Masyarakat Islam dilarang meminum minuman alkohol.

New Islamic discourse for current context There have been many discussions recently on building a local Islamic thought discourse, as mentioned by some of our Malay Muslim community leaders. Many stressed the need for the Malay/Muslim community to develop a local Islamic thought that is based on the understanding and practice of religion in Singapore's plural society. Writer, Ustaz Fauzan Arif Roslee shared on Berita Mediacorp that the more appropriate question to ask in assessing a discourse is: how can the discourse empower the community and if the discourse can be sustained. Writer looked at the various discourses of Singaporean Islamic thought that addressed the community’s need and shaped the community’s understanding over the last 50 years. He added that the plan to set up a Singapore Islamic College (SIC) gives us an opportunity to present the discourses that will shape the Singaporean society. He opined that SIC has the opportunity to be an autonomous institution that empowers academic freedom, welcomes a wide range of views, and displays local voices (i.e. academicians, religious leaders, researchers, and local activists) in advancing the discourse of Singapore's Islamic thought. This will not only guarantee the sustainability of the discourse, but also to produce a totally unique discourse of Islamic thought and contribute to global Islamic discourse.

Relationship between Muslims & non-Muslims Ustaz Haniff challenged a long-standing assumption that as Muslims we are taught to decline the greeting (salam) of a non-Muslim. This erroneous idea is based on the assumption that by virtue of being a kafir he/she is less worthy of respect until proven otherwise. Ustaz referred to an incident to disprove this assumption where Umar r.a was reprimanded by Ali r.a for his selective treatment when mediating a case between Ali r.a and a Jew. This signifies the importance of ‘adl even towards those who are different from you in belief. Therefore, the relationship between Muslims and nonMuslims should be based on love, justice and equity. Ustaz further highlighted that the understanding of terms such as Musyrikin and Kafir should be based on the maxim (Al-‘Am Yurad Bihi Al-Khas), a word that is general but carries a specific meaning. It usually refers to an incident that happened in a particular socio-political landscape and should not be generalized. Ustaz further highlighted that the main objective of dakwah is not to convert everyone to Islam as hidayah comes from Allah. Therefore, we have to learn and coexist with non-Muslims.

Understanding the Concept of Wala’ and Bara’ Ustaz Haniff pointed out that the concept of Wala’ and Bara’ has affected relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims today. To put it simply, Wala’ entails unwavering loyalty and love to Allah, the Prophet and Muslims only. Whereas, Bara’ demands disassociation from any elements of kufr which includes displaying a negative attitude towards non-Muslims. Furthermore, advocates of this concept argue that it is a fundamental component of religion and to disagree with its meanings will nullify one’s faith. This rationale is problematic particularly in a multireligious country like Singapore. According to Ustaz, the accurate understanding of Bara’ can only be exercised towards nonMuslims who are hostile towards Islam and Muslims (Kafir Harbi).

Having said that, it is generally accepted that non-Muslims in Singapore are not enemies of Islam. For that reason, it is encouraged to interact and deal with them in a respectful manner that reflects the noble values of Islam which call for human flourishing and well-being.

Siapakah Sebenarnya yang Bergelar Ulama?: Satu Perspektif Wasati https://blog.pergas.org.sg/wasat/
Oleh Ustaz Mustazah Bahari
Walaupun ulama itu, di sisi bahasa Arab, bermaksud para ilmuan, penggunaannya di kalangan masyarakat Melayu di sini mempunyai konotasi yang sedikit berbeza. Ulama dalam penggunaan masyarakat Muslim di sini seringkali dikaitkan dengan para ilmuan yang mahir dan pakar dalam ilmu-ilmu yang bersangkutan dengan agama. Di dalam bidang ilmu yang lain, ahli atau pakarnya diberi gelaran yang berbagai seperti cendekiawan, ilmuwan, pemikir, karyawan dan sebagainya. Artikel ini ingin menghuraikan maksud dan pengertian ulama selaku golongan yang mahir dalam keagamaan. Sebab yang mendorong penulisan ini ialah kewujudan tanggapan-tanggapan yang bermasalah sekitar makna dan kedudukan golongan ini berdasarkan pengalaman penulis sendiri berinteraksi dengan pelbagai golongan dalam masyakarat ketika mengendalikan kursus atau kelas agama. Antara tanggapan-tanggapan bermasalah ini ialah pemikiran di kalangan pelajar agama bahawa;
