Antoine Bouvard Snr. (1870 - 1955)

Antoine Bouvard Senior - also going by the alias Marc Aldine, trained as an architect. He studied art and architecture under Constant-Dufeus, at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the city in which he was born. Known as one of the most prolific painters of the Venetian genre from his period, Bouvard’s works are broad and confidently painted, capturing all the atmosphere and charm of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. His paintings clearly show the influence of fellow French artist Felix Ziem, reflecting his love of Venice in the delicacy and fluidity of his use of colour.

Bouvard frequented Venice throughout the 1920s and 30s , falling in love with the city’s innate beauty. He captured in his paintings the warmth and delicacy of the Venetian light that he found in the floating city.

Bouvard’s landscapes were deeply admired during his lifetime and continue today to command considerable attention.

Sir Kyffin Williams (1918 - 2006)

Welshman Sir Kyffin Williams was born in Llangefeni in Anglesey, but spent a great deal of time in Shropshire being educated at both Moreton Hall and Shrewsbury School. It was at the latter Williams contracted Polio, which led him to develop episepsy. Due to this he failed a British Army medical exam and the doctor suggested he pursue his interest in art instead.

Between 1941 and 1944 Williams attended the Slade School of Fine Art in London and went on to teach part-time before returning to Anglesey in 1973, solidifying his reputation as a painter of the Welsh people and their landscape. In 1982 he was awarded an OBE for his service to the arts Williams emersed himself in the Welsh community he lived in and spent most of his time outdoors painting. He played a huge role in Welsh contemporary art and has been viewed by many to be the first artist to truly connect with the Welsh people. However, today his reputation has extended far beyond wales.

Antonietta Brandeis (1848 - 1926)

Antonietta Brandeis was a Czech-born Italian landscape, genre and portrait painter. After the death of her father, Brandeis’ mother married a Venetian man and their family moved to Venice soon after.

It is in Venice at the Academy of Fine Arts that Brandeis perfected her skills as a meticulous landscape and cityscape painter with intricate details. In 1870, while still a student at the Academy, she participated in her first exhibition with her oil painting ‘Cascina della Madonna di Monte Varese’. From then on Brandeis painted and exhibited numerous works, primarily scenes of Venice, although she also traveled and painted Verona, Bologna, Florence and Rome.

Brandeis was a prolific painter and often replicated her most popular subjects with only slight variations. The 1880’s became an intense period of activity for her, painting many landscapes en plein air and religious altarpieces. After marrying in 1897 Brandeis’ exhibiting became more sporadic and she produced fewer works than before. After her husband passed away in 1909, Brandeis resided primarily in their residence in Florence and continued to paint in her studio there until her death on March 20th 1926.
