GUEST WRITER

Mufti Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir calls for the community to share the blessings this Ramadan. In his tazkirah, he shares what it means to do so as we are taught to love for others what you love for yourself. Alhamdulillah, this year we will have the opportunity to enliven the spirit of Ramadan not just in our homes, but in our mosques as well. We can perform congregational terawih prayers at the mosques, which was fondly missed by the community. The community showed great resilience as we faced bigger obstacles last year, continuing our religious worship at home with our families and loved ones. So, let those lessons guide us in observing the blessed month meaningfully with gratitude, compassion and care towards everyone around us.

Explanation by the Fatwa Committee on the Friday Prayer Fatwa before Zawal during the COVID-19 pandemic period Last year, on 16 June 2020, after intense deliberation, the Singapore Fatwa Committee decided that Friday prayers could be conducted before zawal, if necessary, in the ongoing pandemic, in order to maximise the opportunity for the most number of people to perform their Friday prayers in the mosque. Recently, there has been some confusion and anxiety regarding this fatwa. Although the published fatwa had already laid out the religious basis behind the decision, the Fatwa Committee felt it was important to emphasise further to the community the process and principles of fatwa in dealing with new and complex issues. The new problems that arise in this current pandemic require the ijtihad (reasoning) of ulama and Ulul-Amri so that the community can continue to practise and observe our religious teachings safely and responsibly. For this purpose, the Fatwa Committee considered every problem that arises based on the following principles: (a) Taking into account the reality of life; (b) Taking into account the Islamic scholarly tradition; and (c) Taking into account the aspect of taysir (facilitation) We are still in a very challenging situation. As a result, there are still restrictions on congregational worship. The Fatwa Committee considered several solutions to provide more opportunities for prayer to the community in a safe and responsible manner.

In deliberating this issue, the Fatwa Committee took into account religious texts as a guide. At the same time the committee acknowledges that the past scholars used to discuss the issue of Friday prayer time in a normal situation, and not during a pandemic. The Fatwa Committee also took into account the constraints faced by workers who have work timing constraints, as well as the operational constraints of the mosques, who have to ensure disinfection and safety procedures are in place to keep the mosques safe as large numbers of congregants utilise the mosque during this pandemic. The need in Singapore in today’s situation is very clear, as mentioned in the fatwa text, “Although this is something that has never been done in Singapore, and not a view within the mazhab of al-Shafi’i, it is an initiative and part of our efforts to enable more people to perform their Friday prayers due to the challenging situation facing Singaporean Muslims at the moment.” This is the essence of fatwa - to provide practical solutions to religious life given the evolving challenges of modern life. The Fatwa Committee advises the Muslim community of Singapore to be understanding and open-minded in accepting differences of opinions, and at the same time, appreciate the wide scope of the Shari’ah. Alhamdulillah, such is the vastness of the Shari’ah, that more Muslims in Singapore are able to perform Friday prayers even in a pandemic. Last year was an unprecedented year when the mosques were closed and we all had to go through Ramadan amidst the circuit breaker. Alhamdulillah, this year, our mosques are able to resume more worship services during Ramadan. One of the acts of worship that we all look forward to is the Terawih prayer. The Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said: ‫ﻣﻦ ﻗَﺎم رﻣﻀﺎنَ اﻳﻤﺎﻧًﺎ واﺣﺘﺴﺎﺑﺎ ﻏُﻔﺮ ﻟَﻪ ﻣﺎ ﺗَﻘَﺪﱠم ﻣﻦ ذَﻧْﺒِﻪ‬ “Whoever prays during the night of Ramadan with īmān (faith) and in hopes of rewards (from Allah), his past sins will be forgiven for him.” (Sahih al-Bukhārī & Muslim) As Singapore is still in phase 3 of re-opening, we still need to adhere to the current safety management measures. In view of the limited spaces available at mosques, online booking needs to be done in order to secure a prayer slot at the mosque. If you wish to perform your prayers at the mosque, do book a slot through https://ourmosques.commonspaces.sg or the online booking platform on the Muslim.SG app. Here are the things you need to know about the Terawih booking for 2021: When can I book Terawih slots? There are 3 different booking windows for the entire month of Ramadan. Each window is for a set of 10 Ramadan nights. 12 April 2021 to 21 April 2021 (Registration commences on 10 April 2021, 9pm) 22 April to 2021 to 1 May 2021 (Registration commences on 20 April 2021, 10am) 2 May 2021 to 11 May 2021 (Registration commences on 30 April 2021, 10am) Each time a booking window is opened for that particular set of 10 nights, you can only book 1 Terawih slot for the first 2 days. After these 2 days are over, booking will be made available again for balance slots from that set of 10 nights. Continue Reading

Bacaan Lanjut
