Irsyad On Conducting Funeral Prayers During circuit breaker period

As the management of Muslim deceased is a collective religious obligation (fardhu kifayah), funeral prayer should still be performed but with adjustments in light of the need to contain the spread of COVID-19. In principle, the number of people managing the funeral rites must be kept to the minimum at all times. Accordingly, the management of Muslim deceased as part of the Islamic funeral rites, including the washing, enshrouding, prayer and burial, should only be carried out by: Officials from funeral company appointed by the family of the deceased Immediate family members not exceeding 10 individuals. In addition to the above, funeral prayers can only be conducted in homes, with the following added measures: 1. the number of people attending the prayers do not exceed 10 (excluding the funeral companies’ officials) 2. there is a physical distance of at least one meter all around between them. Where the deceased has no immediate family members, or is a resident in shelters or homes, the funeral company should contact the Pusara Aman Mosque, for the funeral prayer to be performed there.

If the family wishes to read the tahlil after the funeral, ensure that those attending the tahlil are only members of the same household. Families may also wish to invite an imam/ustaz to recite the tahlil through video conference only. Under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures), every individual must stay at home and may leave their place of residence only for essential needs or purposes during the stipulated period. As such, apart for burials, visits to the cemetery are not allowed under the Regulations. Instead family members should increase their supplications for the deceased from home. These measures are necessary precautions to ensure the safety and health of the public, and to prevent the continuing spread of the disease. We pray that Allah S.W.T. blesses the soul of those deceased in these challenging times and places themin the highest ranks of His servants.

Mufti Dr Nazirudin shares tips on welcoming Ramadan during this COVID-19 season As the month of Ramadan is just around the corner, let us ponder upon a special message from our beloved Mufti, Ustaz Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir. He shares some tips and suggestions on how we can welcome this blessed month amidst our current challenge of having to stay indoors. Some of the key points mentioned in this video are: 1. Responsibility (Amanah) is one of the most important virtues of Islam and it is a testament to our faith (Iman) in Allah S.W.T. Hence, each one of us must play our part and never compromise on safe distancing and other precautionary measures advised by the authorities. 2. Each of us will be facing unique challenges in having to stay at home for at least a month, but we must bounce back stronger as an individual, a family and a community. For those who will be staying at home with their families, this will be َ ‫ﺧ ْﻴﺮُ ُﻛ ْﻢ‬ َ a perfect opportunity for us to heed the advice of Rasulullah S.A.W. (‫ﺧ ْﻴﺮُ ُﻛ ْﻢ‬ َ ‫ )ﻷَﻫْ ﻠِﻪِ َوأَﻧَﺎ‬which means: "The best of you are those who are best to ‫ﺧ ْﻴﺮُ ُﻛ ْﻢ ﻷَﻫْ ﻠِﻲ‬ their families, and I am the best of you to my family." [Tirmidhi]

3. Whatever our circumstances, Ramadan will still knock on our doors and we must accept this blessed guest from Allah S.W.T into our homes, because it comes with His mercy, forgiveness and blessings. We should continue to get close to Allah s.w.t. and spread kindness in alternative ways including listening to online lessons by Asatizah, giving charity to those in need (individuals and institutions) and keeping one another in our prayers to remain spiritually connected.

All CPE programmes brought to halt As part of the ARS Office’s efforts in combating the spread of COVID-19 and ensuring the safety of our Asatizah, all Continuous Professional Education (CPE) programmes in April and May 2020 have been postponed to a later date. The ARS Office is committed to providing training for our Asatizah during this pandemic. Asatizah will be updated soon on how they can join the CPE programmes via SMS, the ARS website, and the next edition of the ARS Newsletter.

Singapore Mufti Dr Nazirudin Nasir sends a heartfelt letter to Bishop Terry on Holy Week Muslims and Christians mark these holy commemorations this year in the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. Places of worship from mosques and temples to churches remain closed. With the circuit breaker measures currently put in place, we are not able to commemorate these spiritual observations beyond the physical space of our homes. However, faith remains strong as faith communities make adjustments to their religious lives in facing COVID-19. The Muslim and the Christian communities have rallied behind one another, giving support and uplifting each other showcasing the true spirit of religious harmony and unity as Singaporeans. The Mufti of Singapore, Dr Nazirudin Nasir penned a heartfelt letter to Bishop Terry Kee, the President of National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS), expressing the best wishes from the Muslim community to the Christian community on the special occasion of the Holy Week, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. 7 tips to prepare for Ramadan Ustazah Noorsakinah Masrawi

Ramadan is always a high-time for most Muslims to strive in becoming a better self. On top of the obligatory 5 daily prayers, Ramadan is when most of us strive to perform supplementary Ibadah such as Tarawih prayers, feed others and give charity and other good deeds that gain Allah’s pleasure. Inevitably, it is also a month that challenges us spiritually, mentally and physically. Continue Reading

Towards fair reward for Asatizah By

Muhammad Haniff Hassan, Dr.

This article seeks to argue for fair treatment for teachers of Islamic religious knowledge (asatizah) in the form of fair remuneration for their services in religious education and various initiatives aimed at championing goodness (da`wah) either through individual effort or institutions. To date, there is a prevalent perception within the Muslim community in Singapore that asatizah should perform their religious duties towards the community with utmost sincerity i.e. to seek solely Allah’s pleasure as reward and thus by default, should not seek worldly rewards, in return. Therefore, the form of reward should be left to Allah as He is The Best Provider (AlRazzaq). Ultimately, asatizah are expected to accept these ordained rewards with contentment (rida) and gratitude (shukr). Consequently, the above perception shapes a negative attitude towards asatizah who ask for a fee or salary which equals the market value and conventional practice. It is regarded as seeking worldly pleasures from noble religious duties and raises questions about the asatizah’s integrity and credibility.
