DESIGN AUDIT 1. What is it? 2. What would you call it? 3. Describe it in your own words. 4. Why is it your favorite—how does it express you? 5. How is design prevalent in your life? Alice

1. It’s a croquis board. 2. It is called, “The Aftermath” 3. It is a set of designs based on life after nuclear war. It has shapes and influences from broken architecture and warped metal 4. This is my favorite because it was one of the first boards I did in school, and it was the first design that helped me find my own unique style. 5 Design is prevalent in my life, in the way that I can’t just look at anything any more without thinking about its design and the influences the designer was trying to show.

Shana

1. A photo I took of Bethany Beach. 2. Home Away from Home 3. This picture shows one of my favorite places and I like how the waves are clearly seen as in motion with the sun on it. 4. It is one my favorite photos because I love the beach and I love the times going there that it reminds me of. My family has been going there since I was a baby. 5. I like the way the lighting hits the waves. It adds interesting shadowing effects showing the movement of the waves. With design, I can capture the moments I like the best. It helps it to be a more organized composition, and people can appreciate it more.

1. Crimpy hair style, black lace camisole, and 3 tiered pearl necklace 2. Vintage meets Mod 3. It incorporates trends and styles from different eras. The pearls and lace are more vintage, but the more modern style of the shirt, and the wavy hair gives it a more modern look with a bit of edge to it. I feel like I can describe myself as edgy at times- it expresses me because it's my favorite look! 4. I start with a pretty basic and casual black cami, then add the classic pearls to give it a vintage style and dress it up a bit. The hair and make up give it a more current edge. 5. Design is what makes me unique. I have my own style which is my own design, and I wear it every day. I like to express myself through the clothing and accessories I choose for the day, or moment, or whenever! My look is my design!

1. Will Ferrell 2. The Man 3. It’s beautiful 4. He’s probably my favorite actor, or one of my favorite... and I can act retarded like him sometimes. 5. I use all the time. I’m an art major, so it’s important

Paige

1. The technical name would we photography-a moments memory caught in time 2. I call it “Lasting” 3. A beautiful fall moment; a mix of love and life! The bright red is captured behind the white pillars creating a restrained look. Yet the color of the red prevails! Hint Lasting... 4. It’s my favorite because it’s bold. People tend to be restrained sometimes and don’t let their true self shine through. It expresses me because while I am bold and lively. I restrain myself so I don’t seem crazy all the time! I am the red behind the white. 5. Design is prevalent in my life because I see it in everything. I’ve always want to preserve those little moments, and I do so through photography. Incorporating design, I can do it skillfully making a better shot and a more clear, frozen memory!

Zhan

1. Charcoal drawing of my alter ego 2. Drinking Attraction 3. Just used charcoal on drawing paper. 4. I like drinking, and partying a lot! 5. It was part of my major before I switched from art to history. Art is still my outlet though- I use it to express myself. Through my individual designs I create my own “label”- people know it’s mine. This one in particular makes me look like a bad ass... and I can draw!

Architecture is a part of design that we see everyday but may not pay attention to. So i studied different types of buildings from apartment to sky scrapers to libraries, and took major components from them and spelled out “Design” from the rooftops of the buildings.

Jona Wigfall up from above p4–5

My spread involves the architecture in New York City. There are pictures of various places such as Times Square, Central Park, and the East Village. Some of the photos are black and white, most are in color. I want to arrange the pictures in a way to capture and hold the viewer’s eye.

I wanted to show the viewers that within all structures you can find interesting ways to make letters. Architecture is able to be interpreted in many different ways that what is presented before us. I wanted this spread to empower imagination and to look closer to the world around us.

Kayla Yingst Life Size Letters p8–9

This spread is of Ronald McDonald and The BK King sneering at each other with the heading “BURGER BRAWL” and The Face Off in navy between them. The background is an explosion courtesy of Fourth of July and my camera.

My spread is a logo puzzle. I used the first letter of popular logos to ask “Guess the logos” Each letter of the phrase is the first letter of a popular logo. I used images from www.brandsoftheworld.com

Kenny Rackers Guess the Logos p14–15

My idea is to get together my own photos of different types of graffiti art all around, wherever I may see them. Then I will decide on the photos I like the most and arrange them in an aesthetically pleasing way.

Photoshopped to the MAX .

Jon Glatzer New York, New York p16–17

For my spread I divided up the word “design,” into two different words, “destroy” and “signs.” For my “destroy” page, I created cartoon explosions with catch phrases. For my “signs” page, I simply drew street signs.

David Alger Signs of Explosions p24–25

Melody Lopez BURGER BRAWL p20–21

My spread is basically the name of the class in graffiti letters. The name and section are in one type of graffiti and the class’ formal name is in another type. I chose to do this because I enjoy graffiti and I wanted it to have something to do with the class.

Moirè Grimes The Graffiti of U.V.I.E. p26–27

Toni Lopes Tag, You’re It p22–23

My spread is a compilation of different snowboard designs based on an imagined company called “Mandu Boards.” The work is meant to be loose and bold in its use of color contrast. Each board has a top and bottom which relate. The logo for the company can also be found on the top right of some of the boards.

Dan Kelly Mandu Boarding Co. p28–29

My spread takes a look at how design changes based on the target audience. The spread consists of the same basic content and information on each side, but the way the information is displayed changes to target different groups of people. On the left, there is a clean, organized layout which is meant to target a large demographic of people from business owners to the elderly. On the right, the layout is much more gritty, dirty, and bold to target a younger audience like teens and students.

Spencer DeMetrick Targeting an Audience p30–31

For my spread for our magazine i created a game with famous chairs and chairs that were made by other normal company’s. I picked these chairs by the artists we learned about this semester and then i chose random chairs that caught my eye and maybe fool the reader. The goal for the game is to match up the correct price with the correct chair.

Pat Pritchard The High Cost of Modern Living p38–39

So far for my spread, I compiled a list of friends who I know incorporate design into their lives every day whether it is because it plays a huge role in their major, or if they simply use it to create a stylish look for the day. I had each of them think of their favorite design whether it was an outfit, hair style, photo, or drawing, photograph themselves with it, and answer five questions.

Lauren Koch Design is individuality, expressed p46–47

For my spread, I chose fashion design as my inspiration. I collaged a poster of different clothes, shoes, and hand bags all “pouring out” of a suitcase. It represents the overwhelming quality of the fashion world.

Heather Dempsey Fashion Explosion p52–53

I took the five bridges that I liked most and decided to draw them. I only did a side profile of the bridges because of the amount of detail that would be necessary otherwise. I used a white pencil on blue paper to give it the feel of a blueprint to add to the shock value. And I incorporated the city and length as well as height of all the bridges.

Ocianna Bascom Crop Circles p32–33

*So I was “Just Kick’n it” and I was thinking about DESIGN. When I thought about design I thought about fashion; fashion in my eyes can be seen in the sneaks that define me. From Jordans to Nikes, to New Balance to Adidas; I’ll rock em. So “Just for Kicks” I’m asking, “DO YOU HAVE A FEETish??”

Gia Berrios DO YOU HAVE A FEETish? p42–43

Ben Tanis Wanna Get Away? p48–49

For my spread I took pictures of all different patterns and made 60 of them into small rectangles. I arranged these icons into columns on each page of the spread. The final spread is an interesting array of patterns. I choose this to shed light on how many patterns one encounters constantly.

Sylvie Golec Patterns p54–55

For my spread I decided to focus on textures, materials and industrial design. I took photographs of East St. in downtown Frederick. The photographs are in color and most of them are close up or focus on one item. The spread will be made up of two parts and the format with be part singular and part grid.

Meredith Paoletti Sunday on Church Street p36–37

i decided to create an agenda-type spread. instead of filling the agenda with a schedule, i filled it with photos that i saw during that hour. i used a digital (nikon d80) and film (nikon fm10) camera and both black and white images.

Valentina Massa lets design your day p44–45

The exercise was placing our first sentence from letter cases onto a giving sheet of paper. The idea was to be more artistic and involve with our works in being able to explore design hands on. The process was not hard, but sometimes could get a little tricky. In some cases it can be time consuming, but the overall process can be rewarding due that the techniques has been pass on through the ages.

Josh Thompson why are choose tech (why architect) p50–51
