ARCHITECTURE AND SCARCITY a foreword “Scarcity is more than just actual lack of material, space or energy. Yes, there is a diminishing resource base, but this is part of a much more complex set of relationships in which scarcity is revealed as socially, economically, and politically constructed.” 1 Scarcity as a problematic term that bridges economic and ecological domains challenges the contemporary discourse in architecture and interior. In order to understand the nature of these challenges, we need to comprehend the underlying forces at work, not just to deal with surface effects. In this way, we need to extend the intelligence and creativity to operate and examine the underlying forces under conditions of scarcity. Understanding the inherent dynamics of an interlinked system, redefining and generating the inextricable link between the present ecological plight and the structure of the global economy are being promoted. Consequently, living under the conditions of scarcity demands sensitivity and responsiveness to heighten our sense of the rhythm of global flows and recognition of ecological thinking that look at interrelationships of each ‘value structure’. Since we can not remove the ‘value structure’ from the scarcity this studio emphasizes on the system and operation on which the ‘value structure’ are being articulated.
