The commitment is more than just a pledge. It is seen as an enhancement to the existing Declaration of Religious Harmony, in that it lays out specific ways for Singaporeans to interact with each other. This includes eating together even if there are different religious dietary practices at the table, and attending weddings and funerals even if they are held in a place of worship that is not of one’s faith.

Masagos: Muslim Singaporeans have much to be proud of Muslims in Singapore are a community underpinned by character, competence and citizenry, Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Masagos Zulkifli said on Friday, 14 June. Speaking at an annual Hari Raya get-together, Mr Masagos described building a "community of success" - first mentioned at the Committee of Supply debates in March - including investments for the religious sector. Mr Masagos talked about how Muis will adopt strategies to ensure religious teachers can develop their skillsets to seek other careers in the future, professionalise the industry, and contribute toward raising competence in the larger community. Asatizah play a crucial role in developing a sense of citizenry, said Mr Masagos, who called on them to help Muslims deepen their sense of confidence and discernment so that they can go about their religious practice with confidence while contributing to mainstream society. To that end, he announced that Singapore will host a conference on the theme of being a community of success next year. Encouraging asatizah to work with the Office of the Mufti as well as other community leaders to develop a Singapore Muslim school of thought on Islam, Mr Masagos said: "Muis, as well as our religious scholars and asatizah, can contribute their wealth of experience, fatwa, and irsyad."

Marriage counselling for Muslim prisoners An amendment to AMLA law last year made it mandatory for all Muslim couples who are planning to divorce to undergo marriage counselling. Today, it has been extended to Muslims who are in prison under the Marriage Counselling Programme (MCP) according to Syariah Court. Counselling sessions are conducted face-to-face at the prison unless this is not viable - such as when a spouse has young children to care for and cannot be away from home for long - in which case they can be conducted through video-conferencing from satellite centres. There are six satellite centres, including Kampong Ubi Community Centre and Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association. If reconciliation is not possible, the MCP hopes to mediate an amicable divorce. Speaking at Kampong Ubi Community Centre on Friday, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs and Health Amrin Amin said: "We hope to save marriages where they can be saved... to provide an avenue for parties to resolve their differences and to ensure that couples don't divorce for the wrong reasons, such as misunderstanding and miscommunication." Currently, there are three inmates participating in the programme with their spouses.

RRG after it was formed more than a decade ago In an interview with Berita Harian 16 years after Religious Rehabilitation Group (RRG) was formed, Ustaz Haji Ali Haji Mohamed, Co-Chairman of RRG, mentioned that RRG was formed following the arrest of JI members at the end of 2001. Its main goal is to help rehabilitate religious detainees and combat extremist and radical ideologies. The RRG methodology was based on counselling programme for the detainees which focuses on three aspects. These are identifying the wrong religious interpretation to correct them, explaining why the interpretations are wrong, and instilling awareness on the virtuous values of religion such as compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, patience. Islam in Context The lecturer highlighted that the practice of Islam should not be separated from our context. This is because each context has its own set of challenges which demands the need to contextualize Islam to strengthen the social fabric of a community or country. Having said that, contextualization is not foreign to the Islamic tradition. The Quran was revealed gradually to the Prophet over the course of 23 years so as to cater to the context and development of the Muslim society then. In addition, there were many instances where the Prophet and his companions contextualize religious edicts to celebrate the well-being of the community. Therefore, in principle, Islam should be practiced in accordance with the context of the people and the differences does not indicate the relativity of truth, however, it is an indication of the plurality and richness of the Islamic tradition.

Diversity is part of God’s plan As mentioned in the Quran, diversity is a natural phenomenon that exists in all aspects of life. Thus it is normal for mankind to hold on to different belief systems and how they live their lives. The lecturer pointed out that diversity is a blessing for mankind as it provides us with the opportunity to learn from each other. This requires interacting and living with those who are different from us even in belief system.Â

From a sociological perspective, this social phenomenon results in the advancement of mankind. In addition, history has acquainted us with many examples of the Prophet PBUH maintaining good ties with people of other faiths. This shows that accepting Islam as the religion of God should not engender a ‘holier than thou’ attitude towards others. As a matter of fact, it is the responsibility of every Muslim to be compassionate and merciful towards all human beings. In short, being superior in faith should not make you a supremacist as the concept of adab in the Islamic tradition informs Muslims to engage with the religious other respectfully. This is in line with the principle of rahmatan lil alamin.

Oleh Ustaz Mohammad Yusri Yubhi Md Yusoff

Pengenalan

In collaboration with

Menurut Lord Robbins, dalam bukunya An Essay on the Nature and Significance of Economic Science, di mana beliau telah mengupas perbahasan ekonomi menurut pandangan para sarjana pada masa itu, sebelum memberikan definisi mengenai ekonomi berdasarkan kacamatanya, iaitu satu bidang ilmu sosial yang menerangkan gelagat manusia dalam membuat keputusan penggunaan daripada sumber-sumber yang terhad, untuk mencapai tahap kepuasan yang maksimum.
