Mufti Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir in his lecture called for the community to live a life guided by the noble principles and values taught by our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). With the pandemic still ongoing, Dr Nazirudin urged us to remain united in harmony, and to strengthen trust and confidence as a society of various races and faiths. If these values are lacking or compromised, it presents a weakness in our society that can be easily exploited by forces that may divide us.

A healthy interaction amongst communities, built on the understanding and self-respect as well as citizenry, is important for any nation, especially a multicultural nation like Singapore. He added that we must not focus only on our own affairs but also to protect and respect the community that we live in, and most importantly stay united.

"As a society we can together erase the flames of anger with peace and purity of heart, a society filled with compassion and mercy towards all individuals." Mufti also emphasised communities to have a healthy interaction and mutual understanding built on trust and mutual respect. These reminders are especially relevant to us during these trying times when our faith is tested. According to Mufti, life of the Prophet s.a.w. is the gold standard by which we should live our lives, full of compassion, mercy, love and wisdom. Dr Nazirudin concluded his sharing that to achieve this requires vision, planning, patience, perseverance and most importantly, unity.

You may be aware of a news article published on 9 November 2020 entitled “Selfstyled prophet said to have five spiritual wives. The case was first reported to Muis by members of the public in 2018. The individual mentioned in the article is neither a qualified nor registered religious teacher under the Asatizah Registration Scheme (ARS). Muis takes public feedback on such matters seriously. The Fatwa Committee had interviewed the individual as the nature of his activities listed in the complaints appeared to be religious. The individual had denied any wrongdoing then and only admitted to offering spiritual healing. The Fatwa Committee administered a formal advisory to him to cease such activities immediately as he was not qualified to do so. The recent news article has raised new and alarming claims about his activities. While Muis is at the moment unable to independently verify if they indeed took place, practices such as having "spiritual wives", gambling to help others, and describing oneself as a prophet are clearly deviant and a distortion of the Islamic faith. It is also an offence to conduct a religious school without being registered with Muis. Muis will work with the relevant authorities to investigate this further and take the appropriate actions. We would also like to call on members of the public with relevant information to come forward to assist in investigations in this matter. We would like to remind the community to protect ourselves and our families by seeking religious instruction only from those who are qualified and registered to do so. If there are individuals making dubious claims or propagating doubtful teachings, please verify with Muis or the Asatizah Recognition Scheme Office via info@muis.gov.sg

Claims to prophethood are not exactly new to history; during Prophet Muhammad’s lifetime, Musaylamah alKazzab, an Arab man, falsely claimed that he too was a prophet of Allah. Since then, many others across various times and places have also made false claims to prophethood. Perhaps the most infamous of these claims would be that of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the founder of the Qadiani sect; his teachings caught on in the Archipelago and eventually reached Singapore during the 1940s. The book Noktah Hitam: Ajaran Sesat di Singapura, copublished by Muis and PERDAUS, sheds some light on the reasons for the emergence of deviant teachings, and why an individual might falsely claim prophethood for themselves. VARIOUS REASONS Some of the reasons include the desire to attain a high level of religious knowledge and the wish to worship differently from other believers. Further, psychological and mental pressures with having to create and maintain a following, coupled with a strong belief in mystical forces, might drive one to attribute powers of prophethood to themselves.

PAGE 10

However, the most salient factor in all of these false teachings is the desire for worldly status and a high social standing in the community. There are also others who incorporate some form of sexual perversion in their false teachings by insisting that one’s marriage is not legal until they surrender their wives to these self-professed “gurus” to be “sanctified” through a spiritual marriage (nikah batin) with such gurus. All of these false assertions can be traced back to one primal cause: ignorance. Ignorance about the sources of Islamic knowledge, ignorance about the characteristics of the learned until one is unable to differentiate between an authentic scholar and a false prophet, and ignorance about the various branches of Islamic knowledge, like Ulum al-Qur’an, Ulum al-hadith and Usul Fiqh.

So why is it the case that a number of highly educated individuals have been easily deceived by them?

EASY DECEPTION Many people have fallen prey to these false teachings, regardless of their social status or education. So why is it the case that a number of highly educated individuals have been easily deceived by them?

Some would say that these individuals have been placed in some sort of a spell or are under the influence of dark magic; others would say that the leader has a certain mesmerising effect and charm which disarms and ensnares those who listen into following him. However, according to the author of The Sociopath Next Door, Dr Martha Stout, all human beings have a certain weakness in assessing individuals that they deem as their intellectual or social equals. Further, human beings are also biased in their assessment of those with whom they take a large amount of interest in – the flipside, perhaps, of having good intentions towards a stranger. OTHER FACTORS Shahida Arabi, the author of Power: Surviving and Thriving after Narcissistic Abuse also gives several other factors that explain why highly educated individuals might fall prey to conniving actors: OCT

Past trauma especially during childhood, including frequent abuse from family members until the victim loses all sense of trust and security towards them, but, at the same time, feels some love and compassion for their abusers. The victim would eventually readily accept such abuse as part of ‘normal’ everyday living. This can also happen to young children who have been groomed to accept such abuse as a normal reality of life The perpetrator who manipulates and distorts the victim’s feelings and emotions, making them feel safe and secure in the face of danger and harm An experienced perpetrator; one who is an expert in knowing who to abuse, and their weaknesses, using a highly refined strategy to ensure that all who come across their manipulation will be successfully hoodwinked SEEK ADVICE The Michigan State University psychologist, Professor David Z. Hambrick, argues that intelligent people are not always rational in their life choices; the opposite also holds true. He also argues that it would be impossible for all human beings to be rational. Professor Hambrick’s reasoning makes it clear why some people fall prey to false teachers, regardless of their position in the social hierarchy, while others do not. Thus, it would be wise for one to seek advice from trusted family and friends before making a decision to follow a certain teaching or join a particular group. As many of these conmen continue to manipulate and thrive, one needs to be cautious and not simply regard others positively in such a situation of emotional and mental abuse. The individual involved in such a case must be frank with themselves and approach the issue, as well as the criticisms given to him or her, with a rational mind and an open heart. Where religious learning is involved, on the other hand, one is advised to seek Islamic knowledge from local asatizah accredited under the ARS.

GIVE SOME BREATHING SPACE This is important because the accredited asatizah would guide, teach and lead the community to be critical and rational in approaching deviant and extremist teachings. By leaving such issues to the hands of the experts, such teachings might be prevented from further spreading in the community. As for those who have been following the recent spread of deviant teachings, they are advised to indulge from To read the original article by Berita Mediacorp in Malay , click on the image below. speculating, gossiping or even slandering those who have been involved. Islam calls for its followers to give those who might have slipped and erred some breathing space, so that they may return to the right path. Muslims have been highly encouraged to show moral support and help to those who are currently facing such trials in their lives. Engage such individuals in friendly discussion and dialogues to help them in their thinking process, to the end that they might be able to separate the wrong from the right. However, if one is unable to do so, then at least make a du’a for them to be shown the right way.

Issues and events that provoked Muslim emotions are not new. The Danish caricature and the Charlie Hebdo cartoons are among the materials that Muslims found to be offensive and regard as an insult to our venerated figure - Prophet Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬. It is unlikely these incidents will not occur again. While many of us continue to work towards promoting peaceful co-existence and mutual respect, there are those who continue to promote hate and stir emotions. Responses towards the caricature incident saw Muslims expressing themselves in various ways, from violence like rioting, arson, and death threats to non-violence like petitions and economic boycotts. Given the circumstances, a few questions may be asked. How should Muslims all over the world respond to such provocations? What are the guiding rules that can be discerned from Islamic teachings that could help Muslims respond to future provocations? How do we ensure that the commendable position taken by Singaporean Muslims is sustained in the future or continue to be founded on a firm foundation? Here are some considerations: 1. Engage only in peaceful or non-violent response 2. Uphold the rule of law 3. Do not generalise 4. Proportionality The above four options are not in any order of priority. Each should be chosen based on the context and other considerations. But the point is that Muslims should not see their response in just one particular way but to have a strategic view by considering various options or a combination of these options which would provide greater benefit to them.
