Pianist Shahin Novrasli is most probably the greatest living exponent of the distinctive mugham jazz style. Daniel Kramer, the world-renowned Russian pianist, describes Novrasli as “a brilliant musician who dazzlingly expresses his own approach”, while Turkish pianist Fazil Say rates him as “one of the best currently performing pianists in the world”. The listener is alternately beguiled by a seductive curl of exotic melody, teased by the caprices of Eastern rhythm and jolted by a bracing oriental harmony before being swept by some American jazz quick-fire salvo. Like so much from his homeland, Novrasli’s art is an exhilarating fusion of cultures.

Kino! Kino! Pushkin House

On November 28 and December 8, 2009 screenings of films “Burnt by the Sun” and “Urga — Territory of Love”, based on the scripts of the renowned writer and screenwriter Rustam Ibragimbekov, took place at Pushkin House, which is considered to be the main center of Russian culture in London. A very serious and realistic scene shown in the “Burnt by the Sun”, a script for which was a result of co-work of Rustam Ibragimbekov and Nikita Mikhalkov, has brought its authors an international acclaim. This movie is deservedly considered one of the best films of the 90s and was awarded with an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film nomination of the Academy Awards Ceremony of 1994, as well as with the Grand Jury Prize of the 47th Cannes Film Festival. Three years before the release of the “Burnt by the Sun”, another film based on the script of Rustam Ibragimbekov – “Urga — Territory of Love” – was given an honorary Golden Lion award at the 1991 Venice Film Festival. In 1993 the film received the main prize of the Felix Awards ceremony held in Berlin and was also nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category. buta.ru | butalab.com | butakitchen.az | butafestival.com

Series of events in Pushkin House

On 1 December 2009 a Poetry Evening of Nigar HasanZadeh, where she presented her incredibly ardent and soulcapturing lyrics, was held in Pushkin House. Named by the British Library one of the leading foreign poets based in London, Nigar once again impressed the audience with her heartfelt poetry, filled with enchanting oriental images and rhythms. On December 7 2009 a concert of a young talented pianist Ayan Salakhova took place at Pushkin House. Despite her young age, Ayan, brought up in the family of renowned Azerbaijani artists, is already a winner of numerous awards, including the Anton Rubinstein Gold Medal award. Her masterful performance of Azerbaijani classical music at the concert in Pushkin House brought true joy to the hearts of the listeners and was greeted by a loud round of applause. A heart can not be deceived: indeed, Ayan Salakhova managed to feel and convey all the beauty of the wonderful music that she performed.

Oil & Jazz concert within the First Azerbaijani investment summit Auditorium hall, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)

Oil flows through the veins of Azerbaijan; jazz is its modern musical heartbeat. This unique audio-visual presentation combines the two. Participants: Sabina Rakcheyeva (violin) and her band — musician, diplomat, cultural fusionist, spokeswoman and Azerbaijan’s first Juilliard School alumni Isfar Sarabski (piano) — Montreaux prize-winning pianist Malcolm Creese (double-bass) Lec Cirkel (drums) The Oil & Jazz project is a unique audio-visual experiment, which provides an exciting new exploration of contemporary Azerbaijan. The concept is like a silent movie in reverse — instead of musicians improvising an accompaniment to a film, a team of “visual DJs” use a computerized oil image library to produce a visual interpretation of a live jazz performance. Oil & Jazz offers both a tailor-maid starting point for a cultural journey around the country, where the evaluation of a Caspian counterpoint merging Eastern musical traditions with Western jazz has seen a whole new style emerge from the cellar bars of Baku – and a drawing together of many of the themes of the festival – as with many aspects of this ever – surprising nation, it pays to expect the unexpected. buta.ru | butalab.com | butakitchen.az | butafestival.com

Black January discussion King’s College London

On January 20, 1990 anti-Soviet demonstrators in Azerbaijan gathered in the capital to call for independence from the Soviet Union and freedom for Azerbaijan. The response was ruthless. Tanks rolled into, troops fired into the unarmed crowd – and the death toll topped 200 over three days of violence. These tragic events, regarded as the birth of the Azerbaijani nation, are marked every year with a day of mourning. Leading Russian director Andrey Konchalovsky included the Black January massacre in his five-part cycle of documentaries chronicling the emergence of modern-day Azerbaijan from the outbreak of war in Nagorno-Karabakh to the presidency of Heydar Aliyev.

Mugham’s cultural importance is literally out of this world. In 2003 it was recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In the city of Shusha, a historic capital of Azerbaijan, it was even said, that babies cried in mugham verses while leading performers became the pop idols of their age. The technically challenging and emotionally intense music typically sets lyrics hymning the beauties of the countryside or bewailing unhappy love affairs.

Unseen Salakhov exhibition Sotheby’s

Off the coast of Azerbaijan’s Absheron peninsular, not far from Baku, the weird city-on-stilts, Oily Rocks, became a symbol for the oil industry and the birthplace of off-shore drilling. And it was here, when man and nature meet head on, that a young Tair Salakhov found inspiration for his art – and threw down a personal challenge to the Soviet system. Yet between the power of the sea and the rugged laborers working on the oil wells, the young artist found a voice not only for himself, but for a creative generation eager to push beyond the boundaries of state-approved ‘socialist-realism’ commissioned by Stalin to paint a gleaming portrait of people’s utopia, where no questions could be asked. This is how Tair Salakhov became one of the founders of the subsequent “severe style”, which peeled away the gloss of earlier Soviet art. His breakthrough work, 1957’s “The Shift is Over”, was no abstract crowd of happy masses leaving the factory, but showed real people, friends and colleagues, reflecting their exhaustion and relief at the end of another grueling working day. buta.ru | butalab.com | butakitchen.az | butafestival.com

Ave Maria concert St Martin-in-the-Fields

“Ave Maria” is one of the best-loved texts of the Christian tradition, where Jesus Christ is considered to be God the Son incarnated, who rose from the dead after being crucified. Yet its resonance is just as potent in the Islamic world, where Maryam is revered as the mother of Isa, a messenger of God. This concert contrasts different interpretations of the theme from all corners of the world. From Azerbaijan, Baku Music Academy Director Farhad Badalbeyli’s “Ave Maria” is performed by sopranos Maria Kuleshova (Russia) and Burcin Savigne (Turkey) and pianist Murad Huseyn accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Italian composer Astor Piazzolla’s popular modern version of the text also features along with the famous settings by J.S. Bach and Franz Schubert. The evening was rounded off by music from Europe’s Age of Enlightenment, with the RPO, conducted by Timothy Henty (Great Britain) and violinist Schlomo Mintz.

Gara Garayev concert Cadogan Hall

Gara Garayev (1918-1982) is arguable Azerbaijan’s greatest composer, a musician whose work is characterized by rhythmic energy and colorful harmony – all inspired by his native Baku. Born into a city, enjoying a cultural renaissance and growing up in a family of keen amateur musicians, his love of his home town continued to serve at his muse. In his later years, based in Moscow and unable to travel easily due to illness, he wrote: “To me, Baku is the most beautiful city in the world. Every morning when the city wakes up, whether it be to the sun or the rain and fog, every morning my city sings. Baku is meant for art. It gives me so much pleasure to write about this city, no matter if you write music, verse or paint images”.

The Azgoskino studio was encouraged to tackle “Eastern problems” – particularly involving the role of women – to help create the new egalitarian utopia proposed by the commissars. “Sevil” (1929) tells Jabbarly’s story of a down-trodden housewife booted out by her ungrateful husband and finding a path to freedom and happiness.

Ali & Nino Moscow, 2008

In October 2008 the Buta Arts Centre together with Ad Marginem publishing house presented Russian public the real bestseller - novel “Ali and Nino” considered to be the most wonderful example of the beauty and power of art that can unite people all over the world. For the first time the novel was published in 1937 in German in Vienna. Its Manuscript disappeared, and scientists are still scratching their heads over the question of who is hidden under the mysterious pseudonym “Kurban Said”. Today there are many versions of the authorship of the novel. “Ali and Nino” is a West-Eastern novel, where East and West collide, intersect even in a poetic way of looking at the world and history. Fighting with each other, East and West are both connected and merge into one. Point of their connection - love of Azerbaijani Ali, heir to the ancient Shiite family, and the Georgian princess Nino, a character in the novel is an artistic and accurate confirmation of the reputation of Georgians to be “Europeans of the Caucasus”. “Outstanding novel. Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica September, 2010

In September 2010 the Buta Arts Centre supported the Grammy Award–winning violinist Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica in the release of their new album “De Profundis”. The album’s 12 pieces, selected from Kremer’s performing repertoire, all hold very special meaning to him and are connected to each other on a deep, intuitive level. Gidon Kremer dedicates the album to all those who refuse to be silenced, “namely to Mikhail Khodorkovsky who being a real patriot of Russia can be seen as a symbol for democratic changes in his home country. Khodorkovsky continues to spend years of imprisonment in Siberia, where he has been sent by a questionable trial”.
