may fly light aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team. Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week training periods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet is required to complete two training periods each summer with leave during the other period. All new cadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their first summer. Combat survival training is a required three-week program during cadets’ second summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have options such as working with Airmen in an operational unit at an Air Force installation, airborne parachute training, soaring or basic free-fall parachute training. During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership training as supervisors or instructors in the summer programs listed above. Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the education program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and forensics are a few of the programs available.
History of The Academy In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military educators was appointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet the needs of the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Force requirements could not be met by expanding the other service academies and recommended an Air Force Academy be established without delay. In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed a commission to assist in selecting a site and on April 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air Force Academy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commission narrowed the choice to three locations. The summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott selected a site near Colorado Springs, Colo. Colorado contributed $1 million toward

purchase of the property. In July 1955, the first Academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while construction began. It was sufficiently completed for occupancy by the cadet wing in late August 1958. Initial construction cost was $142 million. Women entered the Academy on June 28, 1976, as members of the class of 1980.

He led the transition from the retirement of the legendary Fisher DeBerry after 23 years at the helm to hiring current head coach Troy Calhoun, a 1989 Academy graduate. Calhoun’s impact was immediate, leading the Falcons to a 9-4 overall mark and a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference in 2007. The Falcons qualified for their first bowl game in seven years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2007. The program has gone to a school-record six consecutive bowl games and averaged over 9,000 bowl tickets sold. 2013 Air Force Women’s Soccer •Air Force Athletics Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive as the Air Force Academy’s. The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical conditioning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teach leadership in a competitive environment and to build character. There are three subdivisions of the athletic program: intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and physical education. The intercollegiate program has 17 men’s and 10 women’s NCAA-sanctioned teams, facing some of the top competition in the nation. Men’s teams are football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. The Academy fields women’s teams in basketball, cross-country, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two non-NCAA programs; boxing and cheerleading. The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete in this conference against teams from Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawai’i (football only), Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State and Wyoming. All sports also compete against non-conference opponents, including many nationally ranked teams. The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have won the trophy 18 times, which is more than any other academy. The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in the country. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6 million building is five stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three football fields laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketball arena, ice hockey arena and multipurpose area. The three sections have a combined seating capacity of more than 9,000. Clune Arena seats 5,858. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity of 2,470, while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and field competitions. The $4.1-million renovation to the Cadet Track Stadium, the outdoor home of the Air Force track and field team, was completed in the fall of 2011 and is one of the premier track and field facilities in the nation. The Holaday Athletic Center, a $15.5 million completely donor funded indoor training facility, was completed in July 2011. The Cadet Fitness Center, a $9.5 million, Military Construction project, home of the Air Force Academy’s fencing practice facility and aerobics/weight lifting facility that contains a nearly 33-foot climbing wall, opened in May 2012.
