WE’VE MOVED! We’re excited to announce that Art & Creativity for Healing has moved to a new location in Laguna Hills. We’ve spent the last 13½ years on Getty Drive in Laguna Niguel, about 8 miles from our new location.

The new studio is actually a large commercial space in the Laguna Hills Business Park. The photo to the left shows the outside facade. We’re excited about the hustle and bustle happening and all of the great restaurants and businesses within an easy walking distance of the new location. We want to give a special thank you to commercial interior designer and artist, Donna Johansen, for creating and donating a spectacular floor plan.

New Office and Studio Location! Please update your address book.

STUDIO WORKShOPS

T

he Art4Healing® Program is comprised of 2-3 hour workshops during which children and adults are invited to express their feelings with color. They process their journey with pain, grief, fear or stress through painting, while learning about color, composition and other art elements. The guided exercises are effective in encouraging and nurturing all participants to experience an emotional release through their work with paint on canvas. Through a series of colorful warm-up exercises, participants r each deep within their souls to access their creative talents a nd become producing artists for a day. Each Participant creates a series of abstract paintings that bring to the surface his or her own story. Each painting reflects its creator’s unique personal journey. These extraordinary workshops are available monthly at the Art & Creativity for Healing studio for all who are interested in experiencing these unique methods. Space is limited so reservations are required. Art & Creativity for Healing also conducts group workshops developed for your workplace, on-site or at our studio. Many organizations have found our workshops especially helpful for staff team-building and stress reduction.

FACILITATOR’S CORNER Stories from our Art4Healing® Certificate Program Graduates

The first time I spoke with Laurie I knew I had found something special. I had been looking for a way to combine my art background, my passion for people in recovery, and a desire to serve a particular group of young men in a residential treatment center in Arkansas. Up until that moment I had no knowledge of therapeutic art… and no real appreciation for abstract painting either. I had studied graphic design in college, worked briefly as a graphic artist until I had my three sons, and been working as a professional artist with oil paintings at Mission Fine Art Gallery. Then, through my son’s struggle with drugs and alcohol about 4 years ago, I was introduced to a whole world of amazing, courageous people who were fighting for their lives in recovery. I became absorbed with learning all I could about addiction in its many forms and the paths to recovery. The Art4Healing® Certificate Program was exactly what I needed. I was looking for a way for my work to serve a greater purpose, and to use what I have personally experienced as an artist and teacher about the transformational power of art. With this program I did not have to be a therapist, I could be myself, an artist with a heart for people who are willing to do what ever it takes to get well. In the intensive training, we were taught that it was not about us, it was about facilitating a healing process. I believed that if my heart was right, this would be my ministry, not a job. With ACFH I felt like I was generously given all the information, training, support and opportunities to volunteer and learn that I needed. As I kept my focus on learning about the group I felt led to serve, and did the next right thing, opportunities have continued to appear. I founded HEart HEALS and held

my first workshop in October 2011. Mariners Church gave me their blessing as a Care & Recovery ministry and I began running monthly workshops on their campus. I was witnessing first hand how creativity, spirituality and loving people intersected to support recovery! I have provided annual workshops in Watts for an after-school mentoring program and for a men’s sober living home in Huntington Beach, California. In April, I was hired to run weekly therapeutic art groups for a women’s outpatient treatment center. I am doing what I set out to do. As an artist, I’ve always been drawn to painting stories of people I see around me. Now I’m honored to be able to help people abstractly paint their own stories. They paint stories of grief and loss, struggle and ambivalence, but also stories of how relationship, love, and hope fit into the beautiful picture of their lives. And yet, every time I am a witness to someone’s story, I am the one who is blessed.
