// ABOUT // I define myself as a young architect engaged to bringing about a medium of change within the society, and believe architecture is a medium for structural thinking, I am a strong believer in the theory that architecture school teaches you not only the technical skills, but design skills and solutions; it teaches you a way of thinking and perceiving, or other ways rather, that differentiates its students from the rest. I support the correlation and fusion between sustainable and parametric architecture, valuing the role of innovation and exploration of modern trends.

01 THE HORIZON The Horizon is a Transit Interchange Hub integrating the terminal and recreation activities of the public users, where the design and planning of the Brown-field site aims to create an Urban node, accentuating the unique identity of Pondicherry. The building is characterized by its tiered undulating roof, full height glazing with infused PV cells, wave-like ceiling and more which are a means to symbolize the sea waves as that similar to the waves from the Bay of Bengal. The concepts of net zero energy and contemporary architectural style with emphasis on structural elements were used.

Zoning // Approaches Context-based Zoning The 17.4 acre site is situated in the Eastern coast of India, which creates challenges such as resisting natural disasters like tsunamis, cyclones, and erosion, navigation of cruise liners. The site is oriented with respect to the analysis such as sun path, wind path, directions of cyclonic winds and tsunami waves. The abandoned seaport has abundance of vegetation around the boundary acting as noise buffer. The level differences between the land and sea have been considered while planning the appropriate spaces and functions within and around the site.

Axis // Circulation Spatial planning takes consideration of the existing parameters., hencce the site is provided with entries from north for vehicles, and from south for the public users only. The terminal is on the pier which encroaches the sea water.

Design Approaches The aim of creating a net zero energy building and site by use of renewable energy resources like sun, wind, tidal waves & rain water are used to provide energy to its maximum potential. Emphasis on baggage conveyor belt with framework, vehicular ramps to & from the terminal, roofing system, tapered columns used with modern materials.

Design Features Planning The spatial planning revolves around the functions and atriums, since it is a function-based design, where the building support systems are a part of the building which monitors the control of mechanical services. The design accommodates 2000 to 3000 passengers. Departure and arrival functions are separated by floors to avoid illicit activities, and to prevent passenger chaos. The passengers are connected to and from the cruise liner by aerobridges at two levels. The docking of current and future liners would be on the terminal, while the pier is used as an apron and baggage handling area during the seasons.

LONGITUDINAL SECTION

Form Idea Biomimetic forms were used for the design of the building skin and roofing, where inspiration was drawn from natural features related to the sea like waves, sea foam, corals etc. This is expressed through Parametric architecture, acting as a contrast to the regional architecture. The contemporary and modern style uses materials like ACP, DGU, membranes, concrete shells and more. It helps correspond to the wave - like form of roofing, thus giving a unique identity . This produces an image of Dynamism.

Net Zero Viability Energy components used in the design are mainly oriented towards the site development like solar trees, wind trees and wind turbine lamps used for converting solar and wind energy to electrical energy which can be used for street lighting, turbines and CETO technology used to convert tidal energy to electrical energy. The rain water is collected in recharge pits which also act as ponds within the terminal in the atriums, acting as a humidity modifier. In addition to this, a bank of mangrove trees are also used to curb effects of erosion and flooding.

02 AERONAUTICAL INSTITUTE The academic block situated in the north-most corner of the Campus assumes a tight, triangular corner site. The west and north edges embrace the challenges of the site’s imposing geometry by using the large setback area as a landscaped edge. With the corners of the triangular plan assuming special importance, the circular column adds emphasis and terminates the building at the north corner. The central bay hosuing the staircase divides the triangular floor plan into two parts; the classrooms, seminar halls towards the south and the staff rooms & toilet block towards the north.

03 HOUSE OF PERFORATIONS The spatial planning of the rooms and areas within the east facing residence was done in accordance with “Vastu” principles, where elements are added and subtracted with respect to the cardinal directions of the spaces within. The spaces were planned as a series of potential happenings, connected with an element of discovery. The geometry of the glazed corner opens up the common spaces to allow for maximum daylight during different hours of the day. Materials such as HPL, perforated metal screening, glass blocks, metal pergolas and more were used to accentuate and provide privacy to the subtractions and additions on the building.

04 RESIDENTIAL INTERIORS The open planning and airy apartment inspired the interior design, colour schemes and material palette to open-up the spaces within and create a lively atmosphere. A neutral colour scheme with an accent colour, or material was used throughout. The transition spaces were of contemporary and minimal style. These led to the bedrooms with vibrant themes in consideration to the likes of the family members. The aim of the whole design was to come up with a dessign that would satisfy the family, without creating any independent or standalone areas.

Familial. Contemporary. Minimalist.

24

INTERIOR PERSPECTIVE PLAN

Theme // Design Colour Palette To achieve a familial, cozy and modern design with the interiors, various themes were chosen, incorporating a similar colour and material palette. The neutral tone was maintained throughout the spaces by use of black, oak wood, silver or gold accents. Bold colours like blues, jade and red were used to accentuate the spaces. Design Eclectic naturalism, contemporary rustic, and artfulness were a few themes used. Use of profiled wood panels, floating shelves, sleek hardwares, blue sapphire granite united all common and private spaces within the flat. Provision of bold colour of the sofa, bright wallpapers, soft furnishing and lighting further accentuated the spaces within. White wall paints and tall plants were provided to open up the space and bring in furtgher natural light..

06 REDEVELOPMENT OF MARKET Located in the heart of the city of Mysore is one of the oldest and important markets of the city, the Lansdowne. Adaptive reuse architecture breathes new life into this historic structure by converting the existing dilapidated mixed use complex into something useful for the surrounding, like a public market, travellers retreat, community centers, or mixed-use creative venues. Additional features like the cusped archways, ornate colonnades, colour palette, tile and material work have been adapted from the immediate context, which is the famous Mysore Palace. This design intervention helps with the urban sprawl, creates a beacon for the community and lowers the construction costs by reusing the existing materials.

Adaptive. Indo-Sarcenic. Amalgam.

28

Concepts // Design Features Aim Markets bring people together since people love food, value contributing to the economy, and is fond of socialising. The main aim is the creation of an exciting architectural object that would engage more people by creating a dialog between the surrounding space, the market and other activity zones within the site, catering to both leisure and needs. Spatial planning for old and new shops from the Lansdowne and Devaraja markets revolved around the classification of spaces like open market spaces, hawker areas, market halls, covered and miscellaneous market and workshop areas.

Zoning The public space plays a crucial role in the atmosphere of the area as a whole, hence creating a pleasant environment would be the main consideration. Arrangement of shops in a gallery style, for ease in circulation of goods, customers, and passerby was one of the most important criterion. The perpendicular axes provides for good air-flow to all shops. The terraces open to temporary tensile membrane structures that bare similarities to the umbrellas used for the annual Mysore processions.

LONGITUDINAL SECTION - 01 // through market and cultural center

Architectural Style Indo-sarcenic architecture of the contextual buildings were taken into consideration for the development and maintenance of the existing and new facades. Dramatizing spaces using courtyards, colonnades, terraces, links, double-storey market spaces and more were used to accentuate the public axes and spaces within the market. Cusped arches and patterns were imitated in the new and proposed facade design to conserve the character of the heritage of the cultural precinct.

07 TREE OF KNOWLEDGE “The Image of the City” by Kevin Lynch was the inspiration for the concept of the design program. Being located in the heart of the city of Bengaluru, this visually striking and unique architecture of the proposed public library uses the concept of organic architecture, where the design features and materials are inspired by the immediate context, providing an importance of the image of the city through elements like path, edge, district, node and landmark. The informality and fluidity of the garden city has been used to develop the form, circulation, access and spatial imagery of the library. Due to the corner intersection of major roads, the building takes a curved and organic structure, while breaking the monotony of rectilinear buildings within its context.

Biomimetic. Vibrant. Imageability.

34

street view // from minsk sqaure

Design Features Concept Characteristics of garden city like pockets of greenary, regional vegetation, streets with tree groves, flower markets, suburbs and green belts were used to provide the project objectives in the culture of planning fluid informal spaces, hierarchy of green spaces, informality, adumbration by creating a sense of security and privacy, connecting the spaces. Design features such as voronoi facade, coloured glass walls, green walls, landscaped terraces, grand spiral staircase within the atrium as central focal point of attraction, canopy-like columns and furniture styles.

VERTICAL ZONING

Form Idea Bio-mimetic forms inspired by the ripples of water (The Lake City; The Garden city), topographic fetaure of great lakes, vast parks, gardens, avenue of trees and more were used as slabs of irregular shapes and sizes, landscaped mounds, story walks, terraced balconies, voronoi facade, materials to enhance daylight and more. Sleek lines and soft curves showcases a fluid appearance along with the utilization of shape and techniques. The informality of the space is represented through the fluidity within and outside the library.

Zoning The agglomeration of private, semiprivate and public functions makes the planning a unique design. All entries are from the south, which opens to relaxed landscaped spaces for kids and adults. The library terminates at the fifth floor and opens to the cultural center, food-stalls and view decks. Termination of cultural center at the top of the building provides views to various fringes of the city, along with curbing any hindrances by everyday users. Planning of children’s library and offices at the lower levels done due to ease in user accessibilty, loading and unloading and more.

08 VISUALIZATION PROJECTS Compilation of selected favorite visualizations for exteriors and interiors. These images show progression of architectural visualizations from academic to non-academic years. I started to learn arch-viz independently, while getting assistance and guidance from friends, seniors and mentors. Arch-viz is one of the best ways to translate ones ideas and communicate any design related thoughts and queries. Softwares such as Sketchup, V-Ray, Blender and Lumion were used for these visuals.

09 MISCELLANEOUS WORKS Compilation of selected graphical and artworks done over the years. I was one of those people who wanted to study architecture because I liked to sketch and travel. Though I knew architecture is more than just drawing, my interest in doodling, sketching, painting never faded. I personally think sketching is one of the ways to brainstorm and translate ideas to something viable. This has helped in translating concepts and ideas to tangile things. In addition to this, I also like making maquettes and think of it as way of visualization at different stages of design processs. This has helped me analyze the best forms, spatial or even material relationship.
